Differences In Mathematics And Literacy Achievement Between African American Males And Other 11th-Grade Students, Jeffery Flanigan
Differences In Mathematics And Literacy Achievement Between African American Males And Other 11th-Grade Students, Jeffery Flanigan
College of Education Dissertations
The gap in school performance between African American students and students of other subpopulations has shown up in a range of academic success measures including course grades, test scores, course selection, and college graduation rates (Johnston & Viadero 2000); college and high school grade point averages [GPAs] (Banks & Banks, 2004); and dropout rates (Gordon, 1999; Green, 2001; Irvine & Armento, 2001; Jencks & Phillips, 1998; Kober, 2001; Lee, 2002). These indicators all point to a disturbing pattern in the educational system and beg the question: What is going on with the education of African American males in the United …

A Comparison Of Passive And Active Acoustic Sampling For A Bat Community Impacted By White-Nose Syndrome, Laci S. Coleman, W. Mark Ford, Chris A. Dobony, Eric R. Britzke
KIP Articles
In the summers of 2011 and 2012, we compared passive and active acoustic sampling for bats at 31 sites at Fort Drum Military Installation, New York. We defined active sampling as acoustic sampling that occurred in 30-min intervals between the hours of sunset and 0200 with a user present to manipulate the directionality of the microphone. We defined passive sampling as acoustic sampling that occurred over a 12-h period (1900–0700 hours) without a user present and with the microphone set in a predetermined direction. We detected seven of the nine possible species at Fort Drum, including the federally endangered Indiana …
Front Tracking Method With High-Order Enhancement And Its Application In Two-Phase Micromixing Of Incompressible Viscous Fluids, Yijie Zhou
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We develop a front tracking method based on the hydrodynamic library FronTier for the solution of the governing equations of motion for two-phase micromixing of incompressible, viscous, liquid-liquid solvent extraction processes. The method is used for accurate simulation of the turbulent micromixing dynamics of an aqueous and an organic phase exposed to intense centrifugal force and shearing stress. The onset of mixing is the result of the combination of the classical Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. We demonstrate verification and convergence results for one-phase and unmixed, two-phase flows. For mixed, two-phase flow a mixing environment that emulates a sector of the …
Retrograde Ngf Signaling In Pain, Tanvir Khan
Retrograde Ngf Signaling In Pain, Tanvir Khan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a member of the nerurotrophin family that plays a crucial role during development. Although NGF was discovered because of its actions during development, it is now known to function throughout the life of the animal. NGF plays a profound role in nociception because its high affinity receptor, TrkA, is expressed in nociceptors. In mammals, NGF causes thermal hyperalgesia that develops within minutes (acute hyperalgesia) and lasts for several days (chronic hyperalgesia). While NGF-induced acute peripheral sensitization/hyperalgesia occurs via TRPV1 receptor activation, chronic hyperalgesia is thought to take place with a delay, caused by upregulation of …

Event-Based Modeling And Control Of An Advanced Manufacturing System, Yang Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Although the widely application of advanced IT technology has enabled production information to become increasingly transparent, detailed and real-time, the utilization of the information for system modeling and control remains largely unexplored. In fact, instantaneously transforming information gathered from a vast array of sources into useful knowledge for effective decision making has been identified as one of the six grand challenges in the vision for manufacturing 2020 and beyond. It is necessary to have a real-time integrated system modeling and control method, which utilizes the production information to quickly respond to unpredictable disturbance to manufacturing system and ensure smooth production …
Maintaining Stable Wireless Communication Connections Among Multiple Collaborative Mobile Robots By Intelligent Robot Motion Control, Xu Zhong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation addresses the critical issue of establishing and maintaining desired wireless communication connectivity in a team of collaborative mobile robots, which is highly demanded for reliable functioning of multi-robot systems but challenging in realistic environments. The signal propagation of wireless communications among mobile robots is affected by many issues, including the transmission power, distance, obstacles, robot movement, and other environmental conditions, which result in signal loss, attenuation, multi-path fading and shadowing. Consequently, the communication condition among mobile robots in a physical environment is usually unstable, and it is difficult to accurately predict the actual communication ranges of robots. We …
Protein Dimerization Mechanisms Study With Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Yuan Yao
Protein Dimerization Mechanisms Study With Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Yuan Yao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Protein dimerization is involved in many essential biological processes like gene expression, allosteric regulation, enzymatic activation and signal transduction. However, our understanding about dimerization mechanisms is limited despite of the progress made. In this work, we applied molecular dynamics simulation with all-atom structure-based model to the investigation often commonly studied regulatory dimers. Through the combinational analysis of intrinsic energy funnels, density of states, thermodynamic free energy landscapes, phi-values of transition states, and kinetic simulations, new and detailed mechanisms of dimerization and their coupling with monomer folding are revealed, in good agreements with existing experimental evidences and suggestions. We found five …

