La Comida Y Sus Historias: Food-Centered Life Histories Of Two Mexican Women Living In The U.S., Esther Díaz Martín, José García

Diálogo

An examination of the interaction of foodways with personal history, collective memory, and identity formation, through the food-centered life histories of two Mexican women, first generation immigrants living in the U.S. Discusses espacios de convivencia, social relations orchestrated on women’s terms, the centrality of corn in the household’s diet (and changes due to the implementation of new technologies), and the significance of festive meals in relation to personal identity, to draw conclusions on women’s agency in preserving collective memory and knowledge through foodways. Includes Chicana feminist theories on women’s spaces and ways of knowing.

Branding Guilt: American Apparel Inc. And Latina Labor In Los Angeles, Hannah Noel Jan 2015

Branding Guilt: American Apparel Inc. And Latina Labor In Los Angeles, Hannah Noel

Diálogo

A study of the marketing strategies of the clothing enterprise, American Apparel, how it targets affluent, educated youth through socially conscious tactics, including a focus on pro-immigrant rights and Los Angeles-made, “sweatshop-free” advertising. The essay analyzes the ideologies and stances behind marketing materials that often contain images of Latinas/os as laborers, and white (European origin) population as consumers, and examines how U.S.-based ethical capitalism operates as a neoliberal form of social regulation to champion personal responsibility and individual freedom, in often hidden and inferentially racist and classist ways.

Cultural Citizenship And Coming Out On A College Campus: Undocumented Students’ Responses To Everyday Immigration Enforcement, Julia Wignall

Diálogo

A study of the experiences of young undocumented immigrants as they transition into adulthood in Southern California, their obstacles encountered in the imposed condition of “undocumented,” even within the university experience, and innovative strategies adopted to deal with legal impediments. Using an ethnographic approach and interviews with college students, techniques such as “coming out of the shadows” and “everyday enforcement” are evaluated, as well as theories on practices of cultural citizenship, to demonstrate that undocumented students are claiming space and rights in their daily lives.

Voluntary Action In New Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 2015

Voluntary Action In New Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A major new social, economic, political and cultural space (actually, a sector of many spaces) we can call the new commons has gradually emerged outside of markets, governments and households. It currently goes by many names and reaches far beyond the recognized and incorporated nonprofit sector to include many additional forms of voluntary assembly and organized action. This space is legally defined and is the domain of fundraising, volunteering, advocacy, mutual aid, self-help and various forms of collective behavior. It includes associations, groups and clubs but also constitutionally protected assembly - not only public gatherings but also parades, festivals, cosmopolitan …

Evangelism And Diakonia In Context, Rose Dowsett, Isabel Phiri, Dawit Olika Terfassa, Hwa Yung, Knud Jorgensen Jan 2015

Evangelism And Diakonia In Context, Rose Dowsett, Isabel Phiri, Dawit Olika Terfassa, Hwa Yung, Knud Jorgensen

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Evangelism and diakonia belong together in the perspective of the Great Commission. Evangelism is sharing one’s faith and conviction with other people and inviting them to discipleship. Diakonia is the gospel and our faith in action and is expressed through loving our neighbor. Evangelism and diakonia are like the two blades on a pair of scissors. They give the church identity and they are functions of the church. This is not just a matter of doing evangelism and diakonia in balance and alongside each other. Rather, evangelism and proclamation have social and diaconal consequences as we call people to discipleship …

Avoiding Unnecessary Divorce And Restoring Justice In Marital Separations - Review Of Family Law Act 1975 (Fla), Christopher Brohier, Nigel K. Zimmermann Jan 2015

Avoiding Unnecessary Divorce And Restoring Justice In Marital Separations - Review Of Family Law Act 1975 (Fla), Christopher Brohier, Nigel K. Zimmermann

Law Papers and Journal Articles

The concept of no-fault divorce which became law in Australia in 1975 was part of a revolution in divorce law reform which swept through the western world in the late 1960s and 1970s. It was predicated on a notion that the law should aim to buttress marriage, but if the marriage was finished in fact, the law should “enable the empty legal shell to be destroyed with the maximum fairness, and minimum bitterness, distress and humiliation.” Property would be divided on a “once for all” basis, the children, though not physically divided, would be apportioned between a “custodial” parent and …

Critical Thinking Activities And The Enhancement Of Ethical Awareness: An Application Of A ‘Rhetoric Of Disruption’ To The Undergraduate General Education Classroom, Jeffrey W. Murray Jan 2015

Critical Thinking Activities And The Enhancement Of Ethical Awareness: An Application Of A ‘Rhetoric Of Disruption’ To The Undergraduate General Education Classroom, Jeffrey W. Murray

Focused Inquiry Publications

This article explores how critical thinking activities and assignments can function to enhance students’ ethical awareness and sense of civic responsibility. Employing Levinas’s Othercentered theory of ethics, Burke’s notion of ‘the paradox of substance’, and Murray’s concept of ‘a rhetoric of disruption’, this article explores the nature of critical thinking activities designed to have students question their (often taken-for-granted) moral assumptions and interrogate their (often unexamined) moral identities. This article argues that such critical thinking activities can trigger a metacognitive destabilization of subjectivity, understood as a dialectical prerequisite (along with exposure to otherness) for increased ethical awareness. This theoretical model …

Examining moral and ethical issues related to the application of anthropology, we assess current endeavors and make suggestions for future directions from a political ecology perspective. Introducing five articles that exemplify our approach, we identify common themes and particular contexts that both unify and distinguish each of the contributions. Throughout this introduction, we propose a potential guidepost for a political-ecology informed applied anthropology: any applied …
