Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores a series of transformations in the articulations between politics and cultural production in Spain between 2000 and 2011. The four chapters seek to document and theorize the nature and effects of these changes across three primary spheres of action. Thus the first chapter analyzes State policies and institutional arrangements in relation to cultural production during the last decades of the Spanish democratic regime. Chapters Two and Three consist of close readings of two relevant texts from recent Spanish literary production that offer divergent literary representations of the political. The analysis of Javier Cercas' Anatomia de un instante …

The Blues Continuum: New York Calls - Naples Responds, Alessandro Buffa Dec 2014

The Blues Continuum: New York Calls - Naples Responds, Alessandro Buffa

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation traces a form of call and response between New York City and Naples in the 1970s and 1980s. It foregrounds the importance of the `blues' in the traffic of sound, images and oppositional ideas between these two cities located on the same geographical parallel. The blues here is understood as a musical style and feeling, as well as an affect of trauma, loss, memory and an intimate relationship that artists and activists established with their city spaces in the age of the so called " urban crisis." It proposes a " blutopia," based on utopian/dystopian tensions that promote …

Effects Of Ocean Acidification Combined With Hypoxia, Elevated Temperature, Or Restricted Food Supply On Early Life Stages Of The Forage Fish Menidia Beryllina, Menidia Menidia, And Cyprinodon Variegatus, Elizabeth Depasquale Dec 2014

Effects Of Ocean Acidification Combined With Hypoxia, Elevated Temperature, Or Restricted Food Supply On Early Life Stages Of The Forage Fish Menidia Beryllina, Menidia Menidia, And Cyprinodon Variegatus, Elizabeth Depasquale

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Estuarine organisms are experiencing many stressors related to climate change at an accelerated pace when compared to the open ocean. The co-occurrence of acidification and hypoxia has been observed during warmer months when many fish species spawn in temperate estuaries. Concurrently, estuarine systems can experience extreme temperatures during summer and dynamic levels of plankton. This study assessed the tolerance of early life stage estuarine fish to the co-occurrence of acidification with hypoxia, elevated temperatures, and varying levels of planktonic prey. Time to hatch, hatching rates, survival, and growth were quantified for larval Menidia beryllina, Menidia menidia, and Cyprinodon variegatus exposed …

High-Throughput Single-Cell Copy Number Profiling For Cancer Heterogeneity Analysis, Taimour Baslan Dec 2014

High-Throughput Single-Cell Copy Number Profiling For Cancer Heterogeneity Analysis, Taimour Baslan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Intra-tumoral genetic heterogeneity has long been recognized, yet remains poorly understood. This has primarily been due to the lack of sensitive technologies to measure it. Genome wide analysis at the level of single cells has recently emerged as a powerful tool to dissect cancer genome heterogeneity. However, to be truly transformative, single cell approaches must accommodate the analysis of large numbers of single cells. Here, using integrative informatics and molecular biology approaches this study presents a robust, low-cost, and high-throughput method to retrieve the genome-wide copy number landscape of hundreds of single cancer cells. Application of the method to human …

Missing-In-Metastasis Regulates Cell Motility And Invasion Via Ptpδ Mediated Changes In Src Activity, Fauzia Chaudhary Dec 2014

Missing-In-Metastasis Regulates Cell Motility And Invasion Via Ptpδ Mediated Changes In Src Activity, Fauzia Chaudhary

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Missing in Metastasis (MIM), also known as MTSS1, is a scaffold protein that is down-regulated in multiple metastatic cancer cell lines compared to non-metastatic counterparts. MIM regulates cytoskeletal dynamics and actin polymerization, and has been implicated in the control of cell motility and invasion. MIM has also been shown to bind to a receptor PTP, PTP-delta, an interaction that may provide a link between tyrosine phosphorylation-dependent signaling and metastasis. We used shRNA-mediated gene silencing to investigate the consequences of loss of MIM on the migration and invasion of the MCF10A mammary epithelial cell model of breast cancer. We observed that …

Studies Of Hydrodynamic Processes In Alternative Magneto-Inertial Fusion Devices, Lina Zhang Dec 2014

Studies Of Hydrodynamic Processes In Alternative Magneto-Inertial Fusion Devices, Lina Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The main goal of the research is evaluation of the plasma jet driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF) concept via simulations. To achieve this goal, the development of mathematical models and numerical algorithms for PJMIF has been performed, and large-scale simulation studies have been conducted. In the PJMIF concept, a plasma liner, formed by the merger of a large number of radial, highly supersonic plasma jets, implodes on a magnetized plasma target and compresses it to conditions of the fusion ignition. 1- (spherically symmetric), 2- and 3-dimensional simulations of the implosion of plasma liners and compression of plasma targets have been performed …

