Sustainable Design In Ghana, Anthony Decosta, Amanda Laufer, Theresa Mcardle Jun 2015

Sustainable Design In Ghana, Anthony Decosta, Amanda Laufer, Theresa Mcardle

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

Sustainable homes are difficult for the people of Gambibgo, Ghana to build, as there are few natural building materials in the area other than earth and water, and their subsistencefarming lifestyle leaves very little money for the purchase of sourced material like lumber, steel, or cement. Traditional homes in Gambibgo are constantly rebuilt, costing the communityaround $250 at least once every five years. Our team, with Father James Reites, S.J. and two alums, traveled to Gambibgo in March 2015 with an earthen roof design we had hoped to implement on the existing walls of thecommunity's homes. Upon our arrival we …

Geomorphic Restoration And Stabilization Of A Reach Of Stevens Creek, Gretchen Kayser, Nick Roby, Travis Giffen

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

This project focuses on the restoration of a 460-foot reach of Stevens Creek in Santa Clara County, California. The new design will increase the stability of stream channels, riparian system functions, and fish passage while improving or maintaining the "level of service" based on geomorphic data. This project was completed in conjunction with the Santa Clara Valley Water District's standards and design criteria. The proposed design is needed to increase the stability of stream banks and rectify stream bed incision. This will, in turn, provide greater flood protection to the residents of Santa Clara County. In addition to safety for …

"A Year Of Life After River Stewards", Allie Rakowski

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

It's been one year since graduating from the University of Dayton with a BS in Biology and SEE, minor. When friends and family ask me what I've been doing or what I've done since graduation I usually give them the short version, "I've been taking a few seasonal jobs and applying to graduate school." While that is true, it nowhere near encompasses the experiences I've had, the people I've met, and the landscapes that I've seen. Right after graduation I took an internship with the Ohio EPA in their surface water division in Columbus. I specifically worked under the Wetland …

© 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Objective: Development of brown-like/beige adipocytes in white adipose tissue (WAT) helps to reduce obesity. Thus we investigated the effects of resveratrol, a dietary polyphenol capable of preventing obesity and related complications in humans and animal models, on brown-like adipocyte formation in inguinal WAT (iWAT). Methods: CD1 female mice (5-month old) were fed a high-fat diet with/without 0.1% resveratrol. In addition, primary stromal vascular cells separated from iWAT were subjected to resveratrol treatment. Markers of brown-like (beige) adipogenesis were measured and the involvement of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) α1 was assessed using conditional …

Factors Influencing Asiatic Oak Weevil Interactions With Native Ecosystem Engineers Over Time, Daniel Rothschild O'Brien Jun 2015

Factors Influencing Asiatic Oak Weevil Interactions With Native Ecosystem Engineers Over Time, Daniel Rothschild O'Brien

Theses

I sought to build a model to predict current and future abundance of Asiatic oak weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cyrtepistomus castaneus) by using the relative abundance of leaf tying and leaf rolling caterpillars. The Asiatic oak weevil is an exotic species that has been observed inside leaf ties and leaf rolls made by native Lepidoptera caterpillars. Chapter one is a review of the known relationships between animal constructs and exotic species. Within this review I transition from natural structures, to animal architects, and to ecosystem engineers and how they have a population dynamic impact on the invasive species. I also discuss …

Minimizing Average Handling Time In Contact Centers By Introducing A New Process: Rowan Support Desk Case Study, Niusha Jafari

Theses and Dissertations

Quality of a call center performance is an important factor in insuring customer satisfaction. Customers, the "callers", want their requests solved quickly, permanently and to their satisfaction. Often, there are staff constraints, budget or cost limitation, and the Service Level Agreement (SLA) which is resource availability to accomplish a task within a deadline. The purpose of this research is to analyze feasible approaches to minimize the long-lasting open requests and enhance a call center's performance. Multiple challenges that a call center often faces in handling requests are studied to identify key bottlenecks in the process of handling requests. Rowan University …

Specific Intensity Direct Current (Dc) Electric Field Improves Neural Stem Cell Migration And Enhances Differentiation Towards Βiii-Tubulin+ Neurons, Huiping Zhao, Amanda Steiger, Mitch Nohner, Hui Ye Jun 2015

Specific Intensity Direct Current (Dc) Electric Field Improves Neural Stem Cell Migration And Enhances Differentiation Towards Βiii-Tubulin+ Neurons, Huiping Zhao, Amanda Steiger, Mitch Nohner, Hui Ye

