Institutional Silence And The Governance Of Women College Athletes’ Reproductive Autonomy In The United States, Tarlan Chahardovali, Molly Harry Ph.D., Emily S. Mann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
This study examines how women college athletes understand their pregnancy-related rights and protections and how institutional communication – or its absence – shapes reproductive autonomy within college sport. Guided by a reproductive justice framework, it conceptualizes pregnancy as a site of reproductive governance shaped by institutional policies, norms, and silences within performance-oriented sport organizations. The analysis draws on semi-structured interviews with 25 women college athletes from various NCAA Division I institutions in the United States, conducted between September 2023 and July 2024 in the post-Dobbs legal context, and uses reflexive thematic analysis to examine athletes’ knowledge of Title IX and …
Fiber Consumption Of Three Lemur Species With Varying Dietary Specializations, Dylan Daniels
Fiber Consumption Of Three Lemur Species With Varying Dietary Specializations, Dylan Daniels
Honors Capstones
Fiber is an important macronutrient as a source of energy for maintaining animal health. My research question is what is the fiber content of foods consumed by lemur species with different dietary specializations (Propithecus diadema, Eulemur fuvlus, and Hapalemur griseus) and are there seasonal changes? 172 plant foods were collected in Tsinjoarivo, Madagascar during the resource-abundant and lean season. I analyzed these samples using the neutral detergent fiber method, which simulates digestion and measures insoluble fiber. Knowing how much fiber lemurs consume and how they adapt to seasonal variation in the food supply will allow for restorative actions to be …
Burnout & Moral Injury Metrics Inform Evidence-Based Nursing Workplace Solutions, Sarrah Spohnholtz, Brian Douthit, Carolyn Audit
Burnout & Moral Injury Metrics Inform Evidence-Based Nursing Workplace Solutions, Sarrah Spohnholtz, Brian Douthit, Carolyn Audit
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Purpose: To implement real time burnout data that enables nurse leaders to identify and respond based on environmental risk factors.
Background: Burnout and moral injury among nurses are driven by increased demands and emotional toll of care delivery. These conditions compromise nurse well-being and affect patient outcomes and safety.4 Many contributing factors stem from under-resourced environments where nurses cannot provide the care they believe patients need. Resilience training can help mitigate stress, but systemic reform is needed to prevent burnout and moral injury before they occur.2
Methods: In September 2025, the WellNurse Program implemented environmental risk metrics into …

The Heart Of Care: Perceptions And Management Of Pediatric Cancer Across Cultures, Kit Lamison
Theses & ETDs
The current study aimed to determine the interaction between cultural background, perceptions of illness, and family management in Chinese American and White American caregivers of children diagnosed with cancer. The current study was conducted to gain knowledge on how families from different backgrounds respond to the devastating experience of having a child diagnosed with cancer. To achieve this goal, participants were recruited through online communities focused on pediatric cancer and traditional Chinese medicine. A 135-item online survey containing the revised Illness Perceptions Questionnaire (Moss-Morris et al., 2002) and the Family Management Measure (Knafl et al., 2011) was distributed to participants …
Unamuno, Agon, And Communication: Outlines Of A Quixotic Philosophy, Christopher Rodriguez Cristobal
Unamuno, Agon, And Communication: Outlines Of A Quixotic Philosophy, Christopher Rodriguez Cristobal
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of the present thesis is to comment on the philosophy of Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo as presented in The Tragic Sense of Life in Men and Peoples, and to propose a possible line for its systematization focusing on the themes of selfhood and communication. I endeavor to do so, on the one hand, by contrasting the articulation of certain lines of thought in the text to their appearance in other of the author’s major works such as Agony of Christianity and Life on Don Quixote & Sancho; and, on the other hand, elaborating on some of the …

Who Can Dance If They Want To?: Intersections Of Dance, Gender, And Political Control In Late Archaic And Early Classical Athens, Adeline P. Strickler
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis investigates the evidence for women's public choruses in the polis of Athens and the wider Greek world prior to the 6th century BCE and their decline in Athens following the Kleisthenic reforms of 509/508 BCE. Emphasising analysis of visual sources through Athenian fabric vases in the Beazley archive, and supporting literary evidence, this research seeks to establish a base of evidence for a neglected area of dance and women's research in the classics. Additionally, by analyzing the significance of choral dance in polis social and political life, this research seeks potential reasons for the lack of a culture …

