Design And Development Of A 3-Degree Of Freedom Parallel Manipulator / Lubabatu Baballe Ila, Baballe Ila Lubabatu
Design And Development Of A 3-Degree Of Freedom Parallel Manipulator / Lubabatu Baballe Ila, Baballe Ila Lubabatu
Student Works (2010-2019)
Parallel manipulators have gained a lot of interest during the recent five decades. A parallel manipulator is constructed with an upper moving platform and a lower fixed platform, connected by at least two linkages in parallel, hence the name. Parallel manipulators have so many advantages over their serial counterparts. Some of these advantages are high accuracy, high stiffness and low inertia which make them favorable for numerous applications. Parallel manipulators also have several disadvantages such as high cost, small workspace, complex forward kinematics and complicated forms. To alleviate these disadvantages, the design and development of parallel manipulators with less than …

Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk
Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this study was, will the use of technology and phenology increase students’ observation skills? The catalysts for this capstone were research using observation as an everyday skill fundamental to all scientific disciplines, and the importance of teaching children how to observe and document their observations. The capstone describes the process of integrating phenology, knowledge of the five senses, and iPad technology to teach students the importance of observation and its relevance to their everyday lives. The author concludes that: 1) although the collected data did not show a significant increase in observations, students’ observations became …

Benerd College Faculty Articles
Multimodal composing is part of the Common Core vision of the twenty-first-century student. Two descriptive studies were conducted of fifth-grade students’ digital folktale retellings. Study 1 analyzed 83 retellings in relation to the types and frequencies of modal use, such as image, sound, movement, and written text, as well as their retelling accuracy. Students composed within a scaffolded digital composing environment which comprised the PowerPoint authoring/presentation tool and a researcher-developed story frame. All students’ retellings included writing and visual design, 80% included animation, and 70% included sound. Retelling accuracy scores averaged 54%. Study 2 was conducted with a new group …
Hyperlegality And Heightened Surveillance: The Case Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman
Hyperlegality And Heightened Surveillance: The Case Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
My contribution to the Debate "Thinking about Law and Surveillance" focuses on the project of governing nonhuman species through care, briefly pointing to how law and surveillance are interwoven in this context and to how conservation's biopolitical regimes are increasingly becoming more abstract, standardized, calculable, and algorithmic in scope. I argue that conservation’s focus on governing through care lends itself to heightened modes of surveillance and to hyperlegality - namely, to the intensified inspection and regulation of both governed and governing actors. I start with some preliminary explanations about my atypical use of the terms surveillance, law, and biopolitics.

Epstein–Barr Virus-Encoded Microrna Bart1 Induces Tumour Metastasis By Regulating Pten-Dependent Pathways In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, L Cai, Y Ye, Q Jiang, Y Chen, Et Al
Epstein–Barr Virus-Encoded Microrna Bart1 Induces Tumour Metastasis By Regulating Pten-Dependent Pathways In Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, L Cai, Y Ye, Q Jiang, Y Chen, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), aetiologically linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), is the first human virus found to encode many miRNAs. However, how these viral miRNAs precisely regulate the tumour metastasis in NPC remains obscure. Here we report that EBV-miR-BART1 is highly expressed in NPC and closely associated with pathological and advanced clinical stages of NPC. Alteration of EBV-miR-BART1 expression results in an increase in migration and invasion of NPC cells in vitro and causes tumour metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, EBV-miR-BART1 directly targets the cellular tumour suppressor PTEN. Reduction of PTEN dosage by EBV-miR-BART1 activates PTEN-dependent pathways including PI3K-Akt, FAK-p130Cas and Shc-MAPK/ERK1/2 …

