Biomechanical Analysis And Modeling Of Contact Interface As Applied In Tonometry And Bio-Inspired Skin Sensors, Jun Nishiyama Dec 2014

Biomechanical Analysis And Modeling Of Contact Interface As Applied In Tonometry And Bio-Inspired Skin Sensors, Jun Nishiyama

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The modeling of contact interface, in which two entities are brought to interact with each other, either through direct contact or non-direct contact, is crucial in the understanding of robotics and biomedical research where such interface will determine important engineering properties. The modeling and analysis of direct contact interface and non-direct interface are studied in this dissertation, as applied in tonometry (non-contact) and skin sensors (contact). The stiffness of human organs or tissues is an important factor for medical diagnoses, and the accurate measurement of contact properties are very important. For instance, cancerous tissue has higher stiffness, and stiffer eyeballs …

Identification And Model Reduction Of Mimo Systems In Triangular Input Balanced Form, Xiao Yu Dec 2014

Identification And Model Reduction Of Mimo Systems In Triangular Input Balanced Form, Xiao Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Consider a discrete-time linear time invariant (LTI) d-dimensional innova- tions model, z(t+1) = Az(t)+Bx(t), (1) y(t) = Cz(t)+x(t), (2) where y (t) is a sequence of d-dimensional measurement vectors and z (t) is a state vector of dimension n. The triangular input balanced (TIB) representation of the LTI system was introduced by A.Mullhaupt and K.Riedel [1] in 1995. In the Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) case, the TIB pair is uniquely determined by the poles of the system. However, the poles alone are not enough to fully characterize the Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) TIB pair. We parametrize MIMO transfer functions in terms of …

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen 1 (Scca1) Promotes Mammary Tumorigenesis By Inducing The Unfolded Protein Response (Upr) And Il-6 Signaling, Namratha Sheshadri Dec 2014

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen 1 (Scca1) Promotes Mammary Tumorigenesis By Inducing The Unfolded Protein Response (Upr) And Il-6 Signaling, Namratha Sheshadri

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

SCCA1 is a member of the serine/cysteine protease inhibitor (serpin) family whose intracellular targets include lysosomal cathepsins L, S and K. Its expression correlates with resistance to cell death resulting from lysosomal membrane permeabilization and cathepsin release in response to radiation and chemotherapy. Elevated SCCA1 expression has been reported in a wide array of cancers including squamous cell carcinomas of the lung, head and neck, skin, cervix, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. Our laboratory recently found that increased expression of SCCA1 also correlates with high-grade, poorly differentiated breast carcinoma and poor prognosis. However, despite SCCA1's clear relevance in human cancer, …

Microglia In The Healthy And Diseased Central Nervous System, Luisa Torres Dec 2014

Microglia In The Healthy And Diseased Central Nervous System, Luisa Torres

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in the death of neurons, disruption of neuronal connections, demyelination, and inflammation. There are three phases of SCI: Acute (from the time of impact to the first few days post-injury), secondary (hours to weeks), and chronic (months to years). Currently, little can be done to modify the acute phase. Efforts to intervene have focused on the subsequent phases to both promote healing and prevent further damage. In this study I show that the small molecule inhibitor Pifithrin-μ (PFT-μ significantly reduced lesion volume and decreased the presence of inflammatory cells (microglia and macrophages) in the lesion …

Modeling The Effect Of Sequencing Error, Ruiqi Zhang Dec 2014

Modeling The Effect Of Sequencing Error, Ruiqi Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Genotype misclassification errors are known to reduce the power to detect genetic association, but the size of the effect is not known in next generation sequencing (NGS). The non-centrality parameter (NCP) and hence power of the association test allowing for errors for a specified error model at a base pair was found. This NCP was compared to the NCP for the usual chi-square test. The asymptotic power was compared to simulated power for specific settings of the true genotype and phenotype frequencies in the case and control populations, genotype misclassification rates, and total sample size. An R script was provided …

The Role Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In Regulating Kisspeptin Neurons Within The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis, Matthew John Alan Beymer Dec 2014

The Role Of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase In Regulating Kisspeptin Neurons Within The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis, Matthew John Alan Beymer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Kisspeptin neurons are potent regulators of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, necessary for pubertal development and adult reproductive competence. Estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T), along with peripheral metabolic signals, such as leptin and insulin, regulate GnRH release indirectly, in part through the activation or inhibition of kisspeptin neurons. The changes in GnRH release and consequently in gonadotropin levels caused by these peripheral signals are strongly linked to changes in hypothalamic kisspeptin (Kiss1) gene expression. However, little is known about the intracellular signaling pathways that regulate Kiss1. The phospholipid enzyme phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) is a major downstream effector of steroid …

