The Perceptions Of Marijuana From College Athletes, Michael A. Magnarelli Dec 2014

The Perceptions Of Marijuana From College Athletes, Michael A. Magnarelli

Sport Management Undergraduate

The study that was conducted examined the perceptions and the relationship college athletes have towards marijuana. As time progresses and more people become used to the idea of marijuana being fully legalized in the United States, institutions like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will have to deal with the fact that a vast majority of their college athletes use marijuana regardless of it being on the banned substance list. A survey that featured 14 questions was sent out to over 200 male and female student athletes at St. John Fisher College which 60 of the 200 agreed to partake …

Biological Vestiges In American Psycho, Russell K. Allen Dec 2014

Biological Vestiges In American Psycho, Russell K. Allen

English 502: Research Methods

In proposing that the use of violence as allegory in Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho is warranted, this essay challenges a popular reading of the text, one found in many critical articles, that proposes otherwise. Specifically, this essay will break the novel’s cast into three factions, with each faction having a biologically definable origin: representations of the past, representations of the present, and representation of an ambiguous territory in between. Jean serves to depict a time when people communicated on a level beyond that which is comprehensible to most Generation Xrs. She has been transplanted into the novel’s present from …

Was Jonathan Harker Wearing A Red Hood?, A. Nicole Ferrell Dec 2014

Was Jonathan Harker Wearing A Red Hood?, A. Nicole Ferrell

English 502: Research Methods

An icon of Gothic literature and forerunner of vampire lore, Dracula is credited as being inspired by Stoker’s nightmare after eating a particularly rich crab dinner. It’s also evident that he was influenced by other British invasion tales, LeFanu’s tale “Carmilla,” and The Woman in White. However, no work is evident as of yet about the possibility of Dracula being influenced by fairy tales, specifically “Little Red Riding Hood” in structure, themes, and characters.

This essay will be considering Dracula’s background, why Stoker wrote it and its Victorian influences. Then I will examine Bettelheim’s fairy tale structure as …

The Price Of Growing Beyond Innocence: Examining The Literary Lineage Of Mark Haddon’S The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, James A. Clark Dec 2014

The Price Of Growing Beyond Innocence: Examining The Literary Lineage Of Mark Haddon’S The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, James A. Clark

English 502: Research Methods

Through a thorough examination of textual clues in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, particularly those moments in the narrative in which Christopher Boone begins to develop an understanding of his own emotional and developmental limitations, as well as the results of that burgeoning understanding, this essay seeks to establish Haddon’s novel as a subtle homage to—if not the direct progeny of—Daniel Keyes’ Flowers for Algernon, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and other noteworthy works of literature in which a fictional protagonist, originally limited mentally or intellectually, suffers emotional anguish brought on by self-awareness resulting from either internal action …

An Empirical Estimation Of Statistical Inferences For System Dynamics Model Parameters, Mohammed Mesabbah, Wael Rashwan, Amr Arisha Dec 2014

An Empirical Estimation Of Statistical Inferences For System Dynamics Model Parameters, Mohammed Mesabbah, Wael Rashwan, Amr Arisha

Conference papers

For system dynamics simulation (SD) models, an estimation of statistical distributions for uncertain parameters is crucial. These distributions could be used for testing models sensitivity, quality of policies, and/or estimating confidence intervals for these parameters. Assumptions related to normality, independence and constant variation are often misapplied in dynamic simulation. Bootstrapping holds a considerable theoretical advantage when used with non-Gaussian data for estimating empirical distributions for unknown parameters. Although it is a widely acceptable approach, it has had only limited use in system dynamics applications. This paper introduces an application of Direct Residual Bootstrapping (DRBS) for statistical inference in system dynamic …

Validity And Stability Of The Decisional Balance For Sun Protection Inventory, Hui-Qing Yin, Joseph S. Rossi, Colleen A. Redding, Andrea L. Paiva, Steve F. Babbin, Wayne F. Velicer

Cancer Prevention Research Center Faculty Publications

The 8-item Decisional Balance for sun protection inventory (SunDB) assesses the relative importance of the perceived advantages (Pros) and disadvantages (Cons) of sun protective behaviors. This study examined the psychometric properties of the SunDB measure, including invariance of the measurement model, in a population-based sample of N = 1336 adults. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the theoretically based 2-factor (Pros, Cons) model, with high internal consistencies for each subscale (α ≥.70). Multiple-sample CFA established that this factor pattern was invariant across multiple population subgroups, including gender, racial identity, age, education level, and stage of change subgroups. Multivariate analysis by stage …

Soil Respiration Patterns And Controls In Limestone Cedar Glades, Jennifer Cartwright, Dafeng Hui Dec 2014

Soil Respiration Patterns And Controls In Limestone Cedar Glades, Jennifer Cartwright, Dafeng Hui

Biology Faculty Research

Aims

Drivers of soil respiration (R s ) in rock outcrop ecosystems remain poorly understood. We investigated these drivers in limestone cedar glades, known for their concentrations of endemic plant species and for seasonal hydrologic extremes (xeric and saturated conditions), and compared our findings to those in temperate grasslands and semi-arid ecosystems.

