Development Of Neuroendocrine Components Of The Thyroid Axis In The Direct-Developing Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui: Formation Of The Median Eminence And Onset Of Pituitary Tsh Production., David H. Jennings, Bryce Evans, James Hanken Jan 2015

Development Of Neuroendocrine Components Of The Thyroid Axis In The Direct-Developing Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui: Formation Of The Median Eminence And Onset Of Pituitary Tsh Production., David H. Jennings, Bryce Evans, James Hanken

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Direct-developing frogs lack, wholly or in part, a wide range of larval features found in metamorphosing species and form adult-specific features precociously, during embryogenesis. Most information on thyroid regulation of direct development relies on hormone manipulations; the ontogeny of many thyroid axis components has not been fully described. This analysis examines differentiation of the median eminence of the hypothalamus and production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) by the pituitary of the direct-developing frog Eleutherodactylus coqui. The median eminence is established two-thirds of the way through embryogenesis. Cells immunoreactive to human TSHb antibodies are first detected during embryogenesis and quantitative changes in …

Enhanced Interrogation, The Report On Rendition, Detention, And Interrogation, And The Return Of Kriegsraison, Benjamin R. Farley Jan 2015

Enhanced Interrogation, The Report On Rendition, Detention, And Interrogation, And The Return Of Kriegsraison, Benjamin R. Farley

Emory International Law Review Recent Developments

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released the Report on Rendition, Detention, and Interrogation in December 2014 detailing the use of enhanced interrogation techniques by the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Defenders of enhanced interrogation often justify the use of such techniques based on military necessity and efficacy. In this essay, Benjamin Farley argues that by relying on military necessity, defenders of enhanced interrogation techniques are actually relying on kriegsraison'a long-discredited military doctrine that holds that the laws of war may be overcome in the face of extreme danger or simply to achieve the object of the …

Links Among Inflammation, Sexual Activity And Ovulation Evolutionary Trade-Offs And Clinical Implications, Tierney K. Lorenz, Carol M. Worthman, Virginia J. Vitzthum

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Background and objectives: We examined a mechanism that may coordinate trade-offs between reproduction and immune response in healthy women, namely, changes in inflammation across the ovarian cycle.

Methodology: We investigated C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammation marker, across two consecutive ovarian cycles in 61 Bolivian women. Participants provided saliva samples every other day, and dried blood spots on 5–6 days spread across weeks 2–3 of each cycle. Cycles were characterized as ovulatory/ anovulatory based on profiles of reproductive hormones. Participants also reported whether they were sexually partnered with a male or sexually abstinent during the study.

Results: High early-cycle, but not …

Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) Mimics Cocaine In Its Physiological And Behavioral Effects But Induces Distinct Changes In Nac Glucose, Ken T. Wakabayashi, Suelynn E. Ren, Eugene A. Kiyatkin Jan 2015

Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) Mimics Cocaine In Its Physiological And Behavioral Effects But Induces Distinct Changes In Nac Glucose, Ken T. Wakabayashi, Suelynn E. Ren, Eugene A. Kiyatkin

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) is generally considered to be a more potent cocaine-like psychostimulant, as it shares a similar pharmacological profile with cocaine and induces similar physiological and locomotor responses. Recently, we showed that intravenous cocaine induces rapid rise in nucleus accumbens (NAc) glucose and established its relation to neural activation triggered by the peripheral drug actions. This study was conducted to find out whether MDPV, at a behaviorally equivalent dose, shares a similar pattern of NAc glucose dynamics. Using enzyme-based glucose sensors coupled with amperometery in freely moving rats, we found that MDPV tonically decreases NAc glucose levels, a response that …

Negative Urgency And Emotion Regulation Strategy Use: Associations With Displaced Aggression, Jillian Panuzio Scott, David Dilillo, Rosalita C. Maldonado, Laura E. Watkins Jan 2015

