Does Our Fear Of Death Stem From Threatened Belongingness?, Stan Treger
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I examine the relative contribution to worldview defense (i.e., upholding one’s cultural worldviews) provided by the thoughts of one’s death and perceptions of curbed close relationships.
The need to belong, to form meaningful and strong ties with others, is what many social psychologists believe to be one of the most fundamental and strongest motivations that humans possess (Baumeister, 2012; Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Kenrick, Griskevicius, Neuberg, & Schaller, 2010; Tomasello, 2014). The human brain is “hard-wired” to be around others (Beckes & Coan, 2011). In fact, large social group sizes of humans’ evolutionary past may have contributed …

Device, Method, And Algorithm To Assess Changes In Cardiac Output Via Intracardiac Impedance Monitoring, Geoffrey Fredrick Schau
Device, Method, And Algorithm To Assess Changes In Cardiac Output Via Intracardiac Impedance Monitoring, Geoffrey Fredrick Schau
Dissertations and Theses
Cardiac output, the volume of blood pumped by the heart over time, is a powerful clinical metric used by physicians to assess overall cardiac health and patient well-being. However, current cardiac output estimation methods are typically invasive, time-consuming, expensive, or some combination of all three. Patients that receive artificial cardiac pacemaker devices are particularly susceptible to cardiac dysfunction and often require long-term cardiac monitoring support.
This thesis proposes a novel cardiac output monitoring solution which leverages an implantable intracardiac medical device. The principles of traditional impedance cardiography, an established cardiac output monitoring technique in practice for over fifty years, have …

The Effects Of Tourism In Jamaica, Natalie Kearns
The Effects Of Tourism In Jamaica, Natalie Kearns
Honors Theses
Tourism is a fast and continuously growing industry throughout every region of the world. The effect that tourism has on a location usually isn’t the first thought when vacationers enter their destination location. In order to understand the effect of tourists and the tourist industry have had on Jamaica, I examined Jamaica’s historical development, including the tourist industry and the racial inequalities that developed as slaves were brought to the island. Then, using theories on place, identity, and authenticity, I conducted a content analysis of images tourists see while researching vacations to Jamaica.
This analysis confirmed that tourism to Jamaica …

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Obesity is a risk factor for the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) but mechanisms mediating this association are unknown. While obesity is known to impair systemic blood vessel function, and predisposes to systemic vascular diseases, its effects on the pulmonary circulation are largely unknown. We hypothesized that the chronic low grade inflammation of obesity impairs pulmonary vascular homeostasis and primes the lung for acute injury. The lung endothelium from obese mice expressed higher levels of leukocyte adhesion markers and lower levels of cell-cell junctional proteins when compared to lean mice. We tested whether systemic factors are responsible for …

Behavioral And Cognitive Changes After Early Postnatal Lesions Of The Rat Mediodorsal Thalamus, Zakaria Ouhaz, Saadua B-M'Hamed, Anna S. Mitchell, Abdeslem Elidrissi, Mohamed Bennis
Publications and Research
Early insults to the thalamus result in functional and/or structural abnormalities in the cerebral cortex. However, differences in behavioral and cognitive changes after early insult are not well characterized. The present study assessed whether early postnatal damage to mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus (MD), reciprocally interconnected with the prefrontal cortex, causes behavioral and cognitive alterations in young adult rats. Rat pups at postnatal day 4 received bilateral electrolytic lesion of MD, or aMD Sham lesion or were anesthetized controls; on recovery they were returned to their mothers until weaning. Seven weeks later, all rats were tested with the following behavioral …
Clonal Integration And Ramet Development In Quaking Aspen, Anson Call, Dr. Samuel St. Clair
Clonal Integration And Ramet Development In Quaking Aspen, Anson Call, Dr. Samuel St. Clair
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Clonal plants are important contributors to natural environments and can have disproportionate effects on ecosystem function. In the mountain west, the clonal species Populus tremuloides (quaking aspen) is critical in helping to regulate ecosystem function; healthy aspen stands support a diverse group of plants and animals. Aspen are in decline across the west, due to climate change (increased drought), changing fire cycles, and increasing pressure from herbivores like deer and elk. Understanding the natural processes that enable aspen to survive and grow will help us protect aspen in the future. Clonality, or the ability to reproduce asexually through root suckering, …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Jewel Beetles (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) contain ~15,000 of the most stunning yet least understood species in the animal kingdom (Fig. 1; Bellamy and Nelson, 2002). Although it is the 8th largest beetle family and contains many species of biological interest and economic importance, the family is poorly studied. To date, only one molecular phylogeny has been published for the family, and the six subfamilial classifications are still in flux (Evans et al. 2014). Of particular interest within the family Buprestidae is the Emerald Ash Borer; (EAB; Agrilus planipennis) a destructive pest of great economic importance (Fairmare). The EAB was …

