Synthesis And Characterization Studies Of Li-Fe-In-(Po4) Phases: Chemical Relatives Of Battery Cathode Material Lithium Iron Phosphate, Michael Richard Saccomanno
Synthesis And Characterization Studies Of Li-Fe-In-(Po4) Phases: Chemical Relatives Of Battery Cathode Material Lithium Iron Phosphate, Michael Richard Saccomanno
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Lithium iron(II) phosphate, also known as lithium ferrophosphate (LiFePO4, LFP), has been the subject of many recent energy storage studies. As a battery cathode material, LFP has many advantages for commercial applications. Compared to its competitors like LiMn2O4 and the ubiquitous but carcinogenic LiCoO2, LFP (specific energy = 600 Wh/kg) exhibits low toxicity, low cost, good thermal stability, and excellent electrochemical performance at high charge/discharge rates. As part of the efforts to understand and improve LFP, a great amount of research has been committed towards developing, characterizing, and electrochemically testing chemical relatives of …
Biophysical Insights Into The Initiation And Inhibition Of Amyloid Formation By Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, Hui Wang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Amyloid formation, the aggregation of normally soluble proteins or polypeptides into highly ordered beta-sheet structures, is a characteristic feature of many human diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and type 2 diabetes. I centered my research on islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), a neuroendocrine hormone that forms fibrillar amyloid deposits in the extracellular space of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans in type 2 diabetes. Although whether IAPP amyloid formation is a cause or consequence of the disease is controversial, the aggregation process has been shown to induce beta-cell apoptosis and reduce beta-cell mass, which is a hallmark feature of type 2 …
Development And Application Of Chiral Biphenol-Based Diphosphinite Ligands To Pd-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Substitution Reactions, Yang Zang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the past decade, libraries of chiral biphenol-based phosphite, phosphoramidite, and diphosphinite ligands have been designed and developed in our laboratory. These ligands are easy to prepare and fine-tunable through modification of the groups at the 3,3'-positions and the substituents attached to the phosphorous atoms. Therefore, our chiral ligand system is suitable for new and specific asymmetric reactions to follow the rapid progress in modern synthetic organic chemistry, e.g. | the asymmetric allylic substitution reactions. As an exploration of the scope of the applications of our chiral ligands, we studied the Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic etherification in the most critical step …
Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Taxoid-Based Drug Conjugates And Theranostic Imaging Agents Towards Tumor-Targeted Chemotherapy, Jacob G. Vineberg
Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Taxoid-Based Drug Conjugates And Theranostic Imaging Agents Towards Tumor-Targeted Chemotherapy, Jacob G. Vineberg
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths, and is exceeded only by heart disease. Traditional chemotherapy uses highly potent cytotoxic agents to kill rapidly dividing cancer cells, relying on the premise that these fast-growing cancer cells are more likely to be killed by these drugs. Despite the profound impact of traditional chemotherapy, lack of tumor-specificity continues to be a serious issue for cancer treatment. Paclitaxel and docetaxel are among the most widely used chemotherapeutic agents, in particular against cancers such as ovarian, breast, lung, and Kaposi's sarcoma; …
The Impact Of Children With And Without Developmental Disabilities On Relationship Satisfaction And The Parenting Alliance, Caitlin E. Walsh
The Impact Of Children With And Without Developmental Disabilities On Relationship Satisfaction And The Parenting Alliance, Caitlin E. Walsh
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Studies have shown that parents of children with ASD report greater negative impact of the child on family adaptation including financial stability, sibling relationships, and parents' social lives than parents of children with other chronic problems (e.g. | Down syndrome, ADHD, ODD). Parents of children with ASD also report increased marital discord and parent stress. Currently there are no studies examining differences in parent perceptions of child impact and how this factor may influence parental relationships, particularly parents' spousal relationships and agreement on co-parenting. In this study, 157 mothers of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down syndrome (DS), …
Evidence For Genetic Contributions To Neurobehavioral Traits: Trait Fear/Fearlessness, Behavioral Inhibition, And The Late Positive Potential, Anna Ef Weinberg
Evidence For Genetic Contributions To Neurobehavioral Traits: Trait Fear/Fearlessness, Behavioral Inhibition, And The Late Positive Potential, Anna Ef Weinberg
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Psychiatric disorders are the most common and costly forms of disease and injury worldwide. Despite this, our ability to accurately identify and treat these disorders is limited, due in part to deficient understanding of the underlying mechanisms of dysfunction. The current study aimed to identify genetically-influenced neurobehavioral traits--individual differences evident in both self-report and neural response--that might help improve classification and treatment of mental disorders. Results from event-related potential (ERP) components sensitive to emotional content demonstrated that a) neural processing of emotional content is heritable, b) the heritable traits of heightened trait fear and behavioral disinhibition are associated with unique …
