“In The World”: The Journal Of International Women’S Studies At 25, Andrew Holman

Bridgewater Review

Academic journals are at the heart of our system of communicating scholarly ideas and research results, and have been since at least the 1640s, but at no time has the genre undergone such challenge and change as in the past 25 years. In that span, the perennial quest among editors to stay relevant has been joined by successive waves of novel transition: a shift from print to online publishing, the push for an open-access model of consumption, the growth of alternative, non-journal communication networks (from listservs to weblogs, podcasts, and more), and now, the uncertainty of generative AI. To face …

Why Is Ticino Part Of Switzerland?, Noah Businger Nov 2025

Why Is Ticino Part Of Switzerland?, Noah Businger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Nowadays, the Canton of Ticino is considered as Swiss as anywhere else in Switzerland. However, it wasn’t always like that: putsches, revolutions, and independence movements once posed serious challenges to the status of the south-lying canton as part of Switzerland. So, how is it that Switzerland’s borders ended up south of the Alps? The answer lies not only in political upheaval and a desire to preserve local autonomy, but also in the symbolic integration of the canton into the national narrative. Over time, figures like William Tell and events like the uprising of 15 February 1798 became powerful tools of …

Faculty Research 2025

This paper develops a vision for The Ecological Genome Project: an aspirational, global endeavour to connect human genomic sciences with the ethos of ecological sciences. The Project's goal is to strengthen interdisciplinary networks that relate to diverse initiatives using genomic technologies, with respect to shared ethical frameworks and governance structures. To this end, this paper proposes a practical definition of ecogenomics to align various methodologies and values in a single environmental field using principles used to safeguard all forms of life in their habitats. We achieve this by using a One Health approach as a pretext for disparate disciplines to …

Critical Approaches To Jurisdiction: The Struggle For Control Of Indigenous Lands And Resources, Dayna Scott Nov 2025

Critical Approaches To Jurisdiction: The Struggle For Control Of Indigenous Lands And Resources, Dayna Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter questions the starting assumptions in thinking through questions of “jurisdiction” in public law, specifically in relation to assertions of inherent Indigenous territorial governing authority. It reviews the common conceptual images of jurisdiction we employ in law schools and offers resources from critical interdisciplinary theory for new conceptions. In highlighting examples of the present exercise of Indigenous territorial jurisdiction, such as the Kunst'aa guu— Kunst'aayah Reconciliation Protocol and the Tsleil-Waututh Sacred Trust Assessment of the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) project, the chapter urges public law scholars to adopt an orientation of prefiguration in order to bring into being conceptualizations …

During the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, migrations and the advent of working bronze alloy materials triggered profound cultural, social, and economic shifts across Central Europe. As a result of this processes, many communities with distinct archaeological and cultural characteristics emerged during the Central European Early Bronze Age (between circa 2200/2100 and 1600/1500 BC) in Central Europe, and with the Middle Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin (between 2000/1900 and 1500/1450 BC). This study examines the biological relationships among these populations through biodistance analyses, aiming to clarify connections between cultural and biological affinities within the emerging heterogeneous communities. Craniometric …

College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers

Understanding the role of humans as 'ecosystem engineers' requires a deep-time perspective rooted in evolutionary history and the fossil record. However, no conceptual framework exists for studying the rise of ecosystem engineering in deep time, requiring us to consider effects that fall outside the scope of traditional definitions. Here, we present a new framework applicable to both modern and ancient engineering-type effects. We propose a new term - 'Earth system engineering' - to describe biological processes that alter the structure and function of planetary spheres, and which combines core tenets of ecosystem engineering, niche construction, and legacy effects. We illustrate …

We Are Here Because Of Them: Co-Creating A Native Cemetery Memorial At Mission Santa Clara, Lee M. Panich, Amy J. Lueck, Lauren Baines, Isabella ‘Amne Gomez

Faculty Publications

Tens of thousands of Native individuals perished in California’s twenty-one Franciscan missions that operated from the 1760s into the 1840s, but most public interpretive programs gloss over their lives and the cemeteries where they are interred. This has historically been the case at Mission Santa Clara, on the campus of Santa Clara University. In this article, we reflect on the process of co-creating an interactive memorial designed to honor the Native people buried in two colonial-era cemeteries related to the mission and link their lives to the descendant community today. Importantly, the co-creation process helped strengthen relationships in numerous directions, …

Theory Of Mind Across Cultures: Psychological Implications, Lewis Hancock, Simon Dein Nov 2025

Theory Of Mind Across Cultures: Psychological Implications, Lewis Hancock, Simon Dein

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Theory of Mind (ToM) refers to a set of social and cognitive abilities that we use to infer and understand other people’s mental states. This paper begins by outlining ToM, its component skills, and what research methods have been used to measure it. It then summarises research on how culture and other social factors such as language, parenting, and socio-economic status can impact its development, in particular differences in age of mastery of various aspects of ToM. Mental disorders characterised by deficits in ToM – in particular ASD – are also discussed and used to elucidate its nature and development. …

Poster Abstract: Field Evaluation Of Body Thermoregulation-Based Dynamic Bedroom Air Temperature Control To Improve Sleep, Wenhao Zhang, Stefano Schiavon, Clayton Miller

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Sleep is essential for human health and well-being. Previous lab-based studies have shown that dynamically adjusting bedroom temperature according to body thermoregulation can improve sleep quality and thermal satisfaction. However, such strategies have not been tested in real-world settings, and there is a lack of practical solutions developed for residential buildings. In this work, we test a body thermoregulation-based dynamic air conditioning (AC) control strategy designed for typical Singapore homes and evaluated it in a pilot field deployment. The preliminary findings suggest that the proposed strategy can be successfully implemented in real bedroom settings and may improve sleep outcomes.

