An Examination Of Teachers' Perception Of Evaluation And It Relationship To Teacher Leadership, School Decision-Making, And Professional Intentions, Calvin Lacy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine how teachers perceive the quality of their evaluations and the relationship of these perceptions to others involving their sense of themselves as "teachers leaders," their self-assessed level involvement in various types of school decisions, and their future intentions as pedagogical "stayers" or "leavers". The perceptions of these teachers will be compared gto individual outcomes, i.e. teacher leadership, school-decision making and professional intentions. The importance of their perceptions and the impact it can have on teachers' intentions to leave or remain in the profession are tantamount to stabilizing the profession in the 21st …

Distribution, Growth, And Impact Of The Coral-Excavating Sponge, Cliona Delitrix, On The Stony Coral Communities Offshore Southeast Florida, Ari Halperin

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Bioerosion is a major process that affects the carbonate balance on coral reefs, and excavating sponges from the genus Cliona are some of the most important bioeroders on Caribbean reefs. The orange boring sponge, Cliona delitrix, is an abundant excavating sponge offshore southeast Florida that frequently colonizes dead portions of live stony corals, killing live coral tissue as it grows. With the recent decline in coral cover attributed to combined environmental and anthropogenic stressors, the increasing abundance of excavating sponges poses yet another threat to the persistence of Caribbean coral reefs.

In the first part of this study, I …

Computing Singular Values Of Large Matrices With An Inverse-Free Preconditioned Krylov Subspace Method, Qiao Liang, Qiang Ye Dec 2014

Computing Singular Values Of Large Matrices With An Inverse-Free Preconditioned Krylov Subspace Method, Qiao Liang, Qiang Ye

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We present an efficient algorithm for computing a few extreme singular values of a large sparse m×n matrix C. Our algorithm is based on reformulating the singular value problem as an eigenvalue problem for CTC. To address the clustering of the singular values, we develop an inverse-free preconditioned Krylov subspace method to accelerate convergence. We consider preconditioning that is based on robust incomplete factorizations, and we discuss various implementation issues. Extensive numerical tests are presented to demonstrate efficiency and robustness of the new algorithm.

Mems 411 Morphing Wing Rc Glider Senior Design Project, Mark J. Kurtz Jr, Erika L. Miller, Francis K. Acquaye

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class

The problem we spent a semester working on was building a remote controlled glider which used morphing wings rather than traditional control surfaces. After interviewing our customer, we discovered a few metrics guiding the size of our project as well as the requirements of gliding and control. After brainstorming several ideas, we settled on a bat wing design keying in on the flexible wing material. The wing skin material we used ended up being made from one layer of plastic sandwiched by two layers of elastic fabric. The elastic skin was stretched over airfoil cross sections which rotated over a …

The Objective Vs. The Perceived Environment: What Matters For Active Travel, Liang Ma Dec 2014

The Objective Vs. The Perceived Environment: What Matters For Active Travel, Liang Ma

Dissertations and Theses

This study aims to explore the relationship between the objective (actual) environment and people's perceptions of the environment, and their relative effects on active travel behavior, particularly bicycling behavior. This is an important research gap in the current literature linking the built environment and active travel. Better understanding this relationship will help to explore the mechanism underlying the built environment- behavior relationship and identify potential interventions to promote active travel.

Relying on the data from Portland, OR, this study investigated the following four research questions: (1) How does the objectively measured environment correspond to the perceived environment? And what factors …

Understanding Sexual Assault Survivors' Willingness To Participate In The Judicial System, Mildred Ann Davis Dec 2014

Understanding Sexual Assault Survivors' Willingness To Participate In The Judicial System, Mildred Ann Davis

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examined the relationship between support services for adult survivors of sexual assault and judicial outcomes. Specifically, this study explored survivors' willingness to participate in the judicial process. Although "victim unwilling to participate" is the primary reason given by the police for cases not progressing to prosecution, we know little about most aspects of survivors' willingness to participate in the judicial process, especially beyond initial reporting of the assault. The steps to prosecution are dependent on one another yet a survivor's willingness to participate in these steps is a fluid process. The primary research question explored was Are there …

The Role Of Mate Preference And Personality On Reproductive Performance In An Ex-Situ Conservation Breeding Program For The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), Meghan S. Martin Dec 2014

