Preservice Teachers’ “Revelations And Connections”: Fostering Deep Conversations While Reading Multicultural Literature, Annmarie Alberton Gunn, Susan V. Bennett, Cynthia B. Leung

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

We investigated strategies that a literacy teacher educator used to develop preservice teachers’ culturally responsive pedagogy. This study focused on (a) implementation of literature circles, (b) preservice teachers’ (n= 29) reading and analysis of multicultural children’s literature, (c) preservice teachers’ reader response reflective journals (RRRJ), and (d) reading comprehension strategies. We analyzed interviews with the professor and RRRJ (87 responses) as well as the course syllabus, reader response guidelines, and course evaluations to understand the lived experiences of the participants. We found preservice teachers recognize the benefits of literature circles and the utilization of RRRJ to develop an understanding of …

Issues With The Uses Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) In Education, Burhanettin Keskin Dec 2014

Issues With The Uses Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) In Education, Burhanettin Keskin

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

This paper is aimed at addressing some of the main issues with regard to use of neuroimaging (i.e., fMRI) in educational settings; such as the issue of equating structure with function; the issue of finding an accurate reference point for normal brain structure and function; issues due to brain plasticity; and issues related to the interpretation of neuroimaging findings. In addition, the implications of such concerns were addressed. It was concluded that the lack of research on the issues regarding the use of neuroimaging jeopardizes the possible use of such unique technology and any educational practice based on neuroimaging would …

Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates Dec 2014

Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

Numerous studies have examined both the income and race/ethnic achievement gaps. These gaps are particularly striking in the case of minority children, who are more likely than their non- Hispanic white counterparts to be living in poverty. This overlap in achievement gaps makes it difficult to clearly identify the most disadvantaged children. Using two designations in No Child Left Behind (NCLB), socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity, this study examines math and reading trajectories as children move through elementary school. Applying multilevel growth curves to four waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99, I examine the intersection of …

A Comparison Of Ell And Non-Ell Students’ And Guardians’ Perceptions Of Student Led Conferences, Charlotte Orso, Bryan Morgan Dec 2014

A Comparison Of Ell And Non-Ell Students’ And Guardians’ Perceptions Of Student Led Conferences, Charlotte Orso, Bryan Morgan

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

The purpose of the study was to determine if the ELL and non-ELL students’ and guardians’ perceptions of student-led conferences were similar. The sample included 97 consenting guardians and 90 students from five fifth grade classrooms. The student and guardian participants were given parallel surveys to ascertain their perceptions of student-led conferences. The survey data were analyzed with the two one-sided significance test (TOST) technique to determine statistical significance. Additionally, 90% confidence intervals were constructed and analyzed to verify the results. Six of the nine student survey questions resulted in statistically equivalent perceptions between the ELL and non-ELL participants. Four …

A Mitochondrial Haplogroup Is Associated With Decreased Longevity In A Historic New World Population, Loredana Castri, Donata Luiselli, Davide Pettener, Mauricio Melendez-Obando, Ramón Villegas-Palma, Ramiro Barrantes, Lorena Madrigal

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Interest in mitochondrial influences on extended longevity has been mounting, as demonstrated by a growing literature. Such work has demonstrated that some haplogroups are associated with increased longevity and that such associations are population-specific. Most previous work however, suffers from the methodological shortcoming that long-lived individuals are compared with “controls” who are born decades after the aged individuals were. The only true controls of the elderly are people who were born on the same time period, but who did not have extended longevity. Here we present results of a study in which we are able to test if longevity is …

Community Colleges Respond To Cyber Threats Dec 2014

Community Colleges Respond To Cyber Threats

Instructional Leadership Abstracts

Headlines describing massive data breaches at multinational corporations are commonplace these days. However, virtually all employers are vulnerable to similar attacks. Stolen employee information, customer data, or industry secrets can lead to identity theft, compromised financial information, or even cyberterrorism. While the tech industry and research universities have key roles to play in adapting to this threat, community colleges also have a pivotal role to play in “Information Assurance.” The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have established the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) program to recognize colleges that are at the forefront in education …

