Analysis Of The Correlation Between Media Consumption Behavior And Cultural Adaptation Of International Students In The United States, Solange M. Mercedes Checo Dec 2014

Analysis Of The Correlation Between Media Consumption Behavior And Cultural Adaptation Of International Students In The United States, Solange M. Mercedes Checo

Theses

International students are a continuously growing population in the United States (Institute of International Education, 2013). Upon arriving in a new country, cultural differences often influence students' preferred media. This paper explores the association between cultural adaptation and media selection among international students in the United States. Uses and gratifications theory is used as a theoretical foundation. A survey was administered to collect data about motives for consuming news, entertainment and sports media content, and level of cultural adaptation among students from different cultural backgrounds. The results suggest the correlation is more relevant for sports, showing that when international students …

Microstructural Deformation And Failure Of An Al-Mg Alloy With A Bimodal Grain Size Distribution, Andrew C. Magee Dec 2014

Microstructural Deformation And Failure Of An Al-Mg Alloy With A Bimodal Grain Size Distribution, Andrew C. Magee

Doctoral Dissertations

Grain size reduction has been known as a strengthening mechanism in most metals. The improvements in strength are at the cost of ductility in Al 5083, so a microstructure with a bimodal grain size distribution consisting of coarse grained (CG) and ultrafine grained (UFG) phases was developed. This creates a complex, inhomogeneous microstructure that can be difficut to predict and analyze. In this work this material is studied through a combination of experimetnal work and finite element simulations.

A full-factorial experimental design is developed for tensile tests under a variety of experiemental condtions using a custom devloped small scale specimen …

Social Comparison In An Academic Scenario: Self-Esteem In Competitive And Non-Competitive People, Ashley Walter Dec 2014

Social Comparison In An Academic Scenario: Self-Esteem In Competitive And Non-Competitive People, Ashley Walter

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

Previous research has provided evidence that self-esteem decreases during an upward social comparison. The current study explored the possibility of a personality dimension on this phenomenon. The objective of the experiment was to test if there was an interaction between the scenario of social comparison and competitiveness, and how these factors influenced levels of self-esteem. 58 participants played a game in which they could choose if they wanted to compete or cooperate, and then they took a self-esteem survey to measure their reaction to the success, mediocrity, or failure of a classmate. We predicted that a competitive person would become …

Changing The Face Of The Earth: The Morrison-Knudsen Corporation As Partner To The U.S. Federal Government, Christopher S. Blanchard Dec 2014

Changing The Face Of The Earth: The Morrison-Knudsen Corporation As Partner To The U.S. Federal Government, Christopher S. Blanchard

Dissertations and Theses

Beginning with reclamation projects in the western U.S., the heavy construction industry helped the federal government grow in size and sophistication in the twentieth century. The Morrison-Knudsen Corporation throughout the twentieth century represented one of the federal government's favored contractors. Following western reclamation projects, the U.S. federal government then used contractors to help move the U.S. economy out of the Depression, prepare for World War II, wage the Cold War at home and abroad, and win the space race. Thus, at key stages in United States history we observe the necessity of the U.S. federal government partnering with the heavy …

Potential Competitive Effects Of Vertical Mergers: A How-To Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley Dec 2014

Potential Competitive Effects Of Vertical Mergers: A How-To Guide For Practitioners, Steven C. Salop, Daniel P. Culley

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The purpose of this short article is to aid practitioners in analyzing the competitive effects of vertical and complementary product mergers. It is also intended to assist the agencies if and when they undertake revision of the 1984 U.S. Vertical Merger Guidelines. Those Guidelines are out of date and do not reflect current enforcement or economic thinking about the potential competitive effects of vertical mergers. Nor do they provide the tools needed to carry out a modern competitive effects analysis. This article is intended to partially fill the gap by summarizing the various potential competitive harms and benefits that can …

Caught In The Middle: Chat(Ting) About Black School Leaders, Demetricia L. Hodges Dec 2014

Caught In The Middle: Chat(Ting) About Black School Leaders, Demetricia L. Hodges

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this article is to “chat” about my experience using Eurocentric theories in racial and culturally centered qualitative inquiry. The challenge I face is that I believe researchers can use Eurocentric theories to conceptualize ‘appropriate’ frameworks to conduct rigorous culturally responsible and sensitive research that contributes to existing scholarly dialogue and empirical literature on culturally sensitive designs in the field of qualitative research. In this paper I use my research experience to address the question, “How can researcher(s) conduct culturally responsible and sensitive research?” I use autoethnography and writing as a method of inquiry to (re)present the multi-layers …

