Buteo Nesting Ecology: Evaluating Nesting Of Swainson’S Hawks In The Northern Great Plains, Will M. Inselman, Shubham Datta, Jonathan Jenks, Kent Jensen, Troy Grovenburg
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
Swainson’s hawks (Buteo swainsoni) are long-distance migratory raptors that nest primarily in isolated trees located in areas of high grassland density. In recent years, anthropogenic conversion of grassland habitat has raised concerns about the status of the breeding population in the northern Great Plains. In 2013, we initiated a study to investigate the influence of extrinsic factors influencing Swainson’s hawk nesting ecology in north-central South Dakota and south-central North Dakota. Using ground and aerial surveys, we located and monitored nesting Swainson’s hawk pairs: 73 in 2013 and 120 in 2014. We documented 98 successful breeding attempts that fledged …
Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Aggressive Elementary Children, Kari Newman
Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Aggressive Elementary Children, Kari Newman
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effect of bibliotherapy as an intervention for aggressive elementary children at a residential treatment center in the western United States. Bibliotherapy was provided for six children, three boys and three girls, ages 9 to 11, Caucasian and Hispanic, who took part in one of two groups. The study involved a multi-baseline design, beginning with a baseline phase, followed by two separate intervention phases comprised of eight sessions of bibliotherapy. Data gathered from almost daily observations along with pre- and post-intervention ratings of aggressive behaviors indicated that four of the six students demonstrated notable decreases in observed …
A Review Of Basic Research On Homoeopathy From A Physicist′S Point Of View, Papiya Nandy
A Review Of Basic Research On Homoeopathy From A Physicist′S Point Of View, Papiya Nandy
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Homoeopathic medicine has been one of the world′s most widely practiced alternative therapies. However, that the potency of a homoeopathic medicine increases with dilution followed by succussion (together termed as potentization) has thrown challenges to the scientific community at large. A recent hypothesis, advanced by us and others, is that due to the process of potentization, the size of the constituent particles decreases and eventually reaches nanodimension. This decrease in size with increase in potency has been verified by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering studies. The increase in potency is manifested in its increased effect on membrane fluidity. …

Kaffka's (1880-1918) Life Writing And Objection To The War, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Kaffka's (1880-1918) Life Writing and Objection to the War" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek discusses the Hungarian author's poems, diary entries, and fictional texts. While Kaffka's importance as one of the most influential writers in modern Hungarian literature is recognized, her oeuvre as proto-feminist writing has only been studied only since the 1990s. Further, Kaffka's anti-war writing has not been explored except in a few isolated instances. Tötösy de Zepetnek elaborates Kaffka's objection to the war as seen in her poetry published in 1914 and in her diaries and correspondence and argues that Kaffka's objection to the war …
The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers
The Wilderness In Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience And Society, Lisa Myers
English Language and Literature ETDs
The Wilderness in Medieval English Literature: Genre, Audience and Society' focuses on the disjunction between the actual environmental conditions of medieval England and the depiction of the wilderness in the literature of the time period from the Anglo-Saxon conversion to the close of the Middle Ages. Using environmental history to identify the moments of slippage between fact and fiction, this project examines the ideology behind the representations of the wilderness in literature and the relationship of these representations to social practices and cultural norms as well as genre and targeted audience. The first chapter argues that the depiction of early …

The Korean War, Memory, And Nostalgia, Won-Chung Kim
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Korean War, Memory, and Nostalgia" Won-Chung Kim investigates how the imagination of (im)migration still governs the consciousness of the Korean people by examining Wonil Kim's 1979도요새에 관한 명상 (Dreaming of the Snipe / Meditation on a Snipe) and Hui-jin Kang's 2011 유령 (The Ghost). Because of the war as many as ten million Koreans were displaced and separated from their families and they struggle with war trauma. Won-Chung Kim's analysis of the two texts suggests the interconnectedness of life writing and the trauma of war. Further, as the recent surge of the North Korean …

Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs As Reflected In Appelfeld's The Story Of A Life, Dana Mihăilescu
Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs As Reflected In Appelfeld's The Story Of A Life, Dana Mihăilescu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Holocaust Child Survivors' Memoirs as Reflected in Appelfeld's The Story of a Life" Dana Mihăilescu identifies characteristics of child survivors' memoirs in Aharon Appelfeld's writing. Mihăilescu addresses the following main question: is the structure of child survivors' memoirs similar to that of Holocaust memoirs written by adult survivors or is there a tendency to focus on certain aspects given the young age some had at the time? Mihăilescu argues that unlike regular autobiographies by Holocaust adult survivors, child survivors' memoirs are less constructed around factual events of private and public relevance and that they concentrate instead …
Women's Wartime Life Writing In Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo
Women's Wartime Life Writing In Early Twentieth-Century China, Li Guo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Women's Wartime Life Writing in Early Twentieth-Century China" Li Guo discusses military diaries, prison memoirs, and autobiographical reportages. These documents offer rich insights into the political endeavors and military mobility of women. Guo analyzes Bingying Xie's 1928 war diary about the Chinese nationalists' northern expedition, Langi Hu's 1937 book about anti-Japanese activism, and Lang Bai's 1939 reportage about the Sino-Japanese War and argues that these texts allow women to reconfigure the discourse of nation through experimental life writing in order to develop the genre with tales of valor, hope, struggle, and heroism. Guo argues that contrary to …

