Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will have an indolent and curable disease, whereas approximately 15% of these patients will rapidly progress to a castrate-resistant and metastatic stage with high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, the identification of molecular signature(s) that detect men at risk of progressing disease remains a pressing and still unmet need for these patients. Here, we used an integrated discovery platform combining prostate cancer cell lines, a Transgenic Adenocarcinoma of the Mouse Prostate (TRAMP) model and clinically-annotated human tissue samples to identify loss of expression of microRNA-34b as consistently associated with prostate cancer relapse. Mechanistically, this was …

The ability to imitate complex sounds is rare, and among birds has been found only in parrots, songbirds, and hummingbirds. Parrots exhibit the most advanced vocal mimicry among non-human animals. A few studies have noted differences in connectivity, brain position and shape in the vocal learning systems of parrots relative to songbirds and hummingbirds. However, only one parrot species, the budgerigar, has been examined and no differences in the presence of song system structures were found with other avian vocal learners. Motivated by questions of whether there are important differences in the vocal systems of parrots relative to other vocal …

Making A Case For Mark Twain’S A Horse’S Tale: Twain’S Use Of Templates And Myths As His Highest Moralism, Sara Guggisberg, Dr. Frank Christianson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Most of Mark Twain’s novels, full of sharp wit and relevant social commentary, suggest his strong ability to read people and create characters that endure through decades, while still concealing his own opinion on society beneath layers of sardonic criticism or feigned admiration. But A Horse’s Tale—an odd little novel about an orphan girl, her favorite horse named Soldier Boy (a gift from Buffalo Bill), and the bloody murder of both at the horns of a tortured bull—does not fit Twain’s typical formula. At first glance, this novel is full of earnest superlatives rendered trite, an uneven narrative arc, …

Amiens Cathedral: City Of God, Dennis West, Dr. Seth Holladay

Journal of Undergraduate Research

What was it like to visit a gothic cathedral in the thirteenth century? That is the question that is explored in Amiens Cathedral: City of God. The purpose of this project was to illustrate the experience a medieval citizen of Amiens would have had upon visiting the Cathedral of Amiens. This was accomplished through researching dimensions and original construction of the cathedral, and illustrating how the stained glass and other art accentuates the sermons presented.

Annotation Of The Protein Coding Regions Of The Equine Genome, Matthew S. Hestand, Theodore S. Kalbfleisch, Stephen J. Coleman, Zheng Zeng, Jinze Liu, Ludovic Orlando, James N. Macleod

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Current gene annotation of the horse genome is largely derived from in silico predictions and cross-species alignments. Only a small number of genes are annotated based on equine EST and mRNA sequences. To expand the number of equine genes annotated from equine experimental evidence, we sequenced mRNA from a pool of forty-three different tissues. From these, we derived the structures of 68,594 transcripts. In addition, we identified 301,829 positions with SNPs or small indels within these transcripts relative to EquCab2. Interestingly, 780 variants extend the open reading frame of the transcript and appear to be small errors in the equine …

Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

TLR2 promotes NLRP3 inflammasome activation via an early MyD88-IRAK1-dependent pathway that provides a priming signal (signal 1) necessary for activation of the inflammasome by a second potassium-depleting signal (signal 2). Here we show that TLR3 binding to dsRNA promotes post-translational inflammasome activation through intermediate and late TRIF/RIPK1/FADD-dependent pathways. Both pathways require the scaffolding but not the catalytic function of caspase-8 or RIPK1. Only the late pathway requires kinase competent RIPK3 and MLKL function. Mechanistically, FADD/caspase-8 scaffolding function provides a post-translational signal 1 in the intermediate pathway, whereas in the late pathway it helps the oligomerization of RIPK3, which together with …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Abuse, Anger And Violent Behavior Among A Sample Of Sex Offenders, Stephanie R. Ramirez, Elizabeth L. Jeglic, Cynthia Calkins Jun 2015

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Childhood Abuse, Anger And Violent Behavior Among A Sample Of Sex Offenders, Stephanie R. Ramirez, Elizabeth L. Jeglic, Cynthia Calkins

Publications and Research

Background: Increasing attention has focused on the emotional dysregulation that can result from adverse childhood experiences among those who commit sexually violent crimes. While studies confirm a relationship between child maltreatment and anger the research is limited and it is unclear how anger and child maltreatment effect the use of violence during the commission of the sex crime.

