Acropora cervicornis is a critically endangered Caribbean coral species facing a precipitous decline due to disease and thermal bleaching. To combat the loss of ecologically important reef-building corals, novel molecular approaches can be used to understand mechanisms of resilience and ultimately provide a means to modulate coral performance. In this study, we tested a recently developed method for gene knockdown in adult corals that utilizes short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and the RNA interference pathway. The Heat Shock Protein 16.2 (HSP16.2) gene in fragments of adult A. cervicornis was targeted for knockdown using a single siRNA construct. RT-qPCR analysis of HSP16.2 …
Impacts Of Supplemental Fat In Finishing Diets On Digestibility, Performance, Carcass Outcomes, Meat Quality And Methane Production Of Feedlot Cattle, Anna Marie Kobza
Impacts Of Supplemental Fat In Finishing Diets On Digestibility, Performance, Carcass Outcomes, Meat Quality And Methane Production Of Feedlot Cattle, Anna Marie Kobza
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Rising costs and fluctuating availability of supplemental fats has led to increased interest in alternative fat sources or feed additives that might improve utilization of supplemental fat in feedlot diets. Two separate experiments were conducted to evaluate alternative strategies to overcome high fat prices. The first experiment was a metabolism study, conducted to evaluate digestion parameters of supplemental fat sources with or without LYSOFORTE Extend. The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate LYSOFORTE Extend in beef finishing diets containing a saturated fat source (tallow) and unsaturated fat source (corn oil). Duodenally and ruminally fistulated steers were fed diets containing …

Integrated Approaches For Valorization Of Chicken Feather Waste: From Extraction To Application Of Keratin-Based Bioproducts, Muhammad Ehtasham Akram
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation explores the optimization of chicken feathers keratin hydrolysate (CFKH) production using alkaline hydrolysis (AH) and sub-critical water hydrolysis (SCWH), focusing on acquiring high keratin yield in the hydrolysate. Then, CFKH along with other locally sourced materials, was used to develop bioplastics with regenerative agriculture properties (BioWRAP), with the ultimate objective of applying it as a soil mulch to suppress weeds in agricultural crops. This work also addresses challenges in process design and industrial scale-up of BioWRAP. Chapter 1 is a literature review that introduces terms like biobased, biodegradable, and bioplastics, materials and methods used to make bioplastics, and …

The Ethical Ramifications Of Using Insects In Art, Madalynn Lundy
The Ethical Ramifications Of Using Insects In Art, Madalynn Lundy
Honors Projects
Artists have been in collaboration with living and dead beings since the beginning of time. Whether it be in the supplies used to create a piece of art or as the subject itself, insects are and have been a key part of art-making for many artists throughout history. This begs the question regarding the ethics of using insects in art and whether this is morally acceptable. I take interest in this topic as an artist who takes inspiration from insects in my own art. This paper explores various qualitative research methods in an effort to bridge the topics of environmental …

BACKGROUND: The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) has remarkably increased in the past few years as they have demonstrated significant reduction in A1c and major cardiovascular outcomes and have led to weight loss with low risk of hypoglycemia. GLP-1 RA use has raised concerns about potential associations with increased gastric retention and adverse outcomes in upper endoscopy procedures.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases to identify comparative studies evaluating the impact of GLP-1 RA exposure versus non-exposure on upper endoscopy outcomes. Studies comparing GLP-1 RAs to other medications were excluded. The primary outcome was …
Moral Emotions Within The Habituation Of Virtue, Hannah Starr Grubbs-Oechsle
Moral Emotions Within The Habituation Of Virtue, Hannah Starr Grubbs-Oechsle
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this dissertation, I examine how moral emotions feature within the habituation of virtues. I suggest that their primary role within the moral life is epistemic: emotions grant agents perceptual access to evaluative properties in the world. I argue that their perceptual function within habit formation is normatively indispensable. I proceed through five methodological movements. I begin by presenting the three historical accounts of emotion I take as most influential on contemporary Western beliefs about emotion and as most dominant within the philosophy of emotion. To that end, I trace Stoic and Kantian accounts of emotion as representative of the …

