Effects Of Processing Treated Corn Stover And Distillers Grains On Performance Of Growing Cattle, Jana L. Harding, Curtis J. Bittner, Dirk B. Burken Burken, Galen E. Erickson, James C. Macdonald
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A study evaluated the effects of replacinga diet consisting of 60% corn stover, 18% solubles, and 18% distillers grains with a complete pelleted feed containing calcium oxide (CaO) treated corn stover and distillers grains on growing cattle performance. The pelleted feed was either pair-fed to the control treatment or fed ad libitum. There were no differences in ending BW, ADG, or F:G between the control and pair-fed treatment. Feeding the pellet ad libitum resulted in greater DMI and ADG; however, the cattle had greater F:G. The pellet has 98% the feeding value of the control treatment.
Effects Of Replacing Corn With A Pelleted Treated Corn Stover And Distillers Grains On Intake And Total Tract Digestibility Of Finishing Diets, Jana L. Harding, Melissa L. Jolly-Breithaupt, Galen E. Erickson Erickson, James C. Macdonald
Effects Of Replacing Corn With A Pelleted Treated Corn Stover And Distillers Grains On Intake And Total Tract Digestibility Of Finishing Diets, Jana L. Harding, Melissa L. Jolly-Breithaupt, Galen E. Erickson Erickson, James C. Macdonald
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A digestion study was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing dry-rolled corn (DRC) with a pelleted feed containing treated corn stover, solubles, and distillers grains (DDG). Replacing DRC with the pelleted feed had no effect on intakes. Similarly, total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, or NDF were not affected by dietary treatment. There was a tendency for differences in average ruminalpH between treatments; however, proportions of acetate, propionate, and butyrate were not impacted. It was concluded that the DRC could be replacedwith a pelleted stover and distillers in the finishing diet without altering total tract digestion.
Evaluation Of Rumen Metabolism And Digestibility Of Corn Silage And Mdgs Finishing Diets, Dirk B. Burken, Shelby E. Gardine, Jana L. Harding Harding, Melissa L. Jolly-Breithaupt, Galen E. Erickson
Evaluation Of Rumen Metabolism And Digestibility Of Corn Silage And Mdgs Finishing Diets, Dirk B. Burken, Shelby E. Gardine, Jana L. Harding Harding, Melissa L. Jolly-Breithaupt, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A metabolism experiment was conducted to evaluate rumen pH, digestibility, and in situ nutrient disappearance in steers fed either a diet containing 95% corn silage or diets containing 15 or 45% corn silage and 20 or 40% modified distillers grain with solubles (MDGS). Steers fed 45% compared to 15% corn silage had increased ruminal pH, DMI, NDF intake, and NDF digestibility. Decreased DM and OM digestibility were observed in diets containing 40% MDGS compared to 20%. Disappearance of corn bran NDF was increased in diets containing 45% corn silage. These results imply enhanced fiber digestibility as diets increased in corn …

