Quantum Field Theory In Coordinate Space, Ahmet Ozan Erdogan
Quantum Field Theory In Coordinate Space, Ahmet Ozan Erdogan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In order to provide a new coordinate-space perspective applicable to scattering amplitudes, in the first part of this dissertation, the structure of singularities in perturbative massless gauge theories is investigated in coordinate space. The pinch singularities in coordinate-space integrals occur at configurations of vertices which have a direct interpretation in terms of physical scattering of particles in real space-time in the same way as for the loop momenta in the case of momentum-space singularities. In the analysis of vertex functions in coordinate space, the well-known factorization into hard, soft, and jet functions is found. By power-counting arguments, it is found …

Double Longitudinal Helicity Asymmetries In Pion Production From Proton Collisions, Studies Of Relative Luminosity Determination, And The Impact On Determination Of The Gluon Spin In The Proton, Andrew Michael Manion
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC are being used to study the origin of proton spin, which arises from the spin and orbital angular momentum of its constituent quarks and gluons. Measurements at the PHENIX experiment at $\sqrt{s} = 200$~GeV of $A_{LL}^{\pi^0}$, the double longitudinal helicity asymmetry in neutral pion production, are used in global analyses of world polarized scattering data, where they are particularly important in constraining the sector of gluon polarization. These measurements have ruled out maximal gluonic spin contributions and are consistent with a small or zero contribution. In the latest measurements, the statistical precision of the data …
Systematic Studies Of Soft Direct Photon Production In Au+Au Collisions At Sqrt(S_Nn) = 200 Gev, Benjamin Bannier
Systematic Studies Of Soft Direct Photon Production In Au+Au Collisions At Sqrt(S_Nn) = 200 Gev, Benjamin Bannier
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Direct photons are produced during all stages of a heavy-ion collision. Due to their very small interaction cross section with the dense hadronic medium, they can escape the collision almost undisturbed and transport information about their production environment to a detector making them an excellent probe in heavy-ion physics. The observation of both a large yield and strong elliptical flow $v_2$ of soft direct photons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC has sparked a lot of interest. While a large yield seems to point towards abundant production from the early, hot stages of the interaction, large elliptical flow can be …
Oceanic And Atmospheric Influences On The Interannual Variability Of The Madagascar Phytoplankton Bloom, Lindsay Roupe
Oceanic And Atmospheric Influences On The Interannual Variability Of The Madagascar Phytoplankton Bloom, Lindsay Roupe
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Approximately every other year during the austral summer a larger phytoplankton bloom propagates off of the southeast tip of Madagascar. The cause of the interannual variability of this distinct oceanic feature remains unclear, so here we improve the analysis of the interannual variability of the bloom with a longer ocean color dataset, re-examine the existing mixed layer depth and iron fertilization hypotheses formerly used to explain bloom formation and analyze the variability in the larger ocean-atmosphere system in the region in relation to bloom formation. To resolve the forcings on the bloom, relevant satellite and reanalysis data were examined using …

Molecular Characterization Of Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx), A Thraustochytird Pathogen Of The Hard Clam, Mercenaria Mercenaria, Ewelina Rubin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The hard clam or northern quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria, is one of the most valuable seafood products in the United States. Severe episodes of hard clam mortality have been consistently associated with infections caused by a thraustochytrid parasite called Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX). Studies in the present dissertation examined the molecular bases of QPX virulence towards clams. Investigation of QPX transcriptome libraries generated a database of QPX putative virulence factors and other molecules potentially involved in interactions with the clam host. Multiple differential gene expression profiles were generated using oligoarray technology for QPX strains isolated from different geographic locations and for …
Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette
Nitrogen Loading To The South Shore, Eastern Bays, Ny: Sources, Impacts, And Management Options, Isabelle Stinnette
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The excessive delivery of nitrogen from land into coastal waters can lead to a host of environmental problems including algal blooms, hypoxic zones, habitat loss, and acidification. While many of these environmental problems have manifested themselves within Long Island's coastal bays, the quantity and sources of nitrogen are largely unknown in much of this region, making the development of effective management plans to ameliorate these problems exceedingly difficult. This study was designed to quantify nitrogen loads and sources to Moriches, Quantuck and Shinnecock Bays within the eastern extent of Long Island's South Shore Estuary Reserve. Further this study assessed water …

