Emerging Biotechnologies And The 1972 Biological Weapons Convention: Can It Keep Up With The Biotechnology Revolution?, Victoria Sutton Jan 2015

Emerging Biotechnologies And The 1972 Biological Weapons Convention: Can It Keep Up With The Biotechnology Revolution?, Victoria Sutton

Texas A&M Law Review

In light of the quandaries presented by domestic law, has the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972 (“BWC”) also been so outpaced by the technologies that it is no longer effective and meaningful in international law? Part II will examine the continuum of official actions that have attempted to keep pace with the growing biotechnologies that may present threats to global biosecurity through interpreting the BWC. Part III looks at how these definitions may not be sufficient. Finally, Part IV looks at other mechanisms that may provide a better way of controlling biological weapons than redefining the technologies through the current …

Reinventing The Trial: The Innocence Revolution And Proposals To Modify The American Criminal Trial, Marvin Zalman, Ralph Grunewald Jan 2015

Reinventing The Trial: The Innocence Revolution And Proposals To Modify The American Criminal Trial, Marvin Zalman, Ralph Grunewald

Texas A&M Law Review

Law review articles by D. Michael Risinger, Tim Bakken, Keith Findley, Samuel Gross, and Christopher Slobogin have proposed modifications to pretrial and trial procedures designed to reduce wrongful convictions. Some fit within the adversary model and others have “inquisitorial” features. We compare and evaluate the recommendations from the perspectives of lawyer-scholars trained in the United States and Germany. We examine the proposals for their novelty, feasibility, complexity, likely impact, and possible negative or positive side effects. This Article describes, compares, and critically analyzes the articles; suggests additional truth-enhancing procedural reforms; and provides a platform for further analysis.

Gunnison's Prairie Dog Restoration Experiment (Gpdrex): Population Dynamics Within Grasslands At The Sevilleta National Widlife Refuge, New Mexico, Ana Davidson, Stephanie Baker Jan 2015

Gunnison's Prairie Dog Restoration Experiment (Gpdrex): Population Dynamics Within Grasslands At The Sevilleta National Widlife Refuge, New Mexico, Ana Davidson, Stephanie Baker

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) are burrowing rodents considered to be ecosystem engineers and keystone species of the central grasslands of North America. Yet, prairie dog populations have declined by an estimated 98% throughout their historic range. This dramatic decline has resulted in the widespread loss of their important ecological role throughout this grassland system. The 92,060 ha Sevilleta NWR in central New Mexico includes more than 54,000 ha of native grassland. Gunnison’s prairie dogs (C. gunnisoni) were reported to occupy ~15,000 ha of what is now the SNWR during the 1960’s, prior to their systematic eradication. In 2010, we collaborated …

Removal Of Partly Threaded Cannulated Screws After Treatment Of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis: A Pilot Study, Nathan T. Morrell, Ian A. Power, Dukens Labaze, Elizabeth A. Szalay

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Background: Partly threaded cannulated screws (PTCS) are currently recommended for management of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), but no advantage of these screws over fully threaded cannulated screws (FTCS) has been demonstrated. We investigated whether PTCS are more difficult to remove than FTCS.

Methods: The records of 33 patients who underwent implant removal after operative treatment of SCFE were reviewed, and the following data were collected: age and sex of the patient, type of screw used (partly or fully threaded), length of removal operation, and any comments on the difficulty of screw removal.

Results: Sixty-one percent of operative reports for …

The Effects Of Frequent Exposure To Violence And Trauma On Police Officers, Ternarian A. Warren Jan 2015

The Effects Of Frequent Exposure To Violence And Trauma On Police Officers, Ternarian A. Warren

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Police officers who maintain negative or traumatic information in long-term memory are vulnerable to mental illness, unstable emotional and behavioral responses, interpersonal problems, and impaired social relationships. The cognitive theory suggests that police officers externalize various negative or maladaptive behaviors as a result of frequent exposure to traumatic events. Researchers have found that police officers tend to either not seek mental health treatment, try to fix their own mental health problem, or if in treatment will not be forthcoming with internalized thoughts of psychological distress. The intention of this research was to examine the relationship between police officers' frequent exposure …

