Transformative Skin: The Ongoing Legacy Of Inuit And Yupik Women's Tattoos, Mariah Carrillo

Art & Art History ETDs

Feminine indigenous tattoo traditions of the American Arctic have often been overlooked in scholarly literature due to colonial pre-conceptions regarding native gender roles and the nature of adornment. Modern Euro-American conceptions of skin and self often rely on rigid, essentialized categories, such as race and gender, to mark identity onto the individual body. However, the Inuit and Yupik peoples of Alaska and Canada regarded personal essence as fluid and transformative, a belief made visible in the networks of sewn lines that declared a womans status and agency. This text examines both written ethnological records and a diverse range of material …

Secondary Student Outcomes And Perspectives On A Multiple Pathways Approach To Education : Engagement, Achievement, And Transitions., Lisa-Anne Ferris Dec 2014

Secondary Student Outcomes And Perspectives On A Multiple Pathways Approach To Education : Engagement, Achievement, And Transitions., Lisa-Anne Ferris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Career and Technical Education, earlier known as Vocational Education, has been formally part of public education since 1917. Federal policies have been used to support linking academic and vocationally-based curricula to give secondary and postsecondary students practical work experience within schools to prepare them for the workforce (Gordon, 2008). The current policy, The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, or Perkins IV, is the most recent policy to integrate academic and vocationally-based curricula’s using a career pathway model under Programs of Study (POS) (USDE, 2013). POS are career pathways that students choose in the beginning of their high …

Empathic Accuracy And Aggression In Couples: Individual And Dyadic Links, Shiri Cohen, Marc S. Schulz, Sabrina R. Liu, Muhannad Halassa, Robert J. Waldinger

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This study examined links between intimate partner aggression and empathic accuracy – how accurately partners can read one another’s emotions – during highly affective moments from couples’ (N = 109) video recall of laboratory-based discussions of upsetting events. Less empathic accuracy between partners was generally related to higher levels of aggression by both partners. More specific patterns emerged based on the type of aggression and emotion being expressed. Women’s poorer ability to read their partners’ vulnerable and positive emotions was linked to both men’s and women’s greater physical and psychological aggression. Moreover, women’s inaccuracy in reading their partner’s hostility was …

Differential Protein Expression Of Caco-2 Cells Treated With Selenium Nanoparticles Compared With Sodium Selenite And Selenomethionine, Linglin Fu, Xuxia Yan, Xinming Ruan, Junda Lin, Yanbo Wang

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

The study was designed to determine the differential protein expression of Caco-2 cells treated with different forms of selenium including sodium selenite, selenomethionine (Se-Met), and selenium nanoparticles (nano-Se). Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and mass spectrometry (MS) were used to identify the differentially expressed proteins. The results indicated that seven protein spots, ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 (E2), glutathione synthetases (GS), triosephosphate isomerase (TSP), T-complex protein 1 subunit zeta (TCPZ), lamin-B1, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein F (hnRNP F), and superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (Cu, Zn-SOD) were significantly different among all the groups. According to the order of control, sodium selenite, Se-Met, and Nano-Se, the …

Study Abroad And Moral Development, Andrew B. Johnson, Danielle R. Hathcock Dec 2014

Study Abroad And Moral Development, Andrew B. Johnson, Danielle R. Hathcock

eJournal of Public Affairs

Why should students study abroad? The standard answer universities give cites three types of benefit: academic, cultural, and professional. We argue that this answer sells the value of study abroad short. Just as important as any of these benefits is the value study abroad has in promoting moral development. Drawing on key ideas of the seminal developmental psychologists Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg, we make the case that study abroad can facilitate moral development, whether one understands morality in utilitarian, Kantian, or sentimentalist terms. It does so by helping students take the perspective of those who are culturally different, inducing …

The Challenge Of Global Governance In The 21st Century: A Review Of Three Ted Talks, Steven Elliott-Gower, Yohannes Woldermariam

eJournal of Public Affairs

These three TED Talks address global challenges, and how we (the world’s seven billion inhabitants), our national governments, and the international community can make the world a better, safer, more prosperous place. In this review, we will summarize each talk, offer a brief critique, and then synthesize some of the most salient points of each. We will review the talks in chronological order.

An Examination Of The Attitude Of 5–12 Instrumental Music Educators Towards Using Wind Band Literature Written By Female Composers And The Relationship Of Those Attitudes To Selected Demographic Variables, Carrie J. Jensen Dec 2014

An Examination Of The Attitude Of 5–12 Instrumental Music Educators Towards Using Wind Band Literature Written By Female Composers And The Relationship Of Those Attitudes To Selected Demographic Variables, Carrie J. Jensen

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Traditionally, pieces by female composers are noticeably absent from many instrumental music concert programs. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitude of 5-12 instrumental music teachers toward utilizing and programming wind band literature composed by females and to examine the relationship between their attitude and selected demographic variables. A sample of grade 5-12 instrumental music teachers from Nebraska and Kansas was surveyed about their beliefs on programming wind band literature by female composers, the process of choosing literature, and evaluating the merit of band literature. In addition, the data were analyzed to determine the relationship between the …

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith Dec 2014

What Medical Education Can Do To Ensure Robust Language Development In Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, R. Pollard, C. Rathmann, S. Smith

Linguistics Faculty Works

The typical medical education curriculum does not address language development for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. However, this issue is medical because of the frequency with which DHH children as a population face health complications due to linguistic deprivation. The critical period for language development is early; if a child does not acquire an intact language before age five, the child is unlikely to ever have native-like use of any language. Such linguistic deprivation carries risks of cognitive delay and psycho-social health difficulties. Spoken language is inaccessible for many DHH children despite assistive-technology developments. But sign languages, because they are …

All Materials

On 1 December 2011 the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice-core project reached its final depth of 3405 m. The WAIS Divide ice core is not only the longest US ice core to date, but is also the highest-quality deep ice core, including ice from the brittle ice zone, that the US has ever recovered. The methods used at WAIS Divide to handle and log the drilled ice, the procedures used to safely retrograde the ice back to the US National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) and the methods used to process and sample the ice at the NICL are …
