The Rhetoric Of Law And Love: Legally (Re)Defining Marriage, Volrick Wallace Higgs Jan 2015

The Rhetoric Of Law And Love: Legally (Re)Defining Marriage, Volrick Wallace Higgs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In just over one year since United States v. Windsor— the case invalidating sections of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that defined marriage, for purposes of federal statutes, as the “union of man and woman”— more than a dozen states have had their same-sex marriage bans ruled unconstitutional. This suggests a shift in legal meaning; previously successful arguments against same-sex “marriage” now seem irrational as argumentative ground has shifted. Since favorable rulings redefine “marriage” to include same-sex unions, this thesis analyzes Kitchen v. Herbert, a 2014 legal opinion from the United States Court of Appeals Tenth Circuit, to understand …

The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard Jan 2015

The Theological Roots And Historical Context Of J. S. Bach’S St. Matthew Passion, Bwv 244, Tennison Hubbard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

History shows that Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout member of the Lutheran faith. Studying Bach’s life reveals that two sects of Lutheranism were the most influential to him, Orthodoxy and Pietism. A brief historical study of these two sects’ founders and their theology are presented in this document. All of Bach’s compositions are a reflection of his Christian beliefs but none is greater than his St. Matthew Passion. Although Bach is known to be a member of the Orthodox denomination, by observing the parallels between the beliefs of the two sects and the St. Matthew Passion, this document …

The Sonata Of Band Management, William Schmidt Jan 2015

Most of the published writings on this subject are either too broad, or too business-minded for the typical musician. This thesis provides a creative …

Transnational Islamism And Political Moderation: A Comparative Analysis Of Egypt And Morocco, Yasmin Salem Jan 2015

Transnational Islamism And Political Moderation: A Comparative Analysis Of Egypt And Morocco, Yasmin Salem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation examines how transnationalism can affect Islamists’ moderation in both Egypt and Morocco. In this dissertation, I do an in-depth comparative case study analysis to assess the prospects of moderation of two Islamists political entities, the Muslim Brotherhood as a transnational social movement and the Morocco Party of Justice and Development (JDP), which has no transnational ties. Both the Muslim Brotherhood and PJD came to power after the Arab uprising in 2011 and were key players in the democratic transitions in both countries; however, the entities are not related. Further, the dissertation will explore the moderation level of the …

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle Jan 2015

The Significance For, And Impact Upon, Public Administration Of The Correspondence Theory Of Truth Or Veridicality, Derek Ray Slagle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The dissertation is about the significance for, and impact upon public administration of the correspondence theory of truth or veridicality, and its underlying epistemological assumptions. The underlying thesis is that, unduly influenced by the success of the natural sciences, and naive in accepting their claims to objectivity, many disciplines have sought to emulate them. There are two principle objections. Firstly, all other considerations aside, the supposedly objectivistic methodologies apparently applied to the explanation and prediction of the behavior of interactions of physical objects, may simply be inappropriate to certain other areas of inquiry; and more specifically objectivist methodologies are indeed …

Multicultural Education And High School English Teachers: A Teacher Awareness Study, Rebecca Hamilton Jan 2015

Mechanisms Controlling Distribution Of Cosmopolitan Submerged Aquatic Vegetation: A Model Study Of Ruppia Maritima L. (Widgeongrass) At The Everglades-Florida Bay Ecotone, Theresa Strazisar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Aquatic plants and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) are some of the most wide-ranging species and create important habitat for fish and wildlife in many ecosystems, including highly variable coastal ecotones. Mechanistically understanding factors controlling current distributions of these species is critical to project future distribution and abundance under increasing variability and climate change. I used a population-based approach to quantify the effects of spatial and temporal variability on life history transitions of the SAV Ruppia maritima L. (widgeongrass) in the highly dynamic Everglades-Florida Bay ecotone as a model to (1) examine which life history stages were most constrained by these …

Optical 2d Positional Estimation For A Biomimetic Station-Keeping Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Christopher Nunes Jan 2015

Optical 2d Positional Estimation For A Biomimetic Station-Keeping Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Christopher Nunes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Underwater vehicles often use acoustics or dead reckoning for global positioning, which is impractical for low cost, high proximity applications. An optical based positional feedback system for a wave tank operated biomimetic station-keeping vehicle was made using an extended Kalman filter and a model of a nearby light source. After physical light model verification, the filter estimated surge, sway, and heading with 6 irradiance sensors and a low cost inertial measurement unit (~$15). Physical testing with video feedback suggests an average error of ~2cm in surge and sway, and ~3deg in yaw, over a 1200 cm2 operational area. This is …

