Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

ABCC9 genetic polymorphisms are associated with increased risk for various human diseases including hippocampal sclerosis of aging. The main goals of this study were 1 > to detect the ABCC9 variants and define the specific 3′ untranslated region (3′UTR) for each variant in human brain, and 2 > to determine whether a polymorphism (rs704180) associated with risk for hippocampal sclerosis of aging pathology is also associated with variation in ABCC9 transcript expression and/or splicing. Rapid amplification of ABCC9 cDNA ends (3′RACE) provided evidence of novel 3′ UTR portions of ABCC9 in human brain. In silico and experimental studies were performed focusing on …

Gone Fishing: Angling For An Answer To Asian Carp Migration After The Seventh Circuit's Refusal To Allow Hydrological Separation, Matthew A. Kratky Sep 2015

Gone Fishing: Angling For An Answer To Asian Carp Migration After The Seventh Circuit's Refusal To Allow Hydrological Separation, Matthew A. Kratky

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Asian carp are the latest addition to an extensive list of invasive species that pollutes American waterways. But unlike other prominent invasive species, Asian carp were intentionally brought into the United States to control algae growth in Southern aquaculture ponds. Torrential flooding provided an avenue for these fish to escape into the Mississippi River, and since then, the Asian Carp have migrated northward into the Illinois River and the Chicago Area Waterway System. Along the way, their incessant hunger and prolific breeding habits have enabled Asian carp to monopolize food sources to the detriment of native fish populations. Asian carp …

Interpretation As Epieikeia: Aristotelian Ethics As A Paradigm For Hans-Georg Gadamer's Philosophical Hermeneutics, David Volfe Sep 2015

Interpretation As Epieikeia: Aristotelian Ethics As A Paradigm For Hans-Georg Gadamer's Philosophical Hermeneutics, David Volfe

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The present study is an attempt to examine the relationship between Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics―focusing on his magnum opus, Truth and Method (1960)―and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Though he patiently waits until two thirds of the book to explicitly make such a rapprochement, Gadamer unambiguously claims Aristotle's Ethics to provide no less than a “kind of model of the problems of hermeneutics”―a proximity which Gadamer locates specifically in the question of application (Anwendung) which, according to him, finds its foremost hermeneutic expression with Aristotle. Because Gadamer also claims to find in legal hermeneutics an exemplary instance of the question of application, …

Taxonomy Of The Snowden Disclosures, Margaret Hu Sep 2015

Taxonomy Of The Snowden Disclosures, Margaret Hu

Washington and Lee Law Review

This brief Essay offers a proposed taxonomy of the Snowden Disclosures. An informed discussion on the legality and constitutionality of the emerging cybersurveillance and mass dataveillance programs revealed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden necessitates the furtherance of cybersurveillance aptitude. This Essay contends, therefore, that a detailed examination of the Snowden disclosures requires not just a careful inquiry into the legal and constitutional framework that guides the oversight of these programs. A close interrogation also requires a careful inquiry into the big data architecture that guides them. This inquiry includes examining the underlying theories of data science and the rationales …

Iberian Theater And Performance, Christopher B. Swift Sep 2015

Iberian Theater And Performance, Christopher B. Swift

Publications and Research

Medieval Iberian theater and performance maintains a peculiar status within, and between, performance and medieval disciplines. In theater studies, medieval Iberia has received minimal scholarly attention, and standard theater history textbooks contain only traces of Iberian material, if any at all. Despite the existence of Catalonian and Castilian archival materials that indicate performance traditions unique to the peninsula, scholars of Spanish literature (outside of the notable exceptions below) generally view Iberian medieval theater as an anomaly. One of the main reasons for this situation is that Iberian theater has yet to emerge fully from traditional historiographic parameters predicated upon the …

On The "Poverty Of Responsibility": A Study Of The History Of Child Protection Law And Jurisprudence In Nova Scotia, Ilana Luther

PhD Dissertations

This thesis presents a history of child protection law and jurisprudence in Nova Scotia. The thesis begins by examining the development of the first child protection statute in Canada, the Nova Scotia Prevention and Punishment of Wrongs to Children Act in 1882. The Act was developed amidst a climate of reform in late-19th century Halifax, at the urging of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Act, along with a number of other pieces of “domestic relations” legislation at the time, was focused on protecting children in poverty. With the passing of the Act, the legislature not …