The Role Of Mate Preference And Personality On Reproductive Performance In An Ex-Situ Conservation Breeding Program For The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca), Meghan S. Martin

Dissertations and Theses

Successful captive-breeding and re-introduction programs must have the ability to breed a surplus of genetically suitable animals for release into the wild. Unfortunately, many individuals in captive breeding programs often do not reproduce even when they are apparently healthy and presented with genetically appropriate mates. Mate choice can affect multiple parameters of reproductive sperformance, including mating success, offspring production, survival, and fecundity. We investigated the role of mate preference and personality on the reproductive performance of male and female giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) as measured by intromission success and litter production. We conducted these studies on giant pandas at the …

Examining The Symptom-Level Specificity Of Negative Problem Orientation In A Clinical Sample, Thomas A. Fergus, David P. Valentiner, Kevin D. Wu, Patrick B. Mcgrath

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Given the equivocal state of the literature as to the symptom-level specificity of the cognitive variable labeled negative problem orientation (NPO), we targeted NPO–symptom relations. A clinical sample (N = 132) of adults diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, mood disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder completed self-reports of NPO and symptom types (worry, depression, obsessive-compulsive, panic, and social anxiety). Symptom-level specificity was examined using a combination of zero-order and regression analyses that controlled for the other assessed symptoms. Results were that NPO shared small to moderate correlations with the symptoms. Regression results indicated that NPO only shared unique associations with worry, depression, …

Risk Environment In Northern Sea Route Transportation Projects, Lena Y. Petrova Dec 2014

Risk Environment In Northern Sea Route Transportation Projects, Lena Y. Petrova

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The need for defining the risk environment in the Arctic strengthens as changing ice conditions and economic opportunities drive the demand for expanding traffic volumes in Russia’s Northern Sea Route (NSR). An international commercial shipping route, the NSR is proven to cut transit time up to forty percent compared to the overflowing Suez Canal when traveling from ports in Western Europe to Southeast Asia. The NSR offers a challenging yet attractive project landscape since its opening to global logistics companies in the 1990s. A total of 27 international shipments were made and 1.35 million tons of cargo were moved in …

The Non-Lethal Effects Of Climate Change On The Territoriality Of Lottia Gigantea, Tracey Gunanto, Christina Chavez, Jessica Martinez, William G. Wright Dec 2014

The Non-Lethal Effects Of Climate Change On The Territoriality Of Lottia Gigantea, Tracey Gunanto, Christina Chavez, Jessica Martinez, William G. Wright

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The intertidal zone has been described as ground zero for global warming. Here, the owl limpet, Lottia gigantea, adapted to the cool ocean temperatures, must withstand a few hours of baking sun during day-time low tides. This hardship is predicted to increase in frequency and severity in the future as the globe warms. Our research hypothesized that heat events compromise territorial behavior of L. gigantea. All observations and experiments were performed at Inspiration Point near Newport Beach, California. We measured the natural radiant temperature of tagged limpets during day-time low tides using a field-calibrated infrared “thermogun”. We also …

Mirroring Reality: Music In Video Games, Allison Burr

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This paper explores the effectiveness of music in video games in terms of mood setting and immersion. The effectiveness of the emotion evoked is studied through both personal and scholarly research. Four video games are explored from different game genres. In "Bioshock" and "Fallout 3", the music immerses the player into the environment of the video game, whether it is an underwater dystopia or the post apocalyptic Washington DC area. "Dead Space", a survival horror game set on an abandoned mining vessel in space, pushes the boundaries in terms of musical dissonance and terror by using innovative sound design. The …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

While a majority of global climate models project drier and longer dry seasons over the Amazon under higher CO2 levels, large uncertainties surround the response of vegetation to persistent droughts in both present-day and future climates. We propose a detailed evaluation of the ability of the ISBACC (Interaction Soil-Biosphere-Atmosphere Carbon Cycle) land surface model to capture drought effects on both water and carbon budgets, comparing fluxes and stocks at two recent throughfall exclusion (TFE) experiments performed in the Amazon. We also explore the model sensitivity to different water stress functions (WSFs) and to an idealized increase in CO2 concentration and/or …
