Effects Of Dissonance And Disruption On Risky Decisions, Wyn E. Taylor
Effects Of Dissonance And Disruption On Risky Decisions, Wyn E. Taylor
Psychology Theses - Archive
All choices develop first from the basic sensory stimuli to which our systems attend, consciously and unconsciously. The cognitive processes which form the basis of decision- making and contextual shifting require attention to both novel and familiar environmental features; from the overwhelming stimulus that assault our senses, we must figure out which environmental features are safe to ignore and those to which we must attend. Separate fast, emotional and slower rational decision processes described by a number of dual-processing theories have found compelling support in neuroscience research examining selective attention gating mechanisms. Indeed, these two systems appear to exert substantial …

Information Technology For Development In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises, Jie Xiong, Sajda Qureshi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Development is a concept that is often used to describe growth in organizations and the regions in which they reside. While research in Information Systems (IS) recognizes the importance of Information Technology (IT) in improving the organizational performance, a great deal of emphasis is given towards understanding large organizations. While social-economic development and transformation relies on new technological infrastructures and organizational changes, there is still a weak link between the organization studies with Information Technology (IT) as it relates to the growth of organizations. It appears that a greater research focus is needed in understanding the use of IT in …
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Dust Containing Platinum Group Elements On Bacterial Growth, Oxidative Stress Sensitivity And Biofilm Formation, Mohammed Olufemi Suraju
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Dust Containing Platinum Group Elements On Bacterial Growth, Oxidative Stress Sensitivity And Biofilm Formation, Mohammed Olufemi Suraju
Theses (Pre-2016)
The rising concentrations of Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) in the environment have raised serious concerns about their physiological impact. Some of the consequences of PGE exposures are known to include platinosis (which is characterized by extreme wheezing and sneezing), increased sensitivity to allergens and diarrhea. Currently, it is not known if dust containing PGEs are a bonafide microbial stress agent or if they. have any impact on microbes. Here, it was demonstrated by analysis of growth, oxidative stress sensitivity, and biofilm production assays that dust containing PGEs (house and road dust) are bonafide microbial stress agents. In addition, it was …
Sex-Associated Mitochondrial Genes: Tools For Understanding Unionid Reproduction And Development, Amy Louise Maynard
Sex-Associated Mitochondrial Genes: Tools For Understanding Unionid Reproduction And Development, Amy Louise Maynard
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Gonochoristic species of the bivalve order Unionida possess two types of mitochondria. The female-inherited mitochondria (F-mt) is found in the somatic cells of both sexes, while male-inherited mitochondria (M-mt) is found in the male gonad. These mitochondria possess different open reading frames (M-ORF or F-ORF respectively). Previous studies suggested that two types of sperm might exist, each carrying one or the other mitochondrial haplotype, and it was hypothesized that the presence of either F-mt or M-mt in sperm may be involved in determination of offspring sex. I investigated this hypothesis in Bleedingtooth (Venustaconcha pleasii). Sperm samples were obtained from field-collected …
Systemic Insulin Sensitivity And Skeletal Muscle Akt Signaling In Rats Artificially Selected For Low And High Aerobic Capacity, Kyle Levi Fulghum
Systemic Insulin Sensitivity And Skeletal Muscle Akt Signaling In Rats Artificially Selected For Low And High Aerobic Capacity, Kyle Levi Fulghum
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The mechanism(s) linking physical inactivity, obesity, and type-II diabetes are unclear. I hypothesized low intrinsic aerobic capacity is associated with reduced systemic insulin sensitivity via skeletal muscle insulin signaling. After 34 generations of selective breeding, high aerobic capacity (HCR) rats exhibited an 8-fold increase in running distance vs low aerobic capacity (LCR) rats (n=14 per group). LCR rats had higher rates of weight gain vs HCR (p<0.05) though food consumption was constant (p=0.86) over a 12-week study. Rats were divided into 4 groups: 1) LCR-Sham Surgery, 2) LCR-Catheterization, 3) HCR-Sham Surgery or 4) HCR-Catheterization (n=7 per group). Euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamps on catheterized rats tested insulin sensitivity while sham LCR and HCR were used for basal tissue analysis. Plasma insulin levels did not differ during the clamps, but LCR required lower glucose infusion rates than HCR (p<0.05). Upon insulin stimulation, both absolute and normalized phospho-Akt(Ser473) of soleus muscle were significantly increased in HCR above basal group (p<0.05), but not in LCR. No difference was observed between insulin-stimulated phospho-Akt(Ser473) of HCR and LCR groups . These data support that LCR is linked to a reduction in insulin sensitivity in vivo without impairments of insulin-stimulated skeletal muscle phospho-Akt(Ser473) vs HCR rats.
In Vivo Periodical Monitoring Of Immune Cell Infiltration In Response To Feathers And Intramuscular Injection Of Ionps Using The Pulp (Dermis) Of Growing Feathers As Test Site Tissue In Chickens, Olfat Taleb Alaamri
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The applications of nanoparticles are growing, but little is known about their interactions with the immune system as most studies did not use suitable in vivo test systems. The purpose of these studies was to investigate the utility of chicken growing feathers as an in vivo test site for iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) interactions with the immune system. The first objective of this study was to monitor leukocyte infiltration into the growing feather pulp upon the administration of IONP and IO-mIgG preparations. The second objective was to test the utility of IONPs as vaccine adjuvants by monitoring primary and memory …