Sierra On-Line And The Archaeology Of Video Game History, Erica Alaine Nooney
Sierra On-Line And The Archaeology Of Video Game History, Erica Alaine Nooney
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation is a critique of contemporary video game historiography, executed through a cultural history of the home entertainment microcomputer software company Sierra On-Line (1980-1998) and its husband-and-wife co-founders, Ken and Roberta Williams. Sierra On-Line developed from a cottage industry business managed from the Williams' kitchen table to an international top-five entertainment software publisher, yet the past fifteen years of historical writing on video games have left the company in relative obscurity. This project advances theoretical methods from media archaeology and critical materialism to construct a history of Sierra On-Line that runs against the grain of broader narratives in video …
Violence Against Chicanas From 1950 To 2000, Tzu-Ling Yen
Violence Against Chicanas From 1950 To 2000, Tzu-Ling Yen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the mid-twentieth to late-twentieth century, a number of Mexican laborers came to the United States to search for more working opportunities. After settling in the U.S. | they had to adjust to the harsh environment, poor working conditions, and multiple discrimination in Anglo-American society. Also, many Chicanas suffered from religious and patriarchal violence inside their community. This thesis examines different types of violence against Chicana/o migrants in the U.S. from 1950 to 2000, including economic violence, religious violence, racial discrimination, and sexual violence. In both Chicana/o community and white society, Chicanas/os have to deal with different kinds of violence …
The Influence Of Drought On The Ecological And Evolutionary Genomics Of Fungal Pathogenesis In An Annual Plant, Brassica Rapa, Niamh Breda O'Hara
The Influence Of Drought On The Ecological And Evolutionary Genomics Of Fungal Pathogenesis In An Annual Plant, Brassica Rapa, Niamh Breda O'Hara
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There is growing evidence that populations are evolving rapidly in response to climate change. However, the potential cost associated with adapting, and the genetic basis of both rapid evolution and costs of adaptation remain largely unexplored. With climate change, drought is increasing in frequency and severity, widely affecting plant yield and fitness in agricultural and natural populations. For my dissertation, I integrated multiple approaches (field, greenhouse, lab and bioinformatic) to explore the ecological and evolutionary effects of drought on an agriculturally important plant-pathogen system: the annual herbaceous plant Brassica rapa (field mustard), and its fungal pathogen Alternaria brassicae. In a …
Job Displacement, Retirement And The Roles Of Government Programs Among Older American Workers, Jieruo Liu
Job Displacement, Retirement And The Roles Of Government Programs Among Older American Workers, Jieruo Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The world has been going through one of worst economic recessions in history with severe job market downturns. In October 2009, the U.S. civilian unemployment rate reached a historical 10% and nearly 50% of the unemployed exhausted their 26-week regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits and consequently, UI has been extended to 99 weeks. This dissertation examines the empirical facts of job displacement among the older American workers during the recent economic crisis, and studies their subsequent labor market and retirement decisions, with focus on the roles of government programs including UI and Social Security Old-Age Benefits (OA). Job displacement is …
The Macroeconomics Of Bank Competition Over The Business Cycle, Yan Liu
The Macroeconomics Of Bank Competition Over The Business Cycle, Yan Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Two empirical regularities of bank lending practices stand out: interest rate spreads on loans and lending standards both are lower during booms than in recessions. I provide a unified explanation of these two facts, stressing procyclical competition of the banking sector as the driving force. I first develop a game of bank lending with screening. Borrowers have private information about the creditworthiness of their projects. Banks rely on a screening technology to distinguish good projects from bad ones by choosing the screening intensity, which I identify with the lending standards. Because screening is costly, in the optimum the screening intensities …
A Reconsideration Of Labor Supply Of Immigrants And Social Welfare Programs, Yi Zhang
A Reconsideration Of Labor Supply Of Immigrants And Social Welfare Programs, Yi Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation contributes to the discussion of the labor market performance of immigrants and their economic assimilation in terms of welfare program participation. The composition of immigrant labor force in U.S. has been fluctuating dramatically. In 1980, for example, the immigrant share of persons aged 50--74 was 8.9% but in 2000, more than 14.5% of this older population group were from foreign countries. Then in 2010, this proportion dropped to around 13.2%. Part of this variation is due to the aging of previous immigrants residing in U.S. but many recent inflows also include a surprisingly high proportion of people in …