Educated Guesses That Affect Access To Educational Resources Beyond Early Childhood, Pamela Colton Jan 2015

Educated Guesses That Affect Access To Educational Resources Beyond Early Childhood, Pamela Colton

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Misconceptions about cognitive development cause damaging assumptions that affect access to academic intervention after middle childhood, especially for older students who also have significant disabilities (Aos, Lieb, Mayfield, Miller, & Pennucci, 2005). In this study, possible sources for reduced expectations for post-middle childhood students are discussed and evaluated. Brigance test scores of seven adult students labeled with severe cognitive impairment are documented at the beginning of a regular school year, and then compared to scores at the end of the school year. Target students received regular school based speech language therapy and occupational therapy, as well as direct academic instruction …

Harmonious, Obsessive Or Altruistic? Why Employees Remain In The Not For Profit Sector, Ronelle Toop Jan 2015

Harmonious, Obsessive Or Altruistic? Why Employees Remain In The Not For Profit Sector, Ronelle Toop

Theses : Honours

The Not-For-Profit (NFP) sector is commonly described as having issues recruiting and retaining talented employees. This phenomenon places additional pressure on employees in the sector and has a negative impact on NFP organisational performance. NFP organisations are often prone to voluntary turnover pressure due to poor remuneration, poor working conditions, and onerous duties (Colleran, Gilchrist, & Morris, 2010). The majority of research in the NFP sector has focussed on the retention of volunteers. However, this study will explore the issue of retaining employees within the sector, in order to improve longevity of tenure and subsequent organisational performance.

There is a …

Landscape Shifting Paradigm For The Endangered Species Act: An Integrated Critical Habitat Recovery Program, Sam Kalen Jan 2015

Landscape Shifting Paradigm For The Endangered Species Act: An Integrated Critical Habitat Recovery Program, Sam Kalen

Natural Resources Journal

This article explores how the designation of critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act provides an opportunity for landscape-level planning to conserve species. The Act’s requirement to designate critical habitat has generated considerable controversy. Some question its utility, including even those who aggressively pursue species conservation. Other industry and local communities challenge the economic analyses accompanying designations. For many years, designating critical habitat only occurred after litigation, well after the Act suggests designation. The general malaise surrounding the program, therefore, is well documented. Yet policy-makers and scholars shy away from crafting innovative proposals for resolving the principal issues hovering around …

A Special Purpose: The Migratory Bird Treaty Act And Wind Energy, Robyn Rose Jan 2015

A Special Purpose: The Migratory Bird Treaty Act And Wind Energy, Robyn Rose

Natural Resources Journal

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), almost a century old, incites disagreement between conservationists, wind energy developers, and the courts. The MBTA protects over 800 bird species but unlike other conservation laws, the MBTA and its regulations do not provide for “incidental takes” (an unintentionally caused bird death or injury). In the absence of an incidental take permitting program, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) developed the voluntary Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines to reduce wind energy impacts on migratory birds. A circuit court split exists on whether a wind energy developer violates the MBTA when a bird is …

Understanding Trends In The New Mexico Dairy Industry, And Accounting For Direct And Indirect Water Use In Dairy Productions, Schuyler Smith

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Water planning is important in all places, and particularly so in an arid state like New Mexico. How the water is used, and how much is thereby important. Often water use by the agricultural sector, is considered as an aggregated whole such as New Mexico First (2014). The objective of this research was to conduct an analysis of the growth and change of the New Mexico dairy industry, and water use to support this industry, that might better inform the future structure of state and regional water planning in New Mexico. The dairy industry has been a high growth industry …

Chemical Interactions And Mobility Of Uranium Near Abandoned Mine Wastes At Rio Paguate, Laguna New Mexico, Cherie L. De Vore

