The Changing World In Microcosm: The Dying Languages Of Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Guinea, George Tucker Childs
The Changing World In Microcosm: The Dying Languages Of Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Guinea, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Observers have become increasingly aware of how the world is changing due to the forces of globalization, be it in the form of neo-colonialism, the scramble for natural resources, or the various extractive industries. The recent alarm over Ebola illustrated another pernicious fallout of increased communication and travel. The effect of globalization has also been great on indigenous peoples and their cultures, in particular on what many consider to be an integral component of culture, the local languages.
I report on recent research devoted to the documentation of endangered languages in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia (the Ebola countries). Most …
Locus And Praxis In The Denver Teacher Residency, Bryan Wehrli
Locus And Praxis In The Denver Teacher Residency, Bryan Wehrli
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the concepts of praxis and locus as they pertain to teacher education practices and novice learning in the Denver Teacher Residency Program. The term locus was meant to suggest a nuanced and comprehensive way to consider the K-12 school and classroom as the essential location for learning to teach. The term praxis referred to adaptive expertise, or practical reasoning, problem solving, and wisdom informed by theory in practice. An analytical case study investigated two research questions: 1) In what ways is teacher learning deliberately located in the clinical setting of a …

Collaboration For Success In Young Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury, Barbara Cechanowicz
Nursing ETDs
Aim. The aim of this study was to explore self-efficacy and success in young adult survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and provide the opportunity for participants to communicate their perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and concerns. Background. Many of those affected by TBI are young adults who are establishing their social and work lives. Young adults face challenges and choices that are pivotal in establishing a course for their lifetime. Self-efficacy theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. The TBI Self-Efficacy Questionnaire and General Self-Efficacy Scale were used to measure self-efficacy, and the Glasgow Outcomes Scale-Extended was used to measure …

Speak No Evil: Do Zambian Religious Leaders Practice A “Conspiracy Of Silence” Regarding Hiv/Aids?, Corliss Lentz, Sarmistha Majumdar
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
“A Conspiracy of Silence” vilifies religious institutions for their perceived silence during the HIV/AIDS pandemic (Ngoma-Simengwa 2010). There have been few studies to determine whether clergy are silent about HIV/AIDS. This article reviews the 2011 Zambian Religious Leader’s Survey, which surveyed 336 clergy from two denominations in Zambia: Christians and Muslims. Twelve questions were used to identify the frequency of preaching on HIV/AIDS related topics. A factor analysis was used to select factors that were commonly addressed by Christian and Muslim clergy in their preaching, and each factor had several variables as topics of preaching. The t-test was used to …

Constructing And Resisting Disability In Mathematics Classrooms: A Case Study Exploring The Impact Of Different Pedagogies, Rachel Lambert
Constructing And Resisting Disability In Mathematics Classrooms: A Case Study Exploring The Impact Of Different Pedagogies, Rachel Lambert
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study demonstrates the importance of a critical lens on disability in mathematics educational research. This ethnographic and interview study investigated how ability and disability were constructed over 1 year in a middle school mathematics classroom. Children participated in two kinds of mathematical pedagogy that positioned children differently: procedural and discussion-based. These practices shifted over time, as the teacher increasingly focused on memorization of procedures to prepare for state testing. Two Latino/a children with learning disabilities, Ana and Luis, used multiple cultural practices as resources, mixing and remixing their engagement in and identifications with mathematics. Ana, though mastering the procedural …

The Poetic Origins Of Media Studies: Some Quantitative Preliminary Understandings, Murvai Peter, Scheffel-Dunand Dominique
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
If the modernist model has dominated the field of literary theory at least since the second half of the 19th Century, does this mean that it also provided a conceptual and discursive framework which was to be adopted and adapted by the field of Media Studies in the 20th Century? The present study gives a tentative answer to this question by shedding light on some of the correlations between concepts found in the modernist aesthetics and in a number of canonical texts in the fields of Media and Communication. More precisely, we propose to conduct a quantitative investigation. Its purpose …

In The Cesspool Of Corruption: The Challenges Of National Development And The Dilemma Of Anti-Graft Agencies In Nigeria, Oluwaseum Bamidele, Azeez O. Olaniyan, Bonnie Ayodele
African Social Science Review
Most theoretical and analytical discourse on national development identified the virulent nature of corruption as development curse. In Nigeria, as in many other soft states, the epidemic nature of corruption and its destructive impacts on the national development has received wider attention in both national and international mass media. Similarly, scholarly literature on the culture of sleaze in many of these countries revealed the depth of the disease. Nigeria, undoubtedly remain at the front page of countries under the siege of sleaze. Its profile as one of the most corrupt nations feeds largely into the crisis of its national development. …