Design Of Low-Power, Low-Noise Readout Circuits For Sensory Microsystems, Yingkan Lin
Design Of Low-Power, Low-Noise Readout Circuits For Sensory Microsystems, Yingkan Lin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A wide range of new applications, especially in the areas of health and environmental monitoring, have become possible due to advances in the sensor technologies over the last decade. To translate those advances in the sensor technologies into sensory microsystems amenable to these applications, novel techniques and design methodologies have to be developed at the sensory interface to address more stringent system constraints and the imperfections in these sensor technologies. We propose and demonstrate the design methodologies and implementations of the sensory microsystems for two novel sensor technologies, selective metaloxide gas sensor and semiconductor scintillator. The gas sensing system with …
Image Reconstruction Theory And Implementation For Low-Dose X-Ray Computed Tomography, Yan Liu
Image Reconstruction Theory And Implementation For Low-Dose X-Ray Computed Tomography, Yan Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The excessive X-ray radiation exposure during clinical examinations has been reported to be linked to increase lifetime risk of cancers in patients. Directly lower computed tomography (CT) dose without improving reconstruction technique will degrade the image quality and is not acceptable. The objective of this dissertation is investigating novel reconstruction methods to improve image quality in low-dose cases. In practice, it is usually more convenient to improve the conventional analytical methods by refining projection model and designing new filters due to the fast computing time and low computational complexity. However, the reconstructions from analytical methods are still sensitive to artifacts …
Distributed Estimation In The Presence Of Correlation, Zhiyuan Weng
Distributed Estimation In The Presence Of Correlation, Zhiyuan Weng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We study the problem of distributed estimation, where a group of nodes are required to cooperate with each other to estimate some parameter of interest from noisy measurements without a fusion center. Distributed estimation algorithms are useful in several areas, including wireless sensor networks, where robustness, scalability, flexibility, and low power consumption are desirable. In this dissertation, we mainly focus on the cases where the node measurements are correlated. First, we consider the problem of fusing multiple estimates from different nodes. Cases of both known and unknown correlation are investigated. A Bayesian approach and a convex optimization approach are proposed. …
Alcohol, Public Perception, And Narrative Design In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Kristin Boluch
Alcohol, Public Perception, And Narrative Design In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Kristin Boluch
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Scholarship concerning alcohol representations in nineteenth-century American literature and culture has predominately focused on " temperance discourse" (meaning temperance ideology, an anti-alcohol moral culture, prohibitory laws and regulations, etc.). Generally, narratives understood to represent this discourse assume that the depicted consumers and producers of alcohol are excluded from the ideally imagined community. In Modern literature, by contrast, alcohol use is understood to represent cultural rebellion by individual characters (as seen in Hemingway's community of ex-patriots, or Fitzgerald's Jazz Age lost generation). The dissertation challenges assumptions of this chronological progression which begins in representations of alcohol's social banishment. Though nineteenth-century American …
Disability And The Young Adult Reader: How Has The Portrayal Of Disability Changed In The Last Fifty Years?, Sharon Munroe Hinkson
Disability And The Young Adult Reader: How Has The Portrayal Of Disability Changed In The Last Fifty Years?, Sharon Munroe Hinkson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Literature offers an opportunity to share in the lived experiences of others, experiences that as readers we may otherwise never personally encounter. Disability in our society is a reality, yet one that has not been fully embraced--not unlike issues with race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Individuals begin to encounter many of these matters early in life, but as impressionable adolescents, a time when they begin to understand and navigate the world, often times they meet these experiences in books. Since books are an especially important part of how thoughts and attitudes are shaped, this paper seeks to analyze a …
Representations Of Disability In Of Mice And Men And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: Avoiding Handicapism In The Classroom, Lyndsay L. Mccabe
Representations Of Disability In Of Mice And Men And One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: Avoiding Handicapism In The Classroom, Lyndsay L. Mccabe
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this thesis, I examine two novels that feature characters with disabilities and that are often taught in secondary English classes. These texts will be analyzed through a disability studies perspective - a form of analysis that is not often taught in schools. The disability studies perspective involves looking at disability in a critical light and examining the social, cultural, and political ramifications of assumptions that are made about those considered to be " disabled" by the able-bodied majority. Using this lens, I will explore the assumptions about disability that seem to be represented in these works through their use …
