P27 Drives Pi3k-Dependent Cancer Metastasis By Activating Emt Transcription Factors To Induce An Emt Program, Alexandra Besser

Open Access Dissertations

In normal cells, p27 regulates cell cycle and functions as an atypical tumor suppressor. Unlike typical tumor suppressors such as p16 and pRb, p27 gene deletions or mutations are rarely observed in human cancers. Instead, p27 is deregulated through either excess degradation or through key C-terminal phosphorylations, in human cancers. Phosphorylation at T157 or T198 by different PI3K effector kinases allows p27 to take on new binding partners and promote oncogenic transformation. This thesis addresses the functional contribution of T157 and T198-phosphorylated, deregulated p27 to cancer progression and metastasis. By studying the effects of a transfected cell cycle defective (CK-) …

Cancer cells are adept at invading, migrating to and colonizing on an organ away from its origin resulting in metastatic cancer. The process through which cancer cells colonize on a distant organ is known as metastasis. It is estimated that about 90% of the deaths associated with cancer are attributed to metastasis, yet the fundamental mechanisms of cancer metastasis are unknown. Several cancers are known to metastasize to bone. Of these, the most prolific are prostate, breast and colon cancers. Molecular, microstructural and physiological interactions between the metastatic cancer cells and bone microenvironment have been shown to be suggestive of …

Working memory training can improve the performance of tasks that were not trained. Whether auditory-motor integration for voice control can benefit from working memory training, however, remains unclear. The present event-related potential (ERP) study examined the impact of working memory training on the auditory-motor processing of vocal pitch. Trained participants underwent adaptive working memory training using a digit span backwards paradigm, while control participants did not receive any training. Before and after training, both trained and control participants were exposed to frequency-altered auditory feedback while producing vocalizations. After training, trained participants exhibited significantly decreased N1 amplitudes and increased P2 amplitudes …

Murine Cmv Infection Induces The Continuous Production Of Mucosal Resident T Cells., Corinne J Smith, Sofia Caldeira-Dantas, Holly Turula, Christopher M. Snyder

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpesvirus that persists for life and maintains extremely large numbers of T cells with select specificities in circulation. However, it is unknown how viral persistence impacts T cell populations in mucosal sites. We found that many murine (M)CMV-specific CD8s in mucosal tissues became resident memory T cells (TRM). These cells adopted an intraepithelial localization in the salivary gland that correlated with, but did not depend on, expression of the integrin CD103. MCMV-specific TRM cells formed early after infection, and spleen-localized cells had reduced capacities to become TRM at late times. Surprisingly, however, small numbers of new …

Reliability Of Isometric And Eccentric Isokinetic Shoulder External Rotation, Brianna M. Papotto, Thomas Rice, Terry Malone, Timothy Butterfield, Tim L. Uhl

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

CONTEXT: Shoulder external rotators are challenged eccentrically throughout the deceleration phase of throwing which is thought to contribute to overuse injuries. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs as well as identify deficits, reliable and responsive measures of isometric and eccentric shoulder external rotation are necessary. Previously, isometric measures have primarily tested a single position and eccentric measures have not been found to have high reliability.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the between day reliability of multiple angle isometric and dynamic eccentric isokinetic testing of shoulder external rotation.

DESIGN: Repeated measures Participants: 10 healthy subjects (age: 30 ± 12 years, …

Silica Generated Reactive Oxygen Species, Phagolysosomal Leakage And Cell Death In Alveolar Macrophages, Gaurav Joshi Nov 2015

Silica Generated Reactive Oxygen Species, Phagolysosomal Leakage And Cell Death In Alveolar Macrophages, Gaurav Joshi

Doctoral Dissertations

Silicosis is a lung disease characterized by pulmonary fibrosis that arises from chronic inhalation of silica dust in various occupational settings. Inhaled silica particles get deposited in the alveoli where macrophages engulf them leading to inflammation and macrophage cell death. The presence of apoptotic macrophages in the lungs is sufficient to cause inflammation and fibrosis whereas; inhibition of macrophage cell death prevents fibrosis. The goal of this study is therefore to identify the processes within an alveolar macrophage leading to cell death after uptake of silica particles. In order to accomplish this goal, we have utilized various fluorescent probes and …

Effect Of An Engineering Camp On Students’ Perceptions Of Engineering And Technology, Rebekah Hammack, Toni A. Ivey, Juliana Utley, Karen A. High

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Students’ knowledge about a profession influences their future decisions about careers. Research indicates that students tend to hold stereotypical views of engineers, which would hinder engineering as a career choice. The purpose of this study was to measure how participating in a week long engineering summer camp affected middle school students’ (N519) attitudes towards engineering and their conceptions of engineering and technology. Results indicate that participation in the programs had a positive impact on the students’ understandings of what technology is and the work engineers do. Although the results indicate a positive impact on participants, it is not clear which …

The findings of this study reveal the importance of aesthetic learning experiences in knowledge construction and the ways in which thinking through complex issues with others benefits social action.

Mindfulness, Democracy, And Education, Andrea Marie Hyde, James G. Laprad Nov 2015

Mindfulness, Democracy, And Education, Andrea Marie Hyde, James G. Laprad

Democracy & Education

In this article, we explain how mindfulness can enhance a democratic way of being, connecting practices of awareness, reflection, dialog, and action to democratic citizenship and social arrangements. We begin by sharing our understanding of democracy as a philosophy and a political system. We then provide a background for the concept of mindfulness as it is used by those in the field of education and health care and as we connect it to democracy and democratic education. We introduce a mindfulness pedagogy and use this pedagogy to develop our concept of mindfully democratic schools. We use the work of John …
