The Disciplinarity Of Mathematical Practice, Eric Livingston Jan 2015

The Disciplinarity Of Mathematical Practice, Eric Livingston

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Despite an extensive literature on the nature and origins of mathematical truth, few if any studies exist of the everyday practices through which the adequacy of mathematical argumentation is cultivated and assessed. The work of a novice prover afforded insight into these practices and, in particular, into the disciplined character of discovering and proving mathematical theorems.

'Sisters; Was This What We Struggled For?': The Gendered Rivalry In Power And Politics, Mohamed Haji Ingiriis

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article explores the role of Somali women in the twentieth-century history of modern Somalia. This includes exploring the role of women in the decolonisation and post-colonial movements and gender changes during the military dictatorship. The article examines women’s social movements that made some significant changes in Somalia over the past seventy years, even though these have not paved the way for fruitful results. In demonstrating that the current attempts to position themselves in political circles by Somali women has its roots during the decolonisation and post-colonial successive Somali governments, the article argues that women failed to benefit from their …

Attitudes And Perceptions Of Young Men Towards Gender Equality And Violence In Timor-Leste, Ann Wigglesworth, Sara Niner, Dharmalingam Arunachalam, Abel Boavida Dos Santos, Mateus Tilman

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines attitudes and perceptions of young men toward gender relations and gender-based violence in post-conflict Timor-Leste. A high level of domestic violence is reported and a law against domestic violence has been passed in recent years. In 2013, a research team surveyed almost 500 young men using the Gender-Equitable Men (GEM) Scale in both rural and urban contexts. It was found that young men become less gender equitable as they get older, and the environment they grow up in influences their gender attitudes. Existing contradictions and tensions between national government policy and local customary practices are well-known, and …

Vulnerability Of Elderly Women To Witchcraft Accusations Among The Fipa Of Sumbawanga, 1961-2010, Hamisi Mathias Machangu Jan 2015

Vulnerability Of Elderly Women To Witchcraft Accusations Among The Fipa Of Sumbawanga, 1961-2010, Hamisi Mathias Machangu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Witchcraft accusations have led to the killings of elderly women in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. For many years, the violence has had major effects on people’s health. Witchcraft accusations have been the source of people’s loss of limbs and deaths among elderly women in Africa. Although these problems have had effects on elderly women, there has been very little reconstruction of their history in Tanzania. Thus, the aim of this article is to rewrite the history of the vulnerability of the elderly women to witchcraft accusations among the Fipa of Sumbawanga district of Tanzania.

This article focuses on the …

Veiling And Blogging: Social Media As Sites Of Identity Negotiation And Expression Among Saudi Women, Hala Guta, Magdalena Karolak

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper aims at assessing how Saudi Arab young women use social media for negotiating and expressing their identity. Through in-depth interviews with a sample of seven Saudi females aged 20-26, the research revealed that the internet, with its protection of individual privacy, provided the participants a space to negotiate the boundaries imposed on them by cultural and societal rules. Participants employed several tactics of negotiation such as using nicknames, concealing their personal images and using first names only in order not to be identified by their family names. Using multiple accounts is also popular among participants. Without gatekeepers, the …

The Meaning Of Hijab: Voices Of Muslim Women In Egypt And Yemen, Kenneth E. Jackson, Elizabeth Monk-Turner Jan 2015

The Meaning Of Hijab: Voices Of Muslim Women In Egypt And Yemen, Kenneth E. Jackson, Elizabeth Monk-Turner

Journal of International Women's Studies

This work explores how Muslim women in Egypt and Yemen understand the hijab, or head scarf. Based on data (N = 100) from a self-administered questionnaire written in Arabic, differences about the meaning of hijab are examined from the perspective of women who wear or are expected to wear the head scarf. When asked what the hijab means, Egyptian women focus on religious reasons and Yemeni women emphasize a cultural (or modesty) understanding. When probed further about their understanding of hijab, Egyptian women split between religious and gendered explanations. Significant numbers of women in our Egyptian sample report …

Installations Of Jewish Law In Public Urban Space: An American Eruv Controversy, Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert Jan 2015

Installations Of Jewish Law In Public Urban Space: An American Eruv Controversy, Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article analyzes the ongoing controversy over the installation of an eruv in Westhampton Beach. The author first provides an analytical description of the case with reference to other recent eruv controversies. Similar to arguments advanced in earlier eruv controversies, lawyers in the Westhampton case have taken recourse to the First Amendment, with proponents of the eruv relying on the free exercise clause, and opponents relying on the establishment clause. The article then proceeds to discuss the implications of this controversy for the larger issues of religion in the public sphere, as one of the critical issues emerging in all …

Virtuous Friends: Morality And Quaker Identity, Jackie Leach Scully Jan 2015

Virtuous Friends: Morality And Quaker Identity, Jackie Leach Scully

Quaker Studies

Recent work in moral philosophy and psychology has made deep connections between questions of morality and identity, suggesting that orientation to a moral framework, through community practices and discourses, contributes to the individual sense of self. I argue that contemporary Liberal Quakers in Britain thus use their moral judgments among other things to reinforce their social identity as Quakers, emphasising a shared approach to ethical framework and sources of authority over the substantive content of the judgments. The favoured ethical framework of Liberal British Quakers appears to be a form of virtue ethics, and I explore the possibility that links …

Understanding The Gender And Ethnicity Attainment Gap In Uk Higher Education, Dre Cotton, M Joyner, R George, Pa Cotton Jan 2015

Understanding The Gender And Ethnicity Attainment Gap In Uk Higher Education, Dre Cotton, M Joyner, R George, Pa Cotton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

In recent years the success rates of different groups of students in higher education (HE), have come under considerable scrutiny, with gender and ethnicity identified as key attributes predicting differential achievement of ‘good degrees’. A review of previous studies highlights the need for research which looks beyond ‘the deficit model’ to explain the attainment gap. This research used a mixed-methods approach to explore the academic and social experiences of students, as well as lecturers’ views on student achievement, in one UK University. Findings suggest that there are significant differences in motivation and confidence speaking English for different ethnic groups in …

Exploring A Trainee's Response To Visiting Refugees In Jordan: A Bifocal Art Exploration, Daniela Marie Montañez Jan 2015

Exploring A Trainee's Response To Visiting Refugees In Jordan: A Bifocal Art Exploration, Daniela Marie Montañez

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This arts-based research investigated the personal responses of a trainee art therapist working with displaced refugees in Jordan. This inquiry is based on the belief that it is important for a new trainee to cultivate a broader appreciation of cross-cultural issues for both personal and professional applications. The art-based data, analyzed through Betensky's (1995) phenomenological approach, inspired a profound exploration of the refugee experience while simultaneously exploring the role and identity of the trainee. The author presented seven prominent themes that emerged from the refugee and trainee experiences: displacement, survival, connection, loss of control, safety, competence, and countertransference. Between both …