American Masculinity And Home In Antebellum Literature, Derek Scott Mcgrath
American Masculinity And Home In Antebellum Literature, Derek Scott Mcgrath
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The conventional argument in literary and gender studies of nineteenth-century United States culture has been that the home was women's claimed sphere of influence, whereas men were excluded from the home because of their economic, cultural, and societal commitments to the public sphere. Even as Catharine Beecher, Lydia Maria Child, Sarah Josepha Hale, and other adherents to a conservative domestic ideology closely associated the private sphere with women, these same writers identified specific roles and spaces that they expected men to occupy in the home. Hardly only a woman's domain, the home was a powerful force in motivating constructions of …
Is There Room For The Modern Narrator? A Study Of Narrative Intrusion In Henry James' The Golden Bowl, Rachael Pompeii
Is There Room For The Modern Narrator? A Study Of Narrative Intrusion In Henry James' The Golden Bowl, Rachael Pompeii
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
At the turn of the twentieth century, narrative presentation saw one of the most intense transitionary movements in literary history. The instructive, omniscient authorial narrator of Victorian literature slowly faced demise as an increasing turn towards subjective, stream-of-consciousness narration dominated the literary age of twentieth century modern realism. The critical and fictional work of Henry James, literary genius who wrote across the century line, persists in the presentation of a distinctive narrating body at the same time that it encourages and anticipates the incipient effacement of such a figure. In his final completed novel, The Golden Bowl, James' narrative choices …
God's Involvement In American Politics (A Brief History And Present), Michael Reich
God's Involvement In American Politics (A Brief History And Present), Michael Reich
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
There are myriad ways God has been included in modern American politics, but where does that inclusion stem from? The parallels between the Bible, American history, and modern day American politics are numerous. Once it can be seen that God has always been essential to America, and God has always been necessary to most Americans, we can find more avenues to identify God's roots in American political discourse and political activism, and legal literature. God is foremost necessary in the Bible and that idea was brought forth into the realm of American politics. He means everything and is everything to …
Shakespeare's Evil: From Vice To Villain, Jennifer Katherine Staehle
Shakespeare's Evil: From Vice To Villain, Jennifer Katherine Staehle
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis serves as an investigation of the Elizabethan villain and the ways this character contributes to the ongoing dialogue concerning morality. Through the examination of the evolution of evil, villainy, and morality via Shakespeare's villains Richard and Iago, one can conclude that Shakespeare's contribution to the discussion of evil, which still goes on today, is that evil is a part of human nature. Not only are his villains humorous and entertaining, but Richard and Iago are relatable, pitiful, and raise questions about the evil inherent in human nature. These characters challenge the way Renaissance audiences habitually thought about right …

" Bienvenido Al Vecindario" : Inserting Spanglish Nonwords Into English Versus Spanish Phonological Neighborhoods., April Pufahl
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
If speech perception and production share lexical representations, then properties of these representations should have similar effects in both modalities. Likewise, if the system supporting lexical processing is fundamentally the same regardless of the language implemented, then a given property should produce the same effect across all languages. However, previous research suggests cross-modal and cross-linguistic differences for one property: phonological neighborhood density, a measure of the number of similar-sounding words in a language. These studies have relied on existing words, affording little control over the numerous, and possibly confounding, properties associated with each word. To avoid these potential pitfalls, I …
Pharmacological Targeting Of Mutant P53 - Hsf1 Feed Forward Circuit, Dun Li
Pharmacological Targeting Of Mutant P53 - Hsf1 Feed Forward Circuit, Dun Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tumor suppressor protein p53 responds to cellular stress by activating transcriptional and transcription-independent programs that induce apoptosis, growth arrest or senescence. Given its critical tumor suppressing role, p53 is often mutated in human cancers. Once altered by missense mutations in the DNA-binding domain, mutant p53 (mutp53) protein becomes highly stabilized in tumors, which is critical for mutp53′s oncogenic gain-of function. Current insight into the mechanism of tumor-specific stabilization of mutp53 is fragmentary and largely derived from ectopically constructed cell systems. We find that in human cancer cells endogenous mutp53, despite its ability to interact with MDM2, suffers from a profound …
The Effects Of Cpg And Upa Dinucleotides On The Attenuation Of Poliovirus By Codon Pair Deoptimization, Malka Arabov
