Diagnostics Need Not Apply, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Sep 2015

Diagnostics Need Not Apply, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Diagnostic testing helps caregivers and patients understand a patient's condition, predict future outcomes, select appropriate treatments, and determine whether treatment is working. Improvements in diagnostic testing are essential to bringing about the long-heralded promise of personalized medicine. Yet it seems increasingly clear that most important advances in this type of medical technology lie outside the boundaries of patent-eligible subject matter. The clarity of this conclusion has been obscured by ambiguity in the recent decisions of the Supreme Court concerning patent eligibility. Since its 2010 decision in Bilski v. Kappos, the Court has followed a discipline of limiting judicial exclusions from …

Distance Effects In Similarity Based Free Categorization, Benjamin Alan Miller Sep 2015

Distance Effects In Similarity Based Free Categorization, Benjamin Alan Miller

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This experiment investigated the processes underlying similarity-based free categorization. Of particular interest was how temporal distance between similar objects affects the likelihood that people will put them into the same novel category. Participants engaged in a free categorization task referred to as binomial labeling. This task required participants to generate a two-part label (A1, B1, C1, etc.) indicating family (superordinate) and species (subordinate) levels of categorization for each object in a visual display. Participants were shown the objects one at a time in a sequential presentation; after labeling each object, they were asked to describe the similarity between that …

Experimental Studies Of The Chemical Effects Of Zinc-Bearing Materials Following A Loss-Of-Coolant Accident In A Pressurized Water Reactor, David Allan Pease Sep 2015

Experimental Studies Of The Chemical Effects Of Zinc-Bearing Materials Following A Loss-Of-Coolant Accident In A Pressurized Water Reactor, David Allan Pease

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Generic Safety Issue-191 (GSI-191) was developed by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S. NRC) to assess the effect of debris loading on pressurized water reactor (PWR) emergency core cooling systems (ECCS) sump strainers during a Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA). Potential contributors to the debris loading include latent dirt, fiberglass insulation, paints, epoxies, and chemical products which form when containment surfaces interact with the released reactor coolant. Chemical effects experiments have been completed to assess the potential debris loading contributions of zinc-bearing materials found in the containment building. Zinc-bearing materials in containment include galvanized steel and inorganic zinc-coated steel (IOZ). This …

Name List Only? Target Entity Disambiguation In Short Texts, Yixin Cao, Juanzi Li, Xiaofei Guo, Shuanhu Bai, Heng Ji, Jie Tang Sep 2015

Name List Only? Target Entity Disambiguation In Short Texts, Yixin Cao, Juanzi Li, Xiaofei Guo, Shuanhu Bai, Heng Ji, Jie Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Target entity disambiguation (TED), the task of identifying target entities of the same domain, has been recognized as a critical step in various important applications. In this paper, we propose a graphbased model called TremenRank to collectively identify target entities in short texts given a name list only. TremenRank propagates trust within the graph, allowing for an arbitrary number of target entities and texts using inverted index technology. Furthermore, we design a multi-layer directed graph to assign different trust levels to short texts for better performance. The experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods with an average gain …

Acetyl Coa Carboxylase Inactivation And Meiotic Maturation In Mouse Oocytes, Deepa S. Valsangkar, Stephen M. Downs Sep 2015

Acetyl Coa Carboxylase Inactivation And Meiotic Maturation In Mouse Oocytes, Deepa S. Valsangkar, Stephen M. Downs

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In mouse oocytes, meiotic induction by pharmacological activation of PRKA (adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase; formerly known as AMPK) or by hormones depends on stimulation of fatty acid oxidation (FAO). PRKA stimulates FAO by phosphorylating and inactivating acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACAC; formerly ACC), leading to decreased malonyl CoA levels and augmenting fatty-acid transport into mitochondria. We investigated a role for ACAC inactivation in meiotic resumption by testing the effect of two ACAC inhibitors, CP-640186 and Soraphen A, on mouse oocytes maintained in meiotic arrest in vitro. These inhibitors significantly stimulated the resumption of meiosis in arrested cumulus cell-enclosed oocytes, denuded oocytes, …

