Recent evidence has determined a phenotypic and functional heterogeneity for macrophage populations. This plasticity of macrophage function has been related to specific properties of subsets (M1 and M2) of these cells in inflammation, adaptive immune responses and resolution of tissue destructive processes. This investigation hypothesized that targeted alterations in the distribution of macrophage phenotypes in aged individuals, and with periodontitis would be skewed towards M1 inflammatory macrophages in gingival tissues. The study used a non-human primate model to evaluate gene expression profiles as footprints of macrophage variation in healthy and periodontitis gingival tissues from animals 3-23 years of age and …

Building on a series of ground breaking reviews that first defined and drew attention to emerging infectious diseases (EID), the 'convergence model' was proposed to explain the multifactorial causality of disease emergence. The model broadly hypothesizes disease emergence is driven by the co-incidence of genetic, physical environmental, ecological, and social factors. We developed and tested a model of the emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 based on suspected convergence factors that are mainly associated with land-use change. Building on previous geospatial statistical studies that identified natural and human risk factors associated with urbanization, we added new factors to …

An Animal Model Of Differential Genetic Risk For Methamphetamine Intake, Tamara J. Phillips, Shkelzen Shabani Sep 2015

An Animal Model Of Differential Genetic Risk For Methamphetamine Intake, Tamara J. Phillips, Shkelzen Shabani

Peer Reviewed Articles

The question of whether genetic factors contribute to risk for methamphetamine (MA) use and dependence has not been intensively investigated. Compared to human populations, genetic animal models offer the advantages of control over genetic family history and drug exposure. Using selective breeding, we created lines of mice that differ in genetic risk for voluntary MA intake and identified the chromosomal addresses of contributory genes. A quantitative trait locus was identified on chromosome 10 that accounts for more than 50% of the genetic variance in MA intake in the selected mouse lines. In addition, behavioral and physiological screening identified differences corresponding …

A Gardening Lesson From The Natural World: How Forest Ecosystems Can Provide For Us, Megan Gladbach Sep 2015

A Gardening Lesson From The Natural World: How Forest Ecosystems Can Provide For Us, Megan Gladbach

JCCC Honors Journal

Though agriculture of the past lead to the rise of civilization, degenerative agricultural practices today may very well lead to the demise of civilization. Fortunately, nature offers a solution. By studying and manipulating the inner workings of ecological systems for the gardeners’ benefit, resilient gardens, specifically forest gardens, can be created. This paper explores processes that occur in the natural world such as the hydrologic and nitrogen cycles, biotic interactions, and succession and how to mimic them. Concluding with a real-world example, this paper demonstrates that gardens can thrive with minimal input while still providing an abundant variety of food, …

Authenticity In Music Performance: Evidence From The Singer-Songwriter Community, Jon Littlefield Sep 2015

Authenticity In Music Performance: Evidence From The Singer-Songwriter Community, Jon Littlefield

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Experiencing music provides a unique lens to study identity. The alienation resulting from increased technological mediation in both music production and consumption might drive consumption (Potter 2010), hence authenticity may be an appealing positioning strategy for marketers. Singer-songwriters, for example, write and perform their own music with minimal technological interference. This represents a direct connection with the musician that we characterize as more historically authentic (Thornton 1996), however this characterization is not universal. In this paper, I seek to gather insight into the myriad expressions of authenticity within the music consumption environment by detailing a study of performance musicians.

Rembrandt Versus Van Gogh: A Qualitative Contrast Study Applying A Visual Arts Valutation Model, Rene Desborde, Kimball P. Marshall

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Few marketing scholars have explored the field of fine arts marketing despite its significance as an area of economic activity and human creativity. Billions of dollars change hands annually in the worldwide visual fine arts industry (Velthuis, 2007; Clark and Flaherty, 2002), defined here to include various paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. This lack of academic attention might be because marketing scholars perceive that issues related to fine arts have little to do with marketing. It could also be that the unique characteristics of fine arts marketing are thought not to lend themselves to a traditional analytical approach to explain a …

