Canadian Constitutional Identities, Eric M. Adams Oct 2015

Canadian Constitutional Identities, Eric M. Adams

Dalhousie Law Journal

Constitutions are stories nations tell about themselves. Despite the famous declaration in the Constitution Act, 1867 that the "Provinces ofCanada...Desire...a Constitution similar in Principle to that of the United Kingdom," most of Canada's constitutional history can be understood as the search for a distinctly Canadian constitutional identity Canadians have always looked to their constitutional instruments to both reflect and produce a particular vision of the nation and its citizens. This article focuses on the search for Canada s constitutional identity during its first century as a nation, from Confederation until the 1960s. Drawing on a varied array of sources and …

Inequality And Identity At Work, Jennifer Koshan Oct 2015

Inequality And Identity At Work, Jennifer Koshan

Dalhousie Law Journal

A clinic at the University of Calgary law school in 2014 worked with unions and workers'rights groups to develop constitutionalchallenges to the historic exclusion of farm workers from labour and employment legislation in Alberta. After exploring arguments under sections 2(d), 7 and 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we concluded that, based on the existing jurisprudence, the equality rights arguments under section 15 were the weakest. This article explores what is lost when we fail to recognize the identity-based harms that flow from government violations of equality rights. It considers the nature of these harms, why they …

When It Comes To Standing, Two Legs Are Better Than Four, Kelsey Kobil Oct 2015

When It Comes To Standing, Two Legs Are Better Than Four, Kelsey Kobil

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Animal rights activists are currently filing lawsuits naming animals as plaintiffs hoping that courts will grant animals legal personhood status and standing to file lawsuits on their own behalf. Currently, animals are designated as property in the United States. If courts grant animals legal personhood status, animals would no longer be classified as property, but instead would hold the same legal rights as humans.

Several courts have grappled with the issue of granting animals standing to file lawsuits, and--other than a Ninth Circuit decision that was later explicitly dismissed as dicta by the same circuit-all have declined to do so. …

Before And Beyond Anticipatory Intelligence: Assessing The Potential For Crowdsourcing And Intelligence Studies, Alexander Halman Oct 2015

Before And Beyond Anticipatory Intelligence: Assessing The Potential For Crowdsourcing And Intelligence Studies, Alexander Halman

Journal of Strategic Security

Crowdsourcing is a new tool for businesses, academics, and now intelligence analysts. Enabled by recent technology, crowdsourcing allows researchers to harness the wisdom of crowds and provide recommendations and insight into complex problems. This paper examines the potential benefits and limitations of crowdsourcing for intelligence analysis and the intelligence community beyond its primary use: anticipatory intelligence. The author constructs a model and compares it to existing crowdsourcing theories in business, information science, and public policy. Finally, he offers advice for intelligence analysis and public policy.

All Propaganda Is Dangerous, But Some Are More Dangerous Than Others: George Orwell And The Use Of Literature As Propaganda, Samantha Senn Oct 2015

All Propaganda Is Dangerous, But Some Are More Dangerous Than Others: George Orwell And The Use Of Literature As Propaganda, Samantha Senn

Journal of Strategic Security

The true battles of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union were fought on the ideological front: pitting democracy and capitalism against totalitarianism and communism. The Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was formed in the late 1940s to help combat the spread of Communism across Europe and in the United States. Part of the “psychological warfare” included the use of propaganda. Around the same time, British author George Orwell had recently published Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Both novels, due to the anti-Communist overtones, were adopted by the OPC …

Effects Of Light On Riboflavin And Ascorbic Acid In Freshly Expressed Human Milk, Jimi Francis, Darby Dickton Oct 2015

Effects Of Light On Riboflavin And Ascorbic Acid In Freshly Expressed Human Milk, Jimi Francis, Darby Dickton

Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Millions of dollars each year is spent funding dairy research to better understand every aspect of milk processing, storage, handling, and shelf life. The dairy industry has shown that in animal milks vitamin C is photo-oxidized when exposed to light, which can cause a cascade of other nutrients that may be affected. Expressed human breast milk has had limited research published, mainly recommendations for storage duration secondary to bacterial growth, with scant research on nutrient quality during handling compared to the animal models. In this study, freshly expressed human milk was placed in containers of varying color/UV sensitivity and exposed …

An Insight Into The Functional Role Of Thioredoxin Reductase, A Selenoprotein, In Maintaining Normal Native Microbiota In The Gulf Coast Tick (Ambylomma Maculatum), Khemraj Budachetri, Shahid Karim

Faculty Publications

Tick selenoproteins have been associated with antioxidant activity in ticks. Thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), also a selenoprotein, belongs to the pyridine nucleotide‐disulphide oxidoreductase family of proteins and is an important antioxidant. Molecular interactions between native microbiota and tick hosts have barely been investigated to date. In this study, we determined the functional role of TrxR in tick feeding and in maintenance of the native microbial community. TrxR transcript levels remained high and microbial load was reduced throughout tick attachment to the vertebrate host. RNA interference (RNAi) showed that depletion of TrxR activity did not interfere with tick haematophagy or phenotype but …

Trash Talk: Interpreting Morality And Disorder In Negev/Naqab Landscapes, Emily Mckee Oct 2015

Trash Talk: Interpreting Morality And Disorder In Negev/Naqab Landscapes, Emily Mckee

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In contexts of land conflict and deep social divisions, evaluations of dirty and disordered landscapes carry social and political weight. This article employs a “political dwelling” perspective in southern Israel to examine how links between Bedouin character, litter and disorder, and lawlessness have become widespread, even naturalized, among many government officials and Jewish residents and even some Bedouin Arab residents. Contemporary trash talk draws on, but simultaneously masks, a history of state-building projects that employed Orientalist evaluations of order and disorder and segregationist approaches to development. While this masking of social construction is a property of all symbolically powerful social …

Effects Of Adipocyte Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Deficiency On Pcb-Induced Disruption Of Glucose Homeostasis In Lean And Obese Mice, Nicki A. Baker, Robin Shoemaker, Victoria English, Nika Larian, Manjula Sunkara, Andrew J. Morris, Mary Walker, Frederique Yiannikouris, Lisa A. Cassis Oct 2015

Effects Of Adipocyte Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Deficiency On Pcb-Induced Disruption Of Glucose Homeostasis In Lean And Obese Mice, Nicki A. Baker, Robin Shoemaker, Victoria English, Nika Larian, Manjula Sunkara, Andrew J. Morris, Mary Walker, Frederique Yiannikouris, Lisa A. Cassis

Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) promote adipocyte inflammation and impair glucose homeostasis in lean mice. The diabetes-promoting effects of lipophilic PCBs have been observed only during weight loss in obese mice. The molecular mechanisms linking PCB exposures to impaired glucose metabolism are unclear.

OBJECTIVES: In this study we tested the hypothesis that coplanar PCBs act at adipocyte aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhRs) to promote adipose inflammation and impair glucose homeostasis in lean mice and in obese mice during weight loss.

METHODS AND RESULTS: PCB-77 administration impaired glucose and insulin tolerance in LF (low fat diet)-fed control (AhRfl/fl) mice …