The paper suggests that AI-text-to-image function can potentially …
Exploring Lay Meanings Of Happiness In Contemporary India: A Qualitative Inquiry, Kunmun Mishra, Kailash Bl Srivastava Professor
Exploring Lay Meanings Of Happiness In Contemporary India: A Qualitative Inquiry, Kunmun Mishra, Kailash Bl Srivastava Professor
The Qualitative Report
Three decades of professional research suggest several explicit concepts of happiness; however, exploring the lay theories of happiness has largely been overlooked. Addressing this gap, our paper attempts to explore lay concepts of happiness in the contemporary Indian context. Given the inherently subjective nature of happiness, a qualitative study was conducted to explore the impact of beliefs and lived experiences on happiness. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, and transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Meanings, causes, and actions to maintain happiness evolved into seven significant themes: contentment, achievement and hope, collectivist orientation, autonomy, materialism, pragmatic orientation, and spirituality. …

In previous studies we have shown that accumulation of the polymerogenic variant ATZ that causes α1-antitrypsin deficiency (ATD) activates NFκB DNA binding. Here we discovered that this response, which we are naming the polymerized protein response (PPR), is characterized by NFκB p50 homodimers, distinct from the p50/p65 heterodimers in the canonical NFκB inflammatory response and the unfolded protein response (UPR). The PPR is also activated by other disease associated variants that polymerize in the ER whereas disease-associated variants that do not form polymers activate p50/p65 heterodimers and UPR. The PPR elicits a unique gene expression profile, including changes that stabilize …

Cultural Negotiations In Revisionist Mythmaking: Comparative Reading Of Bahram Beyzaei And Mary Zimmerman, Sepehr Karimi Mr., Bahee Hadaegh
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Although more than fifty years have passed since feminist scholars pioneered revisionist mythmaking, drama remains underexplored in this field despite its unique potential for cultural and social reinterpretation. This study offers a comparative analysis of revisionist mythmaking in Iranian and American drama, specifically examining Bahram Beyzaei’s play, One Thousand and First Night alongside Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses as examples. This research aims to establish general principles for revisionist mythmaking within drama, spotlighting the complexities that emerge in transnational contexts. It explores how Beyzaei and Zimmerman negotiate cultural narratives and try to reshape traditional stories and reflect contemporary issues, emphasizing gender dynamics …

Christian Motifs In Forough Farrokhzad’S Works: A Comparison With T.S. Eliot’S Poetry, Mona Monsefi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Forough Farrokhzad’s (1934–1967) film The House is Black (1962) is a visual poem set in a leprosarium in Iran. Farrokhzad was a prominent modernist poet who merged poetry with contemporary art forms, primarily cinema. In this film, she employed a camera to express her poetic vision, highlighting her signature style that prioritizes unique imagery. This emphasis on visual and literary images is often intertwined with themes such as religion. Notably, Farrokhzad recomposed verses from the Old Testament, infusing them with her poetic language to enrich the film’s narrative. This article explores her unique, Western-influenced interpretation of Christian motifs in …

Beyond The Binary: Queer And Trans Activism In Ontario French As Second Language (Fsl) Classrooms, Robert Grant, Elm Allister
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
Drawing from data from a larger doctoral study, this “from the field” report showcases the activist and pedagogical practices of two queer and trans/nonbinary French as a second language (FSL) teachers in Ontario, Canada. Through detailed accounts from elementary and secondary FSL classrooms, we demonstrate activism through empowering (using students’ pronouns and bringing in multiple identities in pedagogical resources), disrupting (challenging assumptions about "normal" identities and families), and resisting (parents' and stakeholders' homophobic and transphobic rhetoric). Our experiences reveal that proactive, consistent integration of 2SLGBTQIA+ representation throughout the classroom discourse minimizes student resistance, particularly in elementary settings where children readily …

Pedagogies Of Heart/Break: Nurturing Trans Resistance Through Beloved Witnessing, Page Valentine Regan
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article calls for spiritual activism on behalf of trans young people. Drawing from the narratives and perspectives of a group of trans young adults of Color situated in the Southeastern United States, the author encourages pedagogies of heart/break. Such a pedagogical position requires a service-based orientation to education, rooted in beloved witnessing. Rather than affinity spaces, political action, or cerebral understanding, beloved witnessing may prove to be a more reliable condition for healing and self-actualization, especially in support of a trans of Color future in educational research, practice and places of learning.