Slep-Tone Entertainment Corporation v. Canton Phoenix Incorporated
On Appeal from the United States District Court for the District of Oregon 3:14-cv-00764-PK Honorable J. Mosman
From the Summary of Argument
The District Court correctly determined that Slep-Tone’s trademark infringement and unfair competition claims are barred by Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., 539 U.S. 23 (2003).
Slep-Tone’s fundamental complaint is about unauthorized use of its intangible content—karaoke tracks. Under Dastar, however, only confusion regarding the source of physical goods is actionable under the Lanham Act; confusion regarding the source of the karaoke tracks or their authorization …

Les Rues Des Tableaux. Géographie Du Marché De L'Art Parisien (1815-1955), Léa Saint-Raymond, Félicie De Maupeou, Julien Cavero
Artl@s Bulletin
Continuation of a first socioeconomic analysis of the "art dealers" in Paris between 1815 and 1955 (Artl@s Bulletin 2, no. 2), this paper presents the results of a spatial study of the Parisian art market at that time. Departing from serial geographical data given by a homogeneous source, the Bottin du commerce, we mapped a 140 years spatial evolution of the "art dealers", using a geocoding system with composite locators. The article exposes the spatial dynamics of this market and studies them in a multi-scalar way, making the connection between the global evolution of the Parisian economy and …

Provincializing Paris. The Center-Periphery Narrative Of Modern Art In Light Of Quantitative And Transnational Approaches, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
The alternative “centre‐periphery” is essential to the myth of modern art and its historiography. Even though Postcolonial studies have denounced the implications of such geopolitical hierarchies, as long as our objects remain centred on one capital city and within national boundaries, it will be difficult to escape the hierarchical paradigm that makes Paris and New York the successive capital cities of Modernism. This paper highlights how approaches focusing on different scales of analysis—from the quantitative and geographic to the monographic—challenge the supposed centrality of Paris through 1945.

Wired! And Visualizing Venice: Scaling Up Digital Art History, Kristin Huffman Lanzoni, Mark James-Vrooman Olson, Victoria E. Szabo
Artl@s Bulletin
This article focuses on Visualizing Venice, an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural collaboration that engages in mapping, 3-D modeling, and multimedia representations of historical change in Venice, Italy. Through a “laboratory” approach that integrates students and faculty in multi-year research teams, we ask new questions and pursue emerging lines of inquiry about architectural monuments, their relation to the larger urban setting, and the role of sculptural and painted decoration in sacred spaces. Our practice of digital art history transforms both teaching and research and provides new means for communicating knowledge to a broad public.

Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly
Artl@s Bulletin
This article discusses how the usual study of architecture from the perspective of a single moment in time, usually the moment of its creation is limiting. New methodologies make it possible to add to the current rich variety of approaches available to the architectural historian in order to consider the dynamic history of the forms we study. This problem can be resolved in part through the use of digital tools, in particular Neatline, (www.neatline.org) which allows the viewer to see and understand how a building changes over time.

Sustainable Design Strategies For Sport Stadia, Ileana Aquino, Nawari O. Nawari
Suburban Sustainability
The need to establish a more sustainable design for everyday items and for people to live a more sustainably led lifestyle is evident around the world. As office and residential building, schools, and infrastructure become more sustainably built, there is no doubt that other fields will soon follow. The sporting domain needs to be the next step in sustainable design. Sport stadia can and will play a vital role in increasing sustainability awareness across the world. There is an enormous opportunity to have stadia serve as trendsetters in innovative thinking for sustainable design.
This research shows that there are numerous …

Facilitation And Dominance In A Schooling Predator: Foraging Behavior Of Florida Pompano, Trachinotus Carolinus, Meagan N. Schrandt, Sean P. Powers
University Faculty and Staff Publications
Presumably an individual’s risk of predation is reduced by group membership and this ‘safety in numbers’ concept has been readily applied to investigations of schooling prey; however, foraging in groups may also be beneficial. We tested the hypothesis that, when feeding in groups, foraging of a coastal fish (Florida Pompano, Trachinotus carolinus) on a benthic prey source would be facilitated (i.e. fish feeding in groups will consume more prey items). Although this question has been addressed for other fish species, it has not been previously addressed for Florida Pompano, a fish known to exhibit schooling behavior and that is …

Innovations in Managing Western Water: New Approaches for Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Outcomes (Martz Summer Conference, June 11-12)
Many aspects of western water allocation and management are the product of independent and uncoordinated actions, several occurring a century or more ago. However, in this modern era of water scarcity, it is increasingly acknowledged that more coordinated and deliberate decision-making is necessary for effectively balancing environmental, social, and economic objectives. In recent years, a variety of forums, processes, and tools have emerged to better manage the connections between regions, sectors, and publics linked by shared water systems. In this event, we explore the cutting edge efforts, the latest points of contention, and the opportunities for further progress.