Negative Urgency And Emotion Regulation Strategy Use: Associations With Displaced Aggression, Jillian Panuzio Scott, David Dilillo, Rosalita C. Maldonado, Laura E. Watkins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The numerous public health consequences of interpersonal aggression highlight the necessity of a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing its perpetration. This study examined direct and interactive associations between negative urgency and emotion regulation strategy use in predicting displaced aggression under conditions of negative mood. Participants were 197 male and female undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to employ either cognitive reappraisal or expressive suppression in response to a negative mood induction. Immediately afterward, participants engaged in an analog displaced aggression task. Results revealed direct, positive associations between negative urgency and aggression. In addition, the use of suppression was associated with …

From Sex Objects To Human Beings: Masking Sexual Body Parts And Humanization As Moderators To Women’S Objectification, Philippe Bernard, Sarah Gervais, Jill Allen, Alice Delmée, Olivier Klein Jan 2015

From Sex Objects To Human Beings: Masking Sexual Body Parts And Humanization As Moderators To Women’S Objectification, Philippe Bernard, Sarah Gervais, Jill Allen, Alice Delmée, Olivier Klein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Recent studies have shown that sexualized female bodies are objectified at a cognitive level. Research using the body-inversion recognition task, a robust indicator of configural (vs. analytic processing) within cognitive psychology, shows that for sexualized female bodies, people recognize upright and inverted bodies similarly rather than recognizing upright bodies better than inverted bodies (i.e., an inversion effect). This finding suggests that sexualized female bodies, like objects, are recognized analytically (rather than configurally). Nonetheless, it remains unclear when and why sexualized female bodies are objectified at a basic cognitive level. Grounded in objectification theory, the present experiments examine moderating factors that …

Repeated Administration Of Aripiprazole Produces A Sensitization Effect In The Suppression Of Avoidance Responding And Phencyclidine-Induced Hyperlocomotion And Increases D2 Receptor-Mediated Behavioral Function, Jun Gao, Rongyin Qin, Ming Li Jan 2015

Repeated Administration Of Aripiprazole Produces A Sensitization Effect In The Suppression Of Avoidance Responding And Phencyclidine-Induced Hyperlocomotion And Increases D2 Receptor-Mediated Behavioral Function, Jun Gao, Rongyin Qin, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study investigated how repeated administration of aripiprazole (a novel antipsychotic drug) alters its behavioral effects in two behavioral tests of antipsychotic activity and whether this alteration is correlated with an increase in dopamine D2 receptor function. Male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were first repeatedly tested with aripiprazole (3, 10 and 30 mg/kg, subcutaneously (sc)) or vehicle in a conditioned avoidance response (CAR) test or a phencyclidine (PCP) (3.20 mg/kg, sc)-induced hyperlocomotion test daily for five consecutive days. After 2–3 days of drug-free retraining or resting, all rats were then challenged with aripiprazole (1.5 or 3.0 mg/kg, sc). Repeated …

Examining The Reinforcement-Enhancement Effects Of Phencyclidine And Its Interactions With Nicotine On Lever-Pressing For A Visual Stimulus, Natashia Swalve, Scott T. Barrett, Rick A. Bevins, Ming Li Jan 2015

Examining The Reinforcement-Enhancement Effects Of Phencyclidine And Its Interactions With Nicotine On Lever-Pressing For A Visual Stimulus, Natashia Swalve, Scott T. Barrett, Rick A. Bevins, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Nicotine is a widely-abused drug, yet its primary reinforcing effect does not seem potent as other stimulants such as cocaine. Recent research on the contributing factors toward chronic use of nicotine-containing products has implicated the role of reinforcement-enhancing effects of nicotine. The present study investigates whether phencyclidine (PCP) may also possess a reinforcement-enhancement effect and how this may interact with the reinforcement-enhancement effect of nicotine. PCP was tested for two reasons: 1) it produces discrepant results on overall reward, similar to that seen with nicotine and 2) it may elucidate how other compounds may interact with the reinforcement-enhancement of nicotine. …

Adolescent Olanzapine Sensitization Is Correlated With Hippocampal Stem Cell Proliferation In A Maternal Immune Activation Rat Model Of Schizophrenia, Shinnyi Chou, Sean Jones, Ming Li Jan 2015