Three Novel Rrna Methyltransferases In Mammalian Mitochondria, Ken Lee Dec 2014

Three Novel Rrna Methyltransferases In Mammalian Mitochondria, Ken Lee

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Mammalian mitochondria maintain their double-stranded circular genome in DNA-protein complexes known as nucleoids, similar to bacteria. While bacterial and yeast mitochondrial nucleoids have been studied more extensively, much is unknown about the protein composition and events that occur at mammalian mitochondrial nucleoids. Recent work has identified many novel mitochondrial nucleoid proteins by mass spectrometry, however the functions of many of these proteins are not well understood. One of the interesting proteins identified by mass spectrometry is RNMTL1, a putative RNA methyltransferase. A search for related mitochondrial proteins in proteomic databases revealed MRM1 and MRM2 as potential RNA methyltransferases as well. …

Molecular Mechanisms For Specific Kinase Inhibitors And Kinase Promiscuity Towards Inhibitors, George Georghiou Dec 2014

Molecular Mechanisms For Specific Kinase Inhibitors And Kinase Promiscuity Towards Inhibitors, George Georghiou

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Dysregulated kinase activity is implicated in a wide variety of diseases because of the central role of kinases in many cell signaling pathways. Currently all small molecule kinase inhibitors used clinically target the ATP-binding pocket, which is highly conserved among all kinases due to their common use of ATP. This high degree of conservation makes the pharmacological targeting of individual kinases difficult. However, it has been achieved with several drugs, the most famous of these being the Abl kinase inhibitor imatinib (Gleevec, Novartis). While a number of broad-spectrum kinase inhibitors are in clinical use, specific kinase inhibition is favorable to …

The Role Of Tolc In Francisella Tularensis Virulence, Christopher Richard Doyle Dec 2014

The Role Of Tolc In Francisella Tularensis Virulence, Christopher Richard Doyle

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative, facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of tularemia. F. tularensis is a Tier 1 agent of bioterrorism that is highly lethal via the pulmonary route of infection. F. tularensis invades host cells, escapes the phagosome, and replicates in the cytosol prior to being released upon host cell death. The molecular mechanisms behind the virulence of F. tularensis are largely unknown. Among the described virulence factors of F. tularensis is a functional type I secretion system (T1SS). The T1SS is important for the secretion of virulence factors from the bacterial cytoplasm to the extracellular environment. …

Identification Of Sporulation-Defective Genes And A Rab-Cascade Model For The Formation Of The Forespore Membrane In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Esma Ucisik-Akkaya Dec 2014

Identification Of Sporulation-Defective Genes And A Rab-Cascade Model For The Formation Of The Forespore Membrane In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Esma Ucisik-Akkaya

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In the fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, environmental stress conditions such as nitrogen starvation induce mating of two haploid cells. The newly formed diploid cells immediately undergo meiosis and form spores, which are equivalent to gametes in higher organisms. The packaging of the haploid nuclei, which are formed after two rounds of meiosis, is achieved by the de novo formation of double membranes called forespore membranes, which form adjacent to the meiotic spindle pole bodies (SPBs). This work focuses on the initiation of the forespore membrane at the SPB and the genes that are required for the proper formation of the …

Hollow Night, Jason Gerraughty Dec 2014

Hollow Night, Jason Gerraughty

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Hollow Night is a piece for orchestra, whose music evokes the composer's bouts with insomnia and anxiety attacks. The piece heavily borrows from traditions of blues music, and is heavily influenced by the musical memories of the composer's youth, performing in local town bands. Hollow Night begins with faint whispers emerging from stillness, and slowly builds its way into a sustained frenzy, full of abrupt changes and propelled forward by relentless rhythmic motion. The harmonic construction of Hollow Night involves the combining of multiple instances of a four-pitch set, recognizable as the first four pitches of a blues scale. These …

Thalamocortical Input To The Primary Visual Cortex, Michelle Kloc Dec 2014

Thalamocortical Input To The Primary Visual Cortex, Michelle Kloc

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) is the region of the thalamus that innervates and relays sensory information to the primary visual cortex (V1). Thalamocortical (TC) input from the LGN drives the activity of V1, and underlies the health and function of the visual system. However, little is known about the synaptic properties of this input. LGN inputs innervate two layers, layer 4 (L4) and layer 6 (L6). This input has been examined functionally and anatomically, but the synaptic mechanisms of this input are poorly understood. The anatomy of the projection from the LGN to V1 encumbers the preparation of an …