Evaluation Of Wrf Planetary Boundary Layer Schemes Over The Coastal Waters Of Southern New England, Matthew Joseph Sienkiewicz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Winds, temperatures and moisture in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) are often difficult for operational models to predict given the relatively sparse observations and that most model PBL parameterizations were developed over inland locations. Coastal marine layer forecasts are important for the forecasting of severe storms and wind energy resources in the highly populated coastal marine environment of the Northeast U.S. (NEUS). Mesoscale models are known to have large biases in wind speeds and temperatures at these lower levels over coastal waters. The goal of this project is to evaluate the performance of six PBL schemes in the Weather Research …
The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson
The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Exposing Zostera marina to fertilized porewater has been shown to increase vegetative shoot density and leaf growth rates, as well as affect morphological shoot characteristics including increasing leaf length, leaf area and the number of leaves per shoot. However, aside from changes in shoot density, records of morphological changes in reproductive shoots subjected to increased nutrient availability are lacking. To address this, five replicate ambient and nutrient enriched patches, each between 0.5 and 2.0 m2, were selected within a developing Z. marina meadow in Shinnecock Bay, NY. Fertilizer stakes, with a N:P:K of 15:3:3, were used to amend enriched patches …

The Impact Of The National Economy On Supreme Court Decision Making, Joshua Matthew Johnson
The Impact Of The National Economy On Supreme Court Decision Making, Joshua Matthew Johnson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Is the decision making of the Supreme Court of the United States influenced by the health of the national economy? In the development of the literature on the Supreme Court, scholars have mainly focused on how legal, attitudinal, and strategic considerations impact judicial decision making. There has been less work focusing on exogenous factors such as the economy. In this dissertation, I hypothesize that the Supreme Court is responsive to the national economy during multiple stages of the decision making process of the Court--case selection, voting, and the opinion stage. In a sense, I posit that the justices of the …

Ready, Set, Change: An Exploratory Case Study Of Readiness For Change Within Five New York State Voluntary Child Welfare Agencies, Jennette Allen-Mccombs
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Each year, significant financial resources are expended to implement new policies and programs in an attempt to facilitate organizational change (Fleming, Culler, McCorkle, Becker, & Ballard, 2011). In 2007, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) collaborated with Andrus Center for Learning and Innovation (ACLI) to implement the Sanctuary Model of organizational change within selected voluntary residential child welfare programs that serve youth with behavioral, emotional and social challenges. Since these organizations typically have bureaucratic structures in which culture is maintained through a set of rules and regulations, change may be particularly difficult (Dickinson & Perry, …
High-Resolution Methodology For Particle Size Analysis Of Naturally Occurring Sand Size Sediment Through Laser Diffractometry With Application To Sediment Cores: Kismet, Fire Island, New York, Kara Alexandra Dias
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The detailed methodological measurements of very fine-grained sediments by laser diffraction have been reported to yield a very low analytical uncertainty. When coarser grained samples are run under the methodology recommended for fine-grained sediments, there is variability between the measurements, especially in the size fraction greater than 200 micrometers. This study seeks to refine the standard operating procedures of laser diffraction for grain size analysis of sand sized sediment as well as quantify the associated analytical uncertainty. The influence of selected methodological aspects on the results of the particle size distribution were assessed and optimal machine parameters, suspension mediums and …