Modernizing Copyright For Equitable Treatment In The Streaming Age, Brandon T. Barrett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Society’s progression through the digital streaming age has created a music licensing landscape of grave concern to all stakeholders in the industry. These drastic changes have occurred under an outdated legal framework. This paper will recommend a comprehensive reform to our copyright law to uphold the intentions of copyright in the modern, digital age of today. By looking at the history of copyright and its evolution, one can assess how Congress has been tasked with establishing a fair market value for music by promoting the public interest and fairly compensating copyright owners. This will lead to an evaluation and comparison …

Multisensory Cues Facilitate Infants’ Ability To Discriminate Other-Race Faces, Nicholas J. Minar Jan 2015

Multisensory Cues Facilitate Infants’ Ability To Discriminate Other-Race Faces, Nicholas J. Minar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Our everyday world consists of people and objects that are usually specified by dynamic and concurrent auditory and visual attributes, which is known to increase perceptual salience and, therefore, facilitate learning and discrimination in infancy. Interestingly, early experience with faces and vocalizations has two seemingly opposite effects during the first year of life, 1) it enables infants to gradually acquire perceptual expertise for the faces and vocalizations of their own race and, 2) it narrows their ability to discriminate the faces of other-race faces (Kelly et al., 2007). It is not known whether multisensory redundancy might help older infants overcome …

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen Jan 2015

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intracavitary high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy generally in which a post-surgical tissue margin is treated. The dose gradient of HDR brachytherapy is very steep, and thus small displacements of the applicator, even as small as 1 mm, could potentially cause significant variations of dose which could result in undesired side effects such as overdose of a critical organ. In this retrospective dosimetric study, the variation of dose due to various small range motions of gynecological applicators is investigated. The results show that the implementation of additional immobilization and localization devices along with other safety …

The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert Jan 2015

The Effects Of Dichoptic And Isoluminant-Chromatic Stimuli On The Perception Of Object And Objectless Motion, Matthew S. Seifert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Visual motion can be conveyed by a variety of information sources in the environment, and those types of information may be detected at various levels by different motion-perceiving mechanisms in the visual system. High-level visual information has been demonstrated to have 3rd order, or salience-based properties (Lu & Sperling, 1995). The perceptual system they describe that computes motion from these types of information shares several characteristics with Hock and colleagues' counterchange detection system, notably flexibility with respect to types of input from which motion can be computed, which comes at the cost of diminished processing speed. The mechanism of counterchange …

The Effects Of Toll-Like Receptor (Tlr) Agonists On Human Nicdc-Nk Mediated Memory/Effector T-Cell Development, Saba Tamjidi Jan 2015

The Effects Of Toll-Like Receptor (Tlr) Agonists On Human Nicdc-Nk Mediated Memory/Effector T-Cell Development, Saba Tamjidi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is compelling evidence that smokers are less responsive to vaccination. We reported that both therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines fail to protect and cure animals from disease due to negative effects of nicotine on DCs’ ability to generate effector T cells. We have been investigating whether vaccine formulated with TLR agonist(s) could potentially overcome the immunosuppressive effects of nicotine on human DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. Monocyte-derived DCs and nicDCs were stimulated with individual and combined TLR agonists prior to co-culture with purified T cells. The phenotypes and cytokine profiles of T cell were assessed using Flow …

Experimental Evaluation Of Cement Stucco Surfacing Material (Cssm) Removal For Reducing Particulates In Air, David Cowan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Every year millions of construction workers are exposed to dust in levels that create a hazard to them (Fundukian, 2011). Their environment is contaminated by activities such as cutting, chipping, grinding and sanding building materials. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) refers to this general collection of building materials debris and fine particulates as nuisance dust. Some of the particles in nuisance dust possess properties that make them especially hazardous, such as their shape or specific gravity. It has been found by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that inhalation of quantities of silica dust above the permissible exposure …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Monte Carlo (MC) and Pencil Beam (PB) calculations are compared to their measured planar dose distributions using a 2-D diode array for lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). The planar dose distributions were studied for two different phantom types: an in-house heterogeneous phantom and a homogeneous phantom. The motivation is to mimic the human anatomy during a lung SBRT treatment and incorporate heterogeneities into the pre-treatment Quality Assurance process, where measured and calculated planar dose distributions are compared before the radiation treatment. Individual and combined field dosimetry has been performed for both fixed gantry angle (anterior to posterior) and planned …