Graphene Nanoribbons Elicit Cell Specific Uptake And Drug Delivery Via Activation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors, Sayan Mullick Chowdhury
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Ligands such as peptides, antibodies or other epitopes bind and activate specific cell receptors, and can be employed for targeted cellular delivery of pharmaceuticals such as drugs, genes and imaging agents. In this dissertation, I investigate the in vitro and hematological compatibility of oxidized graphene nanoribbons, non-covalently functionalized with PEG-DSPE (1, 2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N[amino(polyethyleneglycol)]) (O-GNR-PEG-DSPE) and evaluate its potential as a drug delivery agent. Although, O-GNR-PEG-DSPE was found to interact with RBC membrane and induce structural changes in them, they did not affect other hematological parameters. In vitro studies showed that these particles activate epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) and elicit cell …
Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani
Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation focuses the lens of queer studies and trauma studies on YA literature published in the United States between 1960 and 2010 to demonstrate that authors embed cultural messages in YA texts. Those messages for YA readers intend to model behavior considered appropriate and teach about normative sex and gender roles. Individuals between the ages of 10 and 20 comprise YA readership, and the means of teaching these readers cultural norms include imagery and cautionary tales. The content of the literature inculcates views of acceptable behaviors with respect to sexuality and gender roles and generally conflates sex and gender. …
Exploring The Erp And Facial Response To Cocaine And Emotional Cues, Hojin Choi
Exploring The Erp And Facial Response To Cocaine And Emotional Cues, Hojin Choi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
With the advancement of affective computing technologies, spontaneous and complex emotions that were difficult or even impossible to recognize in the past are rapidly becoming the focus of many research. One intriguing example of these non-basic emotions is drug craving, a sophisticated concept which neuroscientists have studied for a long time. Nevertheless, it is not yet known whether craving is accompanied by a characteristic expressive behavior when it occurs, and only little work has been done on exploring the relationship between craving and facial expressions. In this thesis, we assume that drug-related stimuli can induce craving-related emotional states in drug …
Achieving Regulatory Compliance In Data Management, Sumeet Vijay Bajaj
Achieving Regulatory Compliance In Data Management, Sumeet Vijay Bajaj
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Regulations mandate consistent procedures for information access, processing, and storage. In the United States alone, over 10,000 data management regulations exist in the financial, life sciences, health care and government sectors. A recurrent theme in data management regulations is the need for regulatory compliant storage to ensure data confidentiality, data integrity, audit trails maintenance, data retention, and guaranteed deletion. This thesis describes the design and implementation of several regulatory compliant relational databases and file systems. The systems increase efficiency and lower costs of regulatory compliance through the use of novel cryptographic and system security constructs. The first system described in …
Greendm: A Versatile Tiering Hybrid Drive For The Trade-Off Evaluation Of Performance, Energy, And Endurance, Zhichao Li
Greendm: A Versatile Tiering Hybrid Drive For The Trade-Off Evaluation Of Performance, Energy, And Endurance, Zhichao Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There are trade-offs among performance, energy, and device endurance for storage systems. These trade-offs become more complex in storage system comprising different storage technologies. Designs optimized for one dimension or workload often suffer in another. Therefore, it is important to study the trade-offs so as to be able to adapt the system to workloads. As different types of drives have different traits, tiering hybrid drives are studied more closely. However, previous tiering hybrids are often designed for high throughput, efficient energy consumption, or improving endurance--leaving empirical study on the trade-offs being unexplored. Past endurance studies also lack a concrete model …

Re-Facing Societies Through Art Faith47: A Heroine For Hope, Stephen Louis Francis
Re-Facing Societies Through Art Faith47: A Heroine For Hope, Stephen Louis Francis
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Areas of the world that are facing hardships of all kinds bare the same signature that is visible to all: a dilapidated infrastructure. A first step in improving the areas that are struggling is to give the citizens something to be proud of when they look out of their windows. The work of South African street artist Faith47 is the kind of art that can provide such pride and also hope for a better future. Using Faith47's native country, I am proposing a socialist regime of art to both physically and emotionally improve the areas and citizens who suffer each …
The Effects Of Gender Mainstreaming On Maternal And Child Health: A Cross-National Analysis Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Pandolfelli
The Effects Of Gender Mainstreaming On Maternal And Child Health: A Cross-National Analysis Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Pandolfelli
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A substantive body of sociological literature has found that women's status is correlated with improved maternal and child health outcomes in developing countries, and accordingly, proposes policy recommendations for ending discrimination against women. Yet, the sociological literature has not engaged adequately with policy models for improving women's status. I address this gap in the literature by conducting the first cross-national quantitative analysis of gender mainstreaming -the global strategy adopted in 1995 by United Nations member countries for fostering gender equality. Specifically, the dissertation uses two-way fixed effects ordinary least squares regression to estimate the effects of gender-mainstreamed bilateral health aid, …

