Death And Photography In East Asia: Funerary Use Of Portrait Photography, Jeehey Kim Sep 2015

Death And Photography In East Asia: Funerary Use Of Portrait Photography, Jeehey Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation expands and elaborates upon my 2009 project, 'Korean Funerary Photo-Portraiture,' which examined the uses of portrait photography in funerals and ancestor worship in Korea. By extending the geographic scope of the earlier project to encompass East Asia, its aim is to investigate how funerary photo-portraiture is intertwined with geopolitical issues across the region.

In order to explore the historical and socio-political layers of vernacular photography in East Asia, this dissertation compares the practice of funerary photo-portraiture in five countries by examining the basic concepts underpinning it. China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam all incorporate portrait photography into funerals …

Should Southern Baptists Baptize Their Children?: A Biblical, Historical, Theological Defense Of The Consistency Of The Baptism Of Young Children With Credobaptistic Practices, Robert Matz Sep 2015

Should Southern Baptists Baptize Their Children?: A Biblical, Historical, Theological Defense Of The Consistency Of The Baptism Of Young Children With Credobaptistic Practices, Robert Matz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Southern Baptists have expressed increasing degrees of alarm over allegedly rising rates of child baptisms. As a result, an increasing number of Southern Baptists have argued that the baptism of young children is inconsistent with Southern Baptists’ understandings of credobaptism and a regenerate church membership. Against these allegations, this dissertation asserts that children can be converted and when converted they should be baptized. The first chapter of this dissertation argues that water baptism is prescriptively contemporaneous with Spirit baptism. It establishes such based on the relationship between water and Spirit baptism as seen in the seven direct references to Spirit …

Late Quaternary Speleogenesis And Landscape Evolution In A Tropical Carbonate Island: Pango La Kuumbi (Kuumbi Cave), Zanzibar, Nikos Kourampas, Ceri Shipton, William Mills, Ruth Tibesasa, Henrietta Horton, Mark Horton, Mary Prendergast, Alison Crowther, Katerina Douka, Patrick Faulkner, Llorenç Picornell, Nicole Boivin

International Journal of Speleology

Kuumbi Cave is one of a group of caves that underlie a flight of marine terraces in Pleistocene limestone in eastern Zanzibar (Indian Ocean). Drawing on the findings of geoarchaeological field survey and archaeological excavation, we discuss the formation and evolution of Kuumbi Cave and its wider littoral landscape. In the later part of the Quaternary (last ca. 250,000 years?), speleogenesis and terrace formation were driven by the interplay between glacioeustatic sea level change and crustal uplift at rates of ca. 0.10-0.20 mm/yr. Two units of backreef/reef limestone were deposited during ‘optimal’ (highest) highstands, tentatively correlated with MIS 7 and …

Adopting Children From U. S. Public Foster Care: A Sociological Analysis With Practical Implications, Josephine A. Ruggiero Aug 2015

Adopting Children From U. S. Public Foster Care: A Sociological Analysis With Practical Implications, Josephine A. Ruggiero

Sociology Between the Gaps: Forgotten and Neglected Topics

Adoption has increased in importance as both an exit goal and exit outcome for 20-25% of children in public foster care. Although reunification with parents or another biological relative retains primacy as the first option for permanency planning, the percentage of children actually reunified with a biological family member has decreased by nine percent from 60% to 51%. The author uses data collected by the federal government and reported in AFCARS Reports collected over 16 fiscal years to analyze the principal demographic characteristics of children in U. S. public foster care; examine adoption and reunification as exit goals and outcomes …

Tacit Cultural Knowledge: An Instrumental Qualitative Case Study Of Mixed Methods Research In South Africa, Debra Rena Miller Aug 2015

Tacit Cultural Knowledge: An Instrumental Qualitative Case Study Of Mixed Methods Research In South Africa, Debra Rena Miller

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Notwithstanding the dramatic expansion of mixed methods research, research methodologies, methods, and findings are culturally situated. Problematically, studies conducted outside the global north often embrace canonical methodologies aimed at understanding concepts more explicit than tacit. Learning about the needs of researchers and participants in South Africa may bring to light taken-for-granted assumptions in Anglo-American orientations of mixed methods. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore aspects of tacit cultural knowledge that contextualize mixed methods research in South Africa.

In-person interviews among South African professors as well as a corpus of books, sections, journal articles, and theses informed the …

Informal Dispute Resolution Based On Adat Law: A Case Study Of Land Dispute In Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Najmu Laila Sopian Aug 2015

Informal Dispute Resolution Based On Adat Law: A Case Study Of Land Dispute In Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Najmu Laila Sopian

Indonesia Law Review

The issue of law enforcement is central to land property rights. Modes of property rights enforcement can be performed either with or without intervention of the state. This article focuses on the latter mode of enforcement; that is, how people manage to enforce their land rights without the involvement of state institutions and to what extent informal arrangements can offer effective enforcement and secure land property rights. This article also contributes to the debate on how formal and informal institutions can be used to secure property rights and resolve disputes over land ownership. In particular, this paper examines how the …

