Becoming And Being: Atheism As A Social Experience In Egypt, Wael Ossama Al-Soukkary Feb 2015

Becoming And Being: Atheism As A Social Experience In Egypt, Wael Ossama Al-Soukkary

Theses and Dissertations

This project involves discovering how some Egyptian atheists develop and manage their identity. The goal of the research is to demonstrate the different variables that influence the transformation to atheism. This research also seeks to explore the different ways Egyptian atheists deal with the stigma associated with their identity once they self-identity as atheists. Upon examination and analysis of my interlocutors' account it became clear that atheism is not only organic to the Egyptian culture but also a significantly fluid identity.

Civilizing Settlers: Catholic Missionaries And The Colonial State In French Algeria, 1830-1914, Kyle Francis Feb 2015

Civilizing Settlers: Catholic Missionaries And The Colonial State In French Algeria, 1830-1914, Kyle Francis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation argues that between 1830 and 1914, with increasing intensity over time, French Catholic missionaries sowed divisions among the European population of French Algeria. The French government initially welcomed missionaries to cater to religiously devout Spanish, Italian, and Maltese settlers in Algeria and to foster their loyalty to the colonial state. Missionaries, however, incited the professional jealousy and personal animosity of the territory's generally less devout French population, who saw Catholicism and missionaries as little different from Islam and the "fanatical" Muslim population. Throughout this period, missionaries thus occupied a liminal space in the racialized hierarchy of colonial rule. …

Performing Blackness In A Mulatto Society: Negotiating Racial Identity Through Music In The Dominican Republic, Angelina Maria Tallaj-García Feb 2015

Performing Blackness In A Mulatto Society: Negotiating Racial Identity Through Music In The Dominican Republic, Angelina Maria Tallaj-García

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation analyzes Dominican racial and ethnic identity through an examination of music and music cultures. Previous studies of Dominican identity have focused primarily on the racialized invention of the Dominican nation as white, or non-black, often centering on the building of Dominican identity in (sometimes violent) opposition to the Haitian nation and to Haitian racial identity. I argue that although Dominicans have not developed an explicit verbal discourse of black affirmation, blackness (albeit a contextually contingent articulation) is embedded in popular conceptions of dominicanidad ("Dominicanness") and is enacted through music. My dissertation explores ways in which popular notions of …

Building Legal Competency: Foundations For A More Effective Criminology And Criminal Justice Discipline, Claire Nolasco, Rolando V. Del Carmen, Kevin F. Steinmetz, Michael S. Vaughn, Aneta Spaic

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)

This article argues for the need to build legal competency in the discipline of criminal justice and criminology through incorporating law courses in its PhD program curriculum, whether as black letter law (i.e. criminal law, criminal procedure, courts), sociology of law, or socio-legal studies (i.e. law and society courses). Through requiring law courses as a necessary and integral part of the curriculum, and recognizing the mainstream impact of these courses, the discipline stands to enrich the field of legal studies in criminology and criminal justice. The discipline’s need and demand for law trained tenure track faculty with PhD credentials can …

El Transnacionalismo Y La Identidad Judia En La Obra De Isaac Goldemberg, Jose Goni Feb 2015

El Transnacionalismo Y La Identidad Judia En La Obra De Isaac Goldemberg, Jose Goni

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The objective of this research is to study the work of Isaac Goldemberg, a Peruvian writer of Jewish roots who settled for several years in the United States. His work shows a combination of elements that reflect both his Jewish origin and his country of birth. I believe that studies of Jewish Latin American writers are scarce. They have been approached from a sociological, anthropological, religious and historical perspective, but not from a literary one. Therefore, I intend to make a literary analysis of Goldemberg's work first, and secondly, an interpretation of his Jewish identity and his transnationalism as shown …

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (The Irish Musicians' Association) And The Politics Of Musical Community In Irish Traditional Music, Lauren Weintraub Stoebel Feb 2015