Refining Mid-Infrared Emission Spectroscopy As A Tool For Understanding Planetary Surface Mineralogy Through Laboratory Studies, Computational Models, And Lunar Remote Sensing Data, Jessica Anne Arnold
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Mid-infrared emissivity spectra, while useful for quantifying mineral abundance, are dependent on a variety of other factors, including grain size. At present, scattering models are not fully able reproduce this dependence, especially for very fine-grained powders (d~<60μ m) typical of planetary regolith. Previous studies have modeled emissivity spectra of mineral powders by using Mie single scattering theory coupled with a radiative transfer model, such as Hapke [1993]. Chapter 2 of this work uses multiple scattering T-matrix code (from Mackowski and Mishchenko, 2011) to calculate the scattering coefficients for a cluster of spheres, rather than a single sphere as in Mie theory. I acquired emissivity spectra of highly uniform silica glass spheres, normally used for sieve calibration, for comparison to modeled spectra. Then, I calculated optical constants of the glass from micro-FTIR reflectance spectra of polished grains mounted on a petrographic slide. Modeled emissivity spectra computed with this T-matrix/radiative transfer hybrid method show a marked improvement over Mie-radiative transfer hybrid models, especially for smaller grain sizes. The complex index of refraction (ñ =n+ik) as a function of wavelength, where n and k are often referred to as optical constants, is an essential input into radiative transfer models. Hence, quantitative estimates of mineral abundance from remote sensing data require that optical constants are known for a comprehensive set of relevant minerals. While many geologically abundant materials are monoclinic or triclinic, due to both the additional complexity of the models needed and the increased effort required to orient these samples, very few sets of optical constants have been measured for lower-symmetry minerals. Chapter 3 describes how optical constants were calculated from polarized mid-infrared reflectance spectra of oriented single-crystals of five natural samples in the monoclinic crystal system, which include four pyroxene samples and one orthoclase sample. Lastly, in Chapter 4, remote sensing emissivity data from the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment, along with lunar environment laboratory measurements of mineral mixtures, are used to establish constraints on the absolute abundance of olivine at sites where it has been detected by the visible/near-infrared instruments Moon Mineralogy Mapper and Kaguya Spectral Profiler. The two main results of this section are: 1) spectra do not mix linearly at these wavelengths for particles sizes typical of lunar regolith and 2) Diviner data are consistent with a wide range in olivine abundances at these sites. | 170 pages
Models And Numerical Algorithms For Hydrodynamics With Atomic Processes And High Energy Density Applications, Hyoungkeun Kim
Models And Numerical Algorithms For Hydrodynamics With Atomic Processes And High Energy Density Applications, Hyoungkeun Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The main goal of the research is the development of numerical equation of state model enabling hydrodynamic simulations of problems involving multiple ionization and it's application in the high energy density physics (HEDP) such as the plasma jet driven magnetoinertial fusion (PJMIF) concept and the pellet injection in Tokamak via simulations studies. For this goal, the mathematical models and numerical algorithms for ionization process has been developed, and they are demonstrated in several simulations with productive result. A numerical model for an average ionization equation-of-state (EOS) for high-Z plasmas undergoing multiple ionization processes has been developed by improving the classical …
Software Tools For Stochastic Simulations Of Turbulence, Ryan Kaufman
Software Tools For Stochastic Simulations Of Turbulence, Ryan Kaufman
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We present two software tools useful for the analysis of mesh based physics application data, and specifically for turbulent mixing simulations. Each has a broader, but separate scope, as we describe. Both features play a key role as we push computational science to its limits and thus the present work contributes to the frontier of research. The first tool is Wstar, a weak* comparison tool, which addresses the stochastic nature of turbulent flow. The goal is to compare underresolved turbulent data in convergence, parameter dependence, or validation studies. This is achieved by separating space-time data from state data (e.g. density, …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Abstract of the Dissertation A Tale of Two Movements? Gay Liberation and the Left in West Germany, 1969-1989 by Ronald Van Cleef Doctor of Philosophy in History Stony Brook University 2014 A Tale of Two Movements focuses on the Schwulenbewegung (gay liberation movement) in the Federal Republic of Germany between 1969 and 1989. The movement has been characterized by both activists and critics as bitterly divided between so called radicals who desired to join a larger social revolution against capitalism and integrationists who sought reforms through the existing system as an oppressed minority group. Similar critiques are sometimes applied to …
Mathematical Modeling Of G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Signaling Pathways, Tao Jiang
Mathematical Modeling Of G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Signaling Pathways, Tao Jiang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling plays an important role in converting extracellular stimuli into cellular responses. Many biological functions are regulated by GPCR signaling, and nearly 40\% of current pharmaceuticals target GPCRs. In this work, mathematical modeling is used to investigate the initial steps of GPCR signaling with two major aims: 1) to understand the causes for non-canonical signaling behaviors; 2) to understand how signaling specificity is reacted to in the individual reactions of the pathway. The classic ternary complex model describing the interaction between a single ligand, receptor and G-protein served as our basic model for the initial investigation. Dose …

The Dp Category And Serbian Nominal Structure, Ivana Laterza
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis investigates nominal structure in Serbian, focusing on the issue of DP paramaterization. Since the introduction of DP as a syntactic category in the late 1980s (Fukui and Speas (1986), Abney (1987)), various investigators have questioned its universality on the basis of " article-less" languages, such as Japanese and Serbian. Two proposals have emerged. The Universal DP-Hypothesis holds that all languages project DP (Progovac (1998), Rappaport (2001), Basic (2004), Cinque (2005), i.a.). The Parameterized DP-Hypothesis claims that languages without (definite) articles do not project DP (Fukui (1986), Corver (1992), Zlatic (1997), Boskovic (2005), Despic (2011), i.a.). The second view …

