Strontium, Lead, And Oxygen Isotopic Signatures Of Mid-Miocene Silicic Volcanism In Eastern Oregon, Emily Nancy Hess Dec 2014

Strontium, Lead, And Oxygen Isotopic Signatures Of Mid-Miocene Silicic Volcanism In Eastern Oregon, Emily Nancy Hess

Dissertations and Theses

Widespread, mid-Miocene rhyolite volcanism of eastern Oregon that are coeval or slightly postdate flood basalts of the Columbia River Basalt Province allows for mapping crustal domains using radiogenic and stable isotopes. Rhyolites are thought to be derived in large part by partial melting of the crust and thus yield direct information on the composition of the crust. Silicic volcanism is expressed in the form of numerous domes and tuffs exposed over a wide area (~300 km in N-S dimension and ~200 km in E-W dimension) west of the presumed craton boundary, which runs parallel but mostly east of the Oregon-Idaho …

An Exploratory Study Of Teachers' Uses Of Data To Understand Students' Cognitive And Affective Engagement, Nicole Van Gasse Dec 2014

An Exploratory Study Of Teachers' Uses Of Data To Understand Students' Cognitive And Affective Engagement, Nicole Van Gasse

Dissertations and Theses

Since its introduction in the 1980's, student engagement has been a popular topic in educational research. In the beginning, engagement was thought of as a simple construct; however, it is now believed that student engagement involves four separate, but equally important components (Appleton, 2012; Christenson, Reschly, Appleton, Berman, Spanjers, & Varro, 2008). The components of academic, behavioral, affective and cognitive engagement are each vital to the ongoing educational success of students, and ideally, these would remain high throughout all of the years that students are in school. Unfortunately, research shows that most students' engagement levels continuously decrease from elementary school …

From The Whiteboard To The Web: Equipping Administrators To Recruit, Hire, And Induct Top Quality K-12 Online Teachers, Daniel Keith Huld

Dissertations and Theses

Online learning is taking our nation by storm and changing the face of education forever. By 2014 we are projected to have 10 million students taking at least one online class (Nagel, 2009). The online revolution is one of the greatest changes the field of education has seen in the last 25 years (Greenway & Vanourek, 2006). This major shift in education also represents a major shift in how our teachers are prepared and what great teaching looks like in online settings.

The online classroom is distinctly different than the brick-and-mortar classroom, and success in the classroom does not necessarily …

Assessing Risk Factors And Levels Of Functioning Across The Continuum Of Psychosis, James Castorina Dec 2014

Assessing Risk Factors And Levels Of Functioning Across The Continuum Of Psychosis, James Castorina

Theses and Dissertations

Schizophrenia and other related psychotic disorders are often associated with impairments in social and general functioning. It has been proposed that there may be underlying factors such as personality traits or cognitive abilities that contribute to one's psychosis proneness, or levels of schizotypy. In the current study, we expect to see a decline in overall functioning and verbal memory according to symptom severity. Particularly, we hypothesize a similar pattern with overall functioning and verbal memory in regards to negative symptomology with comparable results between an outpatient sample and those with high levels of schizotypy. Furthermore, based on prior research, we …

Sailing As A Therapy Modality For Occupational Therapy; Requirements Prior To Participation, Carrie Bell

Honors Theses

Many outdoor activities are currently being utilized by recreational therapists to aid in the development of play and leisure skills, education, social skills training, and even therapeutic community. The process of using these outdoor activities can aid clients in emotional, physical, cognitive and social functions. Although these types of activities have been primarily utilized in recreational therapy intervention sessions, these activities carry the potential to also fit within the domain of occupational therapy. In order to engage in the recreational activity of sailing, persons must have specific cognitive, physical, emotional and social abilities. The purpose of this study is to …

Teacher Guidebook For Esl Students, Ashley Ramo Dec 2014

Teacher Guidebook For Esl Students, Ashley Ramo

Honors Theses

Language is the core of one’s identity, as it is essential in order to competently communicate and interact with other humans. Language preserves culture, and when educators are able to effectively teach English-as-a-Second-Language to students, it conveys respect for that culture. American society is highly culturally pluralistic which brings many languages into the classroom. Students bring their own experiences with them to school, including various native languages and a vast array of levels in English; some may not know a single word in English. Educators will encounter ESL students no matter what the location in the United States may be, …