Genetic Parameter Estimates For Calving Difficulty And Birth Weight In A Multibreed Population, Cashley M. Ahlberg, Larry A. Kuehn, R. Mark Thallman Thallman, Stephen D. Kachman, Matthew L. Spangler
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Eighteen breeds were utilized to estimate genetic parameters for birth weight and calving difficulty on first-parity females. Birth weight and calving difficulty were moderately heritable allowing for genetic selection to decrease calving difficulty. Genetic correlation estimates were positive between direct effects for birth weight and calving difficulty. This work will serve as the foundation for estimating across-breed EPD for calving difficulty in the U.S.
Competition Expressed: Marking Places Within Rural And Urban Landscapes, Ralph J. Hartley, Sharon L. Kennedy
Competition Expressed: Marking Places Within Rural And Urban Landscapes, Ralph J. Hartley, Sharon L. Kennedy
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The extent to which marking places with images, symbols and/or script on a landscape reflect the dynamics of a socio-economic environment continues to be a subject of interest in social science. Places become socio-culturally meaningful often because of the content of the markings on non-portable surfaces. In some contexts the information content of the markings reveal a perception of propriety when competition for space or other resources between groups and non-kin related individuals characterizes a social environment. In other contexts the content of markings reflect competition between individuals for resources, status, or prestige. Urban environments, dense with diverse human activities, …
Alienata Da'sensi: Reframing Bernini's S. Teresa, Andrea Bolland
Alienata Da'sensi: Reframing Bernini's S. Teresa, Andrea Bolland
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Ecstasy of St Teresa for the Cornaro Chapel (1647–52) is perhaps the artist’s most sensually charged creation, and the apparently physical nature of Teresa’s ecstasy is today even acknowledged in survey textbooks. Teresa herself opened the door to this reading when, in describing her spiritual ecstasy, she admitted that ‘the body doesn’t fail to share in some of it, and even a great deal’. Yet the balance between sense and spirit in the sculpture emerges somewhat differently if it is viewed (literally and figuratively) in context: as an altarpiece in a chapel where its presentation is structured …
Cryopreservation Of Domestic Cat Epididymal Spermatozoa, Jesse Ray Saenz
Cryopreservation Of Domestic Cat Epididymal Spermatozoa, Jesse Ray Saenz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary lines of defense in preventing any exotic species from becoming endangered or extinct should be the protection of their habitat and from poaching. For wildlife conservationists, these primary measures are often not feasible, and thus cannot be the only means to prevent extinction. The objective of this research was to identify a semen extender that contained little to no egg yolk and could still effectively freeze domestic cat epididymal spermatozoa, for the purpose to sort spermatozoa into X and Y, using flow cytometry. In the first experiment we compared a TesT (Tes + Tris) 20% egg yolk extender …
Large-Scale Geometric Data Decomposition, Processing And Structured Mesh Generation, Wuyi Yu
Large-Scale Geometric Data Decomposition, Processing And Structured Mesh Generation, Wuyi Yu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mesh generation is a fundamental and critical problem in geometric data modeling and processing. In most scientific and engineering tasks that involve numerical computations and simulations on 2D/3D regions or on curved geometric objects, discretizing or approximating the geometric data using a polygonal or polyhedral meshes is always the first step of the procedure. The quality of this tessellation often dictates the subsequent computation accuracy, efficiency, and numerical stability. When compared with unstructured meshes, the structured meshes are favored in many scientific/engineering tasks due to their good properties. However, generating high-quality structured mesh remains challenging, especially for complex or large-scale …
A Conductor’S Analysis Of Almeida Prado’S Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ According To Saint Mark, Cléusia Carreira Gonçalves
A Conductor’S Analysis Of Almeida Prado’S Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ According To Saint Mark, Cléusia Carreira Gonçalves
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study is based on the analysis and performance considerations of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Saint Mark by the Brazilian composer Almeida Prado (1943-2010). This passion setting, which comprises mixed choir, actors, organ, harpsichord and timpani, was composed in 1967. The setting of the passion story strictly follows the gospel account, and no other poetic text, reflective chorales or arias were added. Among other factors, this work is unique in that the choir is used to carry the narrative throughout the work. Also, the composer masterfully uses text-painting in the choral and instrumental parts in …

Characterization Of Cp43 And Pif1 Gwas Selected Candidate Genes In Medicago Truncatula And Their Contribution To Rhizobia Symbiosis And Phenotypes Of Interest Using An Hprna Based Rnai Platform, Nathaniel Henning
Departmental Honors Projects
Medicago truncatula is a model organism used to study the symbiotic relationship between plants and nitrogen fixing soil bacteria of the genus rhizobia. By studying the genes that are involved in this symbiosis we can accomplish the goal of transplanting the symbiotic relationship into agriculture staples (e.g. corn, wheat, etc.) that do not utilize similar symbiotic relationships with nitrogen fixers. This would help to reduce our reliance on nitrogen-based fertilizers. In order to identify plant genes that might be important for establishing and regulating optimal nitrogen-fixing symbioses, a large-scale Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) was performed. This study identified …
“The Autism Adventures Of Watson & Holmes”: Puppet Theatre To Improve Elementary Students’ Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sarah N. Simon
Departmental Honors Projects
The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a growing concern in schools across the nation. More students with high functioning autism are being mainstreamed, and students on and off the spectrum are being exposed to a wider variety of behaviors and new opportunities for friendship in school. Many students who fall on the autism spectrum suffer from the stigmatizing attitudes of their peers, and this stigmatization often stems from a lack of early education about mental health. Puppetry has been proven to captivate young audiences while teaching important messages in an entertaining and relatable way. The purpose of this …

