Scaling Group Analysis On Mhd Free Convective Heat And Mass Transfer Over A Stretching Surface With Suction / Injection, Heat Source/Sink Considering Viscous Dissipation And Chemical Reaction Effects, Hunegnaw Dessie, Naikoti Kishan
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper concerns with scaling group analysis on MHD free convective heat and mass transfer over stretching surface considering effects of thermal-diffusion and diffusion-thermo with suction /injection, heat source/sink and chemical reaction by taking into account viscous dissipation. Scaling group transformations are used to convert the partial differential equations of governing equations into ordinary differential equation and are solved numerically by Keller Box Method. Numerical results obtained for different parameters are drawn graphically and their effects on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are discussed and shown graphically. Skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are presented in table. It is …

Steady Quadratic Stokes Flow Past Deformed Sphere: A Novel Perturbation Technique, Deepak K. Srivastava, Nirmal Srivastava, Raja R. Yadav
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the problem of steady quadratic Stokes flow past a deformed sphere has been tackled with the use of a novel perturbation technique in both situations when a uniform stream is along the axis of symmetry (axial flow) and when it is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry (transverse flow). The most general form of the deformed sphere, governed by polar equation, is considered here for the study. The general expressions for axial and transverse Stokes drag for deformed sphere has been derived up to the second order of deformation parameter for parabolic and stagnation like parabolic flow. …

Background: Immigrant women may be regarded as a vulnerable population with respect to access and navigation of maternity care services. They may encounter difficulties when accessing culturally safe and appropriate maternity care, which may be further exacerbated by language difficulties and discriminatory practices or attitudes. The project aimed to understand ethnocultural food and health practices and how these intersect in a particular social context of cultural adaptation and adjustment in order to improve the care-giving capacities of health practitioners working in multicultural perinatal clinics.
Methods: This four-phase study employed a case study design allowing for multiple means of data collection …

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) build massive, spatially complex, biogenic structures that alter the biotic and abiotic environment and provide a variety of ecosystem services. Unlike rocky shores, where mussels can attach to the primary substrate, soft sediments are unsuitable for mussel attachment. We used a simple lattice model, field sampling, and field and laboratory experiments to examine facilitation of recruitment (i.e., preferential larval, juvenile, and adult attachment to mussel biogenic structure) and its role in the development of power-law spatial patterns observed in Maine, USA, soft-bottom mussel beds. The model demonstrated that recruitment facilitation produces power-law spatial structure similar …

Insurance, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz, Bradley S. Wolff
Mercer Law Review
No dramatic reversal of direction or case of first impression occurred this survey period. Rather, the courts continued to clarify and refine the fine lines of Georgia insurance law. Multiple opinions help carriers to better handle time-limit demands and to effectively reserve rights to known coverage issues. After decades of confusing opinions, it was finally made crystal-clear that an "occurrence" can exist where the damage is to the insured's work. The Great Recession brought Georgia an abundance of insurance rulings related to the risks encountered by financial institutions.

Study And Manipulation Of Electron Tunneling Through Quantum Dots, Pradeep Krishna Bhadrachalam
Study And Manipulation Of Electron Tunneling Through Quantum Dots, Pradeep Krishna Bhadrachalam
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Fermi-Dirac distribution is the fundamental property which governs the electron energy distribution in solids. At finite temperatures, Fermi-Dirac thermal smearing of electron energies limits the operation of many electronic, opto-electronic and spintronic devices. Examples include single electron transistors, quantum dot resonant tunnel diodes for single photon detection, and single electron turnstile devices. To overcome this intrinsic limitation of Fermi-Dirac thermal smearing, these devices have typically been operated at cryogenic temperatures. Room temperature operation of these devices could be realized, however, if the thermal smearing of electron energies could be suppressed. Until now, studies in the fields of electron-tunneling refrigerators and …