Adolescent Olanzapine Sensitization Is Correlated With Hippocampal Stem Cell Proliferation In A Maternal Immune Activation Rat Model Of Schizophrenia, Shinnyi Chou, Sean Jones, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous work established that repeated olanzapine (OLZ) administration in normal adolescent rats induces a sensitization effect (i.e. increased behavioral responsiveness to drug re-exposure) in the conditioned avoidance response (CAR) model. However, it is unclear whether the same phenomenon can be detected in animal models of schizophrenia. The present study explored the generalizability of OLZ sensitization from healthy animals to a preclinical neuroinflammatory model of schizophrenia in the CAR. Maternal immune activation (MIA) was induced via polyinosinic:polycytidilic acid (PolyI:C) administration into pregnant dams. Behavioral assessments of offspring first identified decreased maternal separation-induced pup ultrasonic vocalizations and increased amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion in animals …

The Value Of Captains’ Behavioral Choices In The Success Of The Surfclam (Spisula Solidissima) Fishery On The U.S. Mid-Atlantic Coast: A Model Evaluation, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klinck, Daphne M. Munroe, Eileen E. Hofmann, Paula Moreno, Roger Mann Jan 2015

Hofmann, Paula Moreno, Roger Mann

CCPO Publications

The response of the surfclam Spisula solidissima to warming of the Mid-Atlantic Bight is manifested by recession of the southern and inshore boundary of the clam’s range. This phenomenon has impacted the fishery through the closure of southern ports and the movement of processing capacity north, impacts that may require responsive actions on the part of fishery captains to mitigate a decline in fishery performance otherwise ineluctably accompanying this shift in range. The purpose of this study was to evaluate options in the behavioral repertoire of captains that might provide mitigation. A model capable of simulating a spatially and temporally …

Grounding Access To Justice Theory And Practice In The Experiences Of Women Abused By Their Intimate Partners, Janet Mosher Jan 2015

Grounding Access To Justice Theory And Practice In The Experiences Of Women Abused By Their Intimate Partners, Janet Mosher

Articles & Book Chapters

For women seeking to extricate themselves from the web of entrapment woven together by the multiple threads that make up the coercive control repertoire of their abusive intimate partners, it is often difficult to avoid engagement with legal systems. Yet, the legal systems they encounter—criminal, family, child welfare, immigration among them—are frequently unwelcoming (if not hostile), controlling, demeaning, fragmented and contradictory. While there has been a recent explosion of interest in “access to justice,” little attention has been paid to how we might conceptualize access to justice in a manner that speaks meaningfully to the circumstances of women who experience …

Creating 3d Foldable Papercraft From Dynamically Generated Scalable Vector, Daniel Slaughter Jan 2015

Creating 3d Foldable Papercraft From Dynamically Generated Scalable Vector, Daniel Slaughter

Technical Library

This project demonstrates the advantages of using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) over traditional image types (JPEG, GIF, PNG, etc.) for 3D modeling on the Web. The project uses an SVG to dynamically update the colors and layers, and apply it as a texture on a 3D model. Since the 3D model is based on a 2D texture, the project also demonstrates how to print and fold it back into a 3D papercraft.

The Complexity Of Coherence: Justice Lebel’S Administrative Law, Lorne Sossin Jan 2015

The Complexity Of Coherence: Justice Lebel’S Administrative Law, Lorne Sossin

Articles & Book Chapters

Justice LeBel carved out a distinctive approach to Administrative Law, one characterized by the search for analytic coherence in a field defined by its diversity. Beginning with concurring judgements in Chamberlain (2002) and CUPE v. City of Toronto (2003), Justice LeBel took issue with the prevailing approach to the standard of review (both its methodology and application) on the grounds of coherence, predictability and workability. In Dunsmuir (2008), Justice LeBel was able to pursue the simplicity, transparency and coherence he believed necessary to reinvigorate Canadian Administrative Law. This study explores the evolution of Justice LeBel's vision of Administrative Law, and …

Notions Of Reproductive Harm In Canadian Law: Addressing Exposures To Household Chemicals As Reproductive Torts, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Alana Cattapan, Mark Pioro Jan 2015

Notions Of Reproductive Harm In Canadian Law: Addressing Exposures To Household Chemicals As Reproductive Torts, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Alana Cattapan, Mark Pioro

Articles & Book Chapters

Mounting scientific evidence is suggesting that various synthetic chemicals are ubiquitous in the household and natural environment, and are affecting reproductive health in humans. Yet litigation in response to exposure to harmful chemicals has had limited success. This is in large part because causation is often difficult to prove, as exposure often occurs over long periods of time, and the sources of suspected chemical agents are ubiquitous and/or diffuse. In light of these challenges, there is a need to consider new legal strategies to confront these harms.