Intellectual Property Rights In Virtual Environments: Considering The Rights Of Owners, Programmers And Virtual Avatars, Woodrow Barfield
Intellectual Property Rights In Virtual Environments: Considering The Rights Of Owners, Programmers And Virtual Avatars, Woodrow Barfield
Akron Law Review
An emerging issue in online role-playing games is whether the licensor or participant owns the virtual property (such as a virtual avatar) created while the game is being played...Such rights have real world consequences for the objects created in the virtual world...Commercial software has been designed to allow people to create their own interactive, emoting 3D avatar using photographs of their individual faces, and their own unique voice as templates...Virtual environments can be designed for single inhabitants, such as a solo flight trainee, or for many, simultaneous participants... Further, people who spend significant amounts of time in virtual environments are …
The Logic Of Legal Remedies And The Relative Weight Of Norms: Assessing The Public Interest In The Tort Reform Debate, Irma S. Russell
The Logic Of Legal Remedies And The Relative Weight Of Norms: Assessing The Public Interest In The Tort Reform Debate, Irma S. Russell
Akron Law Review
Part II of this essay examines the need to identify, measure, and compare the interests at stake in any legal contest with rigorous consistency. It also notes the corollary principle of proportionality as a limiting principle that guards against foolish or destructive consistency. Part III explores the natural hierarchy among legal norms and the weight accorded various types of interests that deserve legal protection. Part IV considers the system of measurement presented by the current tort reform movement, exploring the failure of many proponents of tort reform to account for or accommodate the tradition of a more generous and protective …
The Right To Freely Have Sex? Beyond Biology: Reproductive Rights And Sexual Self-Determination, Yakaré-Oulé Jansen
The Right To Freely Have Sex? Beyond Biology: Reproductive Rights And Sexual Self-Determination, Yakaré-Oulé Jansen
Akron Law Review
Part I will briefly set out how sexual rights are approached in the national legal arena. The way the U.S. Supreme Court treats reproductive rights provides a good example as it has some analogies with the treatment of reproductive rights under international human rights law; the Court focuses primarily on the biological aspects of sexuality and has been reluctant to acknowledge rights that fall within the realm of sexual self-determination. This case study is followed in Part II by an analysis of to what extent the treaty bodies of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (“ICCPR”), International Covenant …

Tribal, State, And Federal Cooperation To Achieve Good Governance, Elizabeth Burleson
Akron Law Review
This article considers tribal, state, and federal cooperation to achieve good governance. Part II discusses the patchwork of laws affecting Indian country and analyzes the ways in which criminal jurisdictional uncertainty affects native sovereignty and public safety. Where the legal analysis does not depend upon the use of the term “Indian,” the following discussion uses the term indigenous peoples. Part III addresses civil jurisdiction over non-Indians in general and tribal water quality regulation in particular. Management of natural resources remains one of the core aspects of sovereignty that tribes have retained. The section examines judicial recognition of tribal water rights …

Looking Back And Looking Forward: Sarbanes-Oxley And The Future Of Corporate Governance, Scott Harshbarger, Goutam U. Jois
Akron Law Review
In this Article, we argue that all groups: business leaders, regulators and shareholders, should recognize the steps that must be taken to create a competitive, fair and ethical corporate climate. We are not calling merely for “voluntary cooperation” from businesses to improve the current situation. Indeed, SOX exists and is appropriate for this situation precisely because it imposes baseline obligations with which corporations are required to comply. Moreover, other regulations regarding independent directors, expensing of stock options, etc. are needed and are vital to keeping business interests in line with society’s. However, business leaders and regulators will have an easier …

Global Chaucers, our multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-year project, intends to locate, catalog, translate, archive, and analyze non-Anglophone appropriations and translations of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Since its founding in 2012, this project has rapidly changed in response to scholars’ diverse interests and our expanding discoveries. Almost all these changes were prompted and made possible by our online presence (including a blog and Facebook group), and digital media comprises our primary means for gathering information, disseminating our findings, advertising conferences and events, and promoting the resource to other scholars. Because digital media can help disparate people traverse geographical and linguistic barriers, …
“Nede Hath No Law”: The State Of Exception In Gower And Langland, Conrad J. Van Dijk
“Nede Hath No Law”: The State Of Exception In Gower And Langland, Conrad J. Van Dijk
Accessus
This article discusses the use of the legal maxim necessity knows no law in the works of William Langland and John Gower. Whereas Langland’s usage has stirred up great controversy, Gower’s unique application of the canon law adage has received hardly any attention. On the surface, it is difficult to think of two authors less alike, and the way in which they relate the concept of necessity to different subjects (the poverty debate, fin amour) seems to support that feeling. Yet this article argues that reading Langland and Gower side by side is mutually illuminating. Specifically, this article reveals …