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (The Irish Musicians' Association) And The Politics Of Musical Community In Irish Traditional Music, Lauren Weintraub Stoebel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (The Irish Musicians' Association) and its role in the politics of Irish traditional music communities. A revivalist organization founded in 1951, Comhaltas today is an educational and activist organization whose mission includes the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music. Its numerous programs--from local music classes to a national festival drawing thousands of participants--intersect at some point with the musical lives of nearly every Irish traditional musician. Because of this widespread activity, Comhaltas interacts, often contentiously, with many of the different musical communities through which Irish traditional musicians define themselves both publically and privately. …

Obesity Interventions In Egypt: Identifying Gaps And Highlighting Assets, Hana Shahin Feb 2015

Obesity Interventions In Egypt: Identifying Gaps And Highlighting Assets, Hana Shahin

Theses and Dissertations

Worldwide, obesity is a growing epidemic and a leading non-communicative disease. Egypt has high levels of obesity, causing harm to both individuals and society at large. Data on obesity in Egypt includes measures of obesity rates, comorbidity, and consequences, but there is little documentation on obesity interventions. This is in large part due to the fact that obesity is overlooked by the Egyptian government and culture. This study aimed to collect data on available programs and interventions in Egypt, to explore assets and challenges to obesity programming, and to ask for recommendations for combatting obesity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with …

Impact Of Ethnic Conflict On Development: A Case Study Of Guyana, Visnoonand Bisram Feb 2015

Impact Of Ethnic Conflict On Development: A Case Study Of Guyana, Visnoonand Bisram

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The study presents an alternative framework, from the dominant political and economic theories, for explaining the feeble and relatively slow pace of development of an ethnically divided, resource rich country.

The study, using primary and secondary sources, empirical evidence, and interpretive analysis, examines the emergence and role of racial conflict and its stifling impact on national development in Guyana, which represents an extreme case of a society plagued by racial division. Organizations including labor unions and political parties, as well as occupations and aspects of the economy, among other social constructs, are all racially divided. Utilizing an inter-disciplinary (sociology, political …

Institutionalizing Colonial Identity: A Case Study On The Indian Partition, Jamie Bodine Feb 2015

Institutionalizing Colonial Identity: A Case Study On The Indian Partition, Jamie Bodine

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 1947, the British colony of India was declared independent and emerged as two separate states, Pakistan and India. To examine this event, I ask what material cause(s) made possible the institutional separation between these two new states. To approach this question, I will review the process of political identity formation from the upheaval of 1857 to the 1947 partition. In so doing, I argue that the system of categorizing those who were under British colonial rule manufactured a particular set of political identities on the Indian subcontinent.

Consuming Poverty: The Unexpected Politics Of Food Aid In An Era Of Austerity, Maggie Dickinson Feb 2015

Consuming Poverty: The Unexpected Politics Of Food Aid In An Era Of Austerity, Maggie Dickinson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation tracks the remarkable growth of food assistance in the U.S. over the past fifteen years and asks what this expansion of food aid means for poor people living in New York City. Much of the scholarly literature on welfare policy in the U.S argues that social programs have become more stingy and punitive, particularly since the passage of welfare reform in 1996. On the surface, this does not seem to be the case for the food stamp program or for emergency food providers like soup kitchens and food pantries. Since 2001 food stamp rolls have risen 120% in …

The Trickster In Nella Larsen's Passing (1929): Performing And Masquerading An American Identity, Rachael Miller Benavidez Feb 2015

The Trickster In Nella Larsen's Passing (1929): Performing And Masquerading An American Identity, Rachael Miller Benavidez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines Nella Larsen's novel Passing (1929) and the performative nature of `passing' as white through the perspective of the archetypal trickster myth. I read the novel as a trickster tale that challenges gender roles and the construct of race in defiance of the dominant power structure that defines the American identity. I position the character Clare Kendry Bellew as a trickster figure, who performs an identity to defy race and gender roles. My argument challenges the general theory that black passing novels are solely tragic, and the perception that humor is not a pedagogical tool or representation of …

Development Of Functional Interactions Among Cortical And Trabecular Traits During Growth Of The Lumbar Vertebral Body, Melissa Ramcharan Feb 2015

