Living Archaeology: A Comparative Perspective On How Archaeologists Can Study And Document The Present, Alia S. Moran
Living Archaeology: A Comparative Perspective On How Archaeologists Can Study And Document The Present, Alia S. Moran
Honors Capstones
Archaeology has long remained a social science that has tended to exclude sustained consideration of contemporary societies in the analysis of material culture. In recent decades, approaches such as ethnoarchaeology and the archaeology of the contemporary have expanded the field to include the study of present-day societies through material culture. Inspired by my involvement in the Thais in Illinois Project, which focused on documenting the Thai American immigrant experience in the greater Chicago area to produce an oral history collection, alongside other goals, this thesis intends to further explore how archaeological practice can be used to understand everyday issues in …

Neuroarchitecture: Color Psychology And Its Impact On The Built Environment, Jean Morgan
Neuroarchitecture: Color Psychology And Its Impact On The Built Environment, Jean Morgan
Theses
Neuroarchitecture merges neuroscience and architecture, examining how built environments affect our emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. One of the principles of this interdisciplinary topic focuses on Color psychology, which explores the profound influence of colors on human emotions, behaviors, and cognitive responses. In the built environment, the strategic use of color extends beyond aesthetics, shaping user experiences, functionality, and psychological well-being. This thesis explores the interplay between color psychology and architectural design, highlighting how color choices influence mood, productivity, and social interactions within spaces. The main focus will examine the relationship between colors and equal causation in psychological effects. The …
Critics' Reception Of Women's Novels In Saudi Arabia, Ibrahem Khlaofa Almarhaby
Critics' Reception Of Women's Novels In Saudi Arabia, Ibrahem Khlaofa Almarhaby
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
This paper examines how male critics in Saudi Arabia received the pre-1980 works of Saudi female novelists in their critical studies. It seeks to explain why many Saudi and Arab male literary critics either ignored or decried these pioneering novels by highlighting the essential criteria they adopted in their evaluation and criticism of such texts. This paper establishes that these novels were poorly received-and unjustly so-compared to those written by men in the same period. Male critics subconsciously dismissed or disregarded these novels on the grounds that they were of limited literary quality, did not belong to what was accepted …

Saudi Arabia's Colourful Culture: Exploring Colour In Saudi Heritage Homes' Al-Majlis Rooms, Douha Attiah, Abeer A. Alawad
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
Saudi Arabia considers its architectural heritage a part of its wealth and has extensively tried to preserve it. Several studies on Saudi Arabia’s heritage, particularly its architectural heritage, have been conducted; however, there is a lack of studies detailing elements of the interiors of historical buildings. This study analyses the colours in interior spaces of traditional Saudi Arabian houses. A descriptive-analytical method is applied to eight traditional houses from the four main regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: central, eastern, western and southern. This study demonstrates that the two houses selected from each of the four regions have similarities …

The Body's Semantic Forms And Transformations - The Novel Dance As An Example, Dalal Bander Al-Malki
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
This study discusses the concept of the body’s semantic forms and transformations in Moageb Al-Zahrani’s novel, ‘Dance’. It reviews the body’s manifestation as a source of value and power by considering standards such as colour, race and gender. According to these physical measures, an individual’s relationship with themselves and their surroundings is formed either in harmony or conflict. The study examines . the cultural semantics of the real and symbolic body through the forces influencing collective memory — religion and society. The study relies on the descriptive- . analytical method, with the assistance of the cultural approach, to analyse the …