Agrarian Future(S) Of Rural Nepal: Revitalizing Peasant Agriculture?, Ramesh K. Sunam, Keshab R. Goutam
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Discourses on peasant agriculture have heightened in the context of recurrent food crisis and persistent poverty in Nepal as in many parts of the global South. Although an industrialized model of agriculture has been promoted as a pathway to a food-secure future, it has been heavily criticized for being environmentally destructive and socially unbearable. In this broader context, we examine peasant farming to explore enabling factors and barriers for its revitalization in Nepal, where the vast majority of rural people depends on farming for their livelihoods. This research draws on case studies of two agrarian villages characterized mainly by the …

"As Our Ancestors Once Lived": Representation, Performance, And Constructing A National Culture Amongst The Nagas Of India., Arkotong Longkumer
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper focuses on how a national culture emerges by examining the Nagas of India. To appreciate this process, the confluence of British colonialism, the postcolonial situation, and contemporary performance of Naga identity (visible in the Hornbill Festival) must be analyzed. I will argue that the colonial era representation of ‘primitivism’ of the Nagas continues into postcolonial narratives of ‘imperialist nostalgia’ disseminated primarily through travel, popular media and museum exhibitions. I will argue that the Nagas are not simply passive onlookers, but active participants in this enterprise through the strategic articulation of a distinct Naga national image. I will demonstrate …

Which Medicine? Medicine-Taking And Changing Sherpa Lives, Susan Heydon
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
An increasing quantity of medicines, including medicines of different healing systems, have become available since the nineteen fifties to the mainly Sherpa inhabitants of the Mt. Everest region of Nepal. Considerable change and economic development has occurred in which this mountainous and remote area has become one of Nepal’s principal tourist destinations and people have gained access to education, health services, and modern means of communication. Many Sherpa travel regularly in Nepal and overseas, especially for work, education, or pilgrimage, or have migrated permanently. Focusing on oral histories, this article explores factors that have influenced people’s use of different medicines …

"Everyone Is Leaving. Who Will Sow Our Fields?” The Livelihood Effects On Women Of Male Migration From Khotang And Udaypur Districts, Nepal, To The Gulf Countries And Malaysia., Jagannath Adhikari, Mary Hobley
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Over the last ten years, the massive outmigration for foreign employment, mostly to the Gulf and Malaysia, has changed the livelihoods and social structure of rural Nepal. The remittance inflows into rural districts dwarf other flows of finance, and the absence of men from the agricultural and other labor forces has severe effects on agricultural production and gender relations. A study undertaken in the Khotang and Udaypur districts in the hills of Nepal indicates a complex series of social, economic, and ecological effects of migration at household and community level. This paper presents these findings, focusing on the gendered and …
Assessing Volition In Pediatrics: Using The Volitional Questionnaire And The Pediatric Volitional Questionnaire, Anne Kiraly-Alvarez
Assessing Volition In Pediatrics: Using The Volitional Questionnaire And The Pediatric Volitional Questionnaire, Anne Kiraly-Alvarez
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Evidence suggests that pediatric occupational therapists predominantly use bottom-up, impairment-focused theoretical frameworks and assessments to guide their practice, despite the current trends promoting top-down, occupation-based approaches. Understanding a child’s volition, guided by the use of the Model of Human Occupation, contributes to a more occupation-based, client-centered, holistic, and strength-based approach to therapy. Two assessment tools, the Volitional Questionnaire and the Pediatric Volitional Questionnaire, contribute to a therapists’ understanding of children’s volition. These assessments facilitate therapists’ clinical reasoning and the ability to assess and address volition throughout the occupational therapy process.