A Platform For Fast Detection Of Let-7 Micro Rna Using Polyaniline Fluorescence And Image Analysis Techniques, Partha P. Sengupta
A Platform For Fast Detection Of Let-7 Micro Rna Using Polyaniline Fluorescence And Image Analysis Techniques, Partha P. Sengupta
Master's Theses
The project describes a new strategy for transducing hybridization events through modulating intrinsic properties of the electroconductive polymer polyaniline (PANI). When DNA based probes electrostatically interact with PANI, its fluorescence properties are increased, a phenomenon that can be enhanced by UV irradiation. Hybridization of target nucleic acids results in dissociation of probes causing PANI fluorescence to return to basal levels. By monitoring restoration of base PANI fluorescence as little as 10-11 M (10 pM) of target oligonucleotides could be detected within 15 minutes of hybridization. Detection of complementary oligos was specific, with introduction of a single mismatch failing to …
Modeling Social Media Content With Word Vectors For Recommendation, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Modeling Social Media Content With Word Vectors For Recommendation, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In social media, recommender systems are becoming more and more important. Different techniques have been designed for recommendations under various scenarios, but many of them do not use user-generated content, which potentially reflects users’ opinions and interests. Although a few studies have tried to combine user-generated content with rating or adoption data, they mostly reply on lexical similarity to calculate textual similarity. However, in social media, a diverse range of words is used. This renders the traditional ways of calculating textual similarity ineffective. In this work, we apply vector representation of words to measure the semantic similarity between text. We …

Happiness In Modern Society: Why Intelligence And Ethnic Composition Matter, Satoshi Kanazawa, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Recent developments in evolutionary psychology suggest that living among others of the same ethnicity might make individuals happier and further that such an effect of the ethnic composition on life satisfaction may be stronger among less intelligent individuals. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health showed that White Americans had significantly greater life satisfaction than all other ethnic groups in the US and this was largely due to the fact that they were the majority ethnic group; minority Americans who lived in counties where they were the numerical majority had just as much life satisfaction as White Americans …

Low-Dose Versus Standard-Dose Tissue Plasminogen Activator In Acute Ischemic Stroke In Asian Populations: A Meta-Analysis., Meng-Dong Liu, Wei-Dong Ning, Ren-Cong Wang, Wei Chen, Yang Yang, Yan Lin, Da-Hai Hu, Wayne Bond Lau, Yan Qu
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Recent studies have investigated the most efficacious dose of intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (IV-tPA) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. There remains no definitive consensus concerning the superior efficacious IV-tPA dose (standard- vs. low-dose), prompting us to perform a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy and safety profile of standard- versus low-dose IV-tPA.We identified relevant studies pertaining to the specific aim of our meta-analysis by searching PubMed and EMBASE (January 1990-September 2015) Either a fixed- or random-effects model was employed (dependent upon data heterogeneity) to analyze the efficacy and safety outcome.Ten cohort studies involving 4389 sum patients were included in the meta-analysis. …
The Effect Of Leucine Supplementation On Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Rats Fed A High-Fat Diet, David M. Skinner
The Effect Of Leucine Supplementation On Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Mitochondrial Protein Synthesis In Rats Fed A High-Fat Diet, David M. Skinner
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study aims to illuminate interaction between leucine supplementation and mitochondrial proteins concerned with synthesis and biogenesis. We hypothesized that supplementation with leucine will attenuate the weight gain of the high fat diet in comparison with the normal chow group, by enhancing mitochondrial biogenesis and content. We conducted a laboratory experiment using Western Blotting techniques to determine protein expression. Proteins of interest in this study include PGC-1α, COX-IV, TUFM, TFAM, and mtIF2. The findings from the research show a main effect of an increase in the expression of PGC-1 α in high fat diets. There was no difference in the …

Converging my various identities as artist, educator, firefighter and city employee I delved into the City of Boise’s LIV campaign. LIV’s intent is the reimagining of municipal government and its engagement with employees, residents, and business. I pursued three different projects: interning in Human Resources, sitting on the Vista revitalization committee, and coordinating art students with the Boise Farmers Market “Mobile Market” project. I found myself in a very Boise story. This project has several more years until it reaches a maturation point where the final outcomes are known.
My response is the visual documentation of the relationships formed and …
Communication Partner Experience In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Study, Pamela Charlie Marie Buckley
Communication Partner Experience In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Study, Pamela Charlie Marie Buckley
Dissertations
For the purpose of this dissertation, the term communication partner described any individual in a position to provide or support opportunities for communication. Communication partners have been discussed in current literature in the areas of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), severe disabilities, aphasia, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The role, characteristics, and responsibilities of a communication partner are most comprehensively described in the aphasia literature.
It is likely that individuals with ASD would have more opportunities for social interaction and engagement if supported by skilled and informed communication partners. The communicative success of individuals with ASD may depend on the …