In this project, I contend that African American rhetoric, namely African American sermonic rhetoric, constitutes a distinct, culturally specialized variety of rhetoric generated out of the distinctive circumstances of the African American Diasporic experience. I present the study of African American homiletics as a lens through which to view the intersections between culture and aural text. In order to examine the rhetorical tools peculiar to the African American religious tradition. I perform a solely rhetorical explication of many of the typical elements of Black Church sermons. To allow for this process, I have conducted archival research in order to generate …
Compact Modeling Methodology Development For Thermomechanical Assessment In High-End Mobile Applications-Planar And 3d Tsv Packages, Fahad Mirza
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
For the last few decades, Moore's law has been driving the microelectronics industry to achieve high performance with small form-factors at a reasonable cost. The continued miniaturization of the transistors has resulted in unparalleled growth in the electronics industry. Further performance increment via size scaling; however, will not be costeffective and difficult to manufacture. To achieve further performance enhancement at a reasonable cost, advanced packaging is being leveraged. Advanced packaging technologies such as System-on-chip (SOCs), system-in-package (SiPs), and 3-D TSV ICs provide significant power and performance enhancement without having the need to migrate to the higher technology node. As planar …

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (Sias) And The Social Phobia Scale (Sps): A Comparison Of Two Short-Form Versions., Thomas A. Fergus, David P. Valentiner, Hyun-Soo Kim, Patrick B. Mcgrath
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
The widespread use of Mattick and Clarke’s (1998) Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Social Phobia Scale (SPS) led two independent groups of researchers to develop short-forms of these measures (Fergus, Valentiner, McGrath, Gier-Lonsway, & Kim, 2012; Peters, Sunderland, Andrews, Rapee, & Mattick, 2012). This three-part study examined the psychometric properties of Fergus et al.’s and Peters et al.’s short-forms of the SIAS and SPS using an American nonclinical adolescent sample in Study 1 (N = 98), American anxiety disorder patient sample in Study 2 (N = 117), and both a South Korean college student sample (N = 341) and …

A Movement Tool Kit for the Divergent and Convergent CPS Guidelines:
Instruction Cards and Activity Floor Mats
Movement is as natural to humans as breathing is, and, yet, passivity starts early in schools. We are taught to sit still and in silence for long periods of time. By the time we reach adulthood and enter the workforce, we have almost forgotten our sense of embodiment. This lack of movement is counter-productive, not only to learning but to the development of creativity as well. For this project, I designed a tool to recapture the joy and playfulness of movement. Furthermore, the …

Understanding And Applying Design Thinking, Courtney Zwart
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
The intent of this project was to gain an in-depth understanding of design thinking, both by internalizing its principles and fundamentals and applying them to an actual design challenge. I began with an extensive review of the literature and also interviewed an experienced design thinking practitioner. I then completed an 8-week online course in design thinking offered by the University of Virginia, which provided instruction in a 15-step approach to design thinking as well as key tools to use in the approach. Finally, I applied this approach to a design challenge owned by a leading consultancy in New York City. …

Trends In Crime Measures: British Columbia, 1999-2013, Paul J. Brantingham, Kathryn Wuschke, Silas Melo
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
Three different measures of crime intensity are available in British Columbia: the Standard Crime Rate (SCR) which measures the number of crimes per 100,000 population; the Crime Severity Index (CSI) which measures the weighted risk to residents of a police jurisdiction; and the Crime Gravity Score (CGS) which measures the seriousness of the set of crimes handled by police in a particular jurisdiction.
All three measures show declines over the past decade. British Columbians are safer now than they were in the early 2000’s. Police resource implications of the measures are different. The SCR and CSI have both declined by …

Relationships Between Wellness-Related Behaviors And Academic Performance, Helene M. Alfano
Dissertations
This study investigated possible relationships between specific wellness-related behaviors and academic achievement by using self-reported data from the 2009 Michigan Youth Risk Behavior Survey (MYRBS). Participants were students from 50 public high schools in Michigan in grades 9 through 12 (N = 3,411). Survey responses were analyzed with an ordinal logistic regression procedure using SPSS software. Beyond the control model, the block of variables on (a) diet explained 9.3% of the variance in the outcome measure, an additional amount of variance that was statistically significant and practically important. Each of the remaining blocks, including (b) physical activity, (c) self-perception of …
Formation Of Successful Partnerships Between Rural Community College Workforce Development Offices And Businesses: Motivation, Social Capitaland Communication, Ryan Nausieda
Dissertations
The financial resources in rural areas are not plentiful, which has impacted the workforce development offices’ ability to provide training on their own. These workforce development offices rely on partnerships to provide training to the community. There are multiple motivations that align between workforce development office and community organizations. The social capital in a partnership is utilized in these rural areas to accomplish mutual goals between multiple organizations that one could not complete on alone. Social capital in a partnership includes trust, centrality, information, and density. Communication helps to support the motivation, social capital and hence the sustainability of a …