A Female Adolescent Bystander's Diary And The Jewish Hungarian Holocaust, Gergely Kunt
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "A Female Adolescent Bystander's Diary and the Jewish Hungarian Holocaust" Gergely Kunt analyzes the unpublished diary manuscript of Margit Molnár, a Hungarian Roman Catholic adolescent girl born in 1927 who kept a diary between 1941 and 1949. Kunt's analysis shows how Molnár viewed Jews, the persecution of Jews, and the anti-Jewish terror in Budapest. As the diary documents, Molnár's views of the Jews temporarily changed during the Arrow Cross's reign of terror in October 1944 when she received news of the Arrow Cross murdering Jews en masse in Budapest. However, once the war was over, Molnár's deep-seated …

En-Gendering Memory Through Holocaust Alimentary Life Writing, Louise O. Vasvári
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "En-gendering Memory through Holocaust Alimentary Life Writing" Louise O. Vasvári aims to underline the cultural and gendered significance of the sharing of recipes as a survival tool by starving women in concentration camps during the Holocaust and the continuing role of food memories in the writing of Holocaust survivor women she considers a genealogy of intergenerational remembrance and transmission into the postmemory writing of their second generation daughters and occasionally their sons. Vasvári argues that the study of multigenerational Holocaust alimentary life writing becomes important today because as direct survivors of the Holocaust disappear there is a …

Prevalence Of Porcine Sapovirus In Suckling Piglets In Hunan Province, China, Sheng-Guo Tan, Na Liu, Ping-Yuan Xu
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Sapoviruses (SaVs) are emerging enteric pathogens that cause diarrhea in humans and animals. In the current study, genetic identification of sapovirus (SaV) in suckling piglets was investigated in Hunan province, China between May 2013 and May 2014. Diarrheic fecal (n=300) samples collected from suckling piglets in Hunan province, China were evaluated using RT-PCR and then sequenced. Overall, 45 of the 300 (15%) samples were found to contain porcine SaV. In addition, phylogenetic analysis showed that all the porcine SaV isolates belonged to the porcine SaV genogroup III (GIII). The results of the present investigation have implications for the control of …

Current Status Of The Northern Long-Eared Myotis (Myotis Septentrionalis) In Northwestern Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Patricia Freeman, Cliff Lemen
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The Northern Long-eared Myotis (Myotis septentrionalis; Order: Chiroptera) occurs in eastern, southern, and northern Nebraska, but its current distribution in northwestern parts of the state is unclear due to its recent arrival to the region. We investigated the status of this species in the Pine Ridge via mist net (2011-2014) and acoustic surveys (2014). We documented nine species of bats in the region, including M. septentrionalis. Of 423 total bats, M. septentrionalis was represented by four individuals, the fewest of all species during our four-year survey. We only documented M. septentrionalis in Sheridan County; …

Homoeopathic Treatment Of Heloma Durum-Case Report, K Nisanth Nambisan, Smita Nambisan
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Heloma durums also known as corns are areas of hard, thickened skin which commonly occur on the feet, and can cause pain, discomfort, and they also tend to reoccur. Two cases of plantar heloma durums illustrated here were treated with same medicines with similar genetic make-up, that is, father and daughter. Father received the medicine after case taking whereas 15 years later, the daughter received homoeopathic treatment given to the father. Both tried other modes of treatment including invasive procedure before being successfully cured in a short span of time with homoeopathic treatment protocol. Here, the same treatment cured both …

Medulla: A 2d Sidescrolling Platformer Game That Teaches Basic Brain Structure And Function, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Stephanie Vie
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article explores the design and instructional effectiveness of Medulla, an educational game meant to teach brain structure and function to undergraduate psychology students. Developed in the retro-style platformer genre, Medulla uses two-dimensional gameplay with pixel-based graphics to engage students in learning content related to the brain, information which is often pre-requisite to more rigorous psychological study. A pretest posttest design was used in an experiment assessing Medulla’s ability to teach psychology content. Results indicated content knowledge was significantly higher on the posttest than the pretest, with a large effect size. Medulla appears to be an effective learning tool. These …

Bioinformatics Approaches To Single-Cell Analysis In Developmental Biology, Dicle Yalcin, Zeynep M. Hakguder, Hasan H. Otu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Individual cells within the same population show various degrees of heterogeneity, which may be better handled with single-cell analysis to address biological and clinical questions. Single-cell analysis is especially important in developmental biology as subtle spatial and temporal differences in cells have significant associations with cell fate decisions during differentiation and with the description of a particular state of a cell exhibiting an aberrant phenotype. Biotechnological advances, especially in the area of microfluidics, have led to a robust, massively parallel and multi-dimensional capturing, sorting, and lysis of single-cells and amplification of related macromolecules, which have enabled the use of imaging …

Papers in Herpetology
Introduced species of amphibians and reptiles are of growing conservation concern (Bury and Luckenbach 1976; Krysko et al. 2011; Meshaka 2011). Unintentional introductions result largely from individuals escaping from enclosures or hitch-hiking in cargo or on vehicles, whereas intentional introductions occur primarily because a species is perceived to be of value to humans or from deliberately releasing sick or unwanted animals, including pets (Kraus 2009; Krysko et al. 2011). In Florida, most known introductions are directly related to the pet trade, but about 12% are related to the cargo pathway (Krysko et al. 2011). In this paper, we report the …