Rekindling Hearth: An Investigation And Discussion Of The Traditional And Evolving Roles Of Hearth In Architecture, Ruth E. Prenzler
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research explores the evolving role of the hearth in domestic architecture, examining its historical significance and its continuing symbolic and architectural significance. Once essential for heat, cooking, and gathering, the hearth has shifted from necessity to nostalgic artifact due to technological advances and changing domestic patterns. This study reexamines the hearth’s spatial, social, and functional roles in architecture through a combination of literature review, theoretical analysis, and visual diagramming. Six case studies, spanning pre-modern to contemporary housing, are analyzed to identify patterns and transformations in hearth placement and significance. Through detailed diagrams, the paper offers a visual and theoretical …

Course Insight Portfolio: Math 1080, A Gentle Introduction To Infinite Series, Igor Luis Aureliano, Leyanis Falcon Hernandez, Ross George, Fnu Monika
Publications
This lesson aims to introduce the concept of an infinite series through geometric representations and partial sums to help students develop an intuitive understanding of convergence. A common misconception students may have when first encountering infinite series is the belief that “a sum of infinitely many things must be infinite”. Through the study of a convergent geometric series, students will investigate how the limit of partial sums can produce a finite value, thereby addressing this misconception and developing a more accurate understanding of infinite series.
Why Is Living Still A B*Tch A Hundred Years Later? Finding Cultural Meaning In Adaptations Of Spring Awakening, Leah Marcil
Why Is Living Still A B*Tch A Hundred Years Later? Finding Cultural Meaning In Adaptations Of Spring Awakening, Leah Marcil
Theses & ETDs
Inspired by my unique experience working on the musical Spring Awakening by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, this thesis asks the question: what type of cultural meanings do adaptations of the story of Spring Awakening create and transmit? In order to answer this question I first investigate the cultural context of Frühlings Erwachen , the original play by Frank Wedekind the musical is adapted from, in Chapter One. Chapter One also allows me to discuss translation as a form of adaptation by analyzing different English versions of the play. Chapter Two focuses on the debut Broadway production of Spring Awakening …

Let's Play A Lovegame: How College Hookup Culture Came To Be, How It Functions On A University Campus, And The Greek Organizations That Perpetuate It At Butler University, Ella Gray Tucker
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
“Let’s Play a LoveGame” examines how hookup culture functions, is perpetuated, and impacts students on a college campus. By understanding the historical context of its creation, I analyze the multitude of factors that aided it to evolve into what it is today. Although hookup culture is considered part of the undergraduate “college experience”, it is negatively impacting students' mental well-being and their understanding of romantic relationships. With Butler University as my case study, I have come to find that Greek Organizations within the National Panhellenic Conference and Interfraternity Council hold events that enable hookup culture to permeate Greek row which …
Examining The Degree Of Sedentism At A Disturbed Woodland Period Site In Pickens County, South Carolina, Kathryn Dorn
Examining The Degree Of Sedentism At A Disturbed Woodland Period Site In Pickens County, South Carolina, Kathryn Dorn
All Theses
This paper examines lithic artifacts from the Fort Rutledge archaeology site in Pickens County, South Carolina, a region of the state that is lacking in archaeological research, to investigate Woodland Period site usage and duration. Fort Rutledge, a multicomponent site now on Clemson University’s main campus, has undergone multiple cultural site transitions. These include Cherokee settlement, the Revolutionary War, the construction of a Daughters of the American Revolution monument, the damming of Lake Hartwell, and disturbances from the local community that have disrupted the stratigraphy and complicated artifact dating. Previous excavations (2020 - 2023) recovered Revolutionary War era artifacts alongside …
Understanding Music In The Digital Era: Media & Listening Changes, William H. Gawtry
Understanding Music In The Digital Era: Media & Listening Changes, William H. Gawtry
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Our ever-growing reliance on technology and digital media has profoundly impacted how we consume music in the internet age. In analyzing music semiology, particularly by using music semiology as a method, I analyze Ethel Cain’s Preacher’s Daughter, the differences between physical and digital media are assessed as well as how digital technology is changing the listening experience, both in terms of quality and quantity. The drastic shift from analog to digital has inherently changed access and distribution, while also expanding the interpretive tools available to all listeners. A variety of factors—such as the immediate gratification from streaming services and …
Unmaking And Remaking Crimean Tatar Identity Stalin’S Deportation, Sürgün Stories, And The Claiming Of Indigeneity, Milo A. Clarkson
Unmaking And Remaking Crimean Tatar Identity Stalin’S Deportation, Sürgün Stories, And The Claiming Of Indigeneity, Milo A. Clarkson
International Studies Honors Projects
The Crimean Tatars exist within a framework of historical and modern Russian settler colonial oppression. By examining their preferred form of identification, this thesis argues that claiming indigeneity holds promise for combating this colonial structure. Further, it identifies the construction of collective memories of the Sürgün (1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatars) in virtual museum project Tamirlar’s oral histories as a form of discursive decolonization—the reclamation of cultural, linguistic, and historical representation and primacy on the land. Novel analysis of fifty interviews with Sürgün survivors preserves indigenous Crimean identity and challenges the retrospective settler colonial construction of Crimea as “Russian.”

