Compression Of Climate Data Through Artificial Neural Networks, Astha Puri
Compression Of Climate Data Through Artificial Neural Networks, Astha Puri
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Lately, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of climate monitoring
stations in various parts of the country producing abundant climate data. Among climate data parameters, humidity and temperature are the two parameters influencing hydrological and agricultural processes, weather monitoring, and having critical effect on living organisms. As more data is being generated over time, there is a strong need to develop compression methods for efficient transfer and storage of this data.
The main goal of this thesis is to perform compression of humidity and temperature
data via prediction. As these are critical components of climate, it is …
Ediacaran Ocean Redox Evolution, Swapan Kumar Sahoo
Ediacaran Ocean Redox Evolution, Swapan Kumar Sahoo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The relative role that environmental versus intrinsic biological factors played in
shaping the history of life on Earth is a fundamental but unanswered question in the
natural sciences. Most famously, it has been heavily debated if the emergence and
diversification of early animals during the Ediacaran Period (ca. 635–541 Ma) was tied to
a rise in atmospheric-oceanic oxygen levels. Temporally discontinuous geochemical data and patchy fossil record in literature are inadequate to chart the Ediacaran redox history and its causal relationship with the biotic evolution. My PhD study aims for a multiproxy geochemical record within a well-established stratigraphic framework of …
Differences In Absenteeism Severity Among Community Youth, Kyleigh Kay Sheldon
Differences In Absenteeism Severity Among Community Youth, Kyleigh Kay Sheldon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study examined the relationship between school absenteeism severity and specific clinical and family variables in 118 middle and high school youth aged 11-19 years recruited from two truancy settings. The primary aim was to determine specific clinical and family variables that may be predictive of absenteeism severity in community youth. A secondary aim was to examine the level of absenteeism that warrants the most clinical concern. Hypotheses for the proposed study were based on the premise that characteristics of a community sample of youth with problematic absenteeism would generally resemble those identified in previous clinical samples. The first set …

A Framework For A Multi-Year Development Program Targeting High Potential Individuals In The Alaska Oil And Gas Industry, Ryan Loomis
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The Alaska Oil & Gas industry has a limited labor pool which creates a high demand for talented individuals. As a result competition is fierce among the companies in the Alaska's Oil and Gas industry. Furthermore, companies devote considerable resources to recruiting and training talent, only to see individuals leave for a competitor or Alaska altogether; individuals who exhibit potential for leadership are difficult to retain. Individuals with experience in all aspects of Arctic projects, from engineering through operations, are in high demand. Despite this, some of largest employers in Alaska do not have solidified long term programs for developing …
Public Trust Doctrine Implications Of Electricity Production, Lance Noel, Jeremy Firestone
Public Trust Doctrine Implications Of Electricity Production, Lance Noel, Jeremy Firestone
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
The public trust doctrine is a powerful legal tool in property law that requires the sovereign, as a trustee, to protect and manage natural resources. Historically, the public trust doctrine has been used in relationship to navigable waterways and wildlife management. Despite electricity production’s impact on those two areas and the comparatively smaller impacts of renewable energy, electricity production has garnered very little public trust doctrine attention. This Article examines how electricity production implicates the public trust doctrine, primarily through the lens of four states—California, Wisconsin, Hawaii, and New Jersey—and how it would potentially apply to each state’s electricity planning …

Prey Size And Dietary Niche Of Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat (Corynorhinus Rafinesquii), Luke E. Dodd, Michael J. Lacki, Joseph S. Johnson, Lynne K. Rieske
Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications
Bats in the genus Corynorhinus possess a suite of morphological characters that permit them to effectively use both gleaning and aerial-hawking foraging strategies to capture Lepidoptera. Consequently, they occupy a specialized feeding niche within North American bat assemblages and are of particular interest for dietary studies. We collected fecal pellets from a colony of C. rafinesquii (Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat) at Mammoth Cave National Park during August–October 2011 and amplified cytochrome-c oxidase subunit 1 fragments of prey from these pellets. We used the Barcode of Life Database to identify prey, and evaluated the size of prey species based on published values. …