Genetic studies are recognized increasingly as important for understanding naturally occurring disease dynamics and are used to predict host genetic diversity and coevolutionary processes and to identify species composition in ecological communities. Tubifex tubifex, the definitive host of the whirling disease parasite Myxobolus cerebralis, comprises 6 known lineages that vary widely in parasite susceptibility. We used 16S ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA) to identify relationships among genetic variability of 3 oligochaete genera (T. tubifex, Rhyacodrilus spp., and Ilyodrilus spp.; Oligochaeta:Tubificidae), oligochaete assemblage composition, and the presence of whirling disease in 9 locations across 4 watersheds in Montana, …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Neurons in the embryonic and peripheral nervoussystem respond to injury by activating transcriptional programs supportive of axon growth, ultimately resulting in functional recovery. In contrast, neurons in the adult central nervous system (CNS) possess a limited capacity to regenerate axons after injury, fundamentally constraining repair. Activating pro-regenerative gene expression in CNS neurons is a promising therapeutic approach, but progress is hampered by incomplete knowledge of the relevant transcription factors. An emerging hypothesis is that factors implicated in cellular growth and motility outside the nervous system may also control axon growth in neurons. We therefore tested sixty-nine transcription factors, previously identified …

Platelet-Activating Factor Receptor Affects Food Intake And Body Weight, Wei Li, Thomas M. Mcintyre

Biomedical Sciences

“Let’s Move!” is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, Michelle Obama, dedicates to solving problems of obesity, which is growing in child. The life behaviors do affect obesity; however, the mechanistic insight in molecular level is still not clear. In this study, by continually monitoring mouse body weight under chow and high fat western diets as well as metabolic, physical activity and food intake behaviors assessed in a CLAMS Comprehensive Lab Animal Monitoring System, we demonstrated that the platelet-activating factor receptor (PTAFR) contributes to modification of life behaviors. PTAFR does not affect metabolism of ingested dietary fat and …

Slavery Then And Now: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade And Modern Day Human Trafficking: What Can We Learn From Our Past?, Stevie J. Swanson

Florida A & M University Law Review

Many have said that history repeats itself. Unfortunately, this is painfully true in the realm of modern day human trafficking. Human trafficking is a thirty-two billion-dollar-a-year industry, and at present, it is estimated that there are approximately twenty-seven million people enslaved worldwide. President Obama has stated that human trafficking is modern day slavery. Both sex trafficking and labor trafficking are forms of modern day slavery that are present throughout America and the world. In America, sex trafficking appears online, and at pseudo-massage parlors, truckstops, residential brothels, strip-clubs, hotels and motels, and on city streets. Labor trafficking in America includes domestic …

Florida's Downtowns Are Free To Grow Local Broccoli…And Chickens (Sometimes), Sidney F. Ansbacher, Michael T. Olexa, Kathleen Maurer

Florida A & M University Law Review

The United States Supreme Court in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (Sebelius), famously invoked broccoli to limit the scope of Commerce Clause. All of the Justices used broccoli as a plot device to further their respective arguments answering whether the individual mandate to buy health insurance was constitutional. This article discusses the other end of the economic spectrum – local. We explicate Florida’s local government regulations of urban planting, growing, and selling of broccoli, as well as other fruits, vegetables, and animals. This requires a history of urban agriculture and local zoning laws before we discuss current laws …

Enhancing Student Learning Through Proactive Feedback Based Adaptive Teaching For Engineering Courses, Danda B. Rawat, Chandra Bajracharya Sep 2015

Enhancing Student Learning Through Proactive Feedback Based Adaptive Teaching For Engineering Courses, Danda B. Rawat, Chandra Bajracharya

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a proactive anonymous feedback based adaptive teaching for enhancing student learning for engineering courses. In conventional university teaching, typically, students come to the class and instructors lecture the material, assign home assignments, take exams, etc. After grading assignments or exams, the instructor provides feedback to students. Most of the time, students are reluctant to ask questions or ask instructor to revisit the topic which was already covered. However, there is no immediate anonymous feedback mechanism for each topic or class to notify the instructor about topics which are not clear to students. There are advantages that enhance …

Drosophila Eye Model To Study Neuroprotective Role Of Creb Binding Protein (Cbp) In Alzheimer’S Disease, Timothy Cutler, Ankita Sarkar, Michael Moran, Andrew Steffensmeier, Oorvashi Roy Puli, Greg Mancini, Meghana Tare

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The progressive neurodegenerative disorder Alzheimer’s disease (AD) manifests as loss of cognitive functions, and finally leads to death of the affected individual. AD may result from accumulation of amyloid plaques. These amyloid plaques comprising of amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) polypeptides results from the improper cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the brain. The Aβ42 plaques have been shown to disrupt the normal cellular processes and thereby trigger abnormal signaling which results in the death of neurons. However, the molecular-genetic mechanism(s) responsible for Aβ42 mediated neurodegeneration is yet to be fully understood.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We have utilized Gal4/UAS system to …

Just Jocking? An Exploration Of How 10-12 Year Old Children Experience An Equine Assisted Learning Programme, In A Deis School, In Limerick City., Kate Bronwyn Jones