Using Non-Invasive Metal Detecting, Ground-Penetrating Radar, And Light Detection And Ranging Surveys To Locate Non-Extant Structures On A Plantation In Charleston County, South Carolina, Thompson Mccormick Teasdale
All Theses
Many historic sites across the United States including plantations such as those in the South Carolina Lowcountry are increasingly at risk of development pressures, environmental changes, and the general loss of more ephemeral buildings associated with these sites. There is a growing preservation need to understand these more ephemeral buildings, especially their connection to enslaved individuals. However, with so many having been lost already or in the process of deteriorating, this area of study is increasingly becoming the purview of archaeologists who can study non-extant examples. Traditional methods of archaeological survey such as open-area excavations and shovel tests are not …

Dis/Remembrance: Expressions Of Intergenerational Memory And Where Legacy Lingers: American Warfare, 50 Years From Saigon, Eli(Se) Davidson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Over fifty years from the Fall of Saigon, the United States continues to question its participation in unjust warfare, both as a nation and as a people. This study examines the transmission of war stories amongst families: specifically, what becomes negotiated in the thresholds of memory and narrative, and what might become of those spaces across past, present, and future. While prior discourse has centered on the authority and authenticity of war memory through political discourse, historical narrative, and public memorialization, the role of storytelling within families remains underexplored. This research addresses that gap through interdisciplinary inquiry and qualitative ethnography …
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Performing (For The) Guru: A Performance Studies Approach To The Study Of Cults, Todd M. Brown
Dissertations
This project approaches a long-term experience of living in a cult through a performance studies lens. Utilizing autoethnographic methods, it explores personal insights and observations from years within the inner-circle of a coercive religious environment under tyrannical leadership. A variety of systems and relationships are narrated and analyzed according to three categories: ritualization, deployability, and occupation. Ritualization explains how a body becomes imbued with the rhythms and mantras of a cultic milieu. Deployability describes how this body is put into action at the service of the leadership. Occupation, as a metaphor, illuminates how a cultic subject becomes filled with the …
Dental Wear In Medieval Hungarian Populations, Sutton Walters
Dental Wear In Medieval Hungarian Populations, Sutton Walters
Honors College Theses
Dental wear can reveal past human behavior, offering insight into diet, daily activities and cultural practices (Berbesque et al., 2012; Deter, 2009; Estalrrich & Rosas, 2015; Górka, 2016; Molnar, 2008; Smith, 1984; Watson, 2014). Dental wear can reconstruct past life when other evidence is limited. This paper will address whether dental wear patterns observed in two medieval Hungarian populations, Kiskundorozsma–Kettőshatár I (KK) and SárrétudvariHízóföld (S), reflect sexual dimorphism patterns seen in hunter-gatherer vs. agriculturalist populations. Previous research demonstrates clear differences in wear between high- and lowwear subsistence strategies, whereas other studies report minimal or no sexual dimorphism and little variation …