Methods: This study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment, anger and violent behavior by reviewing the records of 571 adult male offenders convicted of sexual assault or child molestation. The aims of the present study were to 1) examine differences in anger …

Comparison Of The Equine Reference Sequence With Its Sanger Source Data And New Illumina Reads, Jovan Rebolledo-Mendez, Matthew S. Hestand, Stephen J. Coleman, Zheng Zeng, Ludovic Orlando, James N. Macleod, Ted Kalbfleisch

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

The reference assembly for the domestic horse, EquCab2, published in 2009, was built using approximately 30 million Sanger reads from a Thoroughbred mare named Twilight. Contiguity in the assembly was facilitated using nearly 315 thousand BAC end sequences from Twilight's half brother Bravo. Since then, it has served as the foundation for many genome-wide analyses that include not only the modern horse, but ancient horses and other equid species as well. As data mapped to this reference has accumulated, consistent variation between mapped datasets and the reference, in terms of regions with no read coverage, single nucleotide variants, and small …

Fault Detection And Diagnostics Of An Hvac Sub-System Using Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Networks, Christian Birk Jones Jun 2015

Fault Detection And Diagnostics Of An Hvac Sub-System Using Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Networks, Christian Birk Jones

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The commercial building sector consumed about 20% of the total primary energy in the U.S. in 2008. A significant yet avoidable portion of the energy consumption is due to inefficient system operations. The inefficiencies can be attributed to degrading HVAC sub-systems, and undetected abnormal conditions. Recognition and remediation of these conditions through advanced data analytics can reduce energy consumption by 5% to 20%. This could save about $9 billion in utility costs in the U.S. alone. Modern buildings are constantly sending messages in the form of sensor data. However, this data is only as good as the system that collects …

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar Jun 2015

Three-Dimensional Imaging Using A Novel Rotating Point Spread Function Imager, Rakesh Kumar

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

The capability to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging in a single snapshot is a highly coveted goal for the imaging community. To be able to extend the depth-of-field while simultaneously encoding depth in the point spread function (PSF) itself allows an imaging solution which is less time consuming and less data intensive than the inefficient multiscan based conventional 3D imaging. Light-field cameras also achieve 3D imaging in a snapshot, but at the cost of greatly reduced resolution. Phase mask based depth encoding solutions have been proposed by other groups, but they all suffer from a relatively smaller depth-of-field. Recently there has …

Judge Jack Weinstein And The World Of Tort: Institutional And Historical Perspectives, Robert L. Rabin Jun 2015

Judge Jack Weinstein And The World Of Tort: Institutional And Historical Perspectives, Robert L. Rabin

DePaul Law Review

In this Article, I offer four representative illustrations of Judge Jack Weinstein’s creative efforts to recast traditional tort concepts in a fashion responsive, by his lights, to accident law claims that pressed against the boundaries of the conventional interpersonal tort law process. In the first of these cases, dealing with a cluster of blasting cap injuries to minors, Judge Weinstein addressed the puzzle of the indeterminate defendant. In the second, war veterans’ claims from Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam, he wrestled with indeterminacy of both defendants and plaintiffs. In the third, the handgun cases, the mass claims dimension so evident …

Judge Jack Weinstein And The Construction Of Tort Law In America: An Intellectual History, James R. Hackney, Jr. Jun 2015

Judge Jack Weinstein And The Construction Of Tort Law In America: An Intellectual History, James R. Hackney, Jr.

DePaul Law Review

This Article explores the intersection between the judicial and scholarly work of Judge Jack Weinstein, particularly as related to mass tort litigation and the development of legal theory and tort law in America. The primary focus will be on Judge Weinstein’s handing of the Agent Orange litigation. Judge Weinstein’s tenure on the federal bench began in 1967. Some seven years earlier, Ronald Coase published his Problem of Social Costs, a monumental moment in American legal theory and tort law policy. Three years later, Guido Calabresi published his path-breaking text, The Costs of Accidents. These two texts are representative …

Judging Responsibility, Responsible Judging, John C.P. Goldberg Jun 2015

Judging Responsibility, Responsible Judging, John C.P. Goldberg

DePaul Law Review

This Article sketches two ways in which Judge Weinstein’s judicial performance raises issues of responsibility. First, it considers how he has deployed responsibility concepts that are central to tort law. Unsurprisingly, it concludes that, in his efforts to do “equity” through mass tort litigation, he has stretched these concepts quite far. This conclusion raises a second set of questions about responsibility—namely, questions about the role responsibilities of federal district court judges. As to these, the Article contends that Judge Weinstein’s tort decisions are consistent with a familiar and plausible account of judicial decision-making. It also notes ways in which he …

