The Influence Of Proton Order On The Thermal Conductivity Of Ice, Jonathan Tammo Siebert
The Influence Of Proton Order On The Thermal Conductivity Of Ice, Jonathan Tammo Siebert
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Water is one of the most important reasons for the possibility of life on earth. Even though water and ice have been in the focus of countless studies they are far from being understood. Despite their simple molecular structure, especially the ability of the molecule to form hydrogen bonds leads to a variety of interesting properties. One of them is the density maximum of water in its liquid state. This is caused by the hydrogen bound hexagonal structure of low pressure ice. In this work the influence of proton ordering on the thermal conductivity of hexagonal ice is examined. It …
Bolometric Effect And Phonon Cooling In Graphene-Superconductor Junctions, Heli Vora
Bolometric Effect And Phonon Cooling In Graphene-Superconductor Junctions, Heli Vora
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Graphene, a two-dimensional allotrope of graphite, possesses remarkable electronic properties which stem from the fact that the electrons in graphene are described by the Dirac-Weyl Hamiltonian. As a result, graphene exhibits a linear energy dispersion relation with zero effective mass. With its single-atomic-layer thickness, not only electrons but also phonons are of a two dimensional nature, differentiating graphene from the conventional semiconductor based two-dimensional electron gas systems. The combination of two-dimensional phonons, ultra small volume, low density of states and linear energy spectrum allows graphene to have weak electron-phonon coupling and extremely small electronic heat capacity. These properties make it …
Qcd Factorization For Heavy Quarkonium Production And Fragmentation Functions, Hong Zhang
Qcd Factorization For Heavy Quarkonium Production And Fragmentation Functions, Hong Zhang
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
From the Tevatron and the LHC data, it is clear that current models for the heavy quarkonium production are not able to explain the polarization of produced heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum pT. A new approach to evaluate the heavy quarkonium production, by expanding the cross section in powers of 1/pT before the expansion in powers of &alphas, was proposed recently. In terms of the QCD factorization, it is proved that both the leading and next-to-leading power terms in 1/pT for the cross sections can be systematically factorized to all orders in powers …
Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase (Pi3k) P11alpha Catalytic Subunit In Adipose Tissue Regulates Systemic Metabolism, Victoria Leigh Boughton
Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase (Pi3k) P11alpha Catalytic Subunit In Adipose Tissue Regulates Systemic Metabolism, Victoria Leigh Boughton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Adipose tissue is a highly insulin responsive organ that contributes to metabolic regulation. Insulin resistance in the adipose tissue affects systemic lipid and glucose homeostasis. Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) mediates downstream insulin signaling in adipose tissue, but its physiological role in vivo remains unclear. Using Cre recombinase driven by the aP2 promoter, we created mice that lack the class 1A PI3K catalytic subunit p110alpha or p110beta specifically in the white and brown adipose tissue. The loss of p11alpha, not p110beta, resulted in increased adiposity, glucose intolerance and liver steatosis. Mice lacking p110alpha in adipose tissue exhibited a decrease in energy expenditure …
The Authoritarian Party Identity And Its Impact On American Political Polarization, Julie Ann Wronski
The Authoritarian Party Identity And Its Impact On American Political Polarization, Julie Ann Wronski
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Political scientists and pundits alike have characterized the American electorate as being increasingly polarized in recent decades. This polarization has been framed in the context of the " culture war," where party elites and citizens have become more ideologically divided on salient social issues. Recent contributions by political scientists suggest that the sources of " culture war" polarization are more deeply rooted in individual traits, and that partisan polarization represents a " worldview evolution" that has split citizens into Democratic and Republican camps on the basis of their needs for order, certainty, and security - conceptualized as authoritarianism. This argument …
Multi-Armed Bandits With Applications To Markov Decision Processes And Scheduling Problems, Isa Mithqal Muqattash
Multi-Armed Bandits With Applications To Markov Decision Processes And Scheduling Problems, Isa Mithqal Muqattash
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The focus of this work is on practical applications of stochastic multi-armed bandits (MABs) in two distinctive settings. First, we develop and present REGA, a novel adaptive sampling-based algorithm for control of finite-horizon Markov decision processes (MDPs) with very large state spaces and small action spaces. We apply a variant of the epsilon-greedy multi-armed bandit algorithm to each stage of the MDP in a recursive manner, thus computing an estimation of the " reward-to-go" value at each stage of the MDP. We provide a finite-time analysis of REGA. In particular, we provide a bound on the probability that the approximation …
Does The Seasonal Acidification Of Spawning Habitat Influence Offspring Co2 Reaction Norms Through Transgenerational Plasticity In The Coastal Fish Species, Menidia Menidia?, Christopher S. Murray
Does The Seasonal Acidification Of Spawning Habitat Influence Offspring Co2 Reaction Norms Through Transgenerational Plasticity In The Coastal Fish Species, Menidia Menidia?, Christopher S. Murray
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Experimental assessments of species vulnerabilities to ocean acidification are rapidly expanding, yet the potential for short- and long-term adaptation to high CO2 by contemporary marine organisms remains poorly understood. We used a novel experimental approach that combined bi-weekly sampling of a wild, spawning fish population (Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia) with standardized offspring CO2 exposure experiments and parallel pH monitoring of a coastal ecosystem. We assessed whether offspring produced at different times of the spawning season (April-July) would be similarly susceptible to elevated (~1,100 uatm, pHNBS = 7.77) and high CO2 levels (~2,300 uatm, pHNBS = 7.47). Early in the season …