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The legacy of U mining activities in New Mexico has resulted in a number of abandoned mine sites that have not been adequately managed or remediated. An investigation of the chemical interactions and mobility of uranium (U) near abandoned mine wastes was performed at a site located in Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico. Elevated U concentrations (ranging from 65 to 710 μg/L) were observed in surface water below an abandoned uranium mine. These U concentrations significantly decrease (ranging from 5.4 to 6.4 μg/L) downstream at a reservoir five kilometers below the mine. Our water data suggest that U forms aqueous complexes …

Can I Call You Back? A Sustained Interaction With Biospecimen Donors To Facilitate Advances In Research, Jonathan S. Miller Jan 2015

Can I Call You Back? A Sustained Interaction With Biospecimen Donors To Facilitate Advances In Research, Jonathan S. Miller

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

"For the cure." This statement resonates throughout society and offers a simple reasoning for the conduct of biomedical research. It provides a strong impetus for advocates of biomedical research to pursue appropriations to support research hypotheses, advanced medical technologies, and targeted therapeutic strategies. Answering sophisticated medical questions, however, requires researchers and clinicians to have an adequate supply of materials necessary to facilitate their research endeavors. These materials-commonly referred to as biospecimens- may include frozen human embryos, tissue specimens, blood samples, buccal swabs, or exhaled breath condensate, all of which may be collected and stored in biobanks.

Silencing Mist1 Gene Expression Is Essential For Recovery From Acute Pancreatitis, Anju Karki, Sean E. Humphrey, Rebecca E. Steele, David A. Hess, Elizabeth J. Taparowsky, Stephen F. Konieczny

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Acinar cells of the exocrine pancreas are tasked with synthesizing, packaging and secreting vast quantities of pro-digestive enzymes to maintain proper metabolic homeostasis for the organism. Because the synthesis of high levels of hydrolases is potentially dangerous, the pancreas is prone to acute pancreatitis (AP), a disease that targets acinar cells, leading to acinar-ductal metaplasia (ADM), inflammation and fibrosis-events that can transition into the earliest stages of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Despite a wealth of information concerning the broad phenotype associated with pancreatitis, little is understood regarding specific transcriptional regulatory networks that are susceptible to AP and the role these networks …

Despite the clear advantages of generalist feeding, many insect herbivores feed on a relatively small number of available host plants with in phylogenetically restricted groups. To better understand patterns of host plant use I used the sister species Altinote stratonice and Altinote dicaeus and their overlapping but distinct host plant range. I measured physiological effects of plants by using development time, pupal mass, and survival. To determine the importance of enemies I quantified rates of parasitism and rates of predation. Finally I measured host plant frequency, and host plant abundance. I found that survival of A. dicaeus and A. stratonice …

Sensorimotor Analysis Of Oxaliplatin Treated Rats, Krystyna Blanka Wieczerzak Jan 2015

Sensorimotor Analysis Of Oxaliplatin Treated Rats, Krystyna Blanka Wieczerzak

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is currently no direct evidence that chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) necessarily explains the sensorimotor deficits seen in 90% patients treated with oxaliplatin (OX). Some patients develop sensory symptoms without CIPN. Our laboratory reported abnormal signaling from IA afferents in OX treated rats with no evidence of neuropathy. We hypothesized that in the absence of CIPN, the behavioral disability is associated with impaired sensory encoding in OX treated rats. The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensorimotor abilities of OX treated rats. The battery of behavioral tests was designed to address proprioception and sensorimotor integration. In the …

Automatic Turning Movements Identification System: Intersection Error Analysis, Brandon Ross Orr, Joseph Thomas Lanni Jan 2015

Automatic Turning Movements Identification System: Intersection Error Analysis, Brandon Ross Orr, Joseph Thomas Lanni

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

To lessen congestion at intersections, traffic identification systems are placed at roadway intersections in order to collect vehicle data. These traffic identification systems include various types of detectors that can identify the presence of vehicles in real-time. However, these detectors can only detect their presence and not their turning movements. To fix this issue, The University of Akron has developed a program that can automatically identify vehicle turning movements and is called the Automatic Turning Movement Identification System, or ATMIS. ATMIS uses mathematical algorithms to compute the vehicle’s turning movements based on a sink and feed detector paring. During traffic …