E-Book Rights: Advocacy In Action, Katy Gabrio, Whitney Murphy

Charleston Library Conference

E‐book rights advocacy efforts began nearly from the moment the format appeared. The topics have evolved over time but significant issues and the need for ongoing discussion and negotiation remain. To this end, Macalester College published an E‐Book Advocacy Statement in 2013. Since then several libraries have signed on. Most importantly, productive conversations with e‐book providers and vendors have ensued. These conversations have led to a better understanding of the library, publisher, and e‐book provider points of view as well as helped strengthen library/vendor relationships that are rooted in a willingness to deeply engage on these topics while appreciating one …

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem As Predictors Of Reactive And Proactive Aggression In Adolescent Boys And Girls, Maya Suter, Sebastien Urben, Sandrine Pihet, Cybele Bertoni, Jill De Ridder, Philippe Stephan

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

This study aims at examining gender differences and their association with implicit and explicit self-esteem (SE), and reactive and proactive aggression in adolescents. Hundred and eighteen adolescents (60 boys and 58 girls) performed the Implicit Association Test assessing implicit SE. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale was used to measure explicit SE. Reactive and proactive aggression were assessed with the self-report Reactive and Proactive Aggression Scale. Results showed that girls characterized by both low explicit and implicit SE (insecure SE), or by high explicit but low implicit SE (defensive SE), showed more reactive aggression than girls reporting high explicit and implicit SE …

The Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot (EABH) has the highest concentration of biodiversity in tropical Africa, yet few studies have investigated recent historical diversification processes in EABH lineages. Herein, we analyze restriction-site associated DNA-sequences (RAD-Seq) to study recent historical processes in co-distributed mouse (Hylomyscus) and shrew (Sylvisorex) species complexes, with an aim to better determine how historical paleoenvironmental processes might have contributed to the EABH’s high diversity. We analyzed complete SNP matrices of > 50,000 RAD loci to delineate populations, reconstruct the history of isolation and admixture, and discover geographic patterns of genetic partitioning. These analyses demonstrate that persistently unsuitable habitat may …

Off-Target V(D)J Recombination Drives Lymphomagenesis And Is Escalated By Loss Of The Rag2 C Terminus., Martina Mijušković, Yi-Fan Chou, Vered Gigi, Cory R Lindsay, Olga Shestova, Susanna M Lewis, David B Roth Sep 2015

Off-Target V(D)J Recombination Drives Lymphomagenesis And Is Escalated By Loss Of The Rag2 C Terminus., Martina Mijušković, Yi-Fan Chou, Vered Gigi, Cory R Lindsay, Olga Shestova, Susanna M Lewis, David B Roth

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Genome-wide analysis of thymic lymphomas from Tp53(-/-) mice with wild-type or C-terminally truncated Rag2 revealed numerous off-target, RAG-mediated DNA rearrangements. A significantly higher fraction of these errors mutated known and suspected oncogenes/tumor suppressor genes than did sporadic rearrangements (p < 0.0001). This tractable mouse model recapitulates recent findings in human pre-B ALL and allows comparison of wild-type and mutant RAG2. Recurrent, RAG-mediated deletions affected Notch1, Pten, Ikzf1, Jak1, Phlda1, Trat1, and Agpat9. Rag2 truncation substantially increased the frequency of off-target V(D)J recombination. The data suggest that interactions between Rag2 and a specific chromatin modification, H3K4me3, support V(D)J recombination fidelity. Oncogenic effects of off-target rearrangements created by this highly regulated recombinase may need to be considered in design of site-specific nucleases engineered for genome modification.

Injury-In-Fact In Chilling Effect Challenges To Public University Speech Codes, Jennifer L. Bruneau Sep 2015

Injury-In-Fact In Chilling Effect Challenges To Public University Speech Codes, Jennifer L. Bruneau

Catholic University Law Review

Campus speech codes began to spring up on university campuses during the 1980s and continue to operate today. The codes regulate various forms of arguably offensive speech, including speech regarding race, gender, sexual orientation, ideology, views, and political affiliation. Numerous litigants have challenged the chilling effect these policies have on student and faculty speech, but in cases where the challenged code has not yet been enforced, some courts find that the plaintiff has not met the “injury-in-fact” requirement for Article III standing. The Supreme Court has not ruled on standing requirements in speech code challenges and lower courts are divided. …