This article examines the potential for prenatal exposure to harmful chemicals to be …

Acclimation, Adaptation, Traits And Trade-Offs In Plankton Functional Type Models: Reconciling Terminology For Biology And Modelling, Kevin J. Flynn, Michael St. John, John A. Raven, David O. F. Skibinski, J. Icarus Allen, Aditee Mitra, Eileen E. Hofmann Jan 2015

Acclimation, Adaptation, Traits And Trade-Offs In Plankton Functional Type Models: Reconciling Terminology For Biology And Modelling, Kevin J. Flynn, Michael St. John, John A. Raven, David O. F. Skibinski, J. Icarus Allen, Aditee Mitra, Eileen E. Hofmann

CCPO Publications

We propose definitions in terminology to enhance ongoing collaborations between biologists and modellers on plankton ecology. Organism "functional type" should refer to commonality in ecology not biogeochemistry; the latter is largely an emergent property of the former, while alignment with ecology is also consistent with usage in terrestrial science. Adaptation should be confined, as in genetics, to consideration of species inter-generational change; most so-called "adaptive" plankton models are thus acclimative, modifying vital rates in response to stimuli. Trait trade-off approaches should ideally only be considered for describing intra-generational interactions; in applications between generations, and certainly between unrelated species, such concepts …

The Effect Of Parental Size On Spermatophore Production, Egg Quality, Fertilization Success, And Larval Characteristics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Mark J. Butler Iv, Alison Macdiarmid, Gaya Gnanalingam Jan 2015

The Effect Of Parental Size On Spermatophore Production, Egg Quality, Fertilization Success, And Larval Characteristics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Mark J. Butler Iv, Alison Macdiarmid, Gaya Gnanalingam

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The average size of spiny lobsters (Decapoda; Palinuridae) has decreased worldwide over the past few decades. Market forces coupled with minimum size limits compel fishers to target the largest individuals. Males are targeted disproportionately as a consequence of sexual dimorphism in spiny lobster size (i.e. males grow larger than females) and because of protections for ovigerous females. Therefore, overexploitation of males has led to sperm limitation in several decapod populations with serious repercussions for reproductive success. In the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, little is known about the effect of reduced male size on fertilization success or the role …

A Biblical And Missiological Framework For Cross-Cultural Mission: A Case Study Of The Lobi Funeral Rites In Burkina Faso, Boubakar Sanou Jan 2015

A Biblical And Missiological Framework For Cross-Cultural Mission: A Case Study Of The Lobi Funeral Rites In Burkina Faso, Boubakar Sanou

Dissertations

Problem

Converts to Christianity in traditional contexts often face pressure to continue traditional rituals and practices which sometimes contain unbiblical elements. Non-selective performance of traditional practices can produce dual allegiance and syncretism. Such is the case with Lobi Seventh-day Adventists concerning their traditional funeral rites of passage. Some core elements of these traditional funeral rites, in which all community members are expected to fully participate, conflict with biblical teachings on the human condition after death.

Method

This dissertation starts by laying the theoretical and theological basis for addressing the problem. The dissertation then uses ethnographic research of funeral rites among …

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

There is a strong need to increase the number of undergraduate students who pursue careers in science to provide the “fuel” that will power a science and technology–driven U.S. economy. Prior research suggests that both evidence-based teaching methods and early undergraduate research experiences may help to increase retention rates in the sciences. In this study, we examined the effect of a program that included 1) a Summer enrichment 2-wk minicourse and 2) an authentic Fall research course, both of which were designed specifically to support students' science motivation. Undergraduates who participated in the pharmacology-based enrichment program significantly improved their knowledge …
