New York Climate March, Lea Dolimier Dec 2014

New York Climate March, Lea Dolimier

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

This September I went to New York City for the NY Climate Change March. A small group of us from UD drove up for the day to take part in this huge and important event. It was an unbelievable experience being able to walk along side 400 thousand other like-minded people through the streets of the city. It was impressive to see such a large number of people collected in one place, voicing their desire for change.

Moriah: A Micro-Drama, Anthony Elia

Bridwell Library Research

Moriah: A Micro-Drama in 5 parts is a work that was composed for the Religion, Spirituality and the Arts workshop at Butler University in 2014. The workshop was based on the story of Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac (the "binding of Isaac" specifically). Originally, there were to be participatory portions with the audience, percussion, and voices, but the piece was simplified for oboe and cello. Three of the movements were performed at Christian Theological Seminary by ISO oboist Roger Roe on oboe and Depauw University Cello Professor Eric Edberg.

Progress in science often begins with verbal hypotheses meant to explain why certain biological phenomena exist. An important purpose of mathematical models in evolutionary research, as in many other fields, is to act as “proof-of-concept” tests of the logic in verbal explanations, paralleling the way in which empirical data are used to test hypotheses. Because not all subfields of biology use mathematics for this purpose, misunderstandings of the function of proof-of-concept modeling are common. In the hope of facilitating communication, we discuss the role of proof-of-concept modeling in evolutionary biology.

The eikonal, partial wave (PW) Lippmann-Schwinger, and three-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger (LS3D) methods are compared for nuclear reactions that are relevant for space radiation applications. Numerical convergence of the eikonal method is readily achieved when exact formulas of the optical potential are used for light nuclei (>A≤>16), and the momentum-space representation of the optical potential is used for heavier nuclei. The PW solution method is known to be numerically unstable for systems that require a large number of partial waves, and, as a result, the LS3D method is employed. The effect of relativistic kinematics is studied with the PW and …

Implementation Of Iso 50001 Energy Management System In Sports Stadia, Aidan Byrne, Martin Barrett, Richard Kelly

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Many modern sports stadia around the world consume large amounts of energy during their dayto- day operations. With the cost of this energy constantly on the rise, the challenge of managing this uncontrolled cost has become increasingly more important for the successful and sustainable operation of these facilities. It is essential that some form of energy management system be embraced by these sports stadia.

This paper is a case study on Aviva Stadium’s recent implementation of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System. The authors identify the potential challenges and benefits of implementing the ISO 50001 Energy Management System in sports …

A New Approach To Interior Lighting Design :Early Stage Research In Ireland, James Duff, Kevin Kelly Dec 2014

A New Approach To Interior Lighting Design :Early Stage Research In Ireland, James Duff, Kevin Kelly

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Current standards for interior lighting design are discussed and an alternative design methodology proposed. Cuttle has previously suggested a new criterion be defined as perceived adequacy of illumination (PAI), and that the metric for specifying minimum illumination standards becomes mean room surface exitance (MRSE). This metric specifies the overall brightness of illumination, enabling its distribution to be planned in terms of target/ ambient illuminance ratio (TAIR). This new methodology is explained, analysed and discussed along with on-going research at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Retrofit Electrochromic Glazing In A Uk Office, Ruth Kelly Waskett, Birgit Painter, John Mardaljevic, Katherine Irvine

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Electrochromic (EC) glazing is now considered a viable alternative to fixed transmittance glazing. It has the potential to enable occupants to control daylight glare and solar heat gain without the use of blinds or external shading devices, giving users more access to daylight with all its inherent benefits. Furthermore, EC glazing can reduce energy consumption by decreasing cooling loads and electric lighting usage. Most research to date has studied the effects of EC glazing in scale models, computer simulations and full scale test rooms, and some of these studies have included human participants. However, there is a general lack of …

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of Elementary And Middle School Teachers Regarding Their Participation In Distributed Leadership And Decision Making, Virginia Meadows Mcneil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which elementary and middle school teachers perceived they were being treated as leaders at their schools and were being provided with a substantial role in making school decisions. With respect to their perceived leadership status, elementary and middle school teachers differed only in their assessment of the effectiveness of teacher leadership at their institutions, with elementary teachers offering statistically significant but only slightly more positive ratings than their middle-level counterparts (x²(1) = 6.30, p = .012, ø = -0.04). In examining the perceptions of subgroups of elementary and middle …

Water-Level Changes And Change In Water In Storage In The High Plains Aquifer, Predevelopment To 2013 And 2011-13, Virginia L. Mcguire

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The High Plains aquifer underlies 111.8 million acres (about 175,000 square miles) in parts of eight States—Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. Water-level declines began in parts of the High Plains aquifer soon after the beginning of substantial irrigation with groundwater in the aquifer area (about 1950). This report presents water-level changes in the High Plains aquifer from predevelopment (generally before 1950) to 2013 and from 2011 to 2013. The report also presents change in water in storage in the High Plains aquifer from predevelopment to 2013 and from 2011 to 2013.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm) Transmitter And Receiver Windowing For Adjacent Channel Interference (Aci) Suppression And Rejection, Ertugrul Guvenkaya, Huseyin Arslan Dec 2014

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (Ofdm) Transmitter And Receiver Windowing For Adjacent Channel Interference (Aci) Suppression And Rejection, Ertugrul Guvenkaya, Huseyin Arslan

USF Patents

An optimum time domain windowing scheme for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based waveforms in the sense of spectral concentration is proposed. Instead of evenly suppressing the sidelobes along the frequency, the sidelobe power is concentrated within a guard band while maximally suppressing the power for a desired frequency range. This is achieved by employing optimum finite duration pulses, prolate spheroidal wave functions (PSWF), to shape the OFDM transmit pulse. Also with per-subcarrier windowing scheme, the effect of inner subcarriers on sidelobes is diminished by utilizing the concentration bandwidth versus out-of-band power trade-off in PSWF and the multicarrier nature of the OFDM.

Impact Of Minimum Wages On Employment: Evidence From China, Jinlan Ni, Guangxin Wang, Xianguo Yao

Economics Faculty Publications

This article examines the impact of the minimum wage on employment in China using data from 2000 to 2005. The effect of the minimum wage on employment levels was found to be mixed. Overall, minimum wages have no significantly adverse effect on employment. In particular, the results in the eastern region of China indicate few significant negative effects, which is consistent with the minimum wage theory in the competitive market. In contrast, the central and western regions experience few significantly positive effects, which is consistent with the theory in the monopsony model. The results are robust regardless of ownership (non-state-owned …