Five Phases Of Brokered International Marriages In South Korea: A Complexity Perspective, Jiyoung Song Sep 2015

Five Phases Of Brokered International Marriages In South Korea: A Complexity Perspective, Jiyoung Song

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The paper examines the evolution in international commercial marriage migration from Southeast Asia to South Korea from a Complexity Theory (CT) framework, originally from natural sciences but vastly entering the field of social sciences. CT stresses the non-linear nature of complex systems that are composed of a large number of individual components operating within a conditioned boundary whose interactions lead emergent properties in an unpredictable way. The study is based on the author’s fieldwork interviews and participatory observations of marriage migrants, government officers, and social workers in South Korea in 2010-2013, which establishes five phases of brokered marriages, namely, (1) …

The Problem With Words: Plain Language And Public Participation In Rulemaking, Cynthia R. Farina, Mary J. Newhart, Cheryl Blake Sep 2015

The Problem With Words: Plain Language And Public Participation In Rulemaking, Cynthia R. Farina, Mary J. Newhart, Cheryl Blake

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Article, part of the special issue commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Administrative Conference of the United States (“ACUS”), situates ACUS’s recommendations for improving public rulemaking participation in the context of the federal “plain language” movement. The connection between broader, better public participation and more comprehensible rulemaking materials seems obvious, and ACUS recommendations have recognized this connection for almost half a century. Remarkably, though, the series of presidential and statutory plain-language directives on this topic have not even mentioned the relationship of comprehensibility to participation until very recently. In 2012, the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (“OIRA”) issued …

To Support A "Brother In Christ": Evangelical Groups And U.S.-Guatemalan Relations During The Ríos Montt Regime, Lauren Frances Turek Sep 2015

To Support A "Brother In Christ": Evangelical Groups And U.S.-Guatemalan Relations During The Ríos Montt Regime, Lauren Frances Turek

History Faculty Research

After Ríos Montt, an evangelical Christian, seized power in Guatemala in a 1982 military coup, U.S. evangelical missionaries and parachurch organizations supported his regime through public outreach, fundraising, and congressional lobbying. Despite mounting evidence that Ríos Montt’s campaign against Guatemala’s “communist insurgency” involved the mass killing of indigenous Mayans, conservative evangelical groups in the United States argued that the dictator’s Christian faith would compel him to improve the country’s human rights situation. This essay explores the theological beliefs underpinning evangelical support for Ríos Montt and contends that backing from U.S. and Guatemalan evangelicals for his regime and for Reagan administration’s …

The Historical Construction Of The Native American Other And U.S. Self: A Conceptually Schizophrenic Perspective, Garrett Johnson Sep 2015

The Historical Construction Of The Native American Other And U.S. Self: A Conceptually Schizophrenic Perspective, Garrett Johnson

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This Thesis traces and analyzes the historical antecedents that have led to a conceptually schizophrenic image of the Native American Other, as constructed within dominant U.S. discourses. The Thesis argues that this conceptual schizophrenia, a term borrowed from J. Marshall Beier, has been highly productive in justifying and maintaining U.S. hegemony over North American Indigenous peoples, communities, and nations. The Thesis develops a fluid historical materialist framework in order to analyze the role that capital development plays in continually shaping and developing this schizophrenic perspective. The schizophrenic perspective is not static, but fluid, and it is this fluidity that allows …

UNLABELLED: Interferon-induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 1 (IFIT1) is a host protein with reported cell-intrinsic antiviral activity against several RNA viruses. The proposed basis for the activity against negative-sense RNA viruses is the binding to exposed 5'-triphosphates (5'-ppp) on the genome of viral RNA. However, recent studies reported relatively low binding affinities of IFIT1 for 5'-ppp RNA, suggesting that IFIT1 may not interact efficiently with this moiety under physiological conditions. To evaluate the ability of IFIT1 to have an impact on negative-sense RNA viruses, we infected Ifit1(-/-) and wild-type control mice and primary cells with four negative-sense RNA viruses (influenza …