The Degradation Of Pigments In The Water Column And Sediments Of The Bermuda Rise, Ashley B. Cohen Dec 2014

The Degradation Of Pigments In The Water Column And Sediments Of The Bermuda Rise, Ashley B. Cohen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The export of particulate carbon from the surface ocean into deeper water and to the seabed is a critical component of the carbon cycle. The concentrations and compositions of particulate pigments collected at different depths and sinking at different settling velocities can be used as a proxy for biologically mediated processes important to the early degradation of OM. By knowing what processes the compositional and quantitative changes in the particulate pigments represent, the POM cycle of the BaRFlux area can be better understood. It is important to understand the POM cycle because deposition of OM to the seabed is the …

Characterization Of The Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge Using Electrical Resistivity And Seepage Measurements, Josephine Miryam Kalyanie Durand Dec 2014

Characterization Of The Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge Using Electrical Resistivity And Seepage Measurements, Josephine Miryam Kalyanie Durand

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) encompasses all fluids crossing the sediment/ocean interface, regardless of their origin, composition or driving forces. SGD provides a pathway for terrestrial contaminants that can significantly impact coastal ecosystems. Overexploitation of groundwater resources can decrease SGD which favors seawater intrusion at depth. Understanding SGD is therefore crucial for water quality and resource management. Quantifying SGD is challenging due to its diffuse and heterogeneous nature, in addition to significant spatio-temporal variations at multiple scales. In this thesis, an integrated approach combining electrical resistivity (ER) surveys, conductivity and temperature point measurements, seepage rates using manual and ultrasonic seepage meters, …

Internal Resistive Heating Of An Almax-Boehler Diamond Anvil Cell, Adairé Tuandé Heady Dec 2014

Internal Resistive Heating Of An Almax-Boehler Diamond Anvil Cell, Adairé Tuandé Heady

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A new internal resistively heated diamond anvil cell (DAC) for the investigation of Earth materials at simultaneous high pressure and temperature will be developed on base of the Almax-Boehler type DAC. Combining resistively heated strip heater with the large opening angle design of the Almax-Boehler DAC will be beneficial for in situ diffraction and spectroscopy experiments of the structure-property relationships in Earth materials at pressure and temperature conditions of the Earth's interior. This new design will address some of the technical shortcomings of the laser-heated DACs method, such as inhomogeneous temperature distribution and imprecise measurement of the temperature. Previous studies …

Analysis Of Episodic Tremor And Slip In Cascadia Subduction Zone Using The Displacement And Strain Method, Fang Qu Dec 2014

Analysis Of Episodic Tremor And Slip In Cascadia Subduction Zone Using The Displacement And Strain Method, Fang Qu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Recent studies have found a periodic phenomenon in some subduction zones called episodic tremor and slip (ETS). This kind of event can be detected by GPS stations and PBO stations. The ETS events can last 3-4 weeks and are generally correlated with non-volcanic tremor signals on seismometers. The Cascadia subduction zone has been divided into three ETS regions due to the variation of recurrence interval [Brudzinski and Allen, 2007], and most of the past studies that focused on the displacement field, have not analyzed the region for crustal strain patterns during the transient events. Stresses will be released during the …

Post-Seismic Strain And Stress Evolution From Continuous Gps Observations, Gina Nicole Shcherbenko Dec 2014

Post-Seismic Strain And Stress Evolution From Continuous Gps Observations, Gina Nicole Shcherbenko

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Strain evolution and stress evolution following the 4 April 2010 M7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake are modeled using an adaptation of the strain transient detection tool developed by Holt and Shcherbenko 2013. The evolution of stress is calculated from postseismic strains, which are modeled from continuous GPS horizontal displacements. Strain fields are modeled in 2 ways; the total strain field based on total observed cGPS displacements, and the residual strain field, which subtracts a reference field from the total model. The residual shows anomalous strains resulting from the postseismic relaxation of the 2010 event. Anomalous and total strains are modeled in …

Analysis Of Great Basin Gps Transients, Huiyu Yang Dec 2014

Analysis Of Great Basin Gps Transients, Huiyu Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Great Basin of the western United States is one of the research hotspots in recent years because of its mysterious and complicated geologic and geophysical characteristics. There are several hypotheses that describe the active deformation and its association with lithospheric structure and mantle processes. The EarthScope program provides a large data set of geodetic information for understanding the active deformation processes there. In this thesis, using geodetic data provided by PBO program (which is an important part of EarthScope program), I analyzed continuous GPS time series to investigate possible transient deformation behavior within the Great Basin region. I analyzed …