The Effects Of Cpg And Upa Dinucleotides On The Attenuation Of Poliovirus By Codon Pair Deoptimization, Malka Arabov
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Codon pair bias, the preferential pairing of certain codons over others, has been observed in all species analyzed ranging from bacteria to mammals. Previous research has shown that artificial coupling of underrepresented codon pairs (codon pair deoptimization) in viral genomes (such as poliovirus and influenza virus) reduces gene function and leads to virus death or attenuation. Although the reason for this phenomenon is unclear, increasing underrepresented codon pairs in an RNA viral coding region consequently increases the frequency of CpG and UpA dinucleotides. These dinucleotides are suppressed in a variety of species and may be responsible for attenuation by codon …
The Adenovirus L4-22k Protein Serves As The Master Regulator To Coordinate Late Gene Expression And Viral Dna Packaging, Diana Guimet
The Adenovirus L4-22k Protein Serves As The Master Regulator To Coordinate Late Gene Expression And Viral Dna Packaging, Diana Guimet
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The adenovirus L4-22K protein is multifunctional and critical for different aspects of viral infection. Following DNA replication, increasing amounts of the L4-22K protein are observed prior to the appearance of other late viral proteins. We found that L4-22K controls viral gene expression at the post-transcriptional level and regulates the accumulation of the L4-33K protein, another critical viral regulator, at the level of alternative pre-mRNA splicing. This initiates an activation cascade of late viral proteins, while early genes are being turned off. To gain a better understanding of the mechanism of action of L4-22K, we sought to map the critical elements …
Structural Change In Impact Altered Phyllosilicates As Detected By Laboratory Spectroscopy And Applied To The Remote Sensing Of The Surface Of Mars, Lonia Rachael Friedlander
Structural Change In Impact Altered Phyllosilicates As Detected By Laboratory Spectroscopy And Applied To The Remote Sensing Of The Surface Of Mars, Lonia Rachael Friedlander
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Atomic-scale mineral properties directly control detectable macroscopic properties. These include reactivity and stability as well as characteristic vibrational and electronic spectroscopic features. The connection between structure and spectroscopic properties in minerals is of fundamental importance to the interpretation of remote sensing data, especially in planetary science where ground-truth is very difficult. On planets without plate tectonics such as Mars, meteoritic impacts are a fundamental geologic process known to affect the structure of planetary surfaces, as well as their mineralogy. This work uses a wide range of laboratory spectroscopic techniques to detect and investigate structural change in impact-altered phyllosilicates. The analysis …
Polymodal Grain-Size Modes In Long Island Sands, Silts, And Weathered Bedrock, Courtney Anne Melrose
Polymodal Grain-Size Modes In Long Island Sands, Silts, And Weathered Bedrock, Courtney Anne Melrose
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The purpose of this study is to determine if grain size modes already present in weathered bedrock sediments can be retained and inherited in derived, or processed sediments. To test this theory, weathered bedrock sediment, as well as Cretaceous aged sands and silts, Glacial sands and silts, Loess-like silt sediment, and glacially transported granitic gneisses were collected and analyzed for grain size. This study is based on the implicit assumption that grain size modes are indicative only of process, and are not reflective of modes present in the parent material of the sediment. A distinct pattern of grain size modes …
Using Seismic Observations And Modeling To Place Constraint On The Structure Beneath Japan And Central America, Hui Long
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Understanding Earth's internal structure by seismic observations, both temporally and spatially, is key in seismology. In this thesis, I constrained structural changes beneath the Japan subduction zone based on a newly developed theory, and detailed mid to lower mantle structure beneath Central America by waveform and travel time observations and modeling. A newly developed theory states that the differential wave field of two repeated sources in a temporally changed medium can be equivalently treated as wave fields propagating from virtual point sources or volumetric sources. The virtual point sources or volumetric sources are located at the place of temporal changes, …
Zeitgeist Modernista Y El Universo Literario De à Ngeles Vicente: Narrativa Femenina De Principios Del Siglo Veinte., Ana Fernandez Gonzalez
Zeitgeist Modernista Y El Universo Literario De à Ngeles Vicente: Narrativa Femenina De Principios Del Siglo Veinte., Ana Fernandez Gonzalez
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the life and work of à ngeles Vicente (1878-?), a Spanish turn of the Nineteenth and beginning of the Twentieth century writer, and her relationship to modernity. Addressing an inadequate treatment of the cultural scene of the 1900-39 period regarding women's literature, this work contributes to a corpus of writing by a cohort of female writers who have not yet been widely studied, comparing Vicente´s writing with that of her contemporaries such as Emilia Pardo Bazán, SofÃa Casanova, and Carmen de Burgos. Vicente was strongly influenced by ideas circulating at the time, especially socialism, feminism and theosophy, …