Cholinergic Modulation And Integration Of Excitatory Inputs To Basolateral Amygdala, James David Lederman Dec 2014

Cholinergic Modulation And Integration Of Excitatory Inputs To Basolateral Amygdala, James David Lederman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The amygdala, a subcortical structure in the anterior temporal lobe, plays important roles in integrating sensory information from different brain areas, assigning emotional valence and effecting adaptive behavioral, physiological, and cognitive responses. Sensory inputs from cortical and thalamic sources, carrying highly processed sensory information and low level, more direct sensory information, respectively, converge in the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA). Here, neuromodulation by acetylcholine (ACh), released from inputs arising from the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) in the basal forebrain, plays a major role in synaptic integration during different emotional arousal states. Using patch-clamp electrophysiology in acute brain slices …

Democracy And Its Others, Jeffrey Harry Epstein Dec 2014

Democracy And Its Others, Jeffrey Harry Epstein

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Today's unprecedented levels of human migration present urgent challenges to traditional conceptualizations of national identity, nation-state sovereignty, and democratic citizenship. The instrumental valorization or vilification of foreignness for nationalistic ends has long-determined who is to be included within or excluded from " the people" of the democratic state. Against this instrumentalization, I argue that foreignness is an originary and constitutive element of democratic political identity which severs the links among nationality, citizenship, and democratic rights. Accordingly, a re-conceptualization of democratic rights is required that reflects the structural necessity of foreignness to democratic political identity. | 225 pages

Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse Dec 2014

Propaedeutic To Philosophy: Dialogue And Truth In Philosophical Practice, Lauren Nelson Hesse

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation advocates a model of dialogue as an approach to education and to philosophical discourse itself that is capable of acknowledging and accommodating the manifold possibilities for human thought. Contemporary philosophy is permeated by a loss of certainty and the increasingly problematic nature of the concept of truth, and the complication of these concepts exposes significant limitations in the ways we conceptualize thought itself. Working in this vein, Gilles Deleuze identifies what he calls an " image of thought," which characterizes the forms we have traditionally allowed thinking to take. His critique of this image, along with its subsequent …

Questionable Form: An Inquiry Into The Relationship Between Philosophy And Literature, Amir Rauf Alduha Jaima Dec 2014

Questionable Form: An Inquiry Into The Relationship Between Philosophy And Literature, Amir Rauf Alduha Jaima

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Through a comparative reading of philosophical and literary texts, I examine the distinction between the projects and practices of philosophy and literature. I argue that, like philosophy, novels make arguments and explicitly engage the range of philosophical questions; and like literature, essential elements of philosophy include aesthetic considerations. Moreover, the presumed distinction between philosophy and literature does a disservice to both. If we overlook the literary qualities of philosophy, we risk relegating to the margins important contributions to traditional philosophical problems; and if we overlook the philosophical qualities of literature, we risk passing over some of the most profound elements …

The Placiality Of Thought, Brian A. Irwin Dec 2014

The Placiality Of Thought, Brian A. Irwin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

All experience is embodied and, concomitantly, all experience is emplaced. It follows that abstract thought, as a mode of experience, is always emplaced. In what sense is this the case? Following the insights of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, this dissertation seeks to answer this question. A first key insight comes from Phenomenology of Perception: namely, the suggestion that every thought is a bodily experience, and that abstract thought expresses bodily capacities that, through imagination, enter into realms of the virtual. A second key insight comes from Merleau-Ponty's later philosophy, especially The Visible and the Invisible: this is his account of language as …

A Comprehensive Investigation And Coupler Design For Higher-Order Modes In The Bnl Energy Recovery Linear Accelerator, Carlos Marques Dec 2014

A Comprehensive Investigation And Coupler Design For Higher-Order Modes In The Bnl Energy Recovery Linear Accelerator, Carlos Marques

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A next generation Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) is under development in the Collider-Accelerator Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This ERL uses a superconducting radio frequency (SFR) cavity to produce an electric field gradient ideal to accelerate charged particles. As with many accelerators, higher-order modes (HOMs) can be induced by a beam of charged particles traversing the linear accelerator cavity. The excitation of these modes can result in problematic single and multi-bunch effects and also produce undesirable heat loads to the cryogenic system. Understanding HOM prevalence and structure inside the accelerator cavity is crucial for devising a procedure for extracting …

