An Incremental Phylogenetic Tree Algorithm Based On Repeated Insertions Of Species, Peter Revesz, Zhiqiang Li Oct 2015

An Incremental Phylogenetic Tree Algorithm Based On Repeated Insertions Of Species, Peter Revesz, Zhiqiang Li

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In this paper, we introduce a new phylogenetic tree algorithm that generates phylogenetic trees by repeatedly inserting species one-by-one. The incremental phylogenetic tree algorithm can work on proteins or DNA sequences. Computer experiments show that the new algorithm is better than the commonly used UPGMA and Neighbor Joining algorithms.

Unsettling Genocide Studies At The Eleventh Conference Of The International Association Of Genocide Scholars, July 16-19, 2014, Winnipeg-Canada, Andrew Woolford

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

What is the purpose of a genocide conference and in what ways might such a conference "unsettle" us and contribute to a broader decolonizing project, in genocide studies and beyond? This summary of the Eleventh Conference of the International Association of Genocide Scholars at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada examines some of the disruptions and connections that arose and contributed to the vitality of our meetings.

Certificates Of Confidentiality: Protecting Human Subject Research Data In Law And Practice, Leslie E. Wolf, Mayank J. Patel, Brett A. Tarver, Jeffrey L. Austin, Lauren A. Dame, Laura M. Beskow

Faculty Publications By Year

The federal Certificate of Confidentiality plays an important role in research on sensitive topics by authorizing researchers to refuse to disclose identifiable research data in response to subpoenas in any legal setting. However, there is little known about how effective Certificates are in practice. This article draws on our legal and empirical research on this topic to fill this information gap. It includes a description of the purpose of Certificates, their legislative and regulatory history, and a summary of the few reported and unreported cases that have dealt with Certificates. In addition, we outline other statutory confidentiality protections, compare them …

Wildfire Disturbance And Productivity As Drivers Of Plant Species Diversity Across Spatial Scales, Laura A. Burkle, Jonathan A. Myers, R Travis Belote Oct 2015

Wildfire Disturbance And Productivity As Drivers Of Plant Species Diversity Across Spatial Scales, Laura A. Burkle, Jonathan A. Myers, R Travis Belote

Biology Faculty Research

Wildfires influence many temperate terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. Historical environmental heterogeneity created by wildfires has been altered by human activities and will be impacted by future climate change. Our ability to predict the impact of wildfire-created heterogeneity on biodiversity is limited because few studies have investigated variation in community composition (beta-diversity) in response to fire. Wildfires may influence beta-diversity through several ecological mechanisms. First, high-severity fires may decrease beta-diversity by homogenizing species composition when they create landscapes dominated by disturbance-tolerant or rapidly colonizing species. In contrast, mixed-severity fires may increase beta-diversity by creating mosaic landscapes containing habitats that support species with …

Beyond The Visiting Room: A Defense Counsel Challenge To Conditions In Pretrial Confinement, Amber Baylor Oct 2015

Beyond The Visiting Room: A Defense Counsel Challenge To Conditions In Pretrial Confinement, Amber Baylor

Faculty Scholarship

Defense attorneys are well acquainted with the ill-considered and extreme use of solitary confinement in local jails. Isolation is one of many problems clients face while locked up in jail awaiting trial. Other common conditions of pretrial confinement include lack of mental health treatment, inadequate medical care, violence from corrections staff, and lack of protection from the violence of others. "Owing time", a recently dismantled practice, is just one example of jails' frivolous use of extreme isolation practices. At times, youth in the juvenile facility at Rikers were placed in solitary so often that there was a waitlist at the …

GabaB Receptors Couple To GαQ To Mediate Increases In Voltage-Dependent Calcium Current During Development, Andrew S. Karls, Michelle Mynlieff Oct 2015

GabaB Receptors Couple To GαQ To Mediate Increases In Voltage-Dependent Calcium Current During Development, Andrew S. Karls, Michelle Mynlieff

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Metabotropic GABAB receptors are known to modulate the activity of voltage-dependent calcium channels. Previously, we have shown that GABAB receptors couple to a non-Gi/o G-protein to enhance calcium influx through L-type calcium channels by activating protein kinase C in neonatal rat hippocampal neurons. In this study, the components of this signaling pathway were investigated further. Gαq was knocked down using morpholino oligonucleotides prior to examining GABAB-mediated enhancement of calcium influx. When Gαq G-proteins were eliminated using morpholino-mediated knockdown, the enhancing effects of the GABAB receptor agonist baclofen (10 μM) on calcium current …

An Irrigation Canal As A Lotic Mesocosm: Examining The Relationship Between Macroinvertebrate Benthos And Drift, Peter Koetsier, Luana M. M. Mccauley Oct 2015

An Irrigation Canal As A Lotic Mesocosm: Examining The Relationship Between Macroinvertebrate Benthos And Drift, Peter Koetsier, Luana M. M. Mccauley