Pathways To Sustainable Development, Ishrat Husain Dr. Dec 2014

Pathways To Sustainable Development, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I would venture to broaden the scope of sustainable Development to include shared growth. After innumerable debates and discussions among the academic, practitioners and civil society Organizations, it has now been established that the concept of economic growth synonymous with increases in per capita income is too narrow and limiting. Various alternative conventional concepts such as Quality of Growth, Pattern of Growth, Growth with Redistribution, and Inclusive Growth have entered the vocabulary at several periods of time. One of the lessons we have learnt from the experience of the past few decades is that rapid economic growth has led to …

Recruitment Patterns Of The Fouling Community On Eelgrass In Long Island Sound, Diana Lancaster Dec 2014

Recruitment Patterns Of The Fouling Community On Eelgrass In Long Island Sound, Diana Lancaster

Master's Theses

The seagrass Zostera marina (eelgrass) is typically found in shallow protected areas of portions of eastern Long Island Sound (LIS). Although the species and its associated ecosystem have been well studied in many places, work in LIS has been limited. A field study was conducted to assess the fouling communities associated with eelgrass beds around Pine Island, in eastern LIS. Samples were collected from four sites between July and October, 2011. A total of 15 species of fouling organisms were found on eelgrass leaves throughout the study period. Recruitment patterns varied spatially and temporally. Differences in the composition of fouling …

Dynamical X-Ray Diffraction From Arbitrary Semiconductor Heterostructures Containing Dislocations, Paul Rago Dec 2014

Dynamical X-Ray Diffraction From Arbitrary Semiconductor Heterostructures Containing Dislocations, Paul Rago

Master's Theses

High-resolution x-ray diffraction is a valuable non-destructive tool for the structural characterization of semiconductor heterostructures, and measured diffraction profiles contain information on the depth profiles of strain, composition, and defect densities in device structures. Much of this information goes untapped because the lack of phase information prevents direct inversion of the diffraction profile. A common practice is to use dynamical simulations in conjunction with a curve-fitting procedure to extract the profiles of strain and composition in the depth of the material. Prior to this work, the dynamical simulations have been based on perfect, dislocation-free laminar crystals, and this renders the …

Review: Compassionate Care For The Living And The Dying, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This is a review of "The End of End-of Life Law" (92 N.C.L. Rev. 1693 (2014), by Lois L. Shepard. In light of medical advances and increasing health care costs, conversations about end-of-life care will continue to occur. A significant portion of the discussion will focus on ways to handle surrogate decision-making. The practical suggestions Professor Shepherd includes in her article could be a valuable part of that dialogue.

Getting Down To The Fundamentals Of Hydrogen Bonding: Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of (Hf)2 And (H2o)2 From Ab Initio Electronic Structure Computations, J. Coleman Howard, Jessica L. Gray, Amanda J. Hardwick, Linh T. Nguyen, Gregory S. Tschumper Dec 2014

Getting Down To The Fundamentals Of Hydrogen Bonding: Anharmonic Vibrational Frequencies Of (Hf)2 And (H2o)2 From Ab Initio Electronic Structure Computations, J. Coleman Howard, Jessica L. Gray, Amanda J. Hardwick, Linh T. Nguyen, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a systematic investigation into the basis set convergence of harmonic vibrational frequencies of (H2O)2 and (HF)2 computed with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and the coupled-cluster singles and doubles method with perturbative connected triples, CCSD(T), while employing correlation-consistent basis sets as large as aug-cc-pV6Z. The harmonic vibrational frequencies presented here are expected to lie within a few cm-1 of the complete basis set (CBS) limit. For these important hydrogen-bonding prototype systems, a basis set of at least quadruple-ζ quality augmented with diffuse functions is required to obtain harmonic vibrational frequencies within 10 …