The Queer And The Bodily: Explorations Of Power In Women's Visionary Writing In The Book Of Margery Kempe 2014, Jayne Emerson Stacconi Dec 2014

The Queer And The Bodily: Explorations Of Power In Women's Visionary Writing In The Book Of Margery Kempe 2014, Jayne Emerson Stacconi

Master's Theses

The provocative Book of Margery Kempe is a seminal text in the history of female authorship. Claiming to be the first written autobiography, The Book serves as a literary representation of womanhood during the late fourteenth to the fifteenth centuries when Margery was writing, and also speaks to circulating medieval discourses of religion, pilgrimage, and sexuality. Participating in medieval women’s visionary writing as a genre, Margery’s visionary power is a tool by which she is able to emancipate herself from the limiting roles of wife and mother. Additionally, by working within the conventions of visionary writing, Margery is able to …

Book Review Of 'Evolutionary And Interpretive Archaeologies' Edited By Ethan E. Cochrane And Andrew Gardner, Liane Gabora, Carl P. Lipo Dec 2014

Book Review Of 'Evolutionary And Interpretive Archaeologies' Edited By Ethan E. Cochrane And Andrew Gardner, Liane Gabora, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Evolutionary and Interpretive Archaeologies, edited by Ethan E. Cochrane and
Andrew Gardner, grew out of a seminar at the Institute for Archaeology at
University College London in 2007. It consists of 15 chapters by archaeologists
who self-identify themselves as practitioners who emphasize the benefits of
evolutionary or interpretive approaches to the study of the archaeological
record. While the authors' theoretical views are dichotomous, the editors' aim
for the book as a whole is not to expound on the differences between these two
kinds of archaeology but to bring forward a richer understanding of the
discipline and to highlight areas of …

The Importance Of Maintaining Upland Forest Habitat Surrounding Salamander Breeding Ponds: Case Study Of The Eastern Tiger Salamander In New York, Usa, Valorie Titus, Dale Madison, Timothy Green Dec 2014

The Importance Of Maintaining Upland Forest Habitat Surrounding Salamander Breeding Ponds: Case Study Of The Eastern Tiger Salamander In New York, Usa, Valorie Titus, Dale Madison, Timothy Green

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Most amphibians use both wetland and upland habitats, but the extent of their movement in forested habitats is poorly known. We used radiotelemetry to observe the movements of adult and juvenile eastern tiger salamanders over a 4-year period. Females tended to move farther from the breeding ponds into upland forested habitat than males, while the distance a juvenile moved appeared to be related to body size, with the largest individuals moving as far as the adult females. Individuals chose refugia in native pitch pine-oak forested habitat and avoided open fields, roads, and developed areas. We also observed a difference in …

Pecci Code (Python Estimation For Carbon Concentration And Isotopes) For Calculating The Concentration And Stable Carbon Isotopic Composition Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (Dic) In Precipitation For Northwestern Arkansas, Katherine J. Knierim, Phillip D. Hays

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

In karst settings, hydrograph separations using isotopic tracers are commonly and effectively used to quantify the proportions of rain rapidly delivered to springs along fractures and conduits during storm events. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is an effective, non‐conservative tracer for use in hydrograph separations of karst waters because of the ubiquitous nature of carbon in the sources of waters to caves and springs and unique concentrations and isotopic compositions of carbon inputs. DIC concentration and isotopic composition (δ¹³C‐DIC) in rain are typically calculated based on atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) using equilibrium carbonate reactions and stable carbon isotope fractionation values. As …

Flexible Kinship: Caring For Aids Orphans In Rural Lesotho, Ellen Block

Sociology Faculty Publications

HIV/AIDS has devastated families in rural Lesotho, leaving many children orphaned. Families have adapted to the increase in the number of orphans and HIV-positive children in ways that provide children with the best possible care. Though local ideas about kinship and care are firmly rooted in patrilineal social organization, in practice, maternal caregivers, often grandmothers, are increasingly caring for orphaned children. Negotiations between affinal kin capitalize on flexible kinship practices in order to legitimate new patterns of care, which have shifted towards a model that often favours matrilocal practices of care in the context of idealized patrilineality.