An Evaluation Of The Disposition Of R941000, A Tetrazolone-Telmisartan Analog: A Case Study Of The Suitability Of Tetrazolone As A Carboxylic Acid Bioisostere, Ryan Brant Murray
An Evaluation Of The Disposition Of R941000, A Tetrazolone-Telmisartan Analog: A Case Study Of The Suitability Of Tetrazolone As A Carboxylic Acid Bioisostere, Ryan Brant Murray
Master's Theses
Carboxylic acids are ubiquitous in medicinal compounds, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, statins, hypertensives, and anticoagulants. Despite their prolific use, unfavorable characteristics such as metabolic instability, poor membrane permeability, and toxicity have been associated with this moiety in some instances. Bioisosteres have been employed to attenuate these issues. However, bioisostere use can alter drug potency and disposition. Recently, our company demonstrated the feasibility of the tetrazolone moiety as a carboxylic acid bioisostere for the angiotensin II antagonist telmisartan. R941000 (telmisartan-tetrazolone analog) was a potent in vitro inhibitor of angiotensin II and possessed a similar disposition to telmisartan. To the best of …

Geotrichum species have been rarely reported as the cause of sepsis, disseminated infection in immunosuppressed patients. The patient we describe developed indolent endophthalmitis four months after her routine right eye cataract surgery. The intraoperative sample from right vitreous fluid grew Geotrichum candidum. The patient underwent vitrectomy, artificial lens explantation and intravitreal injection of amphotericin B followed by oral voriconazole. Despite these interventions, she underwent enucleation. This is the first published case of Geotrichum candidum endophthalmitis.

Hero, Savage, Or Equal? Representations Of The Moral Personhood Of Pacific Islanders In Hollywood Movies, David Lipset
Hero, Savage, Or Equal? Representations Of The Moral Personhood Of Pacific Islanders In Hollywood Movies, David Lipset
Pacific Studies
This essay explores the theme of moral agency in cinematic representations of Pacific Islanders. Drawing on anthropological theories, the essay argues that moral personhood is a socially conferred status. Hollywood films often strip Pacific Islanders of moral agency, portraying them as passive or incapable of ethical discernment, while reserving such agency for Western characters. This cinematic imbalance is framed as a form of cultural dispossession and colonial narrative control. The essay thus critiques the broader implications of how moral accountability and personhood are distributed across cultural lines in film.
Sickeningly Sweet: Analysis And Solutions For The Adverse Dietary Consequences Of European Agricultural Law, Emile K. Aguirre
Sickeningly Sweet: Analysis And Solutions For The Adverse Dietary Consequences Of European Agricultural Law, Emile K. Aguirre
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Sixty-nine percent of adults in the United States, sixty-four percent in the United Kingdom, and over one-third worldwide are overweight or obese. These staggering figures continue to grow, with accompanying emotional, physical, and economic consequences, both for individuals and society as a whole. The role law plays in facilitating this global trend is significant, and yet puzzlingly, little recognized or understood The current food system is profoundly structurally flawed: it establishes unhealthy dietary behaviors as the default option for consumers. This Article is the first to examine how agricultural law has facilitated these unhealthier diets for the past fifty years, …

Man's Best Friend? Fda Adopts New Rule In Wake Of Pet Deaths, But Will It Have A Significant Impact On The Pet Food Industry?, Amanda Paige Marcum
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Eight years after the largest pet food recall in U.S. history,' pet owners are still grappling with mysterious pet illnesses and deaths associated with commercial pet food. This comment discusses a number of issues related to the Food Safety Modernization Act ("FSMA") . First, it looks at a brief history of pet food industry regulation. Second, it examines the mystery of pet deaths related to jerky treats made in China. Third, it discusses recent developments in the law in response to those pet deaths. Fourth, it considers the implications of the rule and how it will affect the standards applicable …

Mediating The Gm Foods Debate: Lessons From The Enduring Conflict Framework, Lisa F. Clark, Michaela J. Keet, Camille D. Ryan
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Critics of the commercialization of Genetically Modified (GM) foods in Canada and the United States oppose the economic and political forces that create and approve the technology: the industry that develops it and the governments that approve its use. The conventional narrative pits the concerned public, labeled "anti-GM," against the "pro-GM" interests of industry supported by business-friendly governments. Based on this binary view of the interests and motivations of stakeholders, conflict between government and industry appears minimal and regulatory frameworks for genetically engineered crops look as though they are primarily designed to facilitate those technologies. This paper refocuses the current …