Recombination Of Charge Carriers In Low Dielectric Constant Organic Solvent, Hung Cheng Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation consists of three projects: (1) Escape of Anions from Geminate Recombination due to Charge Delocalization. (2) Charge Separation of Electron-Hole Pairs (Exciplexes) Enhanced by Charge Delocalization. (3) Energies of Radical Anions Measured by Bimolecular Electron Transfer Equilibria Method. The first project studies geminate recombination of 23 radical anions (M*− ) with solvated protons (RH2+) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The recombination has two steps: (1) Diffusion of M*− and RH2+ together to form intimate (contact and solvent separated) ion pairs, driven by Coulomb attraction; (2) Annihilation of anions due to proton transfer (PT) from RH2 …

Properties Of Boron Phosphide Films Grown On Different Substrates And Conoscopic Study Of Sapphire, Ruifen Chen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Boron phosphide (BP) with its high capture cross section for thermal neutrons is potentially a great candidate material for neutron detectors. Bulk BP substrates are not readily available for developing detector devices therefor heteroepitaxial growth by CVD on commercially available substrates are currently being explored. The quality of BP films growth on commercial Si substrates is too poor for use in detector applications. In this thesis, we explore various substrates for suitability for BP heteroepitaxy by characterizing the crystalline quality of the epilayers grown under various growth conditions. Substrate materials used in this study include on-axis c-plane 6H-SiC, off-axis c-plane …

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a commonly used polymer that has some excellent properties, such as great strength and biocompatibility. Cellulose Acetate (CA) is another excellent polymer that has been employed in many applications, including drug. PVP-CA composite has both strength and flexible properties that can be used as ultrafiltration membranes or the drug release system. PVP-CA composites comprise a new class of materials that have been the scope of this work. In this research, the electrospun PVP-CA composites were prepared under different concentrations. Then, the impact of different electrospinning parameters on fiber diameters was investigated. Moreover, acetic acid and acetone were …
Diamond Detector--Material Science, Design And Application, Mengjia Gaowei
Diamond Detector--Material Science, Design And Application, Mengjia Gaowei
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Modern synchrotrons, such as the NSLS-II, will enable unprecedented science by having extremely high brightness and flux with exceptional beam stability. These capabilities create a harsh and demanding environment for measuring the characteristics of the x-ray beam. In many cases, existing measurement techniques fail completely, requiring the development of new detectors which can meet the demands of the synchrotron. The combination of diamond properties ranked diamond an appealing candidate in the field of radiation detection in extreme conditions and it has been used as x-ray sensor material for decades. However, only until the development of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process …
Investigation Of Bio-Inspired Hybrid Materials Through Polymer Infiltration Of Thermal Spray Formed Ceramic Templates, Katherine Claire Flynn
Investigation Of Bio-Inspired Hybrid Materials Through Polymer Infiltration Of Thermal Spray Formed Ceramic Templates, Katherine Claire Flynn
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
High strength and toughness are often mutually exclusive in engineered materials. This is especially true of ceramics and polymers. Ceramics exhibit high strength and stiffness, but are brittle while polymers are flaw tolerant but prone to deformation at low stresses. Nature overcomes this restriction in materials by strategically combining brittle components with tough organics, leading to materials with both a high strength and toughness. One of the most impressive natural composites is nacre consisting of mainly a brittle mineral phase, 95vol% calcium carbonate (aragonite), and 5vol% biopolymer (a combination of proteins and polysaccahrides). Nature combines constituents with poor macroscale properties …