© 2015 The Wilson Ornithological Society. The Military Macaw (Ara militaris) and the Great Green Macaw (A. ambiguus) are species whose close relationship is reflected in their morphological similarity as well as their geographic ranges. Military Macaws have a disjunct distribution, found in Mexico as well as several areas in South America, while Great Green Macaws have two or more disjunct populations from Honduras to eastern Ecuador. We used mitochondrial sequence data to examine the phylogenetic relationships between these two species, and also among representative samples across their ranges. Our data clearly support recognition of the two species as being …

Object Detection And Tracking In Wide Area Surveillance Using Thermal Imagery, Santosh Bhusal
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The main objective behind this thesis is to examine how existing vision-based detection and tracking algorithms perform in thermal imagery-based video surveillance. While color-based surveillance has been extensively studied, these techniques can not be used during low illumination, at night, or with lighting changes and shadows which limits their applicability. The main contributions in this thesis are (1) the creation of a new color-thermal dataset, (2) a detailed performance comparison of different color-based detection and tracking algorithms on thermal data and (3) the proposal of an adaptive neural network for false detection rejection.
Since there are not many publicly available …
The Painted Motifs Of Cypriot Ceramic Art: A Study Of Iconography & Identity, Paige Bockman
The Painted Motifs Of Cypriot Ceramic Art: A Study Of Iconography & Identity, Paige Bockman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The aim of this master’s thesis is to explore the iconography of Chalcolithic (c. 3900-2300 cal. BC) Cyprus using ceramic motifs and identify their potential use in revealing differences between the cultural identity present at archaeological sites, as well as the possible causes of such variation. By exploring the existence and origins of subtle differences between the iconographic repertoires of related sites, the study seeks a better understanding of the movement of both ideas and symbols, and how the meaning of symbols developed within the context of a site.
Currently, Cypriot Chalcolithic sites are believed to be largely homogeneous in …
The Influence Of Iron On Arctic Thule Migration Patterns, Alina T. Aquino
The Influence Of Iron On Arctic Thule Migration Patterns, Alina T. Aquino
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Arctic scholars have yet to fully understand the reasons behind the migration of Thule culture from the western to the eastern Arctic. This rapid movement across such a vast area into environmentally diverse regions marks a critical period of cultural change that is usually summarized by two theoretical positions. Ecological theories postulated environmental changes placed selective pressures on traditional food sources that required Thule hunters to follow migrating prey. Theories that focused on material acquisition alternately proposed the Thule followed the trail of meteoric iron eastward into northwestern Greenland.
This research sought to examine the eastward Thule migration from another …
Electronic Dance Music: From Deviant Subculture To Culture Industry, Christopher T. Conner
Electronic Dance Music: From Deviant Subculture To Culture Industry, Christopher T. Conner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Utilizing a mixed qualitative research methods design, including interviews, ethnographic field work, and analyzing historical documents, I examine the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) subculture, since its inception in the late 80s as a deviant subculture. Previous studies of raves and other music subcultures focus almost exclusively on the role of popularity in transforming the subculture. In this research, I found, in the case of EDM at least, a more complicated process in which structural factors such as mass media, public officials (politicians and law enforcement), and major music corporations played a prominent role in the transformation. Media coverage focused on …

Examining The Dynamics Of Infant Face Processing Using State Space Grids, Andrea Jane Kayl
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this investigation we examined the potential processes underlying infant preferences for and categorization of male and female faces as well as the outcome of these preferences. Infants with female primary caregivers exhibit preferences for same-race females over males and categorize females more readily than males. Little is known, however, about how infants may arrive at these collective preferences and categorization abilities. In research settings infants are exposed to novel stimuli in relatively short periods of time, and their experiences outside of the lab may be imposing structure onto their learning in lab settings. We used state space grids (SSGs) …
Differences In Disease Reporting: An Analysis Of State Reportable Conditions And Their Relationship To The Nationally Notifiable Conditions List, Brian Labus
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The basis of public health surveillance is the reporting of diseases and conditions to the health department by clinicians and laboratories. In the United States, over eighty diseases and conditions of national importance (e.g., tuberculosis, syphilis, and cancer) are included on the list of Nationally Notifiable Conditions (NNC) for submission to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by the states. The legal basis for disease reporting is found at the state level, where inconsistent laws may differ in terms of which conditions are reportable and their reporting process. The process by which states require the reporting of NNCs …

A Comparison Of Beliefs And Attitudes About Body Image, Eating And Weight Between Incarcerated And Non-~Incarcerated Females, Anne R. Lindsay
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Abstract
Incarceration and substance abuse are two of the largest public health issues in America. While the U.S. makes up only 5% of the world’s population, it accounts for 25% of its prisoners. Incarceration affects more than 2.2 million individuals who will eventually return to their families and communities with ongoing family, social and health issues. Women in prison are a particularly vulnerable and underserved population, generally of low education and socio-economic status and although they account for a small percent of the prison population, many are mothers of young children who are likely to become incarcerated themselves. Substance abuse …