An Analysis Of Storage Virtualization, Nicholas Costa Dec 2014

An Analysis Of Storage Virtualization, Nicholas Costa

Theses

Investigating technologies and writing expansive documentation on their capabilities is like hitting a moving target. Technology is evolving, growing, and expanding what it can do each and every day. This makes it very difficult when trying to snap a line and investigate competing technologies. Storage virtualization is one of those moving targets. Large corporations develop software and hardware solutions that try to one up the competition by releasing firmware and patch updates to include their latest developments. Some of their latest innovations include differing RAID levels, virtualized storage, data compression, data deduplication, file deduplication, thin provisioning, new file system types, …

A Wind Ensemble Transcription Of Part 1 (The First Movement) Of Harmonielehre By John Adams With Commentary, Richard E. Wyman Dec 2014

A Wind Ensemble Transcription Of Part 1 (The First Movement) Of Harmonielehre By John Adams With Commentary, Richard E. Wyman

Doctoral Dissertations

John Adams, perhaps the most prominent American composer of the last twenty-five years (and reported to be the most frequently performed living composer), has created important repertoire for almost every major musical medium except the Wind Ensemble or Band. Published transcriptions exist of two shorter orchestral works, Lollapalooza (1995, six minutes long), transcribed by John Spinazzola, and Short Ride in a Fast Machine (1986, four minutes long), transcribed by Lawrence Odom, and both of these have become important works in the repertoire. By presenting a transcription of the seventeen-minute long first movement of Adams’s large-scale symphonic work Harmonielehre (1984-1985), this …

Mapping The Umbrella Movement: Uncovering Grounded Theologies In Hong Kong, Justin Kh Tse Dec 2014

Mapping The Umbrella Movement: Uncovering Grounded Theologies In Hong Kong, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As this Syndicate forum on the Umbrella Movement and theology winds to a close, the physical occupations in Hong Kong seem to be nearing their end stage. With court injunctions, police clearances, statements of support from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for the Hong Kong government, the attempted voluntary surrender of Occupy Central leaders to the police, and a student hunger strike after over seventy days of street occupations, it might seem late in the game to call for the mapping of “grounded theologies,” “performative practices of placemaking informed by understandings of the transcendent,” woven into the political constitution …

Nanopulse Generators: Their Design And Application To Cancer Therapy Studies, Daniel P. Wernig Dec 2014

Nanopulse Generators: Their Design And Application To Cancer Therapy Studies, Daniel P. Wernig

Senior Honors Theses

Effective nanopulse generators have become critical in recent decades concerning the study of subcellular affects in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields. It has been observed that nanosecond duration electric pulses can target intracellular organelles, ultimately leading to cell apoptosis, suggesting the possibility of a new, minimally invasive, low risk cancer therapy methodology. The standard topology for developing a medical nanopulser is the Blumlein “transmission line” approach. This approach relies on the nearly infinitesimal, yet finite amount of time required for an electromagnetic field to propagate down a short transmission line. Prior to design, requirements and constraints must be defined …

Tightening The Reins On Single-Sex Classes In Public Schools, Joanna L. Grossman Dec 2014

Tightening The Reins On Single-Sex Classes In Public Schools, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) just issued a much-needed clarification of its prior guidance on the legality of single-sex classes within public schools. A clarification of a guidance of a law may seem like the epitome of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo, but, in this case, the clarification was needed to halt a runaway train—single-sex classes being implemented in public schools around the country in clear violation of existing law and designed in ways more likely to create gender inequality than eradicate it.

Tales That Tell All: A Political Analysis Of Folktales Of Iran, Yass Alizadeh Dec 2014

Tales That Tell All: A Political Analysis Of Folktales Of Iran, Yass Alizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

This research presents an analytical study of the rewritten folktales of Iran in 20th century, and investigates the ideological omissions and revisions of oral tales as textual productions in modern Iran. Focusing on the problematic role of folktales as tales about the unreal and the fantastic serving a political purpose, this study traces the creative exercises of Iranian storytellers who apply ideological codes and meanings to popular folk language. The works of Mirzadeh Eshqi (1893-1924), Sadegh Hedayat (1903-1951), Samad Behrangi (1939-1968) and Bijan Mofid (1935-1984) are examples of a larger collection of creative writing in Iran that through the …