Trace Element (Ni, Zn, Cr) And Halogen (Br, Cl) Geochemistry During Surficial Processes On Mars, Yuyan Zhao Dec 2014

Trace Element (Ni, Zn, Cr) And Halogen (Br, Cl) Geochemistry During Surficial Processes On Mars, Yuyan Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Trace elements (Ni, Zn, and Cr) and halogens (Br and Cl) can be used as powerful tracers for evaluating Martian surficial processes, and are broadly relevant to intriguing questions such as aqueous chemistry and history, brine and mineral stability, and potential habitability of the Red Planet. Large volumes of geochemical data recently have become available for Ni, Zn, Cr, Br and Cl from Mars in the form of SNC meteorite analyses and in situ measurements by rovers, and, in the case of Cl, from orbital gamma-ray spectroscopy. In order to best interpret these geochemical data or utilize them to test …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study adds to the current discussion on the literary treatment of the mother-daughter bond as used by Spanish contemporary women writers (1945-2013). It examines a representative corpus of novels to show how Spanish cultural, social and historical idiosyncrasy has produced differing modes of representation of the mother-daughter bond. This bond responds to a historically specific, autochthonous literary tradition as presented by the narrative of women writers of different generations: the postwar, the transition to democracy, and new novelists of the transition to the XXI century. Two main topics shape the treatment of the mother/daughter bond in these works: orphanage …

Thermal Emission Spectral Characterization Of Sandstones And Mudstones, Michael Terrance Thorpe Dec 2014

Thermal Emission Spectral Characterization Of Sandstones And Mudstones, Michael Terrance Thorpe

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Thermal emission spectroscopy was used to determine the mineralogy of sandstone and mudstone rocks as part of an investigation of linear spectral mixing between sedimentary constituent phases. With widespread occurrences of sedimentary surfaces on Mars, the critical examination of sedimentary rocks spectral behavior provides a basis for interpreting the environment controlling the mineralogical history of this planet. Unmixing algorithms for thermal infrared rock spectra have previously proven to be a viable technique, with accuracies better than ~17 vol %. However, sedimentary rocks, with natural variation of composition, compaction, and grain size, have yet to be critically examined. In this work, …

Unmasking The Nation: Disputing Of National Myths In The Work Of Cristina García | Unmasking The Nation: Disputing Of National Myths In The Work Of Cristina GarcãA, Jaimee Lyn Christinat

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis examines the ways in which Dreaming in Cuban, Monkey Hunting and A Handbook to Luck, three novels by Cristina Garcia, contradict and deconstruct popular national myths. In each novel, characters move between nations at key moments in each nation's history. Tracking these individuals' movements within a larger geopolitical framework allows for a new understanding of subaltern migration patterns. In each chapter, a specific aspect of movement is studied illustrating ways in which subaltern people are motivated and/or coerced to move from one nation or another, how their story becomes coopted by the larger national myth and where their …

De PãCaros Y Mentirosos En La Novela Picaresca Del Siglo De Oro | De Pícaros Y Mentirosos En La Novela Picaresca Del Siglo De Oro, Rafael Antonio Dueñas

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines how lying is an intrinsic characteristic within the genre of the picaresque novel through an exhaustive examination of canonical texts Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmán de Alfarache and El Buscón. This dissertation first defines Saint Augustine's definition of lying in the fourth century then follows variations of the definition disseminated in the courts of the Spanish kings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The history of lying serves as a backdrop for understanding how lying is used in picaresque novels. It was in the fourth century that Saint Augustine laid down the foundation for how writers during the …

An Unholy Rebellion: Political Ideology And Insurrection In The Mayan Popul Vuh And The Andean Huarochiri Manuscript, Sharonah Fredrick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstract of the Dissertation An Unholy Rebellion: Political Ideology and Insurrection in the Mayan Popul Vuh and the Andean Huarochiri Manuscript By Sharonah Esther Fredrick Doctor of Philosophy In Hispanic Languages and Literature Stony Brook University 2014 When the great Peruvian writer Jose Maria Arguedas observed that the Huarochiri Manuscript was a sort of Popul Vuh of Peruvian antiquity, he may or may not have perceived, (he does not elaborate) that the similarity was based on an extraordinary cynicism that pervaded both of these Native American manuscripts in the context of Spanish colonial America. The cynicism was directed at the …