The Phenomenology Of Second Language Acquisition: Poiesis And The Emergence Of The Multilingual Subject, Courtney E. Scarborough Sep 2015

The Phenomenology Of Second Language Acquisition: Poiesis And The Emergence Of The Multilingual Subject, Courtney E. Scarborough

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study explores relationships between second language acquisition (SLA), poetic language, and embodied cognition and its connection to second language speakers’ linguistic self-formation, or their distinct ways of speaking and thinking. In particular, this study examines processes by which second language (L2) learners’ subjective realities are constructed and demonstrates that these processes are inherently poetic, emerging from a combination of the constraining structures of the language system and second language speakers’ phenomenological experiences. The context of the study is a poetry-making activity the researcher designed and took place in the English Department Writing Center at California State University, San Bernardino. …

Toward A Two-Stage Model Of Free Categorization, Gregory J. Smith Sep 2015

Toward A Two-Stage Model Of Free Categorization, Gregory J. Smith

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This research examines how comparison of objects underlies free categorization, an essential component of human cognition. Previous results using our binomial labeling task have shown that classification probabilities are affected in a graded manner as a function of similarity, i.e., the number of features shared by two objects. In a similarity rating task, people also rated objects sharing more features as more similar. However, the effect of matching features was approximately linear in the similarity task, but superadditive (exponential) in the labeling task. We hypothesize that this difference is due to the fact that people must select specific objects to …

Multi-Stress Proteomics: The Global Protein Response To Multiple Environmental Stressors In The Porcelain Crab Petrolisthes Cinctipes, Michael A. Garland Sep 2015

Multi-Stress Proteomics: The Global Protein Response To Multiple Environmental Stressors In The Porcelain Crab Petrolisthes Cinctipes, Michael A. Garland

Master's Theses

Global climate change is increasing the number of hot days along the California coast as well as increasing the incidence of off-shore upwelling events that lower the pH of intertidal seawater; thus, intertidal organisms are experiencing an increase in more than one stress simultaneously. This study seeks to characterize the global protein response of the eurythermal porcelain crab Petrolisthes cinctipes to changes in thermal, pH, and tidal regime treatments, either combined or individually. The first experiment examined temperature stress alone and sought to determine the effect of chronic temperature acclimation on the acute heat shock response. We compared the proteomic …

Morphological Response In Sister Taxa Of Woodrats (Genus: Neotoma) Across A Zone Of Secondary Contact, Michaela M. Koenig Sep 2015

Morphological Response In Sister Taxa Of Woodrats (Genus: Neotoma) Across A Zone Of Secondary Contact, Michaela M. Koenig

Master's Theses

This study focuses on a secondary contact zone between two sister species of woodrat, Neotoma fuscipes (dusky-footed woodrat) and N. macrotis (big-eared woodrat). Along the Nacimiento River, on the border of southern Monterey and northern San Luis Obispo counties, the ranges of these sister species of woodrats meet and overlap forming a secondary contact zone. The zone of secondary contact is estimated to include a 500-meter (~1,650 linear feet) portion of the Nacimiento River riparian corridor.

This research examines quantifiable morphological change that is likely associated with heightened inter-specific competition within the contact zone. When in sympatry the sister species …

The Penetration Of European Ideology In The Atlantic World: “Othering” And “Deforming” The Image Of The African Queen Njinga Of Matamba In The Narrative Of Capuchin Monk Fra. Cavazzi Da Montecúccolo, Celina Cavalcanti-Bennett Sep 2015

The Penetration Of European Ideology In The Atlantic World: “Othering” And “Deforming” The Image Of The African Queen Njinga Of Matamba In The Narrative Of Capuchin Monk Fra. Cavazzi Da Montecúccolo, Celina Cavalcanti-Bennett

