Burley and dark tobacco growers in the U.S. make hundreds of decisions every growing season that impact the yield and quality of the crops that they produce. These decisions may include choosing appropriate varieties, planning effective pest control measures or perhaps deciding the best time to top or harvest a crop. Increasingly, tobacco growers are being required by the industry to record and justify their management decisions and actions. The most comprehensive example of this is the U.S. Tobacco Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) program that was initiated during the 2013 growing season and expanded in 2014. Under …

The Library: Big Data's Boomtown, Rachel Jane Wittmann, Lauren Reinhalter

Publications

Since 2012, nearly every sector has developed a fascination with the seemingly new discovery of Big Data and its unprecedented capabilities to fuel analytic breakthroughs. It is clear that the use of Big Data as an information resource will continue to become more prevalent as it is employed in academic research and data-driven decision making, and even emerges as a vehicle for government transparency. This article reviews the emergence and potentials of Big Data, describes the policies fueling the current data surge, and discusses the impact on libraries. As libraries evolve to provide more data services, there is an opportunity …

A Price-Volume Model For A Single-Period Stock Market, Yun Chen-Shue Dec 2014

A Price-Volume Model For A Single-Period Stock Market, Yun Chen-Shue

HIM 1990-2015

The intention of this thesis is to provide a primitive mathematical model for a financial market in which tradings affect the asset prices. Currently, the idea of a price-volume relationship is typically used in the form of empirical models for specific cases. Among the theoretical models that have been used in stock markets, few included the volume parameter. The thesis provides a general theoretical model with the volume parameter for the intention of a broader use. The core of the model is the correlation between trading volume and stock price, indicating that volume should be a function of the stock …

Secondary Mental Health Conditions Reported By Rural Adults With Mobility And Sensory Impairments, Craig Ravesloot Ph. D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

People with disabilities who live in rural areas experience higher rates of disability than their urban counterparts. At the same time, they have less access to services and supports to address both medical and disability related needs. Based on their circumstances, they may be at greater risk for mental health conditions; however, little is known about their mental health status. The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to examine the incidence of mental health symptoms reported by a population-based sample of adults with disabilities, 2) to develop a brief screening instrument to identify adults with disabilities who are experiencing …

Reniform Nematode (Rotylenchulus Reniformis) Manipulation Of Host Root Gene Expression During Syncytium Formation In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum), Wei Li Dec 2014

Reniform Nematode (Rotylenchulus Reniformis) Manipulation Of Host Root Gene Expression During Syncytium Formation In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum), Wei Li

All Theses

Background: The semi-endoparasitic reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a major yield-limiting pest of multiple crops in the tropics and sub-tropics, including upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Reniform-resistant cotton varieties are urgently needed, but genes that confer resistance to reniform nematode have not been identified in any species. Parasitism by reniform nematode involves significant developmental changes in plant roots, leading to the formation of multicellular feeding structures called syncytia. Here, we present de novo transcriptomes assembled from syncytial and non-syncytial cotton roots on three sampling dates across a 12-day time course. Results: Total mRNA samples extracted from reniform-infected …

College Students’ Perceptions Of Barriers To Seeking Health Care, Harika Medavarapu Dec 2014

College Students’ Perceptions Of Barriers To Seeking Health Care, Harika Medavarapu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Access to health care is important to obtain health equity and improve quality of life (Healthy People, 2012). Various factors such as religion, education, family income, geographic location, and travel constraints act as barriers to access health care (Celeya et al., 2010). On the other hand, the health behaviors of medical students vary from general population of same age (Clair, Wilson, & Clore, 2004). Consequently, the perceived barriers may also vary based on the majors of students. Therefore, the main purpose of this research was to identify the difference in perceived barriers between students with health-based majors and non-health based …

Solution Of The Sir Models Of Epidemics Using Msgdtm, Asad A. Freihat, Ali H. Handam Dec 2014

Solution Of The Sir Models Of Epidemics Using Msgdtm, Asad A. Freihat, Ali H. Handam

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Stochastic compartmental (e.g., SIR) models have proven useful for studying the epidemics of childhood diseases while taking into account the variability of the epidemic dynamics. Here, we use the multi-step generalized differential transform method (MSGDTM) to approximate the numerical solution of the SIR model and numerical simulations are presented graphically.

Effects Of Radiation Absorption And Thermo-Diffusion On Mhd Heat And Mass Transfer Flow Of A Micro-Polar Fluid In The Presence Of Heat Source, J. I. Oahimire, B. I. Olajuwon Dec 2014

Effects Of Radiation Absorption And Thermo-Diffusion On Mhd Heat And Mass Transfer Flow Of A Micro-Polar Fluid In The Presence Of Heat Source, J. I. Oahimire, B. I. Olajuwon

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An analysis of the heat and mass transfer effects on an unsteady flow of a micro-polar fluid over an infinite moving permeable plate in a saturated porous medium in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, radiation absorption and thermo-diffusion were studied. The governing system of partial differential equations was transformed to dimensionless equations using suitable dimensionless variables. The dimensionless equations were then solved analytically using perturbation technique to obtain the expressions for the velocity, micro-rotation, temperature and concentration. With the help of graphs, the effects of the various important parameters such as the translational velocity, micro-rotational velocity, temperature and …

Supplemental Educational Services (Ses): Effects Of Ses Tutoring On Student Achievement, Jennifer Misewicz, Douglas E. Carothers

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

This study examined the effectiveness of Supplemental Educational Services (SES) tutoring in increasing the reading and mathematics achievement of Title I students in a Florida elementary school. Kindergarten through fifth grade students who had been matched on their previous performance on the Florida Assessment in Reading (FAIR) or the District Baseline Math test were grouped based on voluntary participation or non-participation in SES tutoring. Scores on the same tests were then compared after the conclusion of SES tutoring. Results showed no gains in improvement for students who received SES tutoring relative to students who did not participate in SES tutoring. …