The Impact Of Literary Text On The Relationship Between Language And Culture, Shahla A. Ujayli
The Impact Of Literary Text On The Relationship Between Language And Culture, Shahla A. Ujayli
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
This research studies the role of literary texts in the restoration of the hidden lexicon, as the language of the literary text transfers historical experiences, styles and gender, which enable the recipient to build the cultural perceptions parallel to the written text. The research examines the ‘hunting’ theme in two novels: ‘An Najdi’ by the Kuwaiti novelist Taleb Al Rifaee and ‘Al Fayyumi’ by the Saudi novelist Taher Al Zahrani. There is no doubt that this language that we speak is not merely a lexical vocabulary, but rather the language in its own cultural context, and this specificity constitutes what …
Kafr Kama: The Marble Finds, Anastasia Shapiro
Kafr Kama: The Marble Finds, Anastasia Shapiro
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The study of 127 marble fragments from the excavation of the Umayyad building at Kafr Kama revealed that most of the samples are made of Proconnesian marble and originally belonged to panels that likely decorated a church demolished by the earthquake of 749 CE. The collapse of the building caused the breakage of the panels, which then became spolia. They were marked and reshaped into small geometric forms, such as octagons or trapezoids measuring up to 20–30 cm. Given that no completed items were found, the studied assemblage probably represents the workplace of a stonemason active in Umayyad-period Kafr Kama.
Kafr Kama: The Coins, Robert Kool
Kafr Kama: The Coins, Robert Kool
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
The excavation at Kafr Kama yielded five coins. One coin, minted in Rome, dates to the reign of Constantius II, while the others are from the Early Islamic period. Among these are a gold dinar and two silver dirhams from the early Abbasid period, including a rare dirham minted in al-Haruniya during the brief reign of the caliph al-Hadi. The coin assemblage attests to activity at the site during the third quarter of the eighth century CE.
Kafr Kama: Building, Oil Press And Glass Industry From The Late Byzantine–Early Umayyad Periods And Remains From The Middle Bronze Age, Roman And Mamluk Periods / כפר כמא: מבנה, בית בד ותעשיית זכוכית מהתקופות הביזנטית המאוחרת–האומיית הקדומה ושרידים מהתקופות הברונזה התיכונה, הרומית והממלוכית, Omar Zidan
Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
A salvage excavation south of Kafr Kama revealed four occupational strata (IV–I). The two lowermost strata yielded meager architectural remains dating to the Middle Bronze Age (Stratum IV) and the Roman period (Stratum III), indicating early settlement at the site. Stratum II, which comprised two distinct occupational phases, yielded a building, an oil press and a glass-production furnace, along with glass-production debris, dating from the transition between the Byzantine and Umayyad periods. The site appears to have been abandoned during the late Umayyad period, with resettlement occurring in the Mamluk period, as indicated by a Mamluk-period refuse pit uncovered in …
Queer Creativity In A State Of Surveillance: Community Art-Making As Embodied Resistance, Rachel "Frankie" Uhrig
Queer Creativity In A State Of Surveillance: Community Art-Making As Embodied Resistance, Rachel "Frankie" Uhrig
Expressive Therapies Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between community art-making and queer resilience in response to state-sanctioned violence and surveillance. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the impact of visibility/invisibility on individuals within a community that is heavily policed and how less Eurocentric, medicalized approaches to support can serve these individuals. To better study and understand this approach, multiple sessions of community-based open studios were held from the writer’s home. Research was gathered from a group of individuals already in community together through the spectrum of queerness within a roller derby team. Participants were given a variety of materials to work with and …
The Meaning Of Physical Activity In The Context Of Health Sciences: A Concept Analysis, Martín G. Farinola
The Meaning Of Physical Activity In The Context Of Health Sciences: A Concept Analysis, Martín G. Farinola
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Physical activity has been defined in numerous ways. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a concept analysis of the existing physical activity definitions in the health sciences literature to evaluate its conceptual precision and assess the need for a revised or novel concept better suited for this domain. The concept analysis was accomplished using tools derived from philosophical semantics. The analysis identified six definitions that explicitly state what physical activity is with sufficient clarity to allow for conceptual examination. The findings indicated that these definitions frequently merge the concept of physical activity with its contextual attributes. To address these semantic …

Predator Or Prey: The Analysis Of Gender And Race On The Perception Of Black Men As Sexual Assault Victims, Jordyn Livingston, Dr. Florencia Cornet
Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal
Men sexual assault victims have gained more attention in recent years. Despite the growing sociological literature on violence against men, previous research provides little acknowledgment of Black men sexual assault victims. In this manuscript, I analyze emerging literature in the socio-medical sciences to explore how gender and race affects the perceptions of Black men as sexual assault victims. Specifically, I utilize intersectionality as a theoretical framework to synthesize literature on blackness and masculinity in sexual assault victims to conclude that there is an intersectional point that disadvantages Black males, portraying them as sexual predators. In so doing, I provide research …
Commercializing The Body: Trade. Contract, And Agency In The Merchant Of Venice, John Gullege, Jennifer Tyburczy
Commercializing The Body: Trade. Contract, And Agency In The Merchant Of Venice, John Gullege, Jennifer Tyburczy
Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal
In this article, I take Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice as my backdrop to explore and illuminate how the commercialization of flesh and body in the play can only fully be understood through its contextualization in sociological concepts of gift-exchange, early modern contract law, and the rise of the merchant class during this period. At this time, English economy, contract law, and cultural notions of agency/autonomy were all shifting and expanding both theoretically and pragmatically, and much has been said about the historical consequences these changes caused – how mercantile culture permeated English society, how the reexamination of contractual …