Questioning The Validity Of Race As A Social Construct: Examining Race And Ethnicity In The ‘Rainbow Nation’, Bob Heere, Matthew Walker, Heather Gibson, Brijesh Thapa, Sue Geldenhuys, Willie Coetzee
African Social Science Review
Governments have historically classified their populations according to race and ethnicity, which has been done to either exert power over minority groups or ensure equality among these groups. However, viewing ones racial identity through a historical lens raises doubts about the validity of race as a social construct, since the concept has seldom served as a strong foundation for social identity formation. As such, we posit that ethnicity is a more accurate predictor of identification than race. Using South Africa as the research context, we examine whether within each race group ethnic differences exist on national identity and social capital …

A Pluridisciplinary Treatise Of The Fractal Complexity In John Mukum Mbaku’S Corruption In Africa: Causes, Consequences And Cleanups, Abdul Karim Bangura
African Social Science Review
While my extensive search yielded about 20,500 mentions, seven scholarly citations, and three scholarly book reviews of John Mukum Mbaku’s Corruption in Africa: Causes, Consequences and Cleanups (2007), no systematic analysis has been done on the text, even though such potential exists. This is a serious gap in the literature on Africa’s international affairs and development studies because the book is one of the major works, if not the most comprehensive work, on a topic that has significant implications for the continent’s international relations and development. This paper is an attempt to fill this gap. Specifically, I employ the mathematical …

From Nyaya Panchayats To Gram Nyayalayas: The Indian State And Rural Justice, Shishir Bail
From Nyaya Panchayats To Gram Nyayalayas: The Indian State And Rural Justice, Shishir Bail
Socio-Legal Review
Legal reform attempts in India have frequently grappled with the problem of providing access to justice to rural litigants. In the early years of the Indian republic, the now infamous Nyaya Panchayats were tasked with this responsibility. These institutions were motivated by a desire to recreate an ‘indigenous’, panchayat based model of dispute resolution, but had more or less died out by the late 1970s. In 2008, the Parliament of India made a renewed attempt to address this problem through the passage of the Gram Nyayalaya Act, intended to result in the setting up of over 5,000 Gram Nyayalayas across …

The Coca Plant And Bolivian Identity, Matthew G. Russo
The Coca Plant And Bolivian Identity, Matthew G. Russo
International ResearchScape Journal
ABSTRACT
The political battle rages between the U.S. government, the U.N. and the Bolivian President, Evo Morales, about his efforts to protect, legalize and preserve the symbol of the Andean indigenous identity: the coca plant. The human rights of indigenous populations are being violated by culturally insensitive governments in compliance with U.S. and U.N. law. The questions posed are: Is coca cocaine? What are the economic benefits of the production of coca and who benefits? What is the relationship between coca and Bolivian identity? What would be the impact in the global community if coca is eradicated permanently?

Pathway To Autism Spectrum Disorders: Finding Patterns Of Common Genetic Variation Underlying The Complex Disorder, Yo Son Park
Open Access Dissertations
The field of genetics has witnessed a tremendous increase in the amount of information in the past decade resulting from genotyping and resequencing technologies. There has been an explosion in the development, application and optimization of statistical and computational methods to analyze these data. In particular, genome-wide scanning of common or rare genetic variants and their associations to a phenotypic trait has been successfully applied in several studies. For complex diseases such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), however, interrogating single locus associations by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has been unable to unambiguously identify disorder causing genes. In this dissertation, an …

Assessing A Christian's Response To The Annihilating Self-Communication Of The Suicide Bomber, C. A. Chase
Assessing A Christian's Response To The Annihilating Self-Communication Of The Suicide Bomber, C. A. Chase
Forum Lectures
A person enters a public space-market, café, church-unnoticed, identity camouflaged against the vernacular of the everyday. In a flash-self-communicating through willful self-annihilation-the anthropology of a hitherto unknown individual is irrevocably imbedded in the history(s) of other human anthropologies without any consent. In the violence of such a moment, against the compelling mystery of the self-erased suicide bomber, a starting point opens up for the Christian witness to the event to enter into, and to begin a radical exploration of mystery, identity, of the other, of the self, framed against the Christian tradition, and reflected against the Christ.