The Backrooms: An Ethnodocumentary Demo, Augustine Rodriguez
Whittier Scholars Program
The following is an introductory and experimental EthnoDocumentary demo. It is meant to be shown as a proof of concept and introduction to the topics discussed in the accompanying literature review. The project takes on the internet trend of the Backrooms and its surrounding fanbase. The overall thesis of the project is that internet trends do not exist in a vacuum and are highly reflective of the demographic and cultural background of those who engage with them. In the case of The Backrooms we can trace this to the idea of Gen Z nostalgia through “liminal spaces” and what different …
Ecclesial Reconciliation And Peacebuilding In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Innocent Mushobekwa Zirhumanana
Ecclesial Reconciliation And Peacebuilding In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Innocent Mushobekwa Zirhumanana
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) exemplifies a society marked by recurring cycles of violence, rooted in colonial exploitation, authoritarian rule, and protracted conflict. These dynamics have fractured both social cohesion and ecclesial memory, particularly among marginalized groups such as the Banyamulenge, whose contested belonging reflects broader patterns of exclusion in the Great Lakes region.
Within this context, the Catholic Church—despite its moral authority—has oscillated between complicity and prophetic engagement. The leadership of Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya illustrates both the Church’s ambivalence and its potential as a mediator in processes of peace and reconciliation.
Drawing on Robert Schreiter’s theology of …
The Conditions For The Possibility Of Goodhart’S Law In Educational Assessment And The Subversion Of Learning, Marty Kalas
The Conditions For The Possibility Of Goodhart’S Law In Educational Assessment And The Subversion Of Learning, Marty Kalas
University Honors Program Senior Projects
The essential aim of education is learning, and our assessment practices have the potential to subvert that aim. In the United States, assessment has become ubiquitous in education. Students are presented with exams and assignments that are judged by their teachers and returned to them, usually graded and occasionally with feedback. Taking and passing these assessments has become a central focus of our educational system. However, Goodhart’s law – “when a measure becomes a target it ceases to be a good measure” – warns us there may be a problem with using grades as a target (Strathern, 1997). This problem …
Experiences Of Hispanic/Latine Graduate Students In Unco’S Audiology And Speech-Language Pathology Programs Within A Hispanic-Serving Institution Context: Qualitative Thematic Analysis From A Moderated Focus Group, Ashley Fuhrman

Words And Phrases That Matter: A Corpus Analysis Of Vocabulary And Phraseological Coverage In Myanmar's High School English Textbooks, Kaung Hla Zan
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
"Myanmar’s high school education relies on centralized EFL textbooks as the primary source of English input for a significant population of Myanmar youth. Following curriculum reforms aiming for communicative competence, this study provides a corpus-based evaluation of the lexical and phraseological composition of Grades 10 to 12 (high school) textbooks. Using a multi-list approach, this study profiled the textbooks against the New General Service List (NGSL) and the Academic Vocabulary List (AVL) for vocabulary coverage. To determine the frequency and coverage of academic phrases, the textbooks were profiled against three lists of academic bundles identified by Simpson-Vlach and Ellis (2010), …
An Invasion Of The Intimate Sphere: The Manipulation Of Libido Under Totalitarian Regimes, Elyssa Lucero
An Invasion Of The Intimate Sphere: The Manipulation Of Libido Under Totalitarian Regimes, Elyssa Lucero
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This paper examines the temporal nature of libidinal control in the totalitarian systems represented in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Arguing that the most enduring forms of domination operate through the reorganization of desire, the essay explores how regimes intervene in familial, romantic, and social attachments to redirect affective energy towards the state. Orwell depicts a primitive, reactive phase of control in which attachments are violently ruptured, whereas Huxley imagines an advanced system that operates through preemption, never allowing attachments to form. Drawing on Freud’s theory of redirected libido, Berlant’s theory of Cruel Optimism, Marxist …