Collective Memory And Performative Reconquista: Action And Inaction In The Performance Art Of Regina Jose Galindo, Jasnira Lizbeth Zuniga
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Using Coco Fusco's notion of the Reconquista to read ¿Quién puede borrar las huellas? of 2003 and Reconocimiento de un cuerpo of 2008, this paper investigates performance artist Regina José Galindo's conceptual approaches of action and inaction. Grappling with very specific histories of violence and repression in attempts to deal with the unresolved, Regina José Galindo's performances here concern themselves with permanence and impermance, confronting and reactivating the bodies of her viewers by restaging collective memory and trauma. Focusing on pieces conceived and staged in the Latin American context, this paper contextualizes Galindo's performance in Guatemala and Argentina as attempts …

Ashura (also spelled Ashoura) takes place on the tenth day of Muharram when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that took place in 61 AH/ 680 AD. It is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines ritualistic and theatrical behavior. My objective is to shed light on the interaction between ritual and theatrical behavior and how these work together to form the overall event. The first section introduces the historical background of Ashura, the second section explores the ritualistic and theatrical characteristics of Ashura, and the last, concluding section talks about the relation between the two aspects and how they …
Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino
Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
What I will attempt in this essay is to bring the critique to Schoenberg's artistic legacy first on the grounds of the philosophical debate that was going on in those years in the German-speaking world, more specifically between Idealism and Materialism. The second step will be that of bringing the understanding of Schoenberg methods on a cognitive level; and in doing so, I will establish theoretical ties between those philosophical systems and cognitive systems; namely the Cognitivist and the Connectionist approaches. The third step will be that of mirroring the association between the philosophical plane and the cognitive one in …

An Examination Of Candida Albicans Mannosylation Mutants And Their Cw Structures, Frank August Mindlin
An Examination Of Candida Albicans Mannosylation Mutants And Their Cw Structures, Frank August Mindlin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Candida albicans is the most important human pathogenic fungus. Due to rising rates of infection and limited treatment options, it has become increasingly vital to identify the structures of the cell wall (CW) that can serve as ligands for anti-fungal drug recognition. Recently, a number of studies have focused their attention to the outer portion of the CW, which is comprised of glycoproteins modified with asparagine (N)-linked or serine or threonine (O)-linked mannan. Current models have shown N-linked mannan to be one of the key structures responsible for immune-cell recognition. Mutations in construction of the N-linked mannan outer chain, which …
Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti
Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Osteopenia is a comorbidity frequently observed in patients being treated for and recovering from cancer treatment, elevating their risk of fracture. These skeletal losses are compounded by chemotherapy and irradiation, damaging both bone and contents of the marrow, thereby undermining recovery efforts. Exercise is commonly prescribed as a non-pharmacological means of maintaining bone mass. However, in those with compromised bone strength, the loads imposed by rigorous exercises may facilitate a fracture it was intended to prevent. Low intensity vibrations (LIV), a mechanical signal demonstrated as anabolic to bone by biasing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) towards an osteogenic endpoint, may represent …
Synthesis Of Thermally-Responsive Amphiphilic Tri-Arm Star Copolymers, Menglan Jiang
Synthesis Of Thermally-Responsive Amphiphilic Tri-Arm Star Copolymers, Menglan Jiang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Amphiphilic block copolymers have attracted much research interest due to their potential applications in various areas, such as drug delivery and gene therapy and. Those polymers usually contain hydrophobic and hydrophilic blocks, which allow them to undergo self-assemby in aqueous solution. Thermally-responsive amphiphilic copolymers have been investigated by our group. Thermally-responsive blocks which have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) will become insoluble in aqueous solution upon heating and induce the morphological changes in copolymer assembly. In this project, amphiphilic tri-arm star copolymer which contains one hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) block, one hydrophobic polylactide (PLA) block and one thermally-responsive Poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) …