“A Difficult And Dangerous Thing”: Religious Reform In Late Medieval Ulm, 1434-1532, Jamie Mccandless
Dissertations
This work examines the relationship between mendicant Orders and the city council of Ulm in the period of religious reforms from the fifteenth century to the early Reformation in the sixteenth century. It challenges the view that the Observant reforms were unsuccessful because they failed to reform substantially their Orders, that their reforms were too conservative to respond to current trends in religion, or that they failed to prevent, in some way, the development of the antifratneral or anticlerical policies of the Reformation. This work also considers that nature of the Observant reforms themselves, the problems that religious Order’s had …
Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Keith B. Pfannenstiel
Effects Of Resistance Exercise Training On Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Keith B. Pfannenstiel
Dissertations
In recent decades cancer survivorship has steadily increased; however, the adverse side effects associated with chemotherapy treatment can diminish a patient’s overall quality of life. One of the most effective and widely used chemotherapeutic agents is doxorubicin (DOX). Though highly effective, its use is limited by a dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. While it is known that exercise preconditioning with endurance training models provide a cardioprotective effect to DOX treatment, little focus has been placed on the effects of a resistance training (RT) model on DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of a 12-week RT model …
Effects Of Exercise Training And Doxorubicin On Myogenic Regulatory Factors, Colin Joseph Quinn
Effects Of Exercise Training And Doxorubicin On Myogenic Regulatory Factors, Colin Joseph Quinn
Dissertations
Doxorubicin (DOX) is a widely used anthracycline antibiotic used to treat a number of hematological and solid tumor cancers. Dosage; however, is limited due to its toxic effects in healthy tissues. Negative consequences include myotoxicity in skeletal muscle, which may limit mobility and activities of daily living. The capacity for skeletal muscular regeneration relies heavily of the activity of myogenic regulatory factor (MRF) proteins. In vitro experiments with DOX depress expression of MRFs but in vivo treatment may elicit different responses. Endurance exercise has been shown to elevate MRF expression, and may preserve MRFs following in vivo DOX-treatment. Purpose: To …

"Speak, Hannah, And Do Not Be Silent": Pseudo-Philo's Deconstruction Of Violence In Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum 50-51, Benjamin J. Lappenga
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This article argues that the movement from Hannah’s silent prayer in 50.5 (‘Hannah did not want to pray out loud’) to her bold declaration in 51.5 (‘I will speak my words openly’) interrupts a narrative trajectory involving violent zeal in Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum. Throughout the narrative, the prayers of key individuals for God’s merciful action on behalf of the people are rendered efficacious by acts of zeal (zelus) that are both public and violent (47.1–3). By contrast, Hannah’s act of silent prayer (framed as ‘zeal’ in 50.5) is accepted as the accompanying act for the people’s prayer (51.2). This vicarious …

Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This paper begins from one of the most commonly found questions in phenomenology, “What is Phenomenlogy?”, to argue that phenomenology is a trans-disciplinary approach to engaging with the products of human culture. This approach is characterized by paying particular attention to the distinction between facticity and transcendence within “lived experience” so as to help us better articulate and evaluate the promises that animate every human institution. Such a task necessarily requires inter-disciplinary input and helps us engage in our lives—in our shared cultural life—differently.
A Regional Approach To Analysis Of Food Security Framework And Policies Of The Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas), Hannah Elizabeth Shear
A Regional Approach To Analysis Of Food Security Framework And Policies Of The Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas), Hannah Elizabeth Shear
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Food security is always a concern for consumers, but especially for those in West Africa, where the population of food insecure people has continued to grow over the past decade despite attempts by initiatives such as the World Food Program and the establishment of Millennium Development Goals. The people of West Africa are subject to repetitive natural disasters and are often in political upheaval. Many economic policies have been established to mitigate the impact that production disasters have on the consumers; one of these policies is the utilization of regional food reserves.
In 2010, the Economic Community of West African …

Mechanisms And Intervention Strategies For Alcohol And Hiv-Antiretroviral Therapy-Induced Liver Injury., Hridgandh Donde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic alcohol consumption is a leading cause of liver disease and liver-related death worldwide. Alcoholic liver disease includes, hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis and ultimately fibrosis and cirrhosis. Emerging evidence has established the important role of the “gut-liver” axis in the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Our recent work indicated that chronic alcohol induced perturbations in the gut microbiome and consequent changes in fatty acids have a major impact on the development of intestinal barrier dysfunction and ALD. The aim of this study was to investigate whether treatment with tributyrin - a butyrate prodrug results in protection against ALD in terms …