Consuming Modernity: Photography In Pre-Colonial Korea, 1876-1910, Heejeong Sohn
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Postcolonial studies have successfully unveiled the cultural, social, and political networks of imperial and colonial representations embedded in visual documents of the non-Western world. Within this context, the early photography of Korea has been presented as a cultural force imposed on Koreans in relation to colonialism and Orientalism. This dissertation rethinks the representational politics of early photography during the pre-colonial period of 1876 to 1910 by problematizing the master narratives and suggesting alternative ways to interpret this historical material. Through analyzing the historical contexts of photographic materials and practices, this dissertation argues that photography, as a device of cultural expression, …

This study investigates why and how bilinguals speakers tend to code switch on social media such as; Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Bilingual speakers who were born in the US, who adapted English as their second language or who have learned Spanish as their second language in school, usually tend to combine the two languages, English and Spanish, in order to get across their point of view to others. For this reason, this investigation was created to analyze how code- switching can influence people when it's exposed on media. There were three social medias with the total of 37 participants who …

This thesis investigates the causes of gender and number agreement errors in learners of both Arabic and Spanish as second languages. Data was collected from each of these groups during beginner level language courses at a university. There were a total of eight tests. The first six were adjective selection activities focusing on a specific noun phrase or sentence structure. The last two were written tests, elicited by images, where students had to produce their own nouns and adjectives. The common first language (L1) of the majority of participants is English, which lacks adjective agreement and does not have the …

Teaching And Learning In Fourth Space: Embodying Praxis, Becoming Role Model, Nicole Galante
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
If 21st century students can ask their mobile devices questions and receive nearly instant answers, how then can 21st century teachers enact an engaged pedagogy? One possibility is by learning with and in front of students, thus creating <&ldquo>fourth space<&rdquo>--a space in which teachers embody praxis and become simultaneous models of and participants in education. This dissertation provides a new framework for English Teacher Education that centers on fourth space and the ways that teachers and students can engage in critical contact zones from within it. Drawing on critical pedagogy, combining various perspectives about identity formation and reflection theories …&rdquo>&ldquo>

Structural And Electrochemical Studies Of High Voltage Na(Ni2/3sb1/3)O2 Cathodes For Secondary Na-Ion Batteries, Jeffrey Ma
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Lithium ion batteries have been dominating the energy field in energy storage with its efficiency and performance unmatched. However, the over-exhaustion of the limited amounts of lithium has been causing rising prices. In order to alleviate the use of lithium batteries, scientists have turned some focus to other energy storage alternatives, like sodium batteries. Sodium is abundant, affordable, and environmentally friendly. Sodium batteries have gravimetric energy density comparable to lithium batteries, and are promising for large scale energy grid storage. In this work, Na(Ni2/3Sb1/3)O2 have been synthesized and identified as a sodium battery cathode candidate. An ordered and disordered phase …

Beam Energy And System-Size Dependence Of The Space-Time Extent Of The Pion Emission Source Produced In Heavy-Ion Collisions, Alex Muu Mwai
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The primary goal of high-energy nuclear physics is to develop a thorough understanding of the QCD phase diagram: Its different phases, their boundaries, and the physics they define. Heavy-ion collisions reproduce at a microscale the conditions necessary to initiate the phase transitions of nuclear matter that are only possible at extreme temperatures (T) and baryon chemical potential (\mu_{B}). An important probe utilized in studies of the hot and dense matter created in heavy-ion collisions is the method of Hanbury-Brown and Twiss interferometry. The technique is useful in providing measurements in space and time of the pion emission sources at freeze-out. …

Neural Correlates And Peripheral Mirnas Associated With Stress-Related Telomere Shortening, Stephanie Izzi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Telomeres are repetitive nucleoprotein complexes at the ends of chromosomes that provide a protective cap for genomic DNA. Telomere shortening leads to cellular senescence or apoptosis. Accordingly, telomere length is considered both a mechanism and marker for aging. Increased exposure to chronic stress is associated with shorter telomere length. In addition, differences in stress reactivity have been associated with telomere length. Here I will describe several studies identifying neural circuits associated with such telomere shortening, an evaluation of saliva as an appropriate biomaterial to measure telomere length, and an exploration of the role of microRNAs as mediators of stress-related telomere …

The Secondary/Postsecondary Writing Gap: Obeying Standards, Striving For Authenticity, Kelly Ann Streibel
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In times of daunting new standards for high school learning outcomes, high stakes assessments often result in teaching to the test. This, in turn, tends to deny high school students sufficient training in academic writing for authentic audiences and real contexts. This thesis will examine the New York State Regents Exam to present evidence that unfortunately, authentic writing experiences hardly ever appear on state assessment tests. Although the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) claim college and career readiness can be evaluated by way of assessments, examples of the Regents Exam will support the theory that valued habits like curiosity creativity, …