Nano-scale tungsten trioxide particles have been synthesized by the flame spray pyrolysis method and a 3×3 mm2 sensor was made by the drop-coating method using the nanoparticles as the active element. After heat-treatment at 500 °C, the materials structure and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Sensing tests were carried out at 200 and 350 °C respectively, down to a trace nitric oxide concentration of 100 parts per billion. The sensor sensitivity was remarkable at these two working conditions employed in this work, providing evidence for the importance of flame spray pyrolysis method as …
Comparative Study Of Microstructure And Properties Of Thermal Sprayed Mcraly Bond Coatings, Michael William Inglima
Comparative Study Of Microstructure And Properties Of Thermal Sprayed Mcraly Bond Coatings, Michael William Inglima
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A series of experiments were performed in order to observe certain process-property trends in thermally sprayed MCrAlY bond coatings for thermal barrier coating (TBC) applications in gas-turbine engines. Firstly, the basis of gas-turbine operation and design is discussed with a focus on the Brayton cycle and basic thermodynamic properties with respect to both the thermal and fuel efficiency of the turbine. The high-temperature environment inside the gas-turbine engine creates an extremely corrosive medium in which the engineering components must operate with sufficient operating life times. These engineering constraints, both thermal/fuel efficiency and operating life, pose a serious problem during long …

Polyaniline/Cellulose Acetate Composite And Its Ammonium Ion Sensing Applications, Lei Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Conducting polymers have been investigated for years, since their discovery in 1977. Among them, polyaniline exhibits high electrical conductivity, leading to versatile applications, such as sensors, actuators, and catalysts. In this thesis, emeraldine salt polyaniline (ES-PANI) and cellulose acetate (CA) have been employed to produce composite fiber and films by three different methods: electrospinning, drop coating, and spin coating. The morphology and size of produced composites were studied by SEM. The results showed that the diameter of electrospun composite fiber decreases to nanosize, generating a nanofiber matrix that immobilize polyaniline particles. Sensing experiments were carried out at room temperature. Three …

Sapphire (α -Al2O3 ) is well-known as an important technological material primarily for the application as substrates for GaN based LEDs ( Light emitting diodes ). Additionally, sapphire is also characterized by properties such as high transparency, excellent scratch- resistance, chemical stability, high mechanical strength, good thermal conductivity and electric insulation. These make it attractive for wide use as optical windows, bearings, armor protections etc. The structure of sapphire is rhombohedral (a = b = c = 5.13 Å, α =β =γ =55.1°). But it can also be considered as pseudo-hexagonal (a = b = 4.759213Å, c = 12.9915867Å, α …

Processing And Characterization Of Ε -Wo3 Processed By Flame Spray Pyrolysis, Wen Ling Liao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Acetone is one of the biomarkers in our breath that may be used to control metabolic disorders, such as diabetes. Sensors that monitor acetone in breath with high specificity and high sensitivity are needed for this purpose. It has been found previously by our research group that nanostructure epsilon-phase WO3 -based sensors are highly selective to acetone compared to other volatile organic compounds found in breath. Since doping in metal oxides usually present stability issues in the long-term operation of a gas sensor, pure epsilon-WO3 is being explored as the sensing element of choice for develop a non-invasive method to …
Bio-Inspired Photon Absorption And Energy Transfer For Next Generation Photovoltaic Devices, Komal Magsi
Bio-Inspired Photon Absorption And Energy Transfer For Next Generation Photovoltaic Devices, Komal Magsi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Nature's solar energy harvesting system, photosynthesis, serves as a model for photon absorption, spectra broadening, and energy transfer. Photosynthesis harvests light far differently than photovoltaic cells. These differences offer both engineering opportunity and scientific challenges since not all of the natural photon absorption mechanisms have been understood. In return, solar cells can be a very sensitive probe for the absorption characteristics of molecules capable of transferring charge to a conductive interface. The objective of this scientific work is the advancement of next generation photovoltaics through the development and application of natural photo-energy transfer processes. Two scientific methods were used in …
The Use Of Biomaterials For Cell Function Enhancement: Acceleration Of Fibroblast Migration And Promotion Of Stem Cell Proliferation, Sisi Qin
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Wound healing and tissue regeneration proceed via fibroblast migration along three dimensional scaffolds composed of fibers with different diameters, spacing, and junction angles. In order to understand how each of these factors influences fibroblast migration, a technique for preparation of three dimensional fibrillar scaffolds was developed where the fiber diameters and the angles between adjacent fiber layers could be precisely controlled. In order to study the en-mass migration process, the agarose droplet method was chosen since it enabled accurate determinations of the dependence of the migration speed, focal adhesion distribution, and nuclear deformation on the fiber structures. Results showed that …

