Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dry eye is a common disorder caused by inadequate hydration of the ocular surface that results in disruption of barrier function. The homeostatic protein clusterin (CLU) is prominent at fluid-tissue interfaces throughout the body. CLU levels are reduced at the ocular surface in human inflammatory disorders that manifest as severe dry eye, as well as in a preclinical mouse model for desiccating stress that mimics dry eye. Using this mouse model, we show here that CLU prevents and ameliorates ocular surface barrier disruption by a remarkable sealing mechanism dependent on attainment of a critical all-or-none concentration. When the CLU level …

An Elusive Dream? Religious Freedom & The Reign Of God, Anthony E. Clark Phd Sep 2015

An Elusive Dream? Religious Freedom & The Reign Of God, Anthony E. Clark Phd

Lectures

This first public lecture as Lindaman Endowed Chair shall center on the topics of religious freedom and the reign of God, which at first appear to be contradictory ideas. How can the human person be truly free while also being confined to obedience to God’s will and design for Creation? The talk will explore Christian understandings of the reign of God in a world seemingly torn apart by sectarianism and religious difference, focusing on the historical legacy of China vis-à-vis religious freedom and the putative separation of Church and State.

Narrating Jane: Telling The Story Of An Early African American Mormon Woman, Quincy D. Newell Sep 2015

Narrating Jane: Telling The Story Of An Early African American Mormon Woman, Quincy D. Newell

Arrington Annual Lecture

Jane Elizabeth Manning James was among the early African American converts to Mormonism. After joining the church in the early 1840s, James remained a faithful member until her death in Salt Lake City in 1908. Although she was well-known among church members during her lifetime, James was largely forgotten after her death. However, beginning in about 2000, there was a significant up-tick in non-academic LDS discourse about James. Dr. Newell will analyze this recent talk about Jane, showing that she has become a way for Latter-day Saints to talk about both gender and race in ways that create a usable …

Improving Operator Situational Awareness With Wide Area Geographic Data View Displays Of The Electric Power Grid, Esa M. Rantanen, Limor Hochberg, Diego Klabjan, Mingyang Di Sep 2015

Improving Operator Situational Awareness With Wide Area Geographic Data View Displays Of The Electric Power Grid, Esa M. Rantanen, Limor Hochberg, Diego Klabjan, Mingyang Di

Articles

To reduce clutter on wide-area geographic data view displays of electric power systems, substations in geographically compact areas should be spread out and line overlaps and intersections minimized. Such pat- terns optimized with respect to given constraints can be modeled as a multicommodity flow problem. Due to the size of the developed model, we developed two clustering-based iterative algorithms to decompose the global network into smaller regions and then iteratively solve the subproblem in each region by readjusting some values. Three solutions were selected for experimental evaluation. The experimental results were somewhat inconclusive, due to naïve participants, simple task, and …

Effect Of Dexamethasone Prodrug On Inflamed Temporomandibular Joints In Juvenile Rats., Mitchell Knudsen, Matthew Bury, Callie Holwegner, Adam L. Reinhardt, Fang Yuan, Yijia Zhang, Peter J. Giannini, David B. Marx, Dong Wang, Richard A. Reinhardt

Journal Articles: College of Dentistry

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) often causes inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and has been treated with both systemic and intra-articular steroids, with concerns about effects on growing bones. In this study, we evaluated the impact of a macromolecular prodrug of dexamethasone (P-DEX) with inflammation-targeting potential applied systemically or directly to the TMJ.

METHODS: Joint inflammation was initiated by injecting two doses of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) at 1-month intervals into the right TMJs of 24 growing Sprague-Dawley male rats (controls on left side). Four additional rats were not manipulated. With the second CFA injection, animals received (1) 5 …

The Event At Rebecca Farm 2015, Megan Schultz

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

This study was conducted for Montana Equestrian Events, Inc. to provide insight into the characteristics of attendees to the fourteenth annual The Event at Rebecca Farm. Paper surveys were completed by 473 attendees of the event. Results show that 60% of attendees were residents of Montana and of those 29% came from outside of Flathead County. Visitors spent an average of 6.29 nights in the Flathead Valley area. More people spent money on hotel/motel, restaurant/bar, and gasoline while visiting the area than other spending categories. Respondents to the survey reported total spending of $261,020 in the Flathead Valley. Results provide …

Does Gender Matter? Human Elephant Conflict In Sri Lanka: A Gendered Analysis Of Human Elephant Conflict And Natural Resource Management In A Rural Sri Lankan Village, Katherine Eileen Griffin Sep 2015

Does Gender Matter? Human Elephant Conflict In Sri Lanka: A Gendered Analysis Of Human Elephant Conflict And Natural Resource Management In A Rural Sri Lankan Village, Katherine Eileen Griffin

Dissertations and Theses

This study is a gendered analysis of natural resource management at the local scale of a poor rural Sri Lankan village in a conservation buffer zone. This village experiences destruction of forests and human elephant conflict. The objective of this study is to gain an in-depth knowledge of residents' use and understandings of environmental resources, and to investigate if gender helps shape these factors. This study relies on a social sustainability conceptual framework. It tracks participation of local women and men in natural resource management, and in conservation within and outside of the Bibile community. Local nongovernmental organizations focus on …

Practice Changes Beta Power At Rest And Its Modulation During Movement In Healthy Subjects But Not In Patients With Parkinson's Disease, Clara Moisello, Daniella Blanco, Jing Lin, Priya Panday, Simon P. Kelly, Angelo Quartarone, Alessandro Di Rocco, Chiara Cirelli, Giulio Tononi, M. Felice Ghilardi

Publications and Research

Abstract Background PD (Parkinson's disease) is characterized by impairments in cortical plasticity, in beta frequency at rest and in beta power modulation during movement (i.e., event‐related ERS [synchronization] and ERD [desynchronization]). Recent results with experimental protocols inducing long‐term potentiation in healthy subjects suggest that cortical plasticity phenomena might be reflected by changes of beta power recorded with EEG during rest. Here, we determined whether motor practice produces changes in beta power at rest and during movements in both healthy subjects and patients with PD. We hypothesized that such changes would be reduced in PD. Methods We thus recorded EEG in …