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explored the notion that small canals could be good experimental proxies of streams by documenting physiochemical parameters and macroinvertebrate community development in an aridland irrigation canal. Further, we tested the production-compensation hypothesis between benthic invertebrates and invertebrates in the water column (drift). If the hypothesis held, invertebrates in the drift would be low until the benthic carrying capacity was reached; then organisms in the drift would increase as individuals avoided overcrowded conditions in the substrate. In a small, naturalized freshwater canal, we sampled macroinvertebrates in the substrate and those in the drift once every 2 weeks over 170 days …

Benefits Of Integrating Gardening Into Outdoor Education For Elementary Students, Madisen Hasenauer, Hannah Cobb

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s society. Future generations must be cognizant of impending environmental issues and have the wherewithal to actively address these societal tribulations. As future educators, it is our responsibility to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required in becoming an active part of repairing our planet. Society as a whole benefits from having an environmentally conscious citizen who can make an informed impact on social issues involving natural resources. A garden can be a powerful tool in promoting outdoor education, positive peer relationships, community, restoration, and sustainability. We propose teachers with access …

Motile Cryptofaunal Invertebrate Assemblages In Catalina Island's Rhodolith Beds In Relation To Physical Structure And Live Rhodoliths, Kristin Meagher Robinson Oct 2015

Motile Cryptofaunal Invertebrate Assemblages In Catalina Island's Rhodolith Beds In Relation To Physical Structure And Live Rhodoliths, Kristin Meagher Robinson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Rhodoliths (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) are unattached, branching, calcareous red algae that are important foundation species in near shore marine systems. Aggregations, or beds, produce habitat that is a mixture of hard substrate and soft sediment supporting diverse assemblages of both crypto- and macrofauna. At Catalina Island, CA (33º44’55”N, 118º50’22”W), beds of relatively small rhodoliths were recently documented within several bays and coves. To better understand the associated community, this study describes the cryptofaunal invertebrate assemblages associated with live rhodolith (LR), dead rhodolith (DR) and sand (S) habitats within three sites (Cherry Cove, Isthmus Harbor, Avalon Harbor). Motile invertebrates (> 0.5 mm) …

Use Of High-Speed X Ray And Video To Analyze Distal Radius Fracture Pathomechanics., Christina Gutowski, Kurosh Darvish, Frederic E. Liss, Asif M. Ilyas, Christopher M. Jones

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The purpose of this study is to investigate the failure sequence of the distal radius during a simulated fall onto an outstretched hand using cadaver forearms and high-speed X ray and video systems. This apparatus records the beginning and propagation of bony failure, ultimately resulting in distal radius or forearm fracture. The effects of 3 different wrist guard designs are investigated using this system. Serving as a proof-of-concept analysis, this study supports this imaging technique to be used in larger studies of orthopedic trauma and protective devices and specifically for distal radius fractures.

Forest Diversity And Disturbance: Changing Influences And The Future Of Virginia’S Forests, Christine J. Small, James L. Chamberlain Oct 2015

Forest Diversity And Disturbance: Changing Influences And The Future Of Virginia’S Forests, Christine J. Small, James L. Chamberlain

Virginia Journal of Science

The Virginia landscape supports a remarkable diversity of forests, from maritime dune woodlands, swamp forests, and pine savannas of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, to post-agricultural pine-hardwood forests of the Piedmont, to mixed oak, mesophytic, northern hardwood, and high elevation spruce-fir forests across three mountain provinces in western parts of the state. Virginia’s forests also have been profoundly shaped by disturbance. Chestnut blight, hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, and other pests have caused declines or functional extirpation of foundation species. Invasive plants like multiflora rose, Oriental bittersweet, and Japanese stiltgrass threaten both disturbed and intact forests. Oaks and other fire-dependent …

Water Quality In The Río Pastaza Watershed A Comparative Study Of Ríos Topo, Zuñag, And Pastaza And The Impact Of The Topo Hydroelectric Project Using Macroinvertebrates As Bioindicators, Jesse Vega-Perkins Oct 2015

Water Quality In The Río Pastaza Watershed A Comparative Study Of Ríos Topo, Zuñag, And Pastaza And The Impact Of The Topo Hydroelectric Project Using Macroinvertebrates As Bioindicators, Jesse Vega-Perkins

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Ríos Zuñag, Pastaza, and Topo flow through one of the rainiest and water-rich places in Ecuador. Río Zuñag is a relatively small, pristine montane river and Río Pastaza is a relatively large, contaminated river that receives the untreated wastewater of many communities. Río Topo’s unique watershed and gradient allow it to be home to many plants that have adapted to its unique environment, including the hyperendemic liverwort Myriocolea irrorata. However, in recent years, all of the water of Río Topo has been sold by the state of Ecuador to be developed for hydroelectric projects (HEP). The first of these …