Validating The Use Of Fluorescent Proteins As Molecular Probes In Vivo And In Vitro, Laura Elizabeth Dougherty
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Fluorescent proteins are widely used in cell biology as molecular probes to observe a protein of interests location and movement and also to study protein-protein interactions. The study of protein-protein interactions is observed using a technique called fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET). FRET is used as a way to approximate distances between proteins in vivo and requires at least two fluorescent proteins in order to utilize the process. The most popular pairing is enhanced cyan and yellow fluorescent (eCFP/eYFP) proteins. To view protein localization, fluorescent proteins are attached to the protein of interest. PSD-95, a scaffolding protein in the post …
Ricci Flow And Its Applications, Min Zhang
Ricci Flow And Its Applications, Min Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis introduces the Ricci Flow and Its applications. Ricci flow has demonstrated its great potential by solving various problems in many fields, which can be hardly handled by alternative methods so far. General Ricci flow is defined on arbitrary dimensional Riemannian manifolds. Surface (2-manifold) Ricci flow has unique characteristics, which are crucial for developing discrete theories and designing computational algorithms. The unified theoretic framework for discrete Surface Ricci Flow is innovated, including all the common schemes: Tangential Circle Packing, Thurston's Circle Packing, Inversive Distance Circle Packing and Discrete Yamabe Flow. Furthermore, we also introduce novel schemes, Virtual Radius Circle …
Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Cardiac Excitation, Abhishek Murthy
Computational Modeling And Analysis Of Cardiac Excitation, Abhishek Murthy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Modeling, analysis, and control of cardiac excitation, the biological process cardiac cells undergo on a periodic basis, is indispensable for understanding and countering life-threatening electrical disturbances of the heart, such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation. Modeling involves the derivation of a mathematical/computational representation of the dynamics of cardiac cells and their diffusivity. The key to effective modeling lies in striking a balance between i) precision, the ability of the model to replicate the underlying biological phenomena, and ii) performance, in terms of amenability to automated analysis techniques, such as simulation and formal verification. The techniques of abstraction and compositionality have …
Dividend Taxes, Financial Frictions, And The U.S. Great Depression, Lunan Jiang
Dividend Taxes, Financial Frictions, And The U.S. Great Depression, Lunan Jiang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
As shown by McGrattan (2012), an anticipated increase in dividend taxes plays an important role in explaining the dramatic investment decline during the U.S. Great Depression. The first chapter of this dissertation attempts to test whether this conclusion is still robust when household heterogeneity and precautionary saving motives are taken into consideration. I build an Aiyagari model with dynamic firms, dividend taxes, and labor productivity shocks that accounts for the U.S. earnings and wealth inequality using 1930s data. The conclusion is that the impact of anticipated increases of dividend taxes on the investment is very sensitive to the presence of …
Parallel And Flexible Hardware Implementation Of Fletcher Checksum, Maria Isabel Mera Collantes
Parallel And Flexible Hardware Implementation Of Fletcher Checksum, Maria Isabel Mera Collantes
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Checksums are utilized in many contexts such as communications, storage and reliable processing. The balance between checksum strength, implementation cost and obtained throughput often pose a challenge for present day system designers. In this research we propose two new methods for implementing the Fletcher Checksum (FC) in a parallelized context. We determined an extended parallel definition from the original FC and applied it to two different hardware implementation approaches. We then created a generator that would automatically output parameterized designs. We controlled the input word length, number of parallel inputs and architecture of the designs, and we then synthesized these …
Evaluation Of Wrf Planetary Boundary Layer Schemes Over The Coastal Waters Of Southern New England, Matthew Joseph Sienkiewicz
Evaluation Of Wrf Planetary Boundary Layer Schemes Over The Coastal Waters Of Southern New England, Matthew Joseph Sienkiewicz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Winds, temperatures and moisture in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) are often difficult for operational models to predict given the relatively sparse observations and that most model PBL parameterizations were developed over inland locations. Coastal marine layer forecasts are important for the forecasting of severe storms and wind energy resources in the highly populated coastal marine environment of the Northeast U.S. (NEUS). Mesoscale models are known to have large biases in wind speeds and temperatures at these lower levels over coastal waters. The goal of this project is to evaluate the performance of six PBL schemes in the Weather Research …

Deformation Behavior Of Honeycomb Foams In Compression, Doo Hee Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the present work, poly lactic acid (PLA) is used as a model system to investigate the deformation behavior of honeycomb foams under compression loads. Solid PLA tension specimens and foams made of PLA were fabricated using fused deposition 3-D printing technique. The solid PLA tension specimens were characterized for their densities and found to be about 10% lower in density as compared to their bulk counter parts. The honeycomb foams had a relative density of about 47%. The deformation mechanisms leading to the crushing of the honeycomb foams under compression were characterized. Furthermore, simple finite element models were developed …