Please Turn Your Lights Off, The Turtles Are Nesting: Ensuring That Federal, State, And Local Laws Help Guide Endangered Marine Turtle Hatchlings In Florida To The Right Source Of Light, Cameryn Justice Rivera
Student Works
In Florida, artificial lighting is a huge problem for marine turtle hatchlings and nesting mothers. Part I of this paper provides background information on sea turtle behavioral patterns in nesting and hatching, while also highlighting the problems of disorientation and nesting deterrence. Part II examines federal and state laws that authorize and delegate sea turtle oversight protections, administer legal and practical protection, and attempt to enforce the laws to prevent sea turtle disturbances or deaths. Part III discusses local ordinance regulations on artificial lighting and comments on the Model Lighting Ordinance in Florida. Part IV analyzes sea turtle law coordination …

The Impact Of Pelvic Floor Therapy On Adult Women With Intersticial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome, Christina M. Shuker
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program
Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome is a major source of chronic pelvic pain and disability affecting women of all ages, predominantly age 18 years and over. Estimates of prevalence among US women range from 2.7% to 6.5% translating to 3.4 and 7.9 million women who have symptoms consistent with this debilitating condition (Kerr, 2009). The bladder epithelium has been the focus for diagnosing and treating symptoms of IC, however taking focus away from the bladder has opened the door for clinicians to explore pelvic floor dysfunction indicating that pelvic floor therapies should be a first line treatment for those women with …

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at increased risk for colon cancer due to augmented oxidative stress. These patients also have compromised antioxidant defenses as the result of nutritional deficiencies. The micronutrient selenium is essential for selenoprotein production and is transported from the liver to target tissues via selenoprotein P (SEPP1). Target tissues also produce SEPP1, which is thought to possess an endogenous antioxidant function. Here, we have shown that mice with Sepp1 haploinsufficiency or mutations that disrupt either the selenium transport or the enzymatic domain of SEPP1 exhibit increased colitis-associated carcinogenesis as the result of increased genomic instability and …

Unplugged: An Augmented Reality Party Of Poetry, Prose, And Music, Joshua A. Fisher
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Unplugged: An Augmented Reality Party of Poetry, Prose, and Music is a theoretical practice in the effects of augmented reality (AR) on traditional paper publishing. Constructed using an AR technology created by Metaio, party photography from Vancouver, and original prose poetry Unplugged is a hypermediated book that traverses the physical and digital planes. Readers interact with the text via a mobile app, also called Unplugged, which projects pseudo-holograms of movies, images, and animations onto the printed page. In addition, the app provides environmental soundscapes that inform the reading experience. This AR inspired story creates an immersive media activity unlike anything …
Please, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood: Intentionality, Queer Gestures, And Feminist Accountability, Katelyn Heinekamp
Please, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood: Intentionality, Queer Gestures, And Feminist Accountability, Katelyn Heinekamp
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to theoretically situate and define intentionality specifically as a feminist practice through queer gesturing; this re-defining places intentionality within a framework of accountability. By defining intent through the distibution of responsibility, this thesis addresses the impossibility in perfection of intentionality and the language of mis-gesturing and accountability. Using queer theory, anti-racist feminisms, transformative/restorative justice, and coalitional contexts this project uses canoncial notions of academic theory as well as personal storying to understand the implications and radical possibilities of intentionality. Through the use of everyday, discursive colloquialisms (as evidence of the intent versus impact binary), this project calls …

Parent-Offspring Resemblance In Colony-Specific Adult Survival Of Cliff Swallows, Charles R. Brown, Erin A. Roche, Mary Bomberger Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Survival is a key component of fitness. Species that occupy discrete breeding colonies with different characteristics are often exposed to varying costs and benefits associated with group size or environmental conditions, and survival is an integrative net measure of these effects. We investigated the extent to which survival probability of adult (≥ 1-year old) cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) occupying different colonies resembled that of their parental cohort and thus whether the natal colony had long-term effects on individuals. Individuals were cross-fostered between colonies soon after hatching and their presence as breeders monitored at colonies in the western Nebraska …