Towards Single Photon Nonlinearities Using Cavity Eit, Zakary Burkley Dec 2014

Towards Single Photon Nonlinearities Using Cavity Eit, Zakary Burkley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In third order nonlinear mediums, the intensity of one optical field can modify the phase of another optical field. This is known as cross-phase modulation (XPM) and is important for Quantum Information Processing (QIP) as phase shifts of single-photons that exceed π rad can be used to implement two-qubit quantum logic gates. For a conventional XPM scheme, the Kerr nonlinearity responsible for XPM is too small for appreciable phase shifts to be achieved with low intensity optical fields. However, Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) can increase this nonlinearity by several orders of magnitude. This thesis discusses the experimental construction of a …

Optical Forces On Metastable Helium, Christopher Scott Corder Dec 2014

Optical Forces On Metastable Helium, Christopher Scott Corder

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Optical forces using lasers allow precise control over the motion of atoms. The bichromatic optical force (BF) is unique in its large magnitude and velocity range, arising from the absorption and stimulated emission processes. These properties were used to transversely collimate a beam of metastable helium (He∗ ) using the 2^{3}S − 2^{3}P transition. The collimation created a very bright beam of He∗ , allowing experiments of neutral atom lithography. The He∗ beam was used to pattern material surfaces using a resist-based lithography technique, where the pattern was determined by either mechanical or optical masks. The optical masks produced features …

Analysis Of Short Range Entangled Topological Phases Protected By Time-Reversal Symmetry, Sebastian Moritz Dick Dec 2014

Analysis Of Short Range Entangled Topological Phases Protected By Time-Reversal Symmetry, Sebastian Moritz Dick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

We discuss a short-range entangled topological phase in 3+1 dimensions that is pro- tected by time-reversal symmetry. Two models are compared that realize this phase: The first is a construction developed by Chen, Gu, Liu and Wen, which encodes the system’s topological properties in the representation of the symmetry group. The sec- ond theory uses a non-linear sigma model in which the distinct topological phases differ by the way the symmetry acts on the order parameter. Both theories have in common that the modeled phases are in one to one correspondence with the elements of the co- homology group H …

Exploring Warped Compactifications Of Extra Dimensions, Sujan P. Dabholkar Dec 2014

Exploring Warped Compactifications Of Extra Dimensions, Sujan P. Dabholkar

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In 1920s, the concept of extra dimensions was considered for the first time to unify gravity and electromagnetism. Since then there have been many developments to understand the unification of fundamental forces using extra dimensions. In this thesis, we study this idea of extra dimensions in higher dimensional gravity theories such as String Theory or Supergravity to make connections with cosmology. We construct a family of non-singular time-dependent solutions of a six-dimensional gravity with a warped geometry. The warp factor is time-dependent and breaks the translation invariance along one of the extra directions. Our solutions have the desired property of …

Measurement Of Direct Photons In Ultra-Relativistic Au+Au Collisions, Haijiang Gong Dec 2014

Measurement Of Direct Photons In Ultra-Relativistic Au+Au Collisions, Haijiang Gong

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Direct photons provide a tool to study the different stages of a heavy ion collision, especially the formation of the quark-gluon-plasma (QGP), without being influenced by the strong reaction and hadronization processes. The yield of direct photons can be determined from the inclusive photon yield and the photon yield from hadronic decays. At low pT, where a significant fraction of direct photon is expected to come from the thermalized medium of deconfined quarks and gluons and interacting hadrons, the measurement is very challenging. These so-called thermal photons carry information about the initial temperature of the medium. We present …

Observation Of $\Nu_E$ Appearance From An Off-Axis $\Nu_{\Mu}$ Beam Utilizing The Neutrino Energy Spectrum, Joshua Michael Hignight Dec 2014

Observation Of $\Nu_E$ Appearance From An Off-Axis $\Nu_{\Mu}$ Beam Utilizing The Neutrino Energy Spectrum, Joshua Michael Hignight

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

T2K (Tokai to Kamiokande) is a long baseline neutrino experiment located in Japan. It uses a 30 GeV proton beam at the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai to produce an intense off-axis muon neutrino beam that travels 295 km through the Earth to Super-Kamiokande. One of its primary goals is to measure neutrino oscillation parameters by directly detecting $\nu_e$ at Super-Kamiokande that have oscillated from the $\nu_{\mu}$ beam. The measurement of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{e}$ oscillations are of a particular interest because this mode is sensitive to both mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ and CP phase $\delta_{CP}$ of the PMNS matrix. Precise measurement of …