Dissertations

Throughout Irish history, the horse has had many uses. In modern Ireland, some communities have harnessed the power of the horse to deliver a range of social interventions. However, at present, there is little published research about equine assisted programmes in Ireland. The main intention of this research project is to explore how 10-12 year old children, from a DEIS primary school in Limerick city, experience an Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programme facilitated by the local Garda Youth Diversion Project (GYDP). The project aims to be child centred, emergent and participatory, in keeping with the United Nations Convention on the …

While the management of biological invasions is often characterized by a series of single-specieg decisions, invasive species exist within larger food webs. These biotic interactions can alter the impact of control/eradication programs and may cause suppression efforts to inadvertently facilitate invasion spread and impact. We document the rapid replacement of the invasive Bemisia Middle East-Asia Minor I (MEAM1) cryptic biotype by the cryptic Mediterranean (MED) biotype throughout China and demonstrate that MED is more tolerant of insecticides and a better vector of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) than MEAMJ. While MEAM1 usually excludes MED under natural conditions, insecticide application …

Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz Sep 2015

Rulers And The Wolf: Archbishop Wulfstan, Anglo-Saxon Kings, And The Problems Of His Present, Nicholas Schwartz

English Language and Literature ETDs

Until now, Wulfstan, Archbishop of Yorks relationship to and view of Anglo-Saxon kingship has never been comprehensively examined. The lack of attention this topic has received is a glaring omission in Wulfstan scholarship. Wulfstan worked under two kings, \xc6thelred and Cnut, and he had an interest in Edgar that has long been recognized. In response to Wulfstan's career under these kings and his interest in Edgar, scholars have been far too ready to assume that the archbishop's view of kingship was straightforward. It has too long been taken for granted that Wulfstan operated under Cnut in the same manner as …

Dietary Intake And Bio-Activation Of Nitrite And Nitrate In Newborn Infants, Jesica Ann Jones Sep 2015

Dietary Intake And Bio-Activation Of Nitrite And Nitrate In Newborn Infants, Jesica Ann Jones

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nitrate and nitrite are commonly thought of as inert end products of nitric oxide (NO) oxidation, possibly carcinogenic food additives, or well-water contaminants. However, recent studies have shown that nitrate and nitrite play an important role in cardiovascular and gastrointestinal homeostasis through conversion back into NO via a physiological system involving enterosalivary recirculation, bacterial nitrate reductases, and enzyme-catalyzed or acidic reduction of nitrite to NO. The diet is a key source of nitrate in adults; however, infants ingest significantly less nitrate due to low concentrations in breast milk. In the mouth, bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite, which has gastro-protective effects. …

Recreational Diving And Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) In A Marine Protected Area, Christian Hayes

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recreational diving is a form of ecotourism that is traditionally viewed as an ecologically sustainable activity prompting increased awareness for the marine environment. Recent studies, however, indicate that recreational diving may cause unintended behavioral changes in marine macrofauna. Few studies, however, have specifically investigated the effects of recreational diving on sea turtles. I conducted in-water observations and turtle sightings surveys from June 9 to August 21, 2014, in Roatán, Honduras, to determine if differences in dive site use and diver behavior alter the behavior of critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in a marine protected area (MPA). I found …

Clinical Essentials For Obesity, Ryan Garry Montanari

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In order for health psychologists to be prepared to address obesity, foundational information on obesity is required. Psychologists have the potential to assist with lifestyle and behavioral modifications, especially when weight problems are tied to mental health conditions. Furthermore, clinicians can focus on triggers for unhealthy choices, in addition to unhealthy beliefs about eating and weight. The purpose of this research project is to provide health psychologists with essential information on the scope, associated risks, and evidence-based interventions for obesity so that they will be better prepared to deliver effective treatments.

Music Listening As Therapy, David M. Rosenblatt Sep 2015

Music Listening As Therapy, David M. Rosenblatt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Music is a universal phenomenon and is a real, physical thing. It is processed in neural circuits that overlap with language circuits, and it exerts cognitive, emotional, and physiological effects on humans. Many of those effects are therapeutic, such as reduced symptoms of physical and mental ailments. Music is the result of the elements rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, and form. Rhythm is the focus of pop music, and melody is the focus of classical music. The mind perceives and organizes music in learned, consistent ways in order to generate predictions and extract meaning. There are perceptual laws and information …

Manner Of Apical Meristem Destruction Affects Growth, Reproduction, And Survival Of Sea Oxeye Daisy, Lisa S. Spirko, Anthony M. Rossi

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Although herbivory may result in plant death, the mode and timing of damage may produce variable wounding responses in the attacked plant. In this study, effects of different types of apical meristem damage on growth and performance of sea oxeye daisy Borrichia frutescens (L.) DC were compared. Damage involved either clipping or galling of the apical meristem by the gall midge Asphondylia borrichiae Rossi and Strong. Apical dominance was relatively weak before flowering and stronger in short ramets that were shaded by taller neighbors later in the season. Clipped ramets delayed sprouting new stems, and galled ramets sprouted new stems …