Empathy And Article Iii: Judge Weinstein, Cases And Controversies, Susan A. Bandes Jun 2015

Empathy And Article Iii: Judge Weinstein, Cases And Controversies, Susan A. Bandes

DePaul Law Review

The question of whether judges ought to be empathetic has been hotly debated in recent years. This Issue celebrating the life and achievements of Judge Jack Weinstein presents an ideal opportunity to productively focus and narrow the empathy debate. Problematically, this debate generally treats judging as a monolithic concept. To debate whether empathy is a desirable attribute of judges as a general matter is to overlook important distinctions between trial, appellate, and Supreme Court jurists, and between federal and state courts. Using Judge Weinstein’s approach to judging as a touchstone, I will explore the role of empathy for Article III …

Seasonal Dynamics And Micro-Climatic Preference Of Two Alpine Endemic Hypogean Beetles, Stefano Mammola, Elena Piano, Pier Mauro Giachino, Marco Isaia Jun 2015

Seasonal Dynamics And Micro-Climatic Preference Of Two Alpine Endemic Hypogean Beetles, Stefano Mammola, Elena Piano, Pier Mauro Giachino, Marco Isaia

International Journal of Speleology

Hypogean beetles generally live in stable environments, characterized by constant temperature and high relative humidity. Changes in the underground microclimatic conditions generally induce local migrations of the beetles through the hypogean environment in search of suitable microhabitats. We studied the seasonal dynamics and the micro-climatic preference of two Alpine endemic hypogean beetles - Sphodropsis ghilianii (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and Dellabeffaella roccae (Coleoptera, Cholevidae) - in the hypogean complex of Pugnetto (Graian Alps, Italy). We surveyed the two species for one year, using baited pitfall traps and measuring temperature and humidity along the two main caves. We used logistic regression mixed models …

Is The Quest For Corporate Responsibility A Wild Goose Chase? The Story Of Lovenheim V. Iroquois Brands, Ltd., D.A. Jeremy Telman

Akron Law Review

This Article is a Law Story. Law Stories have many purposes, but their main goal is to supplement and demystify the case method of legal pedagogy. The case method has been criticized for presenting students with the law more or less as a fait accompli. The case method assumes a pre-existing body of law that students passively learn rather than learning to think of the law as something that they will have a hand in shaping...In Part II, this Article explores the law of shareholder proposals and the reasons why the SEC and the courts permit proposals relating to social …

Text To Screen Adaptation: Examining Reverse Ekphrasis In Joe Wright’S Films Adapting For, Hannah Dhue Jun 2015

Text To Screen Adaptation: Examining Reverse Ekphrasis In Joe Wright’S Films Adapting For, Hannah Dhue

CrissCross

Adapting for the screen is an arduous task – one that never seems to fulfill readers’ expectations. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman expertly illustrated this phenomenon with his award-winning script, Adaptation (2002). In the film, Nicholas Cage plays both Charlie, a scatterbrained but devoted screenwriter, and Donald, Charlie’s laid-back twin. Charged with adapting Susan Orlean’s The Orchid Thief, Charlie lets his fear of failing to meet his audience’s expectations turn his work into a nightmarish, insurmountable task. When Charlie’s boss suggests that he make the book’s two main characters fall in love in the film version, he challenges the deviation from the …

Random Sampling Of Skewed Distributions Implies Taylor’S Power Law Of Fluctuation Scaling, Joel E. Cohen, Meng Xu Jun 2015

Random Sampling Of Skewed Distributions Implies Taylor’S Power Law Of Fluctuation Scaling, Joel E. Cohen, Meng Xu

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Taylor’s law (TL), a widely verified quantitative pattern in ecology and other sciences, describes the variance in a species’ population density (or other nonnegative quantity) as a power-law function of the mean density (or other nonnegative quantity): Approximately, variance = a(mean)b, a > 0. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain and interpret TL. Here, we show analytically that observations randomly sampled in blocks from any skewed frequency distribution with four finite moments give rise to TL. We do not claim this is the only way TL arises. We give approximate formulae for the TL parameters and their …
