Pain Isn’T Punishment, Liana Thibault
Pain Isn’T Punishment, Liana Thibault
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph:
When people experience pain or something bad happens to them, the most common response to the situation is “Why me?”. It is human nature to believe that if something goes wrong it is not really our fault and we place blame on someone else, in most cases God. In his text, Where the Hell is God? Richard Leonard writes: “We grow through pain, but it is not sent to make us grow” (8). Leonard argues that while God did not directly create pain for humans to make our …

Incentivizing Employees Through Benefits And Recognition Programs At Pace University, Diana Dumitru
Incentivizing Employees Through Benefits And Recognition Programs At Pace University, Diana Dumitru
Master in Public Administration Theses
The nonprofit sector has seen a 20% increase in the number of higher education institutions over a period of 10 years, from 2000-2010, (Blackwood et al. 2012), which had a big impact on the public charity revenues and expenses. In this fast-paced growing environment, employees working in higher education are directly influenced by the changes and increase in the number of students. Motivating employees in such an environment can be challenging, therefore finding a comprehensive package that includes fair compensation levels, benefits, awards and recognition ceremonies and other incentives such as promotions and opportunities for growth are important for the …

How Much For An Interval? A Set? A Twin Set? A P-Box? A Kaucher Interval? Towards An Economics-Motivated Approach To Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
A natural idea of decision making under uncertainty is to assign a fair price to different alternatives, and then to use these fair prices to select the best alternative. In this paper, we show how to assign a fair price under different types of uncertainty.
Granularity Helps Explain Seemingly Irrational Features Of Human Decision Making, Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich
Granularity Helps Explain Seemingly Irrational Features Of Human Decision Making, Joe Lorkowski, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Starting from well-known studies by Kahmenan and Tarsky, researchers have found many examples when our decision making -- and our decision making -- seem to be irrational. In this chapter, we show that this seemingly irrational decision making can be explained if we take into account that human abilities to process information are limited; as a result, instead of the exact values of different quantities, we operate with granules that contain these values. On several examples, we show that optimization under such granularity restriction indeed leads to observed human decision making. Thus, granularity helps explain seemingly irrational human decision making.

For, as I take it, Universal History, the history of what man has accomplished in this world, is at bottom the History of the Great Men who have worked here. They were the leaders of men, these great ones; the modellers, patterns, and in a wide sense creators, of whatsoever the general mass of men contrived to do or to attain; all things that we see standing accomplished in the world are properly the outer material result, the practical realization and embodiment, of Thoughts that dwelt in the Great Men sent into the world: the soul of the whole world's …

Male Marriage Wage Premium And Marriage Market Competition, Da Deng
Male Marriage Wage Premium And Marriage Market Competition, Da Deng
All Theses
Three main hypotheses are proposed to explain the male marriage premium. They are marriage selection hypothesis, male-female labor specialization hypothesis and simply discrimination. This paper tries to test if marriage selection hypothesis explains the male marriage premium. The effect of marriage selection, which means males with higher productivity have higher possibility to be chosen into marriage, should be positively correlated to the marriage market competition level in the area and thus in area with higher marriage market competition, a higher density of high productivity males should be observed among married males. On the other hand, the labor specialization is a …

Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Aridification Across Southwest North America, Shannon Miller Jones
Spatial And Seasonal Variations In Aridification Across Southwest North America, Shannon Miller Jones
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Southwestern region of North America (SWNA) is projected to become more arid throughout the 21st century as precipitation (P) and evaporation (E) rates change with increasing global temperatures. Trends in the regional surface moisture balance (P−E) of SWNA vary between the arid southern subregion (mostly Northern Mexico) and the more temperate northern subregion (Southwest US), depending on the relative contributions of cold and warm season P and E. Interpreting the spatial and seasonal variations of the projected aridification is important for understanding the potential impacts of climate change on SWNA regional hydrology. We compare the projected trends in P, …

Comics And Illustration From The Written; The Conversion Of A Story From Prose To Graphic Depiction., Kayla A. White Ms.
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This is a thesis that details the process of writing a short 30 page novel, and then converting the subsequent story into a graphic format via illustrations and into a comic book layout. The story itself deals in reworking our learned assumptions of good and evil, specifically in the supernatural and human possibility for both. The comic book format is an exploration of my reader’s different responses to the written and the graphic.

