Erin: A Portal To Resources For Higher Education In Neuroscience, Richard F. Olivo, Joseph R. Burdo, Robert Calin-Jagemen, William Grisham, Monica L. Linden, Robert L. Rosenberg, Laura L. Symonds, Janice E. Thornton

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

ERIN, Educational Resources in Neuroscience, is the Society for Neuroscience's web portal to selected, high- quality materials for higher education. A Board of Editors approves resources after describing them and classifying them by topic, subtopic, media type, author, and appropriate educational level. Some resources are also accompanied by reviews and ratings from faculty who have used the resource. These features make a search of ERIN far more useful than a typical Google search.

ERIN's development was funded by the National Science Foundation with a three-year grant to SfN. Along the way, various unexpected problems arose and solutions were found, many …

Integrating Literacy And Engineering Instruction For Young Learners, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Stacie Gregory Jul 2015

Integrating Literacy And Engineering Instruction For Young Learners, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Stacie Gregory

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

According to recently published national standards, elementary students should engage in engineering design activities. This article outlines ways that teachers can use literacy instruction to support young students’ engineering design activity, such as by selecting texts in which characters face problems that can be solved through engineering, providing students with opportunities to practice comprehension strategies while reading those texts, and modeling for them how to write a variety of texts that are relevant to engineers’ practices. The authors describe how they integrated this type of literacy instruction into engineering units in third- and fifth-grade classrooms.

"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister Jul 2015

"We Know Where We Stand": Contesting And Constructing Knowledge In Nicaragua's Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemic, Sarah Leister

Latin American Studies ETDs

Sugarcane workers in northwestern Nicaragua are suffering from chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes (CKDnt) at extremely high rates. In the small town of Chichigalpa alone, CKDnt causes 46% of male deaths (Kurzrok et al. 2013). This paper examines the CKD epidemic as a fundamentally structural problem, not merely a biological abnormality, because it is closely linked to labor exploitation, poverty, human rights violations, and historical context. Grounded in literature from medical anthropology and medical sociology and based on two months of ethnographic field research in northwestern Nicaragua, it analyzes how knowledge production interacts with scientific uncertainty about CKDs specific …

The Dangerous Right To Food Choice, Samuel R. Wiseman Jul 2015

The Dangerous Right To Food Choice, Samuel R. Wiseman

Scholarly Publications

Scholars, advocates, and interest groups have grown increasingly concerned with the ways in which government regulations—from agricultural subsidies to food safety regulations to licensing restrictions on food trucks—affect access to local food. One argument emerging from the interest in recent years is that choosing what foods to eat, what I have previously called “liberty of palate,” is a fundamental right.1 The attraction is obvious: infringements of fundamental rights trigger strict scrutiny, which few statutes survive. As argued elsewhere, the doctrinal case for the existence of such a right is very weak. This Essay does not revisit those arguments, but instead …

Nanoformulation For Anticancer Drug Delivery: Enhanced Pharmacokinetics And Circulation, Gaurav Parekh Jul 2015

Nanoformulation For Anticancer Drug Delivery: Enhanced Pharmacokinetics And Circulation, Gaurav Parekh

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we have explored the application of the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly technique for improving injectable drug delivery systems of low soluble anticancer drugs (e.g. Camptothecin (CPT), Paclitaxel (PTX) or Doxorubicin (DOX)). For this study, a polyelectrolyte shell encapsulates different types of drug nanocores (e.g. soft core, nanomicelle or solid lipid nanocores). The low soluble drugs tend to crystallize and precipitate in an aqueous medium. This is the reason they cannot be injected and may have low concentrations and low circulation time in the blood. Even though these drugs when present in the cancer microenvironment have high anti-tumor inhibition, the …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2015-07-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Toward A Relational Humanism, Kenneth J. Gergen Jul 2015

Toward A Relational Humanism, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

Humanist conceptions of the person evolve across history. Whereas humanism has served a pivotal role in the caregiving professions, its individualist emphasis now stands as an impediment to its future. Proposed is a relational reconceptualization of the person, placing relational as opposed to individual well-being at the forefront of humanists' concerns.

Where it is useful, data from these other surveys has been included for comparison.

Marriage-Based Immigration For Same-Sex Couples After Doma: Lingering Problems Of Proof And Prejudice, Anna Carron Jul 2015

Marriage-Based Immigration For Same-Sex Couples After Doma: Lingering Problems Of Proof And Prejudice, Anna Carron

Northwestern University Law Review

In 2013, the Supreme Court changed the lives of thousands of same-sex couples in America by declaring the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional in United States v. Windsor. This decision allowed same-sex spouses to receive the same marriage-based immigration benefits under federal law that “traditional marriages” had long received. Although this holding is a victory for binational same-sex couples, bias still exists in the practices U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) uses to evaluate the legitimacy of marriages. This bias manifests itself in the proof USCIS requires to show a relationship is bona fide, proof that often assumes …

All-Weather Surfaces For Cattle Watering Facilities, Stephen F. Higgins, Kylie Schmidt, Donald J. Stamper, Kevin Laurent Jul 2015

All-Weather Surfaces For Cattle Watering Facilities, Stephen F. Higgins, Kylie Schmidt, Donald J. Stamper, Kevin Laurent

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

A livestock watering area includes a watering facility and the heavy-use-area (HUA) surrounding it. Without protection, the HUA can develop surface depressions. Surface depressions can render the watering facility inaccessible and no longer frost-proof. Surface depressions also collect rainwater and excrement, creating mud and conditions adverse to livestock health (Figure 1).

