Behavioral, Perceptual, And Neural Alterations In Sensory And Multisensory Function In Autism Spectrum Disorder., Sarah H Baum, Ryan A Stevenson, Mark T Wallace

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Although sensory processing challenges have been noted since the first clinical descriptions of autism, it has taken until the release of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in 2013 for sensory problems to be included as part of the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the diagnostic profile. Because sensory information forms the building blocks for higher-order social and cognitive functions, we argue that sensory processing is not only an additional piece of the puzzle, but rather a critical cornerstone for characterizing and understanding ASD. In this review we discuss what …

National Assessment Program : Ict Literacy Years 6 & 10 Report 2014, Julian Fraillon, Wolfram Schulz, Eveline Gebhardt, John Ainley

ICT - Digital Literacy

Literacy in information and communication technology (ICT) is critical to students as they progress through schooling and enter a world in which information technology will be ubiquitous. Work, health care, family finances, learning and social interaction will all depend on competence in ICT. To assess progress in this crucial part of student learning, ACARA conducts a National Assessment Program (NAP) aimed at measuring ICT literacy. Every three years since 2005, a sample of Year 6 and Year 10 students from across Australia have been tested to determine their ICT knowledge, understanding and skills and their ability to use ICT creatively, …

Asian Values-Swiss Values?, Elmar Holenstein Nov 2015

Asian Values-Swiss Values?, Elmar Holenstein

Swiss American Historical Society Review

For years one is reading of "Asian values." Traveling through Asia, one is rubbing one's eyes. The whole of Asia, from the Bosporus and Ural all the way to the Pacific Ocean, is thrown into one great pot, as if they all, Turkic peoples and Mongols, Arabs, Iranians and Malaysians as well as Chinese, Koreans and Japanese had been educated by Confucius. Business people as well as political scientists who tell us of "Asiatic values" are flying in twelve hours from Frankfurt and Zurich to Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Those shortcuts therefore?

Contaminant Source Management Options For Wellhead Protection, Victoria Nelson Nov 2015

Contaminant Source Management Options For Wellhead Protection, Victoria Nelson

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

Before regulations were introduced to protect the general public from waterborne illnesses, it was common for people to become sick and even die from contaminated drinking water. Many rivers and streams in the United States were so polluted that they were uninhabitable for wildlife and dangerous to human health. The pollution and contamination in the surface and groundwater caused a public out-cry for the government to step in and do something about the hazardous water conditions. As the U.S. government started regulating surface water, it realized that the main source of drinking water for half of the U.S. and 95% …

Cortical spreading depolarization (SD) is a slow self-propagating wave of mass cellular depolarization in brain tissue, thought to be the underlying cause of migraine scintillating scotoma and aura, and associated with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and termination of status epilepticus. The N-methyl-d-aspartate subtype of glutamate receptor (NMDAR), which gates influx of calcium and is an important trigger of long-term synaptic plasticity, is also a contributor to the initiation and propagation of SD. The current study tested the potential of pharmacological modulation of NMDAR activity through the obligatory co-agonist binding site, to suppress the initiation of SD, and modulate the effects …

Crossbreeding Strategies: Including Terminal Vs. Maternal Crosses, Robert L. Weaber Nov 2015

Crossbreeding Strategies: Including Terminal Vs. Maternal Crosses, Robert L. Weaber

Range Beef Cow Symposium

The dramatic changes and volatility cow-calf production system input costs and calf values have many producers wondering about the value of heterosis in today’s beef industry pricing structure. Many producers are seeking ways to improve cow-calf production efficiency and profitability. Profitability may be enhanced by increasing the volume of production (i.e. the pounds of calves you market) and/or the value of products you sell (improving quality). The reduction of production costs, and thus breakeven prices, can also improve profitability. Better yet, improving the input:output ratio should enhance profit. For commercial beef producers, the implementation of technologies and breeding systems that …

Managing Risk On The Average Sized Cow–Calf Operation, Wayne Fahsholtz Nov 2015

Managing Risk On The Average Sized Cow–Calf Operation, Wayne Fahsholtz

Range Beef Cow Symposium

It has been said that life happens. Usually that refers to circumstances that happen in one’s life or in the life of a ranching business. These circumstances can include weather events like drought, severe snow, floods and fire. There are a number of tools that can be used to reduce the risk that ranches incur. The proactive ranch leader will take steps to manage risks. It is an ongoing process and must occur every year in order for risk to be minimized. Workforce risk and succession must also be taken into account. Ranches that don’t take risk management steps are …

Feedlot And Carcass Data: Making “Cents” And Making Decisions, Julie Walker Nov 2015

Feedlot And Carcass Data: Making “Cents” And Making Decisions, Julie Walker

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Sixty-two percent of calves are sold within 30 days of weaning (47% at weaning; McBride and Mathews, 2011). In the last decade, marketing of finished animals has shifted to selling on value-based systems. In 2012, nearly three times more cattle were sold in a value-based system compared to a traditional cash method. However, those two marketing methods accounted for nearly equal percentages of cattle sold as recently as 2006 (Mike Kasten, RBCS 2013). Therefore, carcass merit is a larger driver of value today compared to when the majority of cattle were sold on a live weight basis. How are feeder …