"Go For Broke And Speak Your Mind!" Building A Community Of Practice With Bilingual Pre-Service Teachers, Hyesun Cho Dec 2014

"Go For Broke And Speak Your Mind!" Building A Community Of Practice With Bilingual Pre-Service Teachers, Hyesun Cho

The Qualitative Report

Despite the popularity of communities of practice (CoP) in education, there is a paucity of research on teacher preparation programs that are deliberately created to build and sustain CoP to help bilingual pre-service teachers’ learning. This qualitative study describes how a community of practice was purposefully developed in a teacher preparation program for bilingual undergraduates in Hawaii. Using multiple forms of qualitative data, such as classroom transcripts, interviews, online discussion posts, and reflection journals, I illustrate how a cohort of pre-service teachers and their instructor created a facilitative and reflective classroom community of practice. Using narrative inquiry and thematic analysis, …

Disabilities Disabilities: A "Two-Way Mirror", Kathy A. Thomas

The Qualitative Report

There is nothing more intriguing than well-reported documented stories of real life experiences and genuine autoethnographic dialogue. When writers communicate and relate stories about the self and their experiences and include others who share a personal story, there is an amazing connection, unique intensive and extensive understanding and interpretation, and a cultural and social exchange in an authoethnographic representation of self and the respective culture of study. A dialogue generated among the authors as educators as they shared stories inside and outside the disabilities culture was the performance and autoethnographic delivery in Phil Smith’s book, Both Sides of the Table: …

The Relationship Between Stock Returns And Investor Sentiment: Evidence From Social Media, Zachery Mcgurk, Adam D. Nowak Dec 2014

The Relationship Between Stock Returns And Investor Sentiment: Evidence From Social Media, Zachery Mcgurk, Adam D. Nowak

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

The recent behavioral finance literature has found investor sentiment having some predictive ability in equity returns. This differs from the standard finance theory provides no role for investor sentiment. We examine the relationship between investor sentiment and stock returns by employing textual analysis on social media posts. Overall we find that our investor sentiment measure has a positive and significant effect on stock returns. These finds are consistent across a number of different models and specifications, thus finding further evidence against the standard finance theory.

Chemical And Petrographic Survey Of Large, Igneous-Textured Inclusions In Ordinary Chondrites, Katherine Armstrong Dec 2014

Chemical And Petrographic Survey Of Large, Igneous-Textured Inclusions In Ordinary Chondrites, Katherine Armstrong

Dissertations and Theses

Our inventory of material from the early solar system includes large, igneous-textured inclusions in O chondrites, whose origin and relationship to their host meteorite is unclear. These inclusions occur in approximately 4% of O chondrites, and are mineralogically, petrographically, and chemically diverse. Petrographic and chemical data from 29 inclusions from 23 host meteorites were collected with optical light and scanning electron microscopy, allowing for the determination of major phase modal abundance and major element bulk chemistry. No correlation between any inclusion property and host meteorite type were found, but some trends were observed. Nine of the inclusions show strong evidence, …

Synthetic Retinoid Interventions And Outcomes In People With Cancer Or Potentially Malignant Disorders Of The Upper Aerodigestive Tract: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Al Norman, R Perry, Ar Ness, Ss Prime, H Cole-Hawkins, S Thomas

School of Psychology

Background & Aims: Retinoids may have a role in the chemoprevention of potentially malignant disorders of the upper aerodigestive tract. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of randomised controlled trials to examine the effect of synthetic retinoid interventions in people with cancer or potentially malignant disorders of the upper digestive tract. Methods: We searched five electronic databases and reference lists to locate all eligible trials and analysed trial quality. Outcome measures were all-cause and cancer mortality, disease-free survival, second primary cancer, cancer and potentially malignant disorder recurrence and progression to cancer. Results of individual trials were combined by use of …

The much anticipated day of revelation has arrived. No, not the second coming of Bear Bryant, but rather the announcement from the Committee of Justice that yesterday revealed the top four teams in college football. In case you were being held in solitary confinement and missed it, let me reveal to you, in order of quality, the four chosen ones: Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State, sorry, The Ohio State University.