Kesepadanan Andung-Andung Batak Toba, Roswita Silalahi, Parlindungan Purba Aug 2015

Kesepadanan Andung-Andung Batak Toba, Roswita Silalahi, Parlindungan Purba

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Andung-Andung (AA) ‘lamentation’ refers to expressions of sadness caused by the death of a loved one in the Toba Batak community. Lamentation consists of poetic expressions and is predominantly recited by grieving wives to express their deepest anguish, making it difficult to translate because of its unique linguistic and cultural features. This study was conducted to document and translate AA into Indonesian using a descriptive-qualitative method. The data were collected through observation, recording, interviews, content analysis, and focus group discussions (FGDs). The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis technique involving linguistic anthropology to interpret meaning, combined with content analysis …

Power And Pride: The Mythologization Of The Cossack Figure In Russian History And Its Impact On Modern Russian National Identity, Rachael Ulrich Aug 2015

Power And Pride: The Mythologization Of The Cossack Figure In Russian History And Its Impact On Modern Russian National Identity, Rachael Ulrich

Kaleidoscope

Our expedition traveled to the Don Cossack Ust- Khopiorskaia Stanitsa to record mythologized cultural practices in the form of rituals and performances. Located on the banks of the Don and Khopior River junction, about 1,500 people reside in a village consisting of several streets of wooden and stone houses, a cultural center, a school, and a few small markets. Most remaining residents in the village are pensioners, who support their meager incomes with backyard gardens. The young who have finished primary school leave for the nearest city, Volgograd, to find work or pursue further studies, because opportunities for neither exist …

The Innovation Makerspace: Geographies Of Digital Fabrication Innovation In Greater New York City, Kathryn Dickerson Aug 2015

The Innovation Makerspace: Geographies Of Digital Fabrication Innovation In Greater New York City, Kathryn Dickerson

Theses and Dissertations

Desktop digital fabrication technology has the potential to powerfully alter the economics, geography, and sociology of production. The desktop technology cannot reach its potential for widespread impact until it improves in quality and decreases in price. Makerspaces have emerged in the United States in the last eight years as informal social organizations where innovation in this technology may be occurring. This study examines whether innovation in digital fabrication technology has occurred, or has the potential to occur, at makerspaces in the New York City area.

Tradition, Innovation, And The Value Of The Liberal Arts, Paul Jay Aug 2015

Tradition, Innovation, And The Value Of The Liberal Arts, Paul Jay

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

My main message about defending the humanities and liberal arts is that divided we lose. Divided we lose. What's great about our disciplines, collectively, is the way in which they preserve and value the past, but in a context in which that past is subject to reflective and constructive critique, so that the ways in which we think about what constitutes the human keeps changing, and the collection of texts, ideas, historical events, material realities, and cultural forms we discuss with our students keeps expanding as well. The liberal arts are living arts. They are about both the perpetuation and …

The Whole Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts: Being Whole In The Workplace, Cristine Margaret Atienza, Andrea Santiago Aug 2015

The Whole Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts: Being Whole In The Workplace, Cristine Margaret Atienza, Andrea Santiago

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

In a world where the benefit to the common good has been overshadowed by the need to spur consumer demand to increase profitability, one begins to wonder if business has turned a blind eye and if the workforce has grown so detached that who they are at work is different from who they are outside the workplace. While there are many challenges that a worker encounters inside and outside the workplace, it is the contention of this paper that it is possible to remain integral and not to disintegrate amidst so much pressures, provided organization is there to support such …

My Failure With An Ojibwe Artist: Reflections On Initial Intercultural Relationships, Kevin Slivka Aug 2015

My Failure With An Ojibwe Artist: Reflections On Initial Intercultural Relationships, Kevin Slivka

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In this article, I examine a first meeting with Ojibwe artist, Terry Kemper, during which I failed to initiate our meeting with the gift of tobacco. I explore failure in a relational event with Kemper and discuss the intentions of my ethnographic research, my researcher-identity, and my mistake of initially neglecting Ojibwe protocol during my first meeting with the artist, in addition to the role of tobacco in Ojibwe communities. Through aesthetic inquiry I reframe failure in an installation entitled, "Toward Reconciliation” that has potential pedagogical implications, with hope that it avoids a static and impotent result. I intend the …

The Failure Of Whiteness In Art Education: A Personal Narrative Informed By Critical Race Theory, Sunny Spillane Aug 2015

The Failure Of Whiteness In Art Education: A Personal Narrative Informed By Critical Race Theory, Sunny Spillane

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article explores failure from the perspective of a white art educator interested in social justice and educational equity. Interconnected notions of failure are explored, including: the author’s learning from personal failure as a process of professional growth over the course of her career; the specter of “school failure” and its impact on K-12 students’ educational opportunities and experiences; entrenched, systemic inequities in public schools and their failure to serve marginalized students and communities; and the potential complicity of the author’s individual professional failures – if left unaddressed – in perpetuating racialized inequities in art education. Whiteness, or white power, …