Development Of Functional Interactions Among Cortical And Trabecular Traits During Growth Of The Lumbar Vertebral Body, Melissa Ramcharan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Variation in bone traits that contribute to increased fracture risk in the elderly is mainly established in adulthood. Previous studies have shown that in adults, cortical and trabecular traits are functionally related. How variations in traits develop to establish mechanical function in adult bone is not well understood. In this study, we examined temporal changes in the development of cortical and trabecular traits during growth in mouse lumbar vertebral body structures that have a wide range of genetic variants. We determined a sequence of events among traits that would suggest how functional bone structures developed. Examining bones in A/J, C57/BL6 …

The Literary Legacy Of The Federal Writers' Project, Sara Rendene Rutkowski Feb 2015

The Literary Legacy Of The Federal Writers' Project, Sara Rendene Rutkowski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Established by President Roosevelt in 1935 as part of the New Deal, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) put thousands of unemployed professionals to work documenting American life during the Depression. Federal writers--many of whom would become famous, including Ralph Ellison, Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, and Dorothy West--collected reams of oral histories and folklore, and produced hundreds of guides to cities and states across the country. Yet, despite both the Project's extraordinary volume of writing and its unprecedented support for writers, few critics have examined it from a literary perspective. Instead, the FWP has …

Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan Feb 2015

Changing Identities In A Changing Land: The Romanization Of The British Landscape, Thomas Ryan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis will examine the changes in the landscape of Britain resulting from the Roman invasion in 43 CE and their effect on the identities of the native Britons. Romanization, as the process is commonly called, and evidence of these altered identities as seen in material culture have been well studied. However, the manifestations of this process in the landscape have been less well examined. Applying current theories in landscape archaeology, the Selsey peninsula oppidum of the Atrebates and two hillforts of the Durotriges, sites that have been well excavated and examined, will be the focus of this thesis. The …

Right To Land And The Rule Of Law: Infrastructure, Urbanization And Resistance In India, Preeti Sampat Feb 2015

Right To Land And The Rule Of Law: Infrastructure, Urbanization And Resistance In India, Preeti Sampat

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Special Economic Zones Act 2005, a critical infrastructure model, was enacted in India in two days amid total political consensus. Within two years, intense conflicts over land and resources erupted in SEZ areas across the country between corporate developers, the state, and peasants' and citizens' groups. In the ensuing furor, several SEZs foundered and Goa state unprecedentedly revoked its SEZ policy, suspending 15 SEZs, some with construction underway. Amid raging debates and accusations of corrupt real estate deals over SEZs and other "infrastructure" and urbanization investments, the central (federal) government attempted to redraft land acquisition policy, eventually enacting a …

The Edgy Relationship Between Sports Media And Sports Organizations In Egypt: The Urgency For An Effective Media Policy, Inas Mohamed Ali Mazhar Feb 2015

The Edgy Relationship Between Sports Media And Sports Organizations In Egypt: The Urgency For An Effective Media Policy, Inas Mohamed Ali Mazhar

Theses and Dissertations

This study delves into the edgy and often tense relationship between sports organizations and sports media in Egypt. The study confirms how this relationship, which is usually known as being "symbiotic", based on mutual benefits, has now become a burden on the two sides in their day-to-day working relationship. The study is based on qualitative research with data collected through in-depth interviews. A purposive sample of journalists and members of sports organizations were selected to discuss the reasons behind the broken symbiotic ties which led to the relationship being at stake. The study also aims at finding solutions and recommendations …

The Making Of Gender In Egyptian Families: A Cross-Class Engagement, Farah Moataz Atia Feb 2015

The Making Of Gender In Egyptian Families: A Cross-Class Engagement, Farah Moataz Atia

Theses and Dissertations

In the midst of an unstable political environment, a booming population, and a neoliberal atmosphere, it is impossible not to notice the wide socio-economic disparities in the urban capital of Cairo. ‘Ishash Kum Ghurab, Misr Al-Qadima is clogged with “informal” buildings contained by its old medieval structure (Sims, 2003, p. 6). It has been suggested by Sims (2003, p. 6) that most families residing in this area, where buildings frequently collapse, belong to the lower-income strata of the society. Nevertheless, I have not found it useful nor accurate to assume that the inhabitants of ‘Ishash Kum Ghurab belong to a …

Cantus Lamentus: Navigating Hiv Positive Mothers Subjectivities In Egypt Post 2011, Wesam Adel Hassan Feb 2015

