Familiar Face Detection In 180ms, Matteo Visconti Di Oleggio Castello, M. Ida Gobbini Aug 2015

Familiar Face Detection In 180ms, Matteo Visconti Di Oleggio Castello, M. Ida Gobbini

Dartmouth Scholarship

The visual system is tuned for rapid detection of faces, with the fastest choice saccade to a face at 100ms. Familiar faces have a more robust representation than do unfamiliar faces, and are detected faster in the absence of awareness and with reduced attentional resources. Faces of family and close friends become familiar over a protracted period involving learning the unique visual appearance, including a view-invariant representation, as well as person knowledge. We investigated the effect of personal familiarity on the earliest stages of face processing by using a saccadic-choice task to measure how fast familiar face detection can happen. …

“’Chinese Don’T Drink Coffee!’”: Coffee And Class Liminality In Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Christian Aguiar Aug 2015

“’Chinese Don’T Drink Coffee!’”: Coffee And Class Liminality In Elaine Mar’S Paper Daughter, Christian Aguiar

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This article offers a reading of the foodservice spaces in Elaine Mar’s memoir Paper Daughter in order to suggest changes in the way we think about class liminality. It argues that by focusing not just on the way the socially-mobile narrator experiences liminality, but also on the ways her working-class parents and co-workers experience it, we can begin to consider some of the complexities and nuances the idea of the liminal offers. In so doing, the article suggests a slightly new approach to thinking about and teaching Paper Daughter.

Undecided Empire: The Travails Of Imperial Representation Of Filipinos At The Greater America Exposition, 1899, Michael C. Hawkins

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines the first formal exhibit of Filipinos under American rule at the Greater America Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1899. It focuses specifically on the remarkably discursive forms of representation at a time before official discourses of empire and the “Philippines” or “Filipinos” were established. In this sense the exposition marked a rare instance of true colonial encounter in which the contingencies and vulnerabilities of empire were plainly manifest. The exposition also provided a critical baseline by which to gauge evolving discourses of representation at subsequent expositions, particularly the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Keywords: Greater America Exposition • Omaha …

Fishermen, Fishmongers, And The Sea: Economic Restructuring And Gender Dynamics In A Philippine Community, Nelson Nava Turgo Aug 2015

Fishermen, Fishmongers, And The Sea: Economic Restructuring And Gender Dynamics In A Philippine Community, Nelson Nava Turgo

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle provides a place- and work-specific exposition of gendered transformation in a local economy in Quezon province in the Philippines, where the declining productivity of fisheries since 1985 has seen a concomitant boom in fish marketing in nearby auction houses. It presents ethnographic data on seven families whose fishermen-husbands virtually abandoned fishing and assumed household management while their wives took on work as full-time fishmongers. The fishermen coped with the loss of economic clout by asserting masculine power, which resulted in spousal tensions, restrictions on their wives’ mobility and social lives, and incidents of domestic violence. Keywords: fishermen • fishing community …

Papio Cranium From The Hominin-Bearing Site Of Malapa: Implications For The Evolution Of Modern Baboon Cranial Morphology And South African Plio-Pleistocene Biochronology, Christopher C. Gilbert, Christine M. Steininger, Job M. Kibii, Lee R. Berger Aug 2015

Papio Cranium From The Hominin-Bearing Site Of Malapa: Implications For The Evolution Of Modern Baboon Cranial Morphology And South African Plio-Pleistocene Biochronology, Christopher C. Gilbert, Christine M. Steininger, Job M. Kibii, Lee R. Berger

Publications and Research

A new partial cranium (UW 88-886) of the Plio-Pleistocene baboon Papio angusticeps from Malapa is identified, described and discussed. UW 88-886 represents the only non-hominin primate yet recovered from Malapa and is important both in the context of baboon evolution as well as South African hominin site biochronology. The new specimen may represent the first appearance of modern baboon anatomy and coincides almost perfectly with molecular divergence date estimates for the origin of the modern P. hamadryas radiation. The fact that the Malapa specimen is dated between ~2.026–2.36 million years ago (Ma) also has implications for the biochronology of other …

Voir Dire: Strategy And Tactics In The Defense Of Social And Political Activists, Murray R. Bowes

Akron Law Review

With the courts increasingly being the forum for legal disputes between those who demand change in the superstructure and those who represent (or are) the structure, a rather unfortunate by-product has evolved: a feeling that the courts can no longer adequately dispense justice.8 This manifests itself in beliefs that if one is prosecuted for activities that were designed to advance social change, either in violation of the law or not, that the individual will not be afforded a fair trial; 9 a reflection that the social or political activist will not be judged by an impartial jury….For the purposes of …

The Reach Of The Law: Sin, Crime And Poor Taste, Alexander B. Smith, Harriet Pollack

Akron Law Review

The past decade has been a period of intensive reevaluation of the law. The criminal law, in particular, has been subjected to an especially intensive criticism. These attacks fall largely into two categories: criticisms of the legitimacy of our penal codes, and criticisms of their efficiency.
Starting with the Civil Rights Movement of the Kennedy era with its heavy emphasis on civil disobedience as a tool of protest, the legitimacy of many of our laws was called into question. When Rosa Parks sat in the front of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama, she was not simply breaking the law; she …

Perbahasan Baik Dan Buruk (Al-Husn Wa Al-Qubh) Menurut Asha'irah Dan Kerelevenannya Dalam Mendepani Faham Nihilisme, M.K.N. Che Nordin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