Relationship Between Relative Hive Entrance Position And Dance Floor Location, Chelsea E. Corrigan
Relationship Between Relative Hive Entrance Position And Dance Floor Location, Chelsea E. Corrigan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
It has been observed that returning honey bee foragers congregate with unemployed foragers and food receiver bees in a localized region of the hive known as the dance floor. Here, the returning foragers advertise food sources via the waggle dance. It was hypothesized that the close proximity of the dance floor to the hive entrance was related to foragers minimizing time and travel inside the hive. The hive entrance is conventionally located at the bottom of the hive. It was suggested that this location was ideal for easy removal of debris. This correlation between dance floor location and hive entrance …

I lean against the chalkboard and wait for the young woman to speak. I feel especially put together because I am wearing an outfit; I bought all three pieces at the same time, indicating my financial stability and dedication to appearance.
It is a Friday, and this introductory physics student is casual in her sorority letter jersey, jeans and sneakers. Her hair is long, her skin porcelain; these traits do not distinguish her from her sorority sisters. She is exceptional, however, in her habit of obsessively leaning forward in her front-row desk, as if preparing to dive over the top. …

The Role Of Tuskegee Institute In The Establishment Of A Higher Education Pipeline For Black Students: The Case Of Snow Hill Institute, Barbara J. Aaron Brooks
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the role of collegiate Black women in the establishment and development of rural industrial education in the post-Civil War and segregated south. Black women’s voices and experiences have generally been excluded from the narrative of Black education and thus excluded from the larger conversation on Black education progression. This study, therefore, focused on Black women in this process. This study was important because it presented an examination of Black women’s experiences in rural industrial education, while attempting to chronicle the rich history of Snow Hill Institute. The institute served as a continuum …
The House Of Windsor: Accentuating The Heteronormativity In The Tax Incentives For Procreation, Anthony C. Infanti
The House Of Windsor: Accentuating The Heteronormativity In The Tax Incentives For Procreation, Anthony C. Infanti
Washington Law Review
Following the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor, many seem to believe that the fight for marriage equality at the federal level is over and that any remaining work in this area is at the state level. Belying this conventional wisdom, this Article plumbs the gap between the promise of Windsor and the reality that heteronormativity has been one of the core building blocks of the federal tax system. Eradicating embedded heteronormativity will take far more than a single court decision (or even revenue ruling); it will take years of work uncovering the subtle ways in which …

Assessing Aascu’S Global Challenges Blended Model Course, Shala Mills, Jian Sun
eJournal of Public Affairs
In 2006 the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) launched its Global Engagement Initiative and began developing a set of curricular tools for faculty to use in educating globally competent citizens. In 2011 the initiative developed a national blended model course. That course has now been delivered to more than 1,200 students on 15 campuses across the country and abroad. This paper explores the effectiveness of the national blended course in meeting its stated learning objectives. In 2013-14, pre/post-tests were conducted on three pilot campuses. The pre/post-tests indicate that students’ knowledge about global issues and ways to get …
Extended Necessary Condition For Local Operations And Classical Communication: Tight Bound For All Measurements, Scott M. Cohen
Extended Necessary Condition For Local Operations And Classical Communication: Tight Bound For All Measurements, Scott M. Cohen
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We give a necessary condition that a separable measurement can be implemented by local quantum operations and classical communication (LOCC) in any finite number of rounds of communication, generalizing and strengthening a result obtained previously. That earlier result involved a bound that is tight when the number of measurement operators defining the measurement is relatively small. The present results generalize that bound to one that is tight for any finite number of measurement operators, and we also provide an extension which holds when that number is infinite. We apply these results to the famous example on a 3 × 3 …