Substantive Due Process For Noncitizens: Lessons From Obergefell, Anthony O'Rourke Jan 2015

Substantive Due Process For Noncitizens: Lessons From Obergefell, Anthony O'Rourke

Journal Articles

The state of Texas denies birth certificates to children born in the United States — and thus citizens under the Fourteenth Amendment — if their parents are undocumented immigrants with identification provided by their home countries’ consulates. What does this have to do with same-sex marriage? In a previous article, I demonstrated that the Court’s due process analysis in United States v. Windsor is particularly relevant to the state’s regulation of undocumented immigrants. This short essay builds upon my earlier analysis by examining Obergefell v. Hodge’s applications outside the context of same-sex marriage. Obergefell’s due process holding, I …

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm Jan 2015

A Feminist Cultural Study Of Identity, Hair Loss, And Chemotherapy, Celine Guillerm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The main aim of this dissertation is to discuss the way women negotiate the cultural meaning of hair loss, alopecia, as a result of undergoing chemotherapy, and to understand, accordingly, how cancer's cultural effects regarding women can be deeply different from those of men. Very few studies have been done about the cultural impact and resonance of alopecia. It is often regarded as "secondary" to other effects of chemotherapy. Because, in many cultures, head hair for women expresses or manifests attractiveness and power, to be bald is to be deprived of the ability to fit into society, whether in the …

A Lime Softening System For Individual-Household Use Powered By Solar Energy, Alexandria Slater-Williams Jan 2015

A Lime Softening System For Individual-Household Use Powered By Solar Energy, Alexandria Slater-Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A study conducted by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund, concluded that approximately 768 million people worldwide are not receiving sanitary drinking water suitable for consumption. While there are many water treatment methods, lime softening proves to be one of the more effective approaches as it removes a wide variety of harmful compounds including arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium under the correct conditions. The greatest issues with lime softening on a smaller scale include the complexity of the chemistry and need for monitoring. By designing the system for groundwater sources and with a smaller capacity, this thesis …

Cahydrodynamic Analysis Of Flapping Foils For The Propulsion Of Near Surface Under Water Vehicles Using The Panel Method, Julia Bustos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis presents two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis of flapping foils for the propulsion of underwater vehicles using a source-vortex panel. Using a simulation program developed in MatLab, the hydrodynamic forces (such as the lift and the drag) as well as the propulsion thrust and efficiency are computed with this method. The assumptions made in the analysis are that the flow around a hydrofoil is two-dimensional, incompressible and inviscid. The analysis is first considered for the case of a deeply submerged hydrofoil followed by the case where it is located in shallow water depth or near the free surface. In the second …

Combined Spatial Diversity And Time Equalization For Broadband Multiple Channel Underwater Acoustic Communications, Kaskarovska Violeta Skoro Jan 2015

Combined Spatial Diversity And Time Equalization For Broadband Multiple Channel Underwater Acoustic Communications, Kaskarovska Violeta Skoro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

High data rate acoustic communications become feasible with the use of communication systems that operate at high frequency. The high frequency acoustic transmission in shallow water endures severe distortion as a result of the extensive intersymbol interference and Doppler shift, caused by the time variable multipath nature of the channel. In this research a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) acoustic communication system is developed to improve the reliability of the high data rate communications at short range in the shallow water acoustic channel. The proposed SIMO communication system operates at very high frequency and combines spatial diversity and decision feedback …

Cell-Surface Glycan-Lectin Interactions For Biomedical Applications, Benavente Maria Carolina Rodriguez Jan 2015

Cell-Surface Glycan-Lectin Interactions For Biomedical Applications, Benavente Maria Carolina Rodriguez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Carbohydrate recognition is one of the most sophisticated recognition processes in biological systems, mediating many important aspects of cell-cell recognition, such as inflammation, cell differentiation, and metastasis. Consequently, lectin-glycan interactions have been intensively studied in order to mimic their actions for potential bioanalytical and biomedical applications. Galectins, a class of ß-galactoside-specific animal lectins, have been strongly implicated in inflammation and cancer. Galectin-3 is involved in carbohydrate-mediated metastatic cell heterotypic and homotypic adhesion via interaction with Thomsen-Friedenreich (TF) antigen on cancer-associated MUC1. However, the precise mechanism by which galectin-3 recognizes TF antigen is poorly understood. Our thermodynamic studies have shown that …