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Control of stem cell migration and differentiation is vital for efficient stem cell therapy. Literature reporting electric field–guided migration and differentiation is emerging. However, it is unknown if a field that causes cell migration is also capable of guiding cell differentiation— and the mechanisms for these processes remain unclear. Here, we report that a 115 V/m direct current (DC) electric field can induce directional migration of neural precursor cells (NPCs). Whole cell patching revealed that the cell membrane depolarized in the electric field, and buffering of extracellular calcium via EGTA prevented cell migration under these conditions. Immunocytochemical staining indicated that …

Beyond A Bottle Of Liquid: Pesticide Dependence In Transitional Rural China, Z Hu, S Rahman Jun 2015

Beyond A Bottle Of Liquid: Pesticide Dependence In Transitional Rural China, Z Hu, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Pesticide dependence is a major threat to food safety and local environment. Although numerous studies have explored different causes of pesticide dependence, few have examined how pesticides are locked into agricultural modernisation and rural transformation. Based on a case study of a Chinese village, this paper demonstrates how agricultural modernisation trajectory and rural changes have perpetuated the use of pesticides as necessities in agriculture as well as for farmers' livelihoods. Modern technologies, such as hybrid rice, conservation tillage, changes in crop structure, and reduction of intercropping all contribute highly towards pesticide dependence. The household responsibility system in China has provided …

House Of Cards: How Rediscovering Republicanism Brings It Crashing Down, Jonathan E. Maddison Jun 2015

House Of Cards: How Rediscovering Republicanism Brings It Crashing Down, Jonathan E. Maddison

Catholic University Law Review

Using Frank Underwood’s maniacal political journey in the Netflix series House of Cards as an example of what is wrong with American politics, this article argues that the Supreme Court’s misapplication of First Amendment principles in Citizens United and other key campaign finance cases plays a large and problematic role. Providing an extensive historical overview of republicanism and First Amendment jurisprudence, this article suggests that a return to republican ideals, while not perfect, is both the solution and proper tool of analysis to be used by the Supreme Court for campaign finance cases and beyond.

Osteological Variation Among Extreme Morphological Forms In The Mexican Salamander Genus Chiropterotriton (Amphibia: Plethodontidae): Morphological Evolution And Homoplasy, David M. Darda, David B. Wake Jun 2015

Osteological Variation Among Extreme Morphological Forms In The Mexican Salamander Genus Chiropterotriton (Amphibia: Plethodontidae): Morphological Evolution And Homoplasy, David M. Darda, David B. Wake

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Osteological variation is recorded among and within four of the most distinctive species of the Mexican salamander genus Chiropterotriton. Analysis of the data is consistent with the monophyletic status of the genus and documents previously unrecorded intraspecific and interspecific variation. Most of the recorded variation involves qualitative and quantitative proportional differences, but four fixed differences constitute autapomorphic states that affirm and diagnose some species (C. dimidiatus, C. magnipes). Osteological variation in 15 characters is analyzed with respect to predictions generated from four hypotheses: 1) phylogeny, 2) adaptation to specific habitats (the four species include …

New Insights Into The Evolution Of The Human Diet From Faecal Biomarker Analysis In Wild Chimpanzee And Gorilla Faeces, Ainara Sistiaga, Richard Wrangham, Jessica M. Rothman, Roger E. Summons Jun 2015

New Insights Into The Evolution Of The Human Diet From Faecal Biomarker Analysis In Wild Chimpanzee And Gorilla Faeces, Ainara Sistiaga, Richard Wrangham, Jessica M. Rothman, Roger E. Summons

Publications and Research

Our understanding of early human diets is based on reconstructed biomechanics of hominin jaws, bone and teeth isotopic data, tooth wear patterns, lithic, taphonomic and zooarchaeological data, which do not provide information about the relative amounts of different types of foods that contributed most to early human diets. Faecal biomarkers are proving to be a valuable tool in identifying relative proportions of plant and animal tissues in Palaeolithic diets. A limiting factor in the application of the faecal biomarker approach is the striking absence of data related to the occurrence of faecal biomarkers in non-human primate faeces. In this study …

Suitable Days For Plant Growth Disappear Under Projected Climate Change: Potential Human And Biotic Vulnerability, Camilo Mora, Iain R. Caldwell, Jamie M. Caldwell, Micah R. Fisher, Brandon M. Genco, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Ongoing climate change can alter conditions for plant growth, in turn affecting ecological and social systems. While there have been considerable advances in understanding the physical aspects of climate change, comprehensive analyses integrating climate, biological, and social sciences are less common. Here we use climate projections under alternative mitigation scenarios to show how changes in environmental variables that limit plant growth could impact ecosystems and people. We show that although the global mean number of days above freezing will increase by up to 7% by 2100 under “business as usual” (representative concentration pathway [RCP] 8.5), suitable growing days will actually …