Slaframine Toxicosis Or “Slobbers” In Cattle And Horses, Michelle Arnold, S. Ray Smith Jul 2015

Slaframine Toxicosis Or “Slobbers” In Cattle And Horses, Michelle Arnold, S. Ray Smith

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

An exceptionally wet summer weather pattern favors the growth of fungi on plants in the field and increases the risk for production of mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are naturally occurring compounds, some of which are toxic to cattle and horses, produced by fungi invading plant material. In the late 1940s and through the 1950s, beef and dairy producers and horse owners reported outbreaks of excessive salivation (slobbering) in cattle and horses associated with the consumption of second-cutting red clover (Trifolium pratense) and occasionally other legumes in the form of hay, pasture, or silage. It was not until the 1960s that …

Acute Or Atypical Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip), Michelle Arnold, Jeff Lehmkuhler Jul 2015

Acute Or Atypical Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip), Michelle Arnold, Jeff Lehmkuhler

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Acute or atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP) is terminology used by veterinary pathologists to describe a characteristic pattern of damage in the lungs of cattle. At necropsy, the first indication of AIP-affected lungs is they fill the thorax and do not collapse like normal lungs when the chest cavity is opened. On further investigation, the AIP lungs are found to be semi-firm with a rubbery texture; not hard and consolidated as occurs in bacterial bronchopneumonia. Large air bubbles are found between portions of the lung (see Figure 1, “interlobular” or “bullous” emphysema) and the cut surface of the lung may appear …

Staggers (Tremorgenic Syndrome), Michelle Arnold Jul 2015

Staggers (Tremorgenic Syndrome), Michelle Arnold

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

“Staggers” is an all-inclusive term for a group of nervous system disorders caused by indole-diterpenoid mycotoxins produced by various types of fungi on forages. These mycotoxins are collectively known as “tremorgens” (Table 1), and they may be found in several types of grasses at varying stages of maturity. The three main grass types associated with tremorgenic syndrome are Paspalum spp. (dallisgrass and bahiagrass), Cynodon dactylon (bermudagrass) and Lolium perenne (perennial ryegrass). Clinical signs are characterized by tremors and incoordination that tend to worsen with excitement or movement.

Lh-Independent Testosterone Secretion Is Mediated By The Interaction Between Gnrh2 And Its Receptor Within Porcine Testes, Amy T. Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Ginger A. Mills, J. Joe Ford, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Unlike classic gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GNRH1), the second mammalian isoform (GNRH2) is an ineffective stimulant of gonadotropin release. Species that produce GNRH2 may not maintain a functional GNRH2 receptor (GNRHR2) due to coding errors. A full-length GNRHR2 gene has been identified in swine, but its role in reproduction requires further elucidation. Our objective was to examine the role of GNRH2 and GNRHR2 in testicular function of boars. We discovered that GNRH2 levels were higher in the testis than in the anterior pituitary gland or hypothalamus, corresponding to greater GNRHR2 abundance in the testis versus the anterior pituitary gland. Moreover, GNRH2 …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Unresolved inflammation is a major contributor to the development of heart failure following myocardial infarction (MI). Pro-resolving lipid mediators, such as resolvins (e.g. RvD1), are biosynthesized endogenously. The role of RvD1 in resolving post-MI inflammation has not been elucidated due to its unstable nature. Here, we have tested the role for two forms of RvD1, after incorporation into liposomes (Lipo-RvD1) and its free acid form (RvD1) in the left ventricle (LV) and splenic remodeling post-MI. 8 to 12-week old male, C57BL/6J-mice were subjected to coronary artery ligation and Lipo-RvD1 or RvD1 (3μg/kg/day) was injected 3h post-MI for day (d)1 or …

Constructing The Imaginative Bridge: Third-Generation Holocaust Narratives, Megan Reynolds Jul 2015

Constructing The Imaginative Bridge: Third-Generation Holocaust Narratives, Megan Reynolds

Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Holocaust survivor and second-generation writers like Primo Levi, Elie Wiesel, and Art Speigelman struggle with Holocaust trauma throughout their writing. Their writing includes certain distinctive characteristics like the hesitancy to speak at all, the “deep sense of moral urgency” to share the truth, and the utter sorrow of acknowledging Holocaust suffering (Teichman and Leder 4). While some survivors wrote to preserve the truth about the Shoah, others believe that the “most appropriate response…is silence” (Teichman and Leder 1). Words fall short, inadequately describe the horrors survivors faced, and seem to almost distort the truth about the Holocaust itself. Survivor silence …

Changes In Serum Strongylus Vulgaris-Specific Antibody Concentrations In Response To Anthelmintic Treatment Of Experimentally Infected Foals, Martin Krarup Nielsen, Jessica Scare, Holli Sullivan Gravatte, Jennifer Lynn Bellaw, Julio C. Prado, Craig Robert Reinemeyer

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Strongylus vulgaris is the most pathogenic nematode parasite of horses. Its extensive migration in the mesenteric blood vessels can lead to life-threatening intestinal infarctions. Recent work has shown that this parasite is still identified among managed horse populations. A serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been developed for the detection of migrating larvae of S. vulgaris. Previous work has documented an increase in ELISA values following larvicidal treatment with ivermectin and suggested that the target parasite antigen is primarily produced by the later larval stages. The aim of this study was to experimentally inoculate cohorts of foals with S. …