Voys Lessons: Whirling Words In Chaucer’S “House Of Rumour", Nicola Blake
Publications and Research
“Voys Lessons: Whirling Words in Chaucer’s ‘House of Rumour’” examines the lability of sound and its use in the dissemination, transposition, and authorship of stories within The House of Fame, a text exemplifying the mobility and flexibility of misused or unhinged words, as expressed through sound as opposed to text. By engaging the use and interpretation of sound in contrast to words, this new reading concentrates on the idea of narrative as material artifact with limited stasis. Geffrey’s pseudo-authorship, through his voyeuristic stance, engages the textuality of sounds and shows the related subtlety, elasticity, and democratic sociohistorical aspect of …

Verbal references appeared with an average of 13.2 references per hour of animation. The connotations of these references often went against negative stereotypes of disability. These findings …
Dynamic Surveillance: Evolving Procedures In Metadata And Foreign Content Collection After Snowden, Peter Margulies
Dynamic Surveillance: Evolving Procedures In Metadata And Foreign Content Collection After Snowden, Peter Margulies
UC Law Journal
This Article outlines a dynamic conception of national security surveillance that justifies programs disclosed by Edward Snowden but calls for greater transparency and accountability in the wake of Snowden’s revelations. The dynamic conception supports the legality of section 215 of the USA Patriot Act and section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (“FISA”), programs that received informed input from all three branches of government. Each program is part of a long democratic experiment in the integration of secrecy, deliberation, and strategic advantage that dates to the Constitution’s framing. Both programs reflect Congress’s concern that intelligence collection be sufficiently agile …
The Trans Panic Defense: Masculinity, Heteronormativity, And The Murder Of Transgender Women, Cynthia Lee
The Trans Panic Defense: Masculinity, Heteronormativity, And The Murder Of Transgender Women, Cynthia Lee
UC Law Journal
When a heterosexual man is charged with murdering a transgender woman with whom he has been sexually intimate, one defense strategy is to assert what has been called the trans panic defense. The defendant claiming this defense will say that the discovery that the victim was biologically male provoked him into a heat of passion causing him to lose self-control. If the jury finds that the defendant was actually and reasonably provoked, it can acquit him of murder and find him guilty of the lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter. The trans panic defense strategy is troubling because it appeals to …

Price Fixing The Priceless? Discouraging Collusion In The Secondary Art Market, Nicole Dornbusch Horowitz

In the 1920s and 1930s, major oil companies took advantage of market conditions to raise gasoline prices. They sold a limited amount of gasoline on smaller submarkets and the remainder of their gasoline by other methods. Despite the fact that the submarkets only represented a small portion of the overall gasoline market, pricing in the greater market was based on them. Thus, through collusive agreements, major oil companies were able to raise prices in the overall market by inflating prices in the smaller markets. In United States v. Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., the U.S. Supreme Court held that these agreements constituted …
Scientific Application Acceleration Utilizing Heterogeneous Architectures, Edwin Weill
Scientific Application Acceleration Utilizing Heterogeneous Architectures, Edwin Weill
All Theses
Within the past decade, there have been substantial leaps in computer architectures to exploit the parallelism that is inherently present in many applications. The scientific community has benefited from the emergence of not only multi-core processors, but also other, less traditional architectures including general purpose graphical processing units (GPGPUs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and Intel's many integrated cores (MICs) architecture (i.e. Xeon Phi). The popularity of the GPGPU has increased rapidly because of their ability to perform massive amounts of parallel computation quickly and at low cost with an ease of programmability. Also, with the addition of high-level programming …