The Cranial Morphology Of Large Wild Versus Captive Felids, Bryttin Boyde, Hannah Selvey
Caravel Undergraduate Research Journal
Studies have shown that carnivores in captivity that are fed soft diets have more periodontal problems and that the morphology of their skeletons, skulls specifically, responds to environmental and behavior factors. Considering that captive diet affects teeth and gums, we have conducted research on Dr. Adam Hartstone-Rose’s hypothesis that variation will also be discernible through the examination of cranial morphology. We compared captive and wild lions Panthera leo and tigers Panthera tigris to see if differences were present, then analyzed data collected by a microscribe using a 3D morphometric analysis program. Next, Principal Component Analysis was completed to account for …
An Exploration Of The Application Of Threshold Concepts In Sport Management, Debra Burke, Kadie Otto, Aj Grube, Charlie Parrish, Dan Grube
An Exploration Of The Application Of Threshold Concepts In Sport Management, Debra Burke, Kadie Otto, Aj Grube, Charlie Parrish, Dan Grube
Global Sport Business Journal
Jan Meyer and Ray Land introduced the theory of threshold concepts to identify learning outcomes that represent a fundamental shift in the understanding of a subject which distinguishes how experts in the discipline internalize the discipline (Meyer & Land, 2006). They described the mastery of threshold concepts as being “akin to passing through a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something” (Meyer & Land, 2006, p. 3). Threshold concepts as defined by Meyer and Land (2006) are characterized by these features:
- Transformative: Once understood, a threshold concept changes the way in which the student …
Mouth, Sex, And Hungry Heart: Anatomy Of The Short-Form Fairy Tale Retelling, Emma M. Murray
Mouth, Sex, And Hungry Heart: Anatomy Of The Short-Form Fairy Tale Retelling, Emma M. Murray
English Honors Projects
This project traces the past fifty years of short-form fairy tale retellings authored by women, identifying formal and thematic continuities that define the mode. Building on Adrienne Rich’s concept of “revisioning,” it argues that the political work of these intertextual tales has evolved alongside feminist and queer theory, the emergence of fairy tale studies, and the cultural dominance of children’s fairy tale media. It delineates the short-form retelling as a distinct genre, highlighting its subversive feminist tendencies, and draws on affect, aesthetic, and queer theory, and genre studies to show how these texts reshape narrative expectations and cultural norms.
Objects In The Sunset, Iskander Guetta
Objects In The Sunset, Iskander Guetta
Masters of Environmental Design Theses
This research explores everyday design practices in the Maghreb shaped by economic, political, and ecological struggles amid transnational debates on decolonizing design. To do so, it looks at objects in, through and with the sunset. Taking المغرب — the place where the sun sets — as a conceptual lens, Objects in the Sunset illuminates the savoir-faire born from dispossession, scarcity, and epistemic violence. Working across different scales of the built environment — infrastructures, spaces, objects, and materials — it shifts design away from Eurocentric conceptions: from rationalization to resourcefulness, homogeneity to heterogeneity, optimization to adaptation, disposability to repair, and universal …
Learning Through Reading: Confronting Novel Linguistic Forms In Literature, Quinn Doyle
Learning Through Reading: Confronting Novel Linguistic Forms In Literature, Quinn Doyle
German Studies Honors Projects
How do readers learn to engage with novel forms of written language that fall outside of their established linguistic repertoire? And how do texts themselves facilitate this process? This thesis looks for answers to these questions in literary theory, multilingualism studies, applied linguistics, and a diverse corpus of literary works. I propose a comprehensive descriptive vocabulary of novel language use in literature, and then observe how these frameworks work in concert in an exemplary text by analyzing Christine Brooke-Rose’s multilingual novel Between. I conclude by discussing how the “exceptional” cases explored in this thesis can change our understanding of …

I Lost My Number, Can I Have Yours? Body Image Satisfaction With Sexually Dimorphic Traits Is Associated With Men's Dating Anxiety And Confidence, David A. Frederick, Tania A. Reynolds, Nikoline L. Smart, Justin R. Garcia, David A. Puts
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Evolutionary scientists posit that sexual selection processes caused males to develop sexually dimorphic traits to aid them during intrasexual competition and increase their likelihood of being chosen as mates. Evolutionary social sciences have extensively examined women's preferences for traits such as muscle mass and voice pitch, reasoning that these traits serve as cues of men's ability to provide direct benefits (e.g., resources) and indirect (genetic) benefits passed on to offspring. At the same time, body image researchers have extensively focused on the social causes and consequences of men's dissatisfaction with their muscularity and body fat. We connected these two research …
Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox
Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox
Journal of Conscious Evolution
Active imagination is a key technique of Jungian analysis. Despite its centrality, and its potential importance beyond Jungian psychology to the area of systems neuroscience, psychology, and consciousness studies, there are no known neurological mechanisms underlying this psychological phenomenon. There is a history of using the types of mental imagery used in active imagination to explore consciousness. The development and use of active imagination is briefly reviewed, and a case is developed that the neurology underlying active imagination would be fruitfully explored by considering it a special case of mystical experience. Active imagination primarily uses the right hemisphere processing of …

Two Sides Of The Same Cycle: Understanding The Experiences Of Domestic Violence Survivors And Perpetrators, Avery M. Blevins
Honors Theses
Domestic violence has been a prevalent concern throughout society for many years but has recently begun to cumulate awareness from policymakers, people in the community, and individuals in service professions. There have been various changes made to the way that we define and understand domestic violence which has further led to the need to explore and educate on this concern. This paper aims to understand the experiences of both survivors and perpetrators that led to such violent circumstances. This creates a more multifaceted understanding of domestic violence and aids in implementing effective resources to both prevent and intervene in violent …