Changing Climates, Fading Cultures: A Study Of Place Annihilation As A Result Of Climate Change, Brooks A. Bolsinger Jun 2015

Changing Climates, Fading Cultures: A Study Of Place Annihilation As A Result Of Climate Change, Brooks A. Bolsinger

Honors Projects

Abstract

Research has established the phenomenon of cultural annihilation: the notion that the members of cultures can perceive a sense of loss when the geography upon which their culture is built undergoes a dramatic destructive change. This review examines prevailing literature to uncover existing and expected ways that climate change will impact cultures, specifically damaging the shared history that is infused into the geographic traits that make up a culture’s homeland. It examines three case studies - Native American tribes in Alaska, the island nation of the Maldives, and the country of the Netherlands – to highlight vulnerabilities that these …

Apoε2 And Education In Cognitively Normal Older Subjects With High Levels Of Ad Pathology At Autopsy: Findings From The Nun Study, Diego Iacono, Peter Zandi, Myron Gross, William R. Markesbery, Olga Pletnikova, Gay Rudow, Juan C. Troncoso Jun 2015

Apoε2 And Education In Cognitively Normal Older Subjects With High Levels Of Ad Pathology At Autopsy: Findings From The Nun Study, Diego Iacono, Peter Zandi, Myron Gross, William R. Markesbery, Olga Pletnikova, Gay Rudow, Juan C. Troncoso

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Asymptomatic Alzheimer's disease (ASYMAD) subjects are individuals characterized by preserved cognition before death despite substantial AD pathology at autopsy. ASYMAD subjects show comparable levels of AD pathology, i.e. β-amyloid neuritic plaques (Aβ-NP) and tau-neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), to those observed in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and some definite AD cases. Previous clinicopathologic studies on ASYMAD subjects have shown specific phenomena of hypertrophy in the cell bodies, nuclei, and nucleoli of hippocampal pyramidal neurons and other cerebral areas. Since it is well established that the allele APOε4 is a major genetic risk factor for AD, we examined whether specific alleles of APOE …

Transcriptome Sequencing And Annotation Of The Polychaete Hermodice Carunculata (Annelida, Amphinomidae), Shaadi Mehr, Aida Verdes, Rob Desalle, John S. Sparks, Vincent A. Pieribone, David F. Gruber Jun 2015

Transcriptome Sequencing And Annotation Of The Polychaete Hermodice Carunculata (Annelida, Amphinomidae), Shaadi Mehr, Aida Verdes, Rob Desalle, John S. Sparks, Vincent A. Pieribone, David F. Gruber

Publications and Research

Background: The amphinomid polychaete Hermodice carunculata is a cosmopolitan and ecologically important omnivore in coral reef ecosystems, preying on a diverse suite of reef organisms and potentially acting as a vector for coral disease. While amphinomids are a key group for determining the root of the Annelida, their phylogenetic position has been difficult to resolve, and their publically available genomic data was scarce.

Results: We performed deep transcriptome sequencing (Illumina HiSeq) and profiling on Hermodice carunculata collected in the Western Atlantic Ocean. We focused this study on 58,454 predicted Open Reading Frames (ORFs) of genes longer than 200 amino acids …

Akt Inhibition Overcomes Rapamycin Resistance By Enhancing The Repressive Function Of Pras40 On Mtorc1/4e-Bp1 Axis, Wenting Mi, Qing Ye, Side Liu, Qing-Bai She Jun 2015

Akt Inhibition Overcomes Rapamycin Resistance By Enhancing The Repressive Function Of Pras40 On Mtorc1/4e-Bp1 Axis, Wenting Mi, Qing Ye, Side Liu, Qing-Bai She

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The mTORC1 inhibitors, rapamycin and its analogs, are known to show only modest antitumor activity in clinic, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Here, we found that activated AKT signaling is associated with rapamycin resistance in breast and colon cancers by sustained phosphorylation of the translational repressor 4E-BP1. Treatment of tumor cells with rapamycin or the AKT inhibitor MK2206 showed a limited activity in inhibiting 4E-BP1 phosphorylation, cap-dependent translation, cell growth and motility. However, treatment with both drugs resulted in profound effects in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistic investigation demonstrated that the combination treatment was required to effectively …