The Case Of Extended Supersymmetry And A Study In Superspace, Dharmesh Jain Dec 2014

The Case Of Extended Supersymmetry And A Study In Superspace, Dharmesh Jain

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation we study quantum field theories with extended supersymmetry in four and three dimensions. In d=4 we study N=2 supersymmetric theories using projective superspace formalism extensively. We discover the full non-Abelian action for super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in projective superspace by studying its relation to harmonic superspace under a suitable Wick rotation of the latter's internal two-dimensional sphere. We also show that a Chern-Simons action for SYM in ‘ full‘ N=2 superspace can be written down that reproduces both the harmonic and projective SYM actions. The projective formalism allows simplifications in computing Feynman supergraphs because the N=2 rules …

Phase Separation And Neighboring Ground States Of Superconductivity In Kxfe2− Yse2, Hyejin Ryu Dec 2014

Phase Separation And Neighboring Ground States Of Superconductivity In Kxfe2− Yse2, Hyejin Ryu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Iron-based superconductor KxFe2-ySe2 has generated considerable attention having higher critical temperature (~31 K)* than previously reported FeSe series (~8 K) and showing a unique phase separation with Fe vacancy order. We investigate the effect of the chemical substitution to the ground state and report various ground states such as spin glass phase and superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) under high-magnetic field by substitution of Na, Te, and Ni on KxFe2-ySe2 single crystal. The normal-state in-plane resistivity below Tc and the upper critical field for KxFe2-ySe1.85Te0.15 and K0.50Na0.24Fe2-ySe2 are measured by suppressing superconductivity in pulsed magnetic fields. The normal-state resistivity is found to …

Measurement Of The Ww And Wz Production Cross Section In The Semi-Leptonic Final State Using Sqrt(S)=7 Tev Pp Collisions With The Atlas Detector, David Puldon Dec 2014

Measurement Of The Ww And Wz Production Cross Section In The Semi-Leptonic Final State Using Sqrt(S)=7 Tev Pp Collisions With The Atlas Detector, David Puldon

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Presented is a measurement of the WW+WZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV using data produced by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector in 2011. The measurement tests understanding of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model at high energies and is potentially sensitive to new physics models that go beyond the Standard Model. The production cross section is measured in the WW/WZ semi-leptonic decay channel where one W boson decays into a lepton (either an electron or muon) and a neutrino, and the other W or Z boson decays hadronically …

Aspects Of Perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Stanislav Srednyak Dec 2014

Aspects Of Perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Stanislav Srednyak

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the calculation of multiplicity of two-gluon production in heavy ion collisions in the framework of Colour Glass Condensate. The second exhibits a finite basis for the perturbative correlation functions at a given loop order. The third demonstrates that the number of integrations in a perturbative amplitude can be reduced in half in even dimensions, and provides explicit formula for such a reduction in the (2,2) signature. | 79 pages

Nuclear Quantum Effects In Ice Phases And Water From First Principles Calculations, Betul Pamuk Dec 2014

Nuclear Quantum Effects In Ice Phases And Water From First Principles Calculations, Betul Pamuk

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Despite the simplicity of the molecule, condensed phases of water show many physical anomalies, some of which are still unexplained to date. This thesis focuses on one striking anomaly that has been largely neglected and never explained. When hydrogen (1H) is replaced by deuterium (2 D), zero point fluctuations of the heavy isotope causes ice to expand, whereas in normal isotope effect, heavy isotope causes volume contraction. Furthermore, in a normal isotope effect, the shift in volume should decrease with increasing temperature, while, in ice, the volume shift increases with increasing temperature and persists up to the melting temperature and …

Contextual Influences On Political Cognition, April Johnson Dec 2014

Contextual Influences On Political Cognition, April Johnson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation argues that electoral supply, as measured by the effective number of parties across U.S. Congressional districts, shapes the way in which individuals conceptualize and think about politics at a fundamental, cognitive level. Via socialization processes and repeated exposure over time, individuals nested within dissimilar supply environments learn to interact with political stimuli in ways which systematically differ. In contexts with traditionally less electoral supply, or a fewer number of viable parties, individuals become accustom to characterizing partisan dynamics in dichotomous, black and white terms. Alternatively, in contexts with more electoral supply individuals learn to view partisan dynamics as …