"Waste Not, Want Not": Farmers' Reactions To The New Deal In Minnesota, Kacie Phillips
Departmental Honors Projects
By the time of the Stock Market Crash in 1929, farmers in America were already in financial trouble with the drop in demand after World War I. With poverty and malnourishment rampant, the motto of the Great Depression became “waste not, want not.” The government focused on alleviating human suffering in President Franklin Roosevelt’s “Hundred Days” of 1933 and instituted numerous legislative acts for relief, with special attention paid to farmers. As the rest of the nation fell into economic hardship, the government gave unprecedented attention to agriculture and developed relief programs to aid farmers and their families. Some historians …
Activating The Biological And Behavioral Immune Systems, Julia Christensen
Activating The Biological And Behavioral Immune Systems, Julia Christensen
Departmental Honors Projects
Psychology recognizes two distinct facets of the immune system: the biological immune system (BIO), covering all processes of the typical immune system, and the behavioral immune system (BEH), a set of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli. Research on this dual immune system indicates that each is capable of influencing the other (Schaller & Park, 2011). For example, perception of illness in others can activate the sympathetic nervous system (Schaller, Miller, Gervais, Yager, & Chen, 2010). Furthermore, evidence suggests that these two systems are capable of influencing moral judgment (Inbar, Pizarro, & Bloom, 2008). This study aims to …

Departmental Honors Projects
This project is an exploration of the confluence of visual and musical artistic processes. As well as exploring how music and visual arts can inform each other and create dialogue, a central part of the project is an attempt to reach a synesthetic state in my own artistic processes for which my training as a visual artist and musician laid the groundwork. Through active, creative experimentation with making music in response to artwork and vice versa, I undertook to achieve a union of the senses. The project includes historical research that places my work in the context of other artists …
The Significance Of Crispr/Cas9-Directed Cul3 Knockout On Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Zoe A. Lautz
The Significance Of Crispr/Cas9-Directed Cul3 Knockout On Human Colorectal Cancer Cells, Zoe A. Lautz
Departmental Honors Projects
Cancer, the second leading cause of death in the US, is caused by mutations in select genes that alter cellular function leading to uncontrolled proliferation. Understanding the specific genes that drive cancer can lead to the generation of novel cancer therapies. To identify novel genes that drive cancer in the colon (CRC), lungs, and ovaries in mice, Starr et al. employed a transposon-based insertional mutagenesis system. One of the genes identified, APC, is mutated in 70-80% of human CRCs. CUL3, suspected to be a general driver gene, was discovered in the lung cancer screen. CUL3 was analyzed for its role …

Touching Torture With A Ten-Foot Pole: The Legality Of Canada’S Approach To National Security Information Sharing With Human Rights-Abusing States, Craig Forcese
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In 2011, then-Public Safety Minister Vic Toews issued “ministerial directions” to Canada’s key security and intelligence agencies on “Information Sharing with Foreign Entities.” These directions permit information sharing in exigent circumstances, even where there is substantial risk of mistreatment of an individual. After a brief chorus of condemnation, the directions sank into relative obscurity while remaining part of Canada’s national security policy framework. This article aims to reignite discussion of these policies and their controversial content, relying in large measure on documents obtained by the author directly or through journalistic researchers under access to information law. First, I examine dilemmas …
Substantive Equality As Equal Recognition: A New Theory Of Section 15 Of The Charter, Anthony Robert Sangiuliano
Substantive Equality As Equal Recognition: A New Theory Of Section 15 Of The Charter, Anthony Robert Sangiuliano
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article presents a novel theory of the concept of substantive equality under section 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms called Substantive Equality as Equal Recognition. This contribution is timely in light of the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent disagreement over the proper jurisprudential approach to interpreting section 15(1) in the 2013 case of Quebec v A. Substantive Equality as Equal Recognition holds that the purpose of section 15(1) is to ensure that the law’s application does not reflect, through its impact or effects, hierarchies of status that exist between citizens within Canadian society. The article argues …

