Wizards At Making A Virtue Of Necessity': Street Vendors In India, Abhayraj Naik Jan 2015

Wizards At Making A Virtue Of Necessity': Street Vendors In India, Abhayraj Naik

Socio-Legal Review

Street vending is ambivalent in India’s imagination of law, space, and self. This essay attempts to excavate street vending in India as an interstice: an enquiry directed towards how street vending is entangled with specific theoretical and ideological positions concerning culture, citizenship, commodification, consumption, globalization, legality, modernity, neoliberalism, poverty, politics, public space, and social movements. The focus of my excavation of interstitial street vending in India is twofold. First, a methodological front-staging of the interconnections between law, space and time in India. Second, an acknowledgment of the importance of revisionist accounts of Indian modernity; accounts that note emergent politics of …

Insights Gained From A Cultural Contexts Counseling Course In A Rural Setting, Susan Dodd

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Abstract

The intention of this study was to explore the ways in which graduates of a master’s level counseling program reflect their knowledge and experiences gained during a required course entitled, “Cultural Contexts in Counseling.” Seven graduates of the counseling program participated in the study. The study took place at a state university located in a rural, racially homogenous region of the northeast. Using a qualitative design, the researcher, who was also the course instructor, solicited feedback from her former students who had taken the course at least one year prior to the time of the study. Participants responded via …

An Increasing Usefulness For Managerial Communication Research On The Main Topics Of Management, Reginald L. Bell, Deborah Roebuck

Effective communication is necessary across all management tiers and functions. In addition, it is an integral part of managerial decision-making. Over the last 10 years, interest in the nuances of communication as related to management has intensified. These studies have fostered diverse approaches to linking management and communication. Our investigation, using 2x5 and 2x4 factorial ANOVAs, reveals that differences exist among the means of five professional communication fields. Numerous articles published between 2004 and 2013 were examined, and we found an increasing usefulness for managerial communication research on the main topic of management.

A Cross-Cultural Study On Consumers' Sentiments Of The Marketing Mix Variables And Consumers' Perceptions Toward Marketing Ethics, Ghensy Antoine Jan 2015

A Cross-Cultural Study On Consumers' Sentiments Of The Marketing Mix Variables And Consumers' Perceptions Toward Marketing Ethics, Ghensy Antoine

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Marketing ethics continues to be viewed as tampered by unethical practices. This cross-cultural quantitative research surveys 186 consumers in the New Orleans Metropolitan area to gain insights into their perceptions of marketing ethics. The predictive ability of consumers' demographic variables, cultural dimensions, and sentiments toward marketing mix elements vis-a-vis their perceptions of marketing ethics are explored, as well as significant differences within these dominant constructs.

The study integrates a conceptual framework blended with Hofstede's cultural dimensions, McCarthy's marketing mix, and the Hunt-Vitell's general theory of marketing ethics. Psychometric characteristics of the instruments were confirmed through exploratory factor analyses. Results show …

"Shes American Now, I Dont Like That": Gendered Language Ideologies In A Laotian American Community, Daryl Gordon

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

As gender identities have shifted within the Laotian American community, perceptions of English proficiency have emerged as a site in which complex ideologies about gender identity are explored and contested. While Laotian women experience expanded opportunities for enacting their gender identities through wage labor and access to education, Laotian men experience a narrowing of opportunities, having lost traditional sources of power such as land ownership and high status professions. Laotian mens enactment of a discourse of nostalgia and the development of language ideologies, specifically the belief that they are more proficient English speakers than women, play an important part in …

Lost In Institution: Learning To Write In Midwestern Urban Mainstream Classrooms, Yanan Fan

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

How do recent immigrant students learn to write in mainstream content area classrooms? This article considers this question in the under-investigated American Midwest contexts where schooling is being reframed by rapid changing demographics. Data for this paper come from an ethnographic case study of second language learning of a Vietnamese 9th grader in an urban school setting. Grounded in a sociocultural view of learning, the author examines (1) how the student negotiated the nature and purpose of writing among inconsistent expectations, objectives and responsibilities in mainstream, and (2) how she was lost in a lack of vision in literacy and …

Role Of Family, Culture, And Peers In The Success Of First-Generation Cambodian American College Students, Jennifer Tang, Simon Kim, Don Haviland Jan 2015

Role Of Family, Culture, And Peers In The Success Of First-Generation Cambodian American College Students, Jennifer Tang, Simon Kim, Don Haviland

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Cambodian American college students are often overlooked in academe because of the model minority myth. The stereotype overshadows the challenges and heterogeneity in the Asian American and Pacific Islander population. This exploratory study examined the experiences of 13 first-generation Cambodian American college students at a large, public institution in California. Findings revealed that, despite obstacles of being first-generation with limited cultural capital, students were transformed into successful leaners when they received validation from their parents and peers and felt a sense of belonging to the college community through their involvement in an ethnic-based student organization.

Learning English And "Smartness": Refugee Students Negotiate Language, Reception, And Ability In School, Liv Thorstensson

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This article analyzes how Southeast Asian refugee high school students negotiated “smartness” and language learning at a low-performing, urban high school in the U.S. southeast. Findings are drawn from a year-long qualitative study that examined the identities of refugee students from Vietnam’s Central Highlands. The conceptual framework is built on sociocultural theories of identity and language learning (Bourdieu, 1991; Holland, Skinner, Lachicotte & Cain, 1998) and illuminates the contextual and relational nature of students’ identity articulation in school. Findings underscore the ways in which racialized discourses perpetuated by teachers and peers simultaneously positioned them as model minorities and undermined their …

Trauma And Second Language Learning Among Laotian Refugees, Daryl Gordon Jan 2015

Trauma And Second Language Learning Among Laotian Refugees, Daryl Gordon

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Unprecedented numbers of adult refugee learners are entering ESL classes, many of whom escaped war-torn countries and endured long stays in refugee camps. Research in public health and psychology has documented high levels of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder in refugee populations. Drawing on ethnographic research with Laotian refugee women who experienced pre-settlement trauma during the Vietnam War and interviews with bilingual mental health professionals, this article examines current second language acquisition theories to consider how they elucidate the effect of trauma on second language learning. The article offers cross-cultural perspectives about the impact of trauma and recommendations for …
