I love to travel because it is always a wonderful, life-changing experience — whether embarking on a road trip or flying overseas to a foreign country. No matter where you go, you will likely meet new people and learn something new, which is always my goal.

Despite a large and multifaceted effort to understand the vast landscape of phenotypic data, their current form inhibits productive data analysis. The lack of a community-wide, consensus-based, human- and machine-interpretable language for describing phenotypes and their genomic and environmental contexts is perhaps the most pressing scientific bottleneck to integration across many key fields in biology, including genomics, systems biology, development, medicine, evolution, ecology, and systematics. Here we survey the current phenomics landscape, including data resources and handling, and the progress that has been made to accurately capture relevant data descriptions for phenotypes. We present an example of the kind of …
Integrating Information Technology Into Curricula Activities: Participant Observation Of Laptop Use, Lorraine Fisher, Martin Butler, Peter Keenan, Geraldine O' Neill
Integrating Information Technology Into Curricula Activities: Participant Observation Of Laptop Use, Lorraine Fisher, Martin Butler, Peter Keenan, Geraldine O' Neill
Communications of the IIMA
This paper presents descriptive use of laptops as a lecturer and students engage in curricula activities over one hour of instruction. Lave and Wenger's (1991) theory of situated learning (SL) is used to contextualise laptop use in teaching and learning, inside the undergraduate business classroom. We examine how laptops are used to support teaching and learning practice and influence the curricula process, as laptops are introduced into instruction. Interpretive ethnography and participant observation capture lecturer and student descriptive narrative as they use laptops. Analysis is presented in time order and documents lecturer / student laptop use inside the undergraduate classroom.

Encouragement Through Community: An Ethnographic Study Of Team B, Lexi Nicole Reeves
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
As the desire to achieve a healthier lifestyle is on the rise, many fitness organizations strategize to lure customers in through specific communicative tactics. Team B (name has been modified for confidentiality purposes) has become a leader in the fitness realm over the past two decades. This thesis explores the culture of Team B through an ethnographic study to reveal how the company functions differently from other similar organizations. The research conducted relies on a variety of methods including naturalistic inquiry, participant observation, surveying and interviewing. Additionally, the cultural approach to organizations as presented by Geertz and Pacanowsky (2012) helps …

To Pair Or Not To Pair: Sources Of Social Variability With White-Faced Saki Monkeys (Pithecia Pithecia) As A Case Study, Cynthia Thompson

Intraspecific variability in social systems is gaining increased recognition in primatology. Many primate species display variability in pair-living social organizations through incorporating extra adults into the group. While numerous models exist to explain primate pair-living, our tools to assess how and why variation in this trait occurs are currently limited. Here I outline an approach which: (i) utilizes conceptual models to identify the selective forces driving pair-living; (ii) outlines novel possible causes for variability in social organization; and (iii) conducts a holistic species-level analysis of social behavior to determine the factors contributing to variation in pair-living. A case study on …

Grotesque Bodies: Transsexuals’ Struggle For Truth In Iran, Marie Lecuyer
Grotesque Bodies: Transsexuals’ Struggle For Truth In Iran, Marie Lecuyer
sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies
Many western commentators have been shocked by the legislation addressing transsexual’s’ right to transitioning and sex reassignment surgery in a strictly-gendered regulated county like Iran. As if all of a sudden Iran rose among countries of the Middle East as a paradise for transsexuals. Other recurrent narratives depicted the Iranian members of the LGBT community as victims of a purely theocratic and authoritarian regime, forcing non-gender normative individuals to change sex to fit in society. Rather, the space given to transsexuals now allowed to function more freely and be at peace with themselves reshapes the LGBT community’s relation to the …

Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry
Getting The Message: The Adaptive Potential Of Interpersonal Judgments, John D. Mayer, Kimberly G. Phillips, Amy Barry
Psychology
According to the Social Message Model, interpersonal judgments are transactions in which judges convey important social messages to the individuals they evaluate (the targets); targets can then respond to the judgments in more or less adaptive ways. We argue that judges’ opinions emerge from their current concerns, be it to promote their own well-being, or to foster group cohesion. Targets of judgments can best interpret the meaning of a judgment they receive by understanding the judge’s concerns, competence of the judge, and other qualities of the transaction. We suggest that judges and targets who are better able to reason about …
On The Limits Of Liberalism In Participatory Environmental Governance: Conflict And Conservation In Ukraine's Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson
On The Limits Of Liberalism In Participatory Environmental Governance: Conflict And Conservation In Ukraine's Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson
Anthropology Faculty Publications
Participatory management techniques are widely promoted in environmental and protected area governance as a means of preventing and mitigating conflict. The World Bank project that created Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve included such ‘community participation’ components. The Reserve, however, has been involved in conflicts and scandals in which rumour, denunciation and prayer have played a prominent part. The cases described in this article demonstrate that the way conflict is escalated and mitigated differs according to foundational assumptions about what ‘the political’ is and what counts as ‘politics’. The contrasting forms of politics at work in the Danube Delta help to explain …
International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts
International Migration Of Health Professionals And The Marketization And Privatization Of Health Education In India: From Push-Pull To Global Political Economy, Margaret Walton-Roberts
International Migration Research Centre
Health worker migration theories have tended to focus on labour market conditions as principal push or pull factors. The role of education systems in producing internationally oriented health workers has been less explored. In place of the traditional conceptual approaches to understanding health worker, especially nurse, migration, I advocate global political economy (GPE) as a perspective that can highlight how educational investment and global migration tendencies are increasing interlinked. The Indian case illustrates the globally oriented nature of health care training, and informs a broader understanding of both the process of health worker migration, and how it reflects wider marketization …

This article focuses on Enrico Brizzi’s L’inattesa piega degli eventi [The Unexpected Turn of Events, 2008], La nostra guerra [Our War, 2009], and Lorenzo Pellegrini e le donne [Lorenzo Pellegrini and the Women, 2012], a trilogy of alternative history novels that imagines what would have happened to the Italian empire if Italy had not allied with Germany during the Second World War. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s reflections on contemporaneity (2009), I analyze how this trilogy represents Fascism and its colonial legacy in relation to the history of politics and soccer in Italy. I also compare Brizzi’s trilogy to Mario Farneti’s …

Save Our Schools Rally Chicago, March 17, 2013, Todd Alan Price
Faculty Publications
Using a video camera, I documented the historic Save our Schools Rally Chicago, March 27, 2013. Included was a march led by President Karen Lewis of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), interviews respectively of Reverend Jesse Jackson, a special education teacher-Diana, and a healthcare worker, and footage of community members performing civil disobedience. Perhaps most compelling are the voices of students—high school seniors— who spoke eloquently against school closings.