Impact Of Exposure To Weathered Crude Oil And Accumulation Of Pahs In Crawfish (Procambarus Clarkii), Brittany Lynn Chichester
LSU Master's Theses
The number of pipelines transporting crude oil and other refined petroleum products across the U.S. has increased 15.4% from 2004 to 2013. In Louisiana, over 3,450 miles of liquid petroleum pipelines crisscross the state. In January 2013, crude oil was accidentally released from an underground pipeline into Bayou Sorrel, Louisiana. This freshwater wetland is located within the Atchafalaya River Basin which is home to large populations of wild crawfish that could be impacted by the crude oil released. This study aims to assess the potential lethal impacts that crude oil spill may have produced in adult crawfish (P. clarkii) and …
Genetic And Transcriptomic Analyses Of The Rice Pathogenic Bacterium, Burkholderia Glumae, Reveal The Important Roles Of The Regulatory Gene, Tepr, For Bacterial Survival In Environmental Stresses, Jingyu Peng
LSU Master's Theses
Burkholderia glumae causes bacterial panicle blight in rice by producing the phytotoxin, toxoflavin, as a major virulence factor. Production of toxoflavin is negatively regulated by tepR, which encodes a sigma 54-dependent response regulator. In order to gain insights into the comprehensive biological functions of tepR, the genome-wide transcriptional profile dependent on tepR was analyzed through comparative transcriptome analysis between a tepR defective mutant and the wild-type strain, resulting in the identification of 238 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis indicated that genes involved in flagella assembly and stress response were highly enriched in tepR defective strain. Kyoto …
Pattern Mining And Events Discovery In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Data, Shobhit Sandesh Shakya
Pattern Mining And Events Discovery In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Data, Shobhit Sandesh Shakya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Molecular dynamics simulation method is widely used to calculate and understand a wide range of properties of materials. A lot of research efforts have been focused on simulation techniques but relatively fewer works are done on methods for analyzing the simulation results. Large-scale simulations usually generate massive amounts of data, which make manual analysis infeasible, particularly when it is necessary to look into the details of the simulation results. In this dissertation, we propose a system that uses computational method to automatically perform analysis of simulation data, which represent atomic position-time series. The system identifies, in an automated fashion, the …
A Peculiar Paradigm Of Perpetual Parallax, Randi Marie Willett
A Peculiar Paradigm Of Perpetual Parallax, Randi Marie Willett
LSU Master's Theses
Reality estranges as an encumbrance, a cage that traps with its clipped wings, layered veils, and stiff blankets. This hold subsists as an immovable vessel potted but never earthbound—mounted in a strained compartment, like jars with tight lids, lacking: in air, in breath, in imaginary attributes. Finally, with a last breath, an emergence blooms upon that which contextualizes momentary “reality” or rather that which defines a metaphorical escape from… actuality. My singular endeavor is to escape. My momentary escape is found in the illusory. My illusion is a perception of reality and with this perception I find my singular endeavor... …

LSU Master's Theses
During the summer of 2013, the M.F.A. acting ensemble at Louisiana State University was charged with devising solo performance projects that would be performed December 6-14, 2014. We were given artistic freedom to create shows that could cover different topics and a variety of genres. The writing and performance of this project served as a graduation requirement, but was also pitched as a professional opportunity post graduation. Initially I opposed this project, but I soon became elated once I chose my subject matter. I knew that if I was going to perform a solo piece for 30-40 minutes it had …

Effects Of Spinosad On Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Dependra Bhatta
LSU Master's Theses
Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus, are economically important structural pests of warm and humid regions. Different control measures have been developed to avoid the damage caused by them. Among the available measures, chemical treatments have predominated for the last five decades. In our study we tested the effect of spinosad, a biopesticide, on C. formosanus. Spinosad is composed of bacterial metabolites that have been widely used to control various agriculture pests. It has been tested on Kalotermitidae and Termitidae; however, not on Rhinotermitidae, the most destructive of termite families. Both no choice and choice tests were conducted using three concentrations, …
International Power On "Power", Steven Ferrey
International Power On "Power", Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
Can international power be effectively used to control ‘power’? Power sector carbon emissions to the environment must be solved for a solution to the international problem of climate change. Many of the large developing countries are underwriting the largest in world history push into more high-carbon coal-fired power, which will wholly frustrate world climate control goals. The United Nations scientific panel concluded, with high certainty, that the world is passing the point of being able to control increase in world temperature to less than 2 degrees C. (3.8 degrees Fahrenheit), the so-called ‘tipping point’ of the Planet’s climate.