Methods

We measured R s , soil temperature (T s ), volumetric soil water content (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), soil depth, and vegetation cover monthly over 16 mo and analyzed effects of these variables on R s .

Results

Seasonally, R s primarily tracked T …

Determinants Of The Irish Bail System Before And After 1997., Adrian Berski Dec 2014

Determinants Of The Irish Bail System Before And After 1997., Adrian Berski

Reports

Bail can be defined as:

The setting at liberty of an accused person upon others becoming sureties for the accused at his trail. The decision to admit a person to bail is judicial matter and, consequently, the court cannot delegate the exercise of this judicial power to an administrative official[1].

According to the above definition it should be emphasized that an accused person has to ensure the State that he/she will return to the court proceedings or Garda Síochána Station at the particular time. It is imperative that bail is established on the fact that a criminal is …

Perspectives On Languages For Specifying Simulation Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Johannes Schützel, Danhua Peng, Adelinde Urhmacher Dec 2014

Perspectives On Languages For Specifying Simulation Experiments, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Johannes Schützel, Danhua Peng, Adelinde Urhmacher

Faculty Journal Articles

While domain specific languages are well established for describing the system of interest in modeling and simulation, the last years have seen increasingly domain specific languages also exploited for specifying experiments. This development, whose application areas range from computational biology to network simulation, is motivated by the desire to facilitate the reproducibility of simulation results. Thereby, the experimentation process is treated as a first class object of simulation studies. As the experimentation process contains different tasks such as configuration, observation, analysis, and evaluation, domain-specific languages can be exploited to specify experiments as well as individual sub-tasks or even the goal …

Applied Energy Systems - Rudimentary Fluid Mechanics, Jim Mcgovern Dec 2014

Applied Energy Systems - Rudimentary Fluid Mechanics, Jim Mcgovern

Book/Book Chapters

This is a compact textbook for a module addressing rudimentary fluid mechanics within the context of applied energy systems. It is at an introductory level for engineers or technologists. The book does not attempt to cover the principles of fluid mechanics comprehensively. Rather, it provides a practical but theoretically sound foundation, linked to two key areas: hydrostatic power transmission systems and the flow of fluids through pipes and fittings. This selection allows the two areas to be presented in some detail. Through this approach learners can put the principles of fluid mechanics into context, while developing their knowledge and understanding. …

Motivated To Adapt: Applying Goal-Setting Theory, Primed Subconscious Goal, And Implementation Intention, Graham Benjamin Wohler Dec 2014

Motivated To Adapt: Applying Goal-Setting Theory, Primed Subconscious Goal, And Implementation Intention, Graham Benjamin Wohler

Dissertations

This study investigated the effects that several motivational interventions have on transition and reacquisition adaptability. Goal-setting, whether assigned or self-set, had no effect on either form of adaptability; however, the two goal-setting conditions differed from each other once goal commitment was taken into consideration. High commitment was negatively associated to transition adaptability for assigned goals, but positively related for self-set goals; this trend was marginally significant in reacquisition adaptability as well. Primed subconscious goals were found to have no effect on either form of adaptability. An implementation intention was found to negatively relate to transition adaptability and to have no …

The hydraulic external pre-isolator (HEPI) is the first six degrees of freedom active seismic isolation system implemented at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). Implementation was first completed at the LIGO Livingston Observatory (LLO) prior to LIGO's fifth science run7, successfully cutting down the disturbance seen by LLO's suspended optics in the two most prominent seismic disturbance bands, the microseism (0.1-0.3 Hz) and the anthropogenic (1-3 Hz) bands, by a factor of a few to tens. The improvement in seismic isolation contributed directly to LLO's much improved duty cycle of 66.7% and LIGO's triple coincident duty cycle of 53%. …

Data Visualization For Network Simulations, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Greg L. Shrock, Christopher S. Main Dec 2014

Data Visualization For Network Simulations, Luiz Felipe Perrone, Greg L. Shrock, Christopher S. Main

Faculty Journal Articles

As many other kinds of simulation experiments, simulations of computer networks tend to generate high volumes of output data. While the collection and the statistical processing of these data are challenges in and of themselves, creating meaningful visualizations from them is as much an art as it is a science. A sophisticated body of knowledge in information design and data visualization has been developed and continues to evolve. However, many of the visualizations created by the network simulation community tend to be less than optimal at creating compelling, informative narratives from experimental output data. The primary contribution of this paper …