The Rule Of Law As A Law Of Law, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson Dec 2014

The Rule Of Law As A Law Of Law, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson

Notre Dame Law Review

Justice Scalia is famous for his strong rule orientation, best articulated in his 1989 article, The Rule of Law as a Law of Rules. In this Article, we explore the extent to which that rule orientation in the context of constitutional interpretation is consistent with the Constitution’s original meaning. We conclude that it is far less consistent with the Constitution than is generally recognized. The use of standards rather than rules is prescribed not only by a few provisions in the Bill of Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment but also by key aspects of the 1788 constitutional text. The executive …

The Vonage Trilogy: A Case Study In "Patent Bullying", Ted Sichelman Dec 2014

The Vonage Trilogy: A Case Study In "Patent Bullying", Ted Sichelman

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article presents an in-depth case study of a series of infringement suits filed by “patent bullies.” Unlike the oft-discussed “patent trolls”—which typically sell no products or services and perform no R&D—patent bullies are large, established operating companies that threaten or institute costly patent infringement actions of dubious merit against smaller companies, usually in order to suppress competition or garner licensing fees. In an ideal world of high-quality patents and optimal patent licensing and litigation, infringement suits by aggressive incumbents would have a cleansing, almost Darwinian effect. Yet, defects and distortions in patent examination, licensing, and litigation—the very problems that …

NYMC Faculty Publications

Obesity is a global epidemic and a common risk factor for endothelial dysfunction and the subsequent development of diabetes mellitus and vascular diseases such as hypertension. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are cytochrome P450 (CYP)-derived metabolites of arachidonic acid that contribute to vascular protection by stimulating vasodilation and inhibiting inflammation. Heme oxygenase-1 is a stress response protein that plays an important cytoprotective role against oxidative insult in diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. We recently demonstrated interplay between EETs and heme oxygenase-1 in the attenuation of adipogenesis. We examined whether adipocyte dysfunction in mice fed a high-fat diet could be prevented by endothelial-specific …

Sleep Competing Activities And Sleep Problems In Minority College Students, Timothy Billings, Linda Berg-Cross Dec 2014

Sleep Competing Activities And Sleep Problems In Minority College Students, Timothy Billings, Linda Berg-Cross

Department of Psychology Faculty Publications

This study addressed health disparities in sleep duration, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness among African-American college students. To investigate evening behaviors promoting insufficient and inadequate sleep, we assessed electronic (e.g., computer and music) and nonelectronic (e.g., socializing) sleep competing activities (SCA). Students (N = 154) were recruited from a Historically Black College (HBCU). The results showed more dysfunction than has previously been reported in college populations, with HBCU students reporting very short sleep durations, high levels of daytime sleepiness, and poor sleep quality. These students engaged in many activities during the evening, and these activities predicted unhealthy sleep. Whereas electronic …

Eco-Friendly Or Eco-Frenzy? A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Companies’ Environmental Decisions, Sandria S. Stephenson, Natalie Rodriquez Dec 2014

Eco-Friendly Or Eco-Frenzy? A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Companies’ Environmental Decisions, Sandria S. Stephenson, Natalie Rodriquez

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and analyze the incremental costs of businesses becoming “green.” It answers the overarching question: are businesses becoming eco-friendly or eco-frenzy? For the purposes of this paper, eco-friendly is defined as companies that strive to be environmentally conscious. Conversely, companies that are eco-frenzy become environmentally conscious for the wrong reasons, such as gaining an environmental reputation. With the increase in popularity of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the legal requirements related to environmental laws, more businesses have been incorporating the ideas of sustainability into their strategic positioning. At the start of the 21st …