Computational Characterization Of Exogenous Micrornas That Can Be Transferred Into Human Circulation, Jiang Shu, Kevin Chiang, Janos Zempleni, Juan Cui

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs have been long considered synthesized endogenously until very recent discoveries showing that human can absorb dietary microRNAs from animal and plant origins while the mechanism remains unknown. Compelling evidences of microRNAs from rice, milk, and honeysuckle transported to human blood and tissues have created a high volume of interests in the fundamental questions that which and how exogenous microRNAs can be transferred into human circulation and possibly exert functions in humans. Here we present an integrated genomics and computational analysis to study the potential deciding features of transportable microRNAs. Specifically, we analyzed all publicly available microRNAs, a total of …

Distinguished Student Work

In the world we live in today, many people live in urban or suburban areas. For this reason, residents of these metropolitan areas should be aware of the safety of the city they live in so they can take necessary precautions and educate youth about what actions are safe. In addition, judging the safety of a city allows the government of the city to analyze what factors and laws make other cities safer, and how they can replicate these conditions to make their city a safer place as well.

The Founding Of The Robert B. Daugherty Water For Food Institute At The University Of Nebraska

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Administrative Materials

University of Nebraska President J.B. Milliken drove to Omaha in to meet Robert Daugherty at his home. In the living room, the elder Daugherty was surrounded by Mogens Bay, his three sons and a covey of lawyers. Now 88 years old, the businessman had a reputation for being tough-minded and smart, a man who could intimidate, but also surprise with his ready sense of humor. In his long career, Daugherty had transformed agriculture and the rural landscape into the now familiar polka dot pattern, the signature of the center pivot irrigators Daugherty had popularized in the 1970s. He had started …

  • Wnlg. heifers when there are premiums
  • Bred yrlg. when there are premiums
  • Pay down debt, lower interest payments

Using Partial Confinement Systems For Beef Cattle Production, Karla Jenkins Nov 2015

Using Partial Confinement Systems For Beef Cattle Production, Karla Jenkins

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Summary

  • Energy density is the key to limit feeding
  • Lactation increases energy needs considerably
  • Consider early weaning options
  • Confined calves must be able to reach water and feed
  • Limit fed cows need ample bunk space and a consistent feeding routine
  • Each producer needs to evaluate their resources and system options to see what might work best
  • As prices change systems should be reevaluated

Understanding The Veterinary Feed Directive, Libby Bigler Nov 2015

Understanding The Veterinary Feed Directive, Libby Bigler

Why had the FDA developed the VFD?

  • Concern for antibiotic resistance associated with daily antibiotic use in animal feeds.
  • VFD allows vital feed antibiotic use in livestock to protect their health and well-being.
  • “Prevention”, “control” and “treatment” of bacterial diseases

What exactly is a VFD?

A written order (paper or electronic) by a licensed veterinarian in the course of their practice approving the use of a VFD medication.

Animal Health & Antibiotic Stewardship, Rob Eirich Nov 2015

Animal Health & Antibiotic Stewardship, Rob Eirich

Antimicrobial stewardship refers to coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials by promoting the selection of the optimal antimicrobial drug regimen, dose, duration of therapy, and route of administration.

Antimicrobial stewards seek to achieve optimal clinical outcomes related to antimicrobial use, minimize toxicity and other adverse events, reduce the costs of health care for infections, and limit the selection fr antimicrobial resistant strains.

Economically Relevant Traits And Selection Indices, Matt L. Spangler Nov 2015

Economically Relevant Traits And Selection Indices, Matt L. Spangler

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Sire selection should focus on that which is economical. This requires a true accounting of the traits that generate revenue or incur a cost within a specific beef cattle enterprise. Once the drivers of profit have been identified, sire selection should focus on the suite of traits that impact profitability. The use of bio-economic selection indices can dramatically reduce the complexity of multiple trait selection and aid in sire selection towards increased profitability. It is critical to use selection indices that match the intended production system. Using a terminal index in an enterprise that retains replacement heifers would not be …

Feed Efficiency In The Range Beef Cow: What Should We Be Looking Att?, H. H. "Trey" Patterson Nov 2015

Feed Efficiency In The Range Beef Cow: What Should We Be Looking Att?, H. H. "Trey" Patterson

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Beef cow efficiency is a critically important topic for range cow producers. Feed efficiency, or the ability to convert grazed forages into production, is obviously an important aspect of overall cow efficiency. The late Bob Taylor from CSU made the statement “profitable cattle are usually productive, but productive cattle are not always profitable” (Taylor, 1994). That is an inherently important concept in the efficiency discussion, as it leads us to question the important metrics in determining feed efficiency in the cow.