Millennium Accidents, Breaking Narratives In Pedro Almodã³Var And Alejandro Gonzã¡Lez Iã±Ã¡Rritu | Millennium Accidents, Breaking Narratives In Pedro Almodóvar And Alejandro González Iñárritu, Anna S Shilova

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Millennium Accidents is an attempt to show the relation between the shattered, fragmented and decentralizing nature of contemporary, globalized reality and the texts it produces. In my research I aim to reveal the changes in the building and development of a story as a narrative and cognitive phenomenon. Economic globalization and the high-tech revolution have led to a modification of our mental, emotional and social functioning, converting the whole world into a huge network. Consequently, narrative-- be it verbal or iconic--shows the same metamorphosis as it generates multiple plots, neglects temporal and spatial conventions, and moves beyond national identities. Six …

Circulation And Transport Across The Iceland Faroes Shetland Ridge, Katelin Childers Dec 2014

Circulation And Transport Across The Iceland Faroes Shetland Ridge, Katelin Childers

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The pathways and variability of warm Atlantic Water crossing over the Iceland Faroes Scotland Ridge to the Nordic Seas are an important component of the large scale Atlantic circulation. This dissertation presents the spatial and temporal characteristics of the currents crossing the ridge from both an observational and modeling perspective. Previous analyses of the volume flux across the ridge have relied on moored velocity data and standard hydrographic sections. A unique velocity dataset collected weekly by the M/F Norrona along repeated routes significantly improves the spatial resolution of observations between Iceland and Denmark. Output from a global climate model complements …

Energy Technology Allocation For Distributed Energy Resources: A Technology-Policy Framework, Sreekanth Mallikarjun Dec 2014

Energy Technology Allocation For Distributed Energy Resources: A Technology-Policy Framework, Sreekanth Mallikarjun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Distributed energy resources (DER) are emerging rapidly. New engineering technologies, materials, and designs improve the performance and extend the range of locations for DER. In contrast, constructing new or modernizing existing high voltage transmission lines for centralized generation are expensive and challenging. In addition, customer demand for reliability has increased and concerns about climate change have created a pull for swift renewable energy penetration. In this context, DER policy makers, developers, and users are interested in determining which energy technologies to use to accommodate different end-use energy demands. We present a two-stage multi-objective strategic technology-policy framework for determining the optimal …

Allan Desouza And Yong Soon Min: Arts From Multiple Borders, Kyungso Min Dec 2014

Allan Desouza And Yong Soon Min: Arts From Multiple Borders, Kyungso Min

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work seeks to examine how the experiences and memories of crossing national border lines are visually embodied in the art of two artists of Asian descent, Allan deSouza and Yong Soon Min. In both their individual and joint practices, which interpret the idea of boundaries in varied contexts, the " belonging to nowhere" idea is transformed into a powerful multisensory event. Framing deSouza and Min's works within the narrative of borders, therefore, can help one appreciate the significance of cooperation for diaspora artists, particularly in embracing their displacement and replacement experiences. The first two chapters attempt to scrutinize the …

Between Here And There: The Ambiguous Ecologies Of Charles Simonds, Scott Volz Dec 2014

Between Here And There: The Ambiguous Ecologies Of Charles Simonds, Scott Volz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

At the start of the 1970s, Charles Simonds began constructing miniature architectural ruins, what he calls dwellings, on the streets of New York City. They were fragile, temporary, and site specific. Occupying windowsills, wall crevices, and street gutters, the dwellings transformed their spaces from liminal to distinct. Over the course of the decade, Simonds built hundreds of dwellings in the Lower East Side alone, and they consequently developed a strong connection to the neighborhood. This essay addresses the dwellings as sites of makeshift ecologies. Looking at the reflexive relation between Simonds' sculptures and deteriorated living conditions in the Lower East …

Place Self: Identity At The Crossroads Of Place And Time In Catherine Opie's Los Angeles Landscape Seires, 1988-2004, Kim Woltmann

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Catherine Opie achieved success and notoriety during the 1990s for several controversial photographic series of herself and members of her LGBT community that explored themes of sexuality, gender, and identity. She also, however, built a contemporaneous body of work throughout the 1990s comprised of landscape series. These images embraced a cool stoicism and deadpan aesthetic that contrasted the intimacy and dissidence of Opie's portraits, as well as the early branding of her as a contemporary provocateur. They therefore received little scholarly attention. More recent renewed interest in Opie's landscapes is largely inspired, retrospectively, because images of place have now overtaken …