Spanish Heritage Speakers And Latinidad: How Spanish Fluency Influences Self-Perceived Latinidad Among Heritage Speakers, David Alejandro Rivera Sandoval, Gladys Valle Nov 2025

Spanish Heritage Speakers And Latinidad: How Spanish Fluency Influences Self-Perceived Latinidad Among Heritage Speakers, David Alejandro Rivera Sandoval, Gladys Valle

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Abstract of Research: This study examines 1) how heritage speakers' self-perceived proficiency and fluency in Spanish influence their identity as Latinos, and 2) the generational similarities and differences in their lived experiences. Through surveys and interviews, the relationship between Spanish proficiency and fluency and perceived Latinidad among nine Spanish heritage speakers (with Latin American ancestry) has been assessed. The research suggests that no statistically significant relationship was found between language proficiency or fluency and perceived Latinismo. However, qualitative findings revealed that participants construct their Latino identity based on cultural values, lived experiences, and a sense of belonging rather than language …

Generative Ai And Empirical Software Engineering: A Paradigm Shift, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey Nov 2025

Generative Ai And Empirical Software Engineering: A Paradigm Shift, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The widespread adoption of generative AI in software engineering marks a paradigm shift, offering new opportunities to design and utilize software engineering tools while influencing both developers and the artifacts they create. Traditional empirical methods in software engineering, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method approaches, are well established. However, this paradigm shift introduces novel data types and redefines many concepts in the software engineering process. The roles of developers, users, agents, and researchers increasingly overlap, blurring the distinctions between these social and technical actors within the field. This paper examines how integrating AI into software engineering challenges traditional research paradigms. It …

Using Video Ethnography And Stimulated Recall Interviews To Describe The Diagnostic Process In The Emergency Department, Milisa Manojlovich, Caitlin Cassady, Sarah J Parker, Ellie Davis, Charlotte Ahr, David Ryamukuru, Anna Wang, Kalyan Pasupathy, Hardeep Singh, Prashant Mahajan Nov 2025

Using Video Ethnography And Stimulated Recall Interviews To Describe The Diagnostic Process In The Emergency Department, Milisa Manojlovich, Caitlin Cassady, Sarah J Parker, Ellie Davis, Charlotte Ahr, David Ryamukuru, Anna Wang, Kalyan Pasupathy, Hardeep Singh, Prashant Mahajan

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objectives: Understanding how physicians make diagnoses is challenging because cognitive processes are unobservable and partly unconscious, making it difficult for physicians to describe how they arrived at a diagnosis. Physicians who work in emergency departments (EDs) are especially vulnerable to making diagnostic errors because the ED is a fast-paced, dynamic setting where complex decision-making occurs under severe time, information, and resource constraints. The purpose of our study was to describe how the diagnostic process evolves for ED clinicians in both pediatric and adult ED settings.

Methods: We used a qualitative, video ethnography study design to capture in situ, real-time ED …

Unaccompanied Migrant Minors: A Psychiatric Case Series Review, Cecilia De Vargas, Eden Hernandez Robles, Fernando Doval Perez, Leslie Salazar-Hinojosa, Danielle Parker, Javier Segovia, Aleli Campbell, Deborah J. Clegg

International Journal on Responsibility

Unaccompanied children and adolescents who migrate from Central America and Mexico into the United States (U.S.) are exposed to and experience trauma throughout the process of migration. These traumatic experiences result in an increasing prevalence of psychiatric illnesses and challenges to treatment. This study presents a psychiatric patient record review of minors and their complex trauma. Unaccompanied migrant minors (UMM) ages 12-17 (28 males and 22 females; n = 50) received comprehensive psychiatric assessments at the El Paso Texas Tech Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic. Their charts were reviewed for psychiatric diagnosis, treatment progress, and trauma experiences before, during, …

The El Mozote Massacre Of 1981: Central American Human Rights And United States Cold War Policy, Abbey Botko Oct 2025

The El Mozote Massacre Of 1981: Central American Human Rights And United States Cold War Policy, Abbey Botko

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

This research explores the motivations behind the denial of the 1981 El Mozote Massacre in El Salvador. In this event, the US-backed Atlácatl battalion of the Salvadoran Army brutally killed over 500 Indigenous peoples in the department of Morazán. Despite multiple eyewitness accounts of the massacre, both the United States and Salvadoran governments repeatedly denied responsibility for the event.

This project is based on official US governmental documents from the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, Department of State, and Congress. These documents illuminate conversations within the government concerning knowledge about the massacre, plans for continuing foreign aid, and further …
