Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan Nov 2015

Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Marine sponge Cinachyrella sp used in this study are commonly found in offshore South Florida and Caribbean waters and appeared to be resilient in closed system aquaculture. Marine sponges host diverse bacterial symbionts that are distinct compared to bacteria found in ambient seawater, however the roles of a large fraction of the bacterial community in marine sponges are unknown. Comparison of symbiotic to aposymbiotic (bacteria-free) sponges could provide information about interactions (metabolic and physiologic) between the bacteria and sponge. In this study, a single Cinachyrella kuekenthali individual was subsectioned into explants (N=240) in order to provide identical bacterial communities …

Beaked whales are deep diving elusive animals, difficult to census with conventional visual surveys. Methods are presented for the density estimation of beaked whales, using passive acoustic monitoring data collected at sites in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) from the period during and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (2010-2013). Beaked whale species detected include: Gervais' (Mesoplodon europaeus), Cuvier's (Ziphius cavirostris), Blainville's (Mesoplodon densirostris) and an unknown species of Mesoplodon sp. (designated as Beaked Whale Gulf - BWG). For Gervais' and Cuvier's beaked whales, we estimated weekly animal density using two methods, one based on the number of echolocation clicks, …

Sidestream Smoke Exposure Increases The Susceptibility Of Airway Epithelia To Adenoviral Infection, Priyanka Sharma, Abimbola O. Kolawole, Susan B. Core, Adriana E. Kajon, Katherine J.D.A. Excoffon Nov 2015

Sidestream Smoke Exposure Increases The Susceptibility Of Airway Epithelia To Adenoviral Infection, Priyanka Sharma, Abimbola O. Kolawole, Susan B. Core, Adriana E. Kajon, Katherine J.D.A. Excoffon

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Although significant epidemiological evidence indicates that cigarette smoke exposure increases the incidence and severity of viral infection, the molecular mechanisms behind the increased susceptibility of the respiratory tract to viral pathogens are unclear. Adenoviruses are non-enveloped DNA viruses and important causative agents of acute respiratory disease. The Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is the primary receptor for many adenoviruses. We hypothesized that cigarette smoke exposure increases epithelial susceptibility to adenovirus infection by increasing the abundance of apical CAR. Methodology and Findings: Cultured human airway epithelial cells (CaLu-3) were used as a model to investigate the effect of sidestream cigarette …

The Effect Of Motivation And Positive Affect On Ego Depletion: Replenishment Versus Release Mechanism, Ze Zhu, Jian Li, Bo Zhang, Ye Li, Houcan Zhang

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this study, 2 experiments were conducted to investigate whether motivation and positive affect can alleviate ego depletion and to elucidate their possible mechanisms. In Experiment 1, a crossing-out-letter task was adapted to reach an ego depletion state for Chinese participants. Participants were then randomly assigned to the extrinsic motivation group, the positive affect group or the depletion control group. After the experimental treatment, a dumbbell task was used to measure participants' remaining self-regulatory resources. The results showed that participants in the motivation and positive affect groups performed better on the dumbbell task than participants in the depletion control group. …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Wnt/β-catenin signaling is required for crypt structure maintenance. We previously observed nuclear accumulation of Ser-552 phosphorylated β-catenin (pβ-CatSer-552) in intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) during colitis and colitis-associated cancer. Data here delineate a novel multiprotein cytosolic complex (MCC) involved in β-catenin signaling in the intestine. The MCC contains p85α, the class IA subunit of PI3K, along with β-catenin, 14-3-3ζ, Akt, and p110α. MCC levels in IEC increase in colitis and colitis-associated cancer patients. IEC-specific p85α-deficient (p85ΔIEC) mice develop more severe dextran sodium …

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

Environmental enrichment (EE) housing paradigms have long been shown beneficial for brain function involving neural growth and activity, learning and memory capacity, and for developing stress resiliency. The expression of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2, which is important for synaptic plasticity and memory, is increased with corticosterone (CORT), undermining synaptic plasticity and memory. Thus, we determined the effect of EE and stress on modulating GluA2 expression in Sprague-Dawley male rats. Several markers were evaluated which include: plasma CORT, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), GluA2, and the atypical protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ). For 1 week standard-(ST) or EE-housed animals …

Pennsylvania School Solicitors’ Guidance On How School Officials Should Respond When Regulating Off-Campus Student Expression, Scott Thomas Eveslage Nov 2015

Pennsylvania School Solicitors’ Guidance On How School Officials Should Respond When Regulating Off-Campus Student Expression, Scott Thomas Eveslage