The Identification Of Guanosine-5'-Triphosphate Binding Protein 2 (Gtpbp2) As A Potential Drug Target For Diseases Involving Excessive Wnt Signaling, Jonathan Manit Wyrick Dec 2014

The Identification Of Guanosine-5'-Triphosphate Binding Protein 2 (Gtpbp2) As A Potential Drug Target For Diseases Involving Excessive Wnt Signaling, Jonathan Manit Wyrick

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Canonical Wnt signaling is involved in the regulation of many cellular behaviors dependent upon context, including the induction of cell proliferation, promotion of cell survival, repression of apoptosis, and regulation of cell differentiation. Perturbations in the Wnt signaling pathway have been shown to be present in a various amount of human diseases, such as cancers of the colon and breast, leading to aberrant cellular activity. As such, recent studies have focused on the inhibition of the Wnt signaling pathway in hopes of restoring normal cellular behaviors in diseases with excessive Wnt signaling activity. Our lab has discovered that the large …

Investigation Into The Impacts Of Foreign Ruling Elites In Traditional State Societies: The Case Of The Kassite State In Babylonia (Iraq), Helen Malko

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis focuses on the study of foreign ruling minorities in traditional state societies. It investigates how the Kassites, as a foreign ethnic group, were able to control and maintain political power over the Babylonian majority for four centuries. It examines Kassite-Babylonian cultural interaction both on state and domestic levels as reflected in the material cultural and historical records. This study uses two contrasting ethnohistorical models of foreign ruling elites of the Arabs in Spain and the Mamluks in Egypt to evaluate the mechanisms employed by the Kassites to maintain power and the nature of their interaction with the Babylonian …

Analysis Of Principal Structural Orientation Of Trabecular Bone Using Quantitative Ultrasound, Liangjun Lin Dec 2014

Analysis Of Principal Structural Orientation Of Trabecular Bone Using Quantitative Ultrasound, Liangjun Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been accepted widely as a non-invasive, economic, non-radioactive and portable modality for assessing bone heath status. This technology utilizes the basic physical mechanism of interaction between ultrasound wave and bone structure to provide mechanical and structural information of bone. Instead of only evaluating the quantity of bone like other traditional techniques such as duel energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), QUS is also capable of measuring the quality of bone such as anisotropy, microarchitecture and microfracture. This advantage of QUS is beneficial for treating the patient suffering from osteoporosis or other bone health deterioration, long term bed-rest patient …

Exploratory Steatite Source Characterization In The Long Island Sound Watershed, Mark Stephenson Tweedie Dec 2014

Exploratory Steatite Source Characterization In The Long Island Sound Watershed, Mark Stephenson Tweedie

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

For as long as humans have incorporated stone into their material culture, they have used cooperative strategies (i.e. | exchange networks) to mitigate the uneven distribution of available resources on the landscape. The procurement, transport, and selective distribution of lithic materials are thus uniquely human social institutions. One of the few ways to examine the limited evidence for this behavior in the archaeological record is through the geochemical characterization of artifacts and their potential source areas. Steatite vessels recovered on the outer coastal plain of Long Island, New York, are unique in that their acquisition required water-borne transportation from quarried …

Synthesis Of A Novel Bis-Thiol Receptor For Arsenic(Iii) Compounds, Karlee Archer Dec 2014

Synthesis Of A Novel Bis-Thiol Receptor For Arsenic(Iii) Compounds, Karlee Archer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The effects of ingesting trivalent and pentavelent arsenic compounds range from developmental problems to death. They dissolve readily in water, and more of these compounds are finding their way into groundwater due to agricultural runoff, leeching from preserved wood and mining, among other sources. Development of an easily visualized molecule that binds selectively and strongly to arsenic compounds might allow ease of both the removal and detection of these contaminants from water. The program HostDesigner was used to design a receptor containing thiol groups that would favorably bind to an arsenic(III) compound. The precursor to this receptor is a a …

Assembly, Structure And Properties Of Dna Programmable Nanoclusters, Cheng Chi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Finite size nanoclusters can be viewed as a nanoscale analogue of molecules. Just as molecules, synthesized from atoms, give access to new properties, clusters composed of nanoparticles modulate of their functional properties of nanoparticles. In contrast to synthetic chemistry which is a mature field, the creation of nanoscale clusters with well-defined architectures is a new and challenging area of research. My work explores how to assemble model systems of nanoclusters using DNA-programmable interparticle linkages. The simplest clusters of two particles, dimers, allow one to investigate fundamental effects in these systems. Such clusters serve as a versatile platform to understand DNA-mediated …