Investigation Of The Biochemical Mechanism For Cell-Substrate Mechanical Sensing, Vincent Anthony Ricotta
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Advancements in stem cell biology and materials science have enabled the development of new treatments for tissue repair. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), which are highly proliferative and can be induced to differentiate along several mesenchymal cell lineages, offer the possibility for pulpal regeneration and treatment of injured dentition. Polybutadiene (PB) may be used as a substrate for these cells. This elastomer can be spun casted into films of different thicknesses with different moduli. DPSCs grown on PB films, which are relatively hard (less than 1500 Å thick), biomineralize depositing crystalline calcium phosphate without a requirement for the typical induction …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Polyvinylpyrrolidone/Cu2+ Nanofibers, Zhuolin Xia
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Polymer/transition metal salt composite nanofibers have gained considerable attention in recent years. Doping of transition metal salt into the polymer matrix allows the fabrication of nanofibers with special functions. This goal of this study is to develop PVP/Cu2+ composite nanofibers for potential optical application. In this study, polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)/Cu2+ nanofibers with diameter of 200-900 nm were fabricated by electrospinning. Coper(II) nitrate trihydrate was added to PVP electrospinning solution. The electrospun nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive microscopy(EDS), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy(UV-vis). The results indicate that Cu2+ was successfully doped into PVP system and the electrospun PVP/ Cu2+ nanofibers show …
High Throughput Electrospinning Of High-Quality Nanofibers Via An Aluminum Disk Spinneret, Guokuo Zheng
High Throughput Electrospinning Of High-Quality Nanofibers Via An Aluminum Disk Spinneret, Guokuo Zheng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this work, a simple and efficient needleless high throughput electrospinning process using an aluminum disk spinneret with 24 holes is described. Electrospun mats produced by this setup consisted of fine fibers (nano-sized) of the highest quality while the productivity (yield) was many times that obtained from conventional single-needle electrospinning. The goal was to produce scaled-up amounts of the same or better quality nanofibers under variable concentration, voltage, and the working distance than those produced with the single needle lab setting. The fiber mats produced were either polymer or ceramic (such as molybdenum trioxide nanofibers). Through experimentation the optimum process …
Affine Stratifications And Equivariant Vector Bundles On The Moduli Of Principally Polarized Abelian Varieties, Anant Atyam
Affine Stratifications And Equivariant Vector Bundles On The Moduli Of Principally Polarized Abelian Varieties, Anant Atyam
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We explicitly construct a locally closed affine stratification of the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian four folds A4 over the complex numbers and using the work of Roth and Vakil, produce an upper bound for the coherent cohomological dimension and the constructible cohomological dimension of A4. Based on the work of Oort and Van Der Geer, we make a conjecture on the cohomological dimension of the moduli stack Ag for all g. In the second part of the thesis we study the ring of equivariant vector bundles on Ag and study the chern character map from this ring …

Holomorphic Twistor Spaces And Bihermitian Geometry, Steven Michael Gindi
Holomorphic Twistor Spaces And Bihermitian Geometry, Steven Michael Gindi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Ever since the 1970's, holomorphic twistor spaces have been used to study the geometry and analysis of their base manifolds. In this dissertation, I will introduce integrable complex structures on twistor spaces fibered over complex manifolds that are equipped with certain geometrical data. The importance of these spaces will be shown to lie, for instance, in their applications to bihermitian geometry, also known as generalized Kahler geometry. (This is part of the generalized geometry program initiated by Nigel Hitchin.) By analyzing their twistor spaces, I will develop a new approach to studying bihermitian manifolds. In fact, I will demonstrate that …
Almost-Kahler Anti-Self-Dual Metrics, Inyoung Kim
Almost-Kahler Anti-Self-Dual Metrics, Inyoung Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We show the existence of strictly almost-Kahler anti-self-dual metrics on certain 4-manifolds by deforming a scalar-flat Kahler metric. On the other hand, we prove the non-existence of such metrics on certain other 4-manifolds by means of Seiberg-Witten theory. In the process, we provide a simple new proof of the fact that any almost-Kahler anti-self-dual 4-manifold must have a non-trivial Seiberg-Witten invariant. | 69 pages
Limits Of Real-Normalized Dierentials On Stable Curves, Chaya Rifka Norton
Limits Of Real-Normalized Dierentials On Stable Curves, Chaya Rifka Norton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A recent approach proposed by Grushevsky and Krichever uses real-normalized differentials, meromorphic differentials with all periods real, to study the geometry of the moduli space of curves. We describe the behavior of real-normalized differentials under degeneration of the Riemann surface, and this analysis allows us to study the limits of zeros of these differentials near the boundary of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves. Our explicit description of the behavior of real-normalized differentials near nodal curves provides a tool for understanding common zeros of such differentials which has applications for the study of plane curves. This analysis …

The Kontsevich Space Of Rational Curves On Cyclic Covers Of Projective Space, Lloyd Smith
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this thesis we consider the space of rational curves on a smooth cyclic cover of Pn. These varieties are the simplest examples of Fano varieties beyond the classical examples of complete intersections in homogeneous spaces. We show that for a general cyclic cover, the Kontsevich moduli stack of stable curves in X is irreducible and has the expected dimension. Specifically, let X be a general smooth cyclic cover of Pn of degree r branched over a divisor of degree rd, and let M(X,e) be the Kontsevich moduli stack of stable rational curves of degree e on X. We show …