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this study was to gather and analyze the perspectives of Pennsylvania school solicitors in Montgomery and Bucks Counties about how school officials should assess their regulatory authority of off-campus student online expression. With the rise in students online communication, the increasing and changing role of the school administrator, and the lack of a Supreme Court ruling on the matter, guidance and clarity for how school officials should proceed is blurry. Case law used as precedent to guide decision making has been inconsistent, with variations based on geographic region and the trends in that particular Circuit Court of …

Novel Enzyme Perspectives: Arylalkylamine N-Acyltransferases From Bombyx Mori & 1-Deoxy- D-Xylulose-5-Phosphate Synthase From Plasmodium Falciparum And Plasmodium Vivax, Matthew R. Battistini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is dedicated to the research and investigation of novel enzymes and the methods used to study them, with physiological roles ranging from isoprenoid biosynthesis to neurotransmitter production. Using a combination of bioinformatics, recombinant cloning, enzymology, and proteomics, we have contributed to the understanding and exploration of several human illnesses, including malaria, cancer, and endocrine dysfunction.

Our first project involved studying the enzymes responsible for N-acylarylalkylamide biosynthesis in Bombyx mori. Very little is known how these potent signaling molecules are produced in vivo, however, one possible pathway is the direct conjugation of an acyl-CoA to a corresponding …

An Animal Model Of Flashbulb Memory: Insights Into The Time-Dependent Mechanisms Of Memory Enhancement, Laura Ashley Bullard Nov 2015

An Animal Model Of Flashbulb Memory: Insights Into The Time-Dependent Mechanisms Of Memory Enhancement, Laura Ashley Bullard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The vivid memory of an emotional event, as well as memory for incidental details associated with the arousing event, has been referred to collectively as a “flashbulb memory”. An important aspect of flashbulb memory in people is that an emotional event enhances memory of contextual details, such as the weather, or clothes one was wearing at the time of the event. Therefore, an emotional event not only produces a detailed memory of the event, itself, but also enhances memory for contextual details that would otherwise not be remembered. The first goal of this work is to describe the development of …

Passive Voice Constructions In Modern Irish, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

Passive Voice Constructions In Modern Irish, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

This paper is about the passive construction, of which modern Irish (a VSO language) has two primary forms, the personal passive and its variants, and the impersonal. An empirical question is posed as to whether a third passive form exists within the language, that of a functionally defined GET-passive. To deliver a unified analysis of the various passive constructions, a perspective that takes account of the complete event is necessary.

Preparation Of Chitosan-Siloxane Porous Hybrids With Hydroxyapatite For Repair Of Skull Defect, Yuki Shirosaki Nov 2015

Preparation Of Chitosan-Siloxane Porous Hybrids With Hydroxyapatite For Repair Of Skull Defect, Yuki Shirosaki

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

A craniotomy is performed for various neurological diseases, injuries, or conditions such as brain tumors, hematomas, aneurysms, and skull fractures. First, the small-sized holes, called “burr holes” were made to insert some surgical tools such as a shunt, a drain, an intracranial pressure monitor, and endoscope, etc. or be the starting point of removing large skull fracture. After surgery, the holes should be closed by the calcium phosphate cements or the titanium plates, because the skull defects are not spontaneously regenerated.

Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have attracted great interest as bone substitute material. However, the cements easily flow into the …

Exploration Of The Materials Paradigm With Respect To Bioinspiration, John Nychka Nov 2015

Exploration Of The Materials Paradigm With Respect To Bioinspiration, John Nychka

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

From the perspective of materials science and engineering the materials paradigm has traditionally been made of four grouped, and interrelated, fundamental aspects of materials: structure, properties, processing/synthesis, and performance. In order to make connections between these aspects we often rely on characterization techniques. When considering the field of bioinspiration, does the materials paradigm adequately cover what nature has to offer? Our way of approaching the issue of bioinspiration has largely been based in applying the materials paradigm, however, is there anything missing in our approach? Can we map nature to the materials paradigm? How can we? What can the paradigms …

Biologically Inspired And Impact-Resistant Composites, David Kisailus Nov 2015

Biologically Inspired And Impact-Resistant Composites, David Kisailus

Composites at Lake Louise (CALL 2015)

There is an increasing need for the development of multifunctional lightweight materials with high strength and toughness. Natural systems have evolved efficient strategies, exemplified in the biological tissues of numerous animal and plant species, to synthesize and construct composites from a limited selection of available starting materials that often exhibit exceptional mechanical properties that are similar, and frequently superior to, mechanical properties exhibited by many engineering materials. These biological systems have accomplished this feat by establishing controlled synthesis and hierarchical assembly of nano- to micro-scaled building blocks. This controlled synthesis and assembly require organic that is used to transport mineral …