Engines For Activism: Gsa Advisors Sparking Student Activism For Lgbtq+ Equity, Elizabeth J. Meyer, Rebecca Grace Kaplan, Erin Kurtz
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article reports on a study on educators supporting student activism for LGBTQ+ equity in schools. The research questions we address are: What impacts do activist-educators have on the activities of the students in their GSA (Genders & Sexualities Alliance)? In what ways do activist-educators support student activism for LGBTQ+ equity? Based on in-depth interviews with seven educators in Colorado, we use grounded theory to present a conceptual model called “Engines for Activism” (EFA). We share data that explain how student and educator interactions within the space of a student club led by an educator-activist can drive advocacy and activism …

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD), the most common inherited kidney disorder, is characterized by progressive cyst growth and eventual organ failure. Although aberrant innate immune activation is a recognized contributor to PKD progression, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely defined. Here, we showed that Pkd1 deletion increased TLR2 and MyD88 mRNA expression in renal epithelial cells, indicating enhanced innate immune priming. In vivo, administration of Pam3CSK4 (PAM), a synthetic TLR2 agonist, preferentially amplified pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic responses in Pkd1RC/RC mice compared with wild-type controls, despite inducing similar signaling responses in vitro. Acute PAM treatment for one week rapidly enhanced NF-κB …

In our unit group, “Big Fungus,” the Wicked Problem we decided to address was the “Protection of Fungal Networks.” After researching into further depth the attributes of the wicked problem, we would then integrate the information into our prototype with our chosen theoretical lens; “Futures Thinking.” This would involve analysing past, present behaviours, theorising the potential future that this could result in, as well as establishing both the feared and desirable future. In order to reach a target demographic, however, we would decide it would be best to direct our prototype towards Primary School Students (aged 10-12), as this would …

For our project, our group was presented with the 89% project. The 89% project focuses on the 89% of people who want to make a change for our climate, but simply don't commit, essentially getting the route for climate change reduction nowhere.
We chose Behavioural Sciences as our theoretical lens. This means we would be putting time into researching exactly who our audience is, and what attitudes and reactions they hold in regards to climate change. We needed to figure out a way to inform the 89% of this issue, and convince them to join us in improving the way …

Australia’s current housing crisis has made affordable housing increasingly unattainable for young Australians. Rising rents, insecure work, and limited government support have delayed independence, increased homelessness, and widened inequality, especially for those without family financial support. Since COVID-19, rent prices have surged nationwide, while studies show most young Australians feel financially insecure, pessimistic about home ownership, and concerned their future quality of life will decline. Housing Crisis: The Board Game is an artistic prototype which aims to address this wicked problem by raising awareness of the issue – and some empathy as well – to all Australians, with particular focus …

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella
Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints
Scholars have long emphasized the harmful effects of overtly sexist and oppressive media images on young people’s understandings of sex and relationships. Yet, this emphasis on explicit harm leaves a gap in understanding how college students interpret subtle, hidden, and ambiguous media messages. To address this gap, we asked 196 California college students at a large public university to critique a range of mainstream media content—from overtly oppressive, to affirming of nondominant gender identities, to containing mixed messages about empowerment and oppression. Responses were coded using our media literacy scoring guide for assessing students’ ability to critically analyze media messages …

The rapid development of AI has introduced new capabilities, including generating artwork without direct human intervention. However, this advancement has also raised concerns in the art world, such as unauthorized use of artists’ works and the potential decline of human creative labor. This study examines the information behavior of digital artists who are students at the University of Indonesia toward AI-generated artwork, using Wilson’s Model of Information Behavior (1996). A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through structured interviews with five informants and literature review, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that participants generally held an …