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This thesis examines how language deforms the image of the 'pagan and barbarous' inhabitants of the African continent, and specifically that of Queen Njinga of Matamba, through the process of 'Othering,' realized by the racist imperialist ideology embedded in European writings. I argue that the representation of Africans and African subjects in Fra. Cavazzi da Montecúccolo's writings deform their image. Cavazzi's writings draw from a stockpile of images that circulated in European ideology to represent the 'Other' and make inferior all non-Europeans and non-Catholics in order to justify the slave trade and colonization. I employ Walter Mignolo's argument that the …

The Soldier As "I"-Witness In Novels By Barbusse And Ehni, Jane E. Evans Sep 2015

The Soldier As "I"-Witness In Novels By Barbusse And Ehni, Jane E. Evans

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The Soldier as 'I'-Witness in Novels by Barbusse and Ehni" Jane E. Evans discusses the representation of the French soldier in two first-person accounts based on life writing journals. The first, set during World War I, describes the simple ground soldier or troufion (Le Feu). The second, set during the Algerian War for Independence and later, sketches the life of the French army conscript. Three themes in Evans's analysis predominate: the narrators' reliance on life writing as sources of inspiration in both Henri Barbusse's 1916 Le Feu and René-Nicolas Ehni's 2002 Algérie roman, the narrator's …

Burrowing Owls, Pulex Irritans And Plague, James R. Belthoff, Scott A. Bernhardt, Christopher Ball, Michael Gregg, David H. Johnson, Rachel Ketterling, Emily Price, Juliette K. Tinker

Biology Faculty Publications

Western burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) are small, ground-dwelling owls ofwestern North America that frequent prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) towns and other grasslands. As they rely on rodent prey and occupy burrows once or concurrently inhabited by fossorialmammals, the owls often harbor fleas. We examined the potential role of fleas found onburrowing owls in plague dynamics by evaluating prevalence of Yersinia pestis in fleas and inowl blood. During 2012-2013 fleas and blood were collected from burrowing owls in portionsof five states with endemic plague: Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and South Dakota.Fleas were enumerated, taxonomically identified, pooled by nest and assayed for …

Human Functions, Machine Tools, And The Role Of The Analyst, Gordon R. Middleton Sep 2015

Human Functions, Machine Tools, And The Role Of The Analyst, Gordon R. Middleton

Journal of Strategic Security

In an era of rapidly increasing technical capability, the intelligence focus is often on the modes of collection and tools of analysis rather than the analyst themselves. Data are proliferating and so are tools to help analysts deal with the flood of data and the increasingly demanding timeline for intelligence production, but the role of the analyst in such a data-driven environment needs to be understood in order to support key management decisions (e.g., training and investment priorities).

This paper describes a model of the analytic process, and analyzes the roles played by humans and machine tools in each process …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mountain flood that causes landslide and other geological disasters can damage the fragile ecological environment in mountain areas. In this paper, threshold and distribution model of accumulated temperature based on snowmelt flood magnitude are designed in mountainous watershed. Meanwhile, input data for this model make use of ample reliable data that include remote sensing and so on. In detail, this model simulates the average watershed temperature by using the meteorologic re-analysis data of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and calculates the average snow depth by using hyperspectral remote sensing data. In addition, the model related data comprise long-term observation …

Injury In Aged Animals Robustly Activates Quiescent Olfactory Neural Stem Cells, Jessica H. Brann, Deandra Ellis, Benson Ku, Eleonora Spinazzi, Stuart Firestein

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

While the capacity of the olfactory epithelium (OE) to generate sensory neurons continues into middle age in mice, it is presumed that this regenerative potential is present throughout all developmental stages. However, little experimental evidence exists to support the idea that this regenerative capacity remains in late adulthood, and questions about the functionality of neurons born at these late stages remain unanswered. Here, we extend our previous work in the VNO to investigate basal rates of proliferation in the OE, as well as after olfactory bulbectomy, a commonly used surgical lesion. In addition, we show that the neural stem cell …
