Adaptive Evolution Of Eel Fluorescent Proteins From Fatty Acid Binding Proteins Produces Bright Fluorescence In The Marine Environment, David F. Gruber, Jean P. Gaffney, Shaadi Mehr, Rob Desalle, John S. Sparks, Jelena Platisa, Vincent A. Pieribone

We report the identification and characterization of two new members of a family of bilirubin-inducible fluorescent proteins (FPs) from marine chlopsid eels and demonstrate a key region of the sequence that serves as an evolutionary switch from non-fluorescent to fluorescent fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs). Using transcriptomic analysis of two species of brightly fluorescent Kaupichthys eels (Kaupichthys hyoproroides and Kaupichthys n. sp.), two new FPs were identified, cloned and characterized (Chlopsid FP I and Chlopsid FP II). We then performed phylogenetic analysis on 210 FABPs, spanning 16 vertebrate orders, and including 163 vertebrate taxa. We show that the fluorescent FPs diverged …
Wildlife In U.S. Cities: Managing Unwanted Animals, John Hadidian
Wildlife In U.S. Cities: Managing Unwanted Animals, John Hadidian
Conservation Collection
Conflicts between people and wild animals in cities are undoubtedly as old as urban living itself. In the United States it is only of late, however, that many of the species now found in cities have come to live there. The increasing kind and number of human-wildlife conflicts in urbanizing environments makes it a priority that effective and humane means of conflict resolution be found. The urban public wants conflicts with wildlife resolved humanely, but needs to know what the alternative management approaches are, and what ethical standards should guide their use. This paper examines contemporary urban wildlife control in …

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Understanding concerns about the welfare of farm animals is important for the development of socially sustainable production practices. This study used an online survey to test how views on group versus stall housing for pregnant sows varied when Canadian and US participants were provided information about these systems, including access to scientific papers, YouTube videos, Google images, and a frequently-asked-questions page (S1 Appendix). Initial responses and changes in responses after accessing the information were analyzed from Likert scores of 242 participants and from their written comments. Participants were less willing to accept the use of gestation stalls after viewing information …

The identification of conserved syntenic regions enables discovery of predicted locations for orthologous and homeologous genes, evenwhennosuchgeneispresent.Thiscapabilitymeansthatsynteny-basedmethodsarefarmoreeffectivethansequencesimilaritybased methods in identifying true-negatives, a necessity forstudying gene loss and gene transposition. However, the identification of syntenicregionsrequirescomplexanalyseswhichmustberepeatedforpairwisecomparisonsbetweenanytwospecies. Therefore,as the number of published genomes increases, there is a growing demand for scalable, simple-to-use applications to perform comparative genomic analyses that cater to both gene family studies and genome-scale studies. We implemented SynFind, a web-based tool that addresses this need. Given one query genome, SynFind is capable of identifying conserved syntenic regions in any set of targetgenomes.SynFindiscapableofreportingper-geneinformation,usefulforresearchersstudyingspecificgenefamilies,aswellas genome-wide data sets of syntenic gene and predicted gene …

Acoustic communication is essential for the reproductive success of the plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus). During the breeding season, type I males use acoustic cues to advertise nest location to potential mates, creating an audible signal that attracts reproductive females. Type II (sneaker) males also likely use this social acoustic signal to find breeding pairs from which to steal fertilizations. Estrogen-induced changes in the auditory system of breeding females are thought to enhance neural encoding of the advertisement call, and recent anatomical data suggest the saccule (the main auditory end organ) as one possible target for this seasonal modulation. Here …

UNLABELLED: The striatum is essential for many aspects of mammalian behavior, including motivation and movement, and is dysfunctional in motor disorders such as Parkinson's disease. The vesicular glutamate transporter 3 (VGLUT3) is expressed by striatal cholinergic interneurons (CINs) and is thus well positioned to regulate dopamine (DA) signaling and locomotor activity, a canonical measure of basal ganglia output. We now report that VGLUT3 knock-out (KO) mice show circadian-dependent hyperlocomotor activity that is restricted to the waking cycle and is due to an increase in striatal DA synthesis, packaging, and release. Using a conditional VGLUT3 KO mouse, we show that deletion …

Ethics And Spirituality Of Sustainability: What Can We All Do?, Satinder K. Dhiman
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This article approaches the topic of sustainability in a broad, interdisciplinary fashion − in the manner of our total footprint on the planet, not just our carbon footprint. It proposes to bring together the two allied areas of sustainability and spirituality in a dialectical manner, with ethics as a balancing force and spirituality playing the role of the proverbial invisible hand guiding our quest for sustainability. It takes the view that, in essence, spirituality and sustainability are vitally interlinked. When the spiritual dimension of our being is underdeveloped, we turn into pleasure-seeking automatons, plundering the planet in a mindless race …

Servant Leadership And Its Relationships With Core Self-Evaluation And Job Satisfaction, Len Tischler, Robert Giambatista, Robert Mckeage, David Mccormick
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Servant leadership is a growing topic in the leadership literature. Our study considered servant leadership’s relationship to two outcomes, core self-evaluation and job satisfaction. The former is particularly noteworthy because if servant leadership predicts core self-evaluation this would confirm that servant leadership affects important changes in employees as people, a central tenet of servant leadership. In addition, if servant leadership predicts core self-evaluation, this could add to the question of whether core self-evaluation is a non-changeable personality trait or is potentially malleable. We conducted a field study of three firms and found that servant leadership predicts both core self-evaluation and …

Jefferson Surgical Solutions
When Dr. Yeo left Johns Hopkins in October of 2005 to lead the Department of Surgery at Jefferson, he had big plans. Over the last ten years, the improvements have been dramatic across the board thanks to the support and contributions of five faculty members he selected to serve as vice chairs:
Jonathan Brody, PhD, Vice Chair for Research, supervises and facilitates research activities in the Department. To support and publicize research initiatives, Dr. Brody manages a pilot grant program for the surgical faculty, a research seminar series, and a bi-annual resident research symposium. He works with other faculty …