Cantus Lamentus: Navigating Hiv Positive Mothers Subjectivities In Egypt Post 2011, Wesam Adel Hassan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the subjectivities of mothers living with HIV in relation to the exercised techniques of governing HIV and AIDS in Egypt. Drawing on the experiences of women living with HIV, in addition to the analysis of the National HIV Strategic frameworks and national media press articles, this thesis traces major events related to the bio-politics of HIV in Egypt post-2011. I conducted research with mothers living with HIV to explore how they perceived their individual experiences of living with HIV within the social and political context of Egypt post-2011. The research is an attempt to unravel glimpses of …

Between Egyptian Nationalism And Religion: Imagining The Nation From Below, Yara Moussa Sultan Feb 2015

Between Egyptian Nationalism And Religion: Imagining The Nation From Below, Yara Moussa Sultan

Theses and Dissertations

The January 25 revolution and the dramatic unfolding of events thereafter, have been a time of immense social, political and economic transformation in Egypt. Recent changes in political leadership, from the fall of Mubarak’s regime, to the Muslim Brotherhood’s (MB) ascent to power, and finally, to the landslide victory of the Armed Forces through Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s assuming of the presidency, have brought to light some of the dynamics of mass politics in Egypt. These transformations made visible a wide array of expressions of collective and national belonging as the Egyptian people came into contact with ideologically differentiated ruling regimes. …

The Impact Of A Cartoon Character’S Gender On Egyptian Girls’ Knowledge Of And Intentions Toward Pneumonia Prevention, Farah Hafez El-Shiaty Feb 2015

The Impact Of A Cartoon Character’S Gender On Egyptian Girls’ Knowledge Of And Intentions Toward Pneumonia Prevention, Farah Hafez El-Shiaty

Theses and Dissertations

Pneumonia kills 11% of children under the age of five in Egypt yearly. Studies suggest that health educational cartoons are effective ways to educate children about healthy practices to prevent diseases. The literature suggests that children tend to learn better from and imitate same-gender models more than opposite-gender models. Healthy Egyptians, a non-governmental organization, developed a health educational cartoon to educate young children on the preventative practices of pneumonia through a boy called Montasser as the main character. It was hypothesized that having a female character as the main character in this cartoon would increase the girls’ knowledge of and …

The Discourse Of Drug Use In Egypt: An Interdisciplinary Exploratory Study, Alejandro Gutierrez Feb 2015

The Discourse Of Drug Use In Egypt: An Interdisciplinary Exploratory Study, Alejandro Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis sets out to better understand how Egyptian society constructs and labels the ‘deviant’ behavior of drug use. However, it is not about drugs per se, it is about scrutinizing the complex process through which Egyptian society encounters, experiences, and regulates behavior. Through an interdisciplinary approach, it builds an alternative and critical understanding of a stigmatized group of individuals by describing how they shape or are shaped by the dynamic system in which they exist. Thus, it creates a conversation between the structures of power that regulate the moral economy of society on the one hand and individuals practicing …

Stable Isotope And Ancient Dna Analysis Of Dog Remains From Cathlapotle (45cl1), A Contact-Era Site On The Lower Columbia River, Kenneth M. Ames, Michael P. Richards, Camilla F. Speller, Dongya Y. Yang, R. Lee Lyman, Virginia L. Butler Feb 2015

Stable Isotope And Ancient Dna Analysis Of Dog Remains From Cathlapotle (45cl1), A Contact-Era Site On The Lower Columbia River, Kenneth M. Ames, Michael P. Richards, Camilla F. Speller, Dongya Y. Yang, R. Lee Lyman, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study reports ancient DNA (aDNA) and stable isotope analyses of eight dog skeletal elements from the Cathlapotle site on the Lower Columbia River of the western United States. The aDNA analysis confirmed the elements as dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). Two haplotypes were found, both of which group within dog Clade A, and have patchy distributions to the north in British Columbia and as far south as Teotihuacan (Mexico). The isotopic analysis showed that the dogs’ dietary protein was derived almost exclusively from marine sources. Lower Columbia River ethnohistoric accounts and Cathlapotle zooarchaeological records indicate that while marine fish were …
